A Surprisingly Decent Guide to Liver Detox & Cleanse
As someone who reads a lot of health-related nonfiction because of personal interest and my job as an RN, I actually didn't hold out a lot of hope for this book. I have read many detox and cleanse books, but most fall far short of the mark, not explaining or providing enough. So, I was happily pleased by this book. These authors have actually spent a good deal of time researching and thinking about this topic. They don't jump right into the idea of a detox and cleanse. They actually spend a fair amount of time discussing what the liver does, typical diseases and problems of the liver, and liver-positive nutrition. I don't think I've ever seen a detox and cleanse book spend so much time describing the whys and wherefores before just jumping into the what. I loved all the background, and they did a good job in both being factually correct and presenting it well. I loved those little liver cartoons throughout. I think my favorite was the one with the superhero cape! Adding humor like that makes a book like this so much more enjoyable. The authors do offer some recipes—most of which sound really tasty—and a 7-day food plan as well as more general ideas of how you should eat so your diet will be liver supportive and protective. They even include some physical exercises in the back. All in all, I was delighted by this book because the authors shared so much that is helpful in an engaging and thoughtful way. If your liver needs a little love—and it usually does—pick up this book to help make that happen.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This book explains what your liver does and doesn't do. "Since the food we eat is fuel for our bodies, it is easy to see how if your liver is not functioning at its peak, you might have less energy and struggle to get through the day. If food can be seen as medicine, then your liver is your body’s chemistry professor, transforming everything we eat into the perfect balance of substances to heal, support, and improve our health." It then goes on to discuss the different disorders that affect your liver. Last, the book shows the small changes that you can make for better health.
The recipes include breakfast, which is especially important as that is the most important meal of the day. It also explains that spices are good for you. That's great for me because I love spicy Mexican. I tried a few recipes and I loved them.
