Flash! Zoom! Ready for more interplanetary tales? Ready to visit a host of alien worlds right here in our own solar system? Welcome, to Vintage Worlds 3 , the third volume of stories in the ongoing Vintage Worlds anthology series. This installment includes another slew of new, original short stories, all of which hearken back to the old pulp magazines of yesteryears…
John Michael Greer is an author of over thirty books and the blogger behind The Archdruid Report. He served as Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America. His work addresses a range of subjects, including climate change, peak oil, the future of industrial society, and the occult. He also writes science fiction and fantasy. He lives in Rhode Island with his wife.
The stories in this collection are all written around the age-old fantasy that the planets in our solar system are likely to be teeming with life, rather than being the lifeless hunks of rock, gas, and methane that they actually are.
The stories are a mixed bag. Most of the writing is just average, and one or two are absolutely putrid. The editing is inconsistent, with odd spelling and punctuation errors throughout, and numerous places in which a good editor could have vastly improved the tone, pace, and flow of the stories. One story in particular wanders badly, with numerous tedious repetitions that should have been excised to make the story more concise and improve the flow.
However, the range of interesting ideas made it worth the read for me. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to everyone. But those who loved Barsoom and other old pre-space age fiction, in which our celestial neighbors were inhabited by strange creatures, will likely find something to enjoy.
