Miles is kind, caring, and sensitive; at least, that’s what I thought. However, as the days pass by, I’ve come to realize I don’t know my witch very well at all.
Mysteries are unravelling and new alliances are being formed, but Miles’s absence leaves an ache in my chest that even Damen, Titus, and Julian can’t soothe, nor explain. All this does is highlight how little I understand about my newfound world.
Although everyone says not to worry, I can’t shake this feeling of foreboding. Something is wrong, and if we don’t find him soon and get to the bottom of why he left in the first place, he’ll be lost forever. I’m determined to save him, even from himself.

So this picks up where we left off. Bianca is not pleased with Miles's disappearance though everyone treats it like it's normal. It is, but he really handled leaving wrong.
I'm still loving the interactions between these characters. The guys can be so insightful at times, but still do stupid guy things. Bianca still has a hard time getting them to really hear what she's saying, but they are trying.
I'm this book, Bianca and Miles get some much needed alone time, though it wasn't on purpose. They do clear up some misunderstandings and Miles clarifies what the guys feel about her and that they expect nothing from her.
The most enlightening thing is when they stumble across Miles's other proxy Er Bashou and Bianca's adoptive grandmother. We learn a bit more about Mu and the secret plans he put into place, but no real details about it. It does seem Kathleen was right about being unable to run from a prophecy, too.
Miles does accomplish what he set out to do, the ultimate goal, anyway. Now that he's connected with Tu, he does seem a little more pushy about Bianca really talking about her trauma with someone. She's still determined to leave it alone, but I'm agreeing with that less and less because while she is functioning really well, she definitely is not healed. Also, Julian seems afraid of Miles's newfound confidence and Ramen isn't handling it well that she's bonded with another of the quintet members.
I'm guessing Titus is next. Will they only form the quintet bond? What about the mate bond?
And really, I need to know more about the plans Mu made.
Balance is the fifth book in the Grimm Cases, and it was another enjoyable read. Although I enjoyed this one, I’ll be honest and say it’s my least favourite in the series thus far. I did not dislike it, yet it didn’t quite wow me in the way the prior books did.
In many ways, this was a book where nothing happened. At the same time, it was a book where a lot happened. It’s one of those conundrums where the story felt like it was dragging, yet the details that were given were important to the story. With a lot of progression in the behind-the-scenes information, with important character development, this is one of those stories where the true impact of the events will be felt in later books.
Without a doubt, if you’ve been following the series you need to see where things go with this one. I’m certainly eager to see what book six brings.
So So good!! The grimm Cases is one of my favourite RH series and the next book in this series was no exception. What I loved about this was you go to learn more about Bianca's past and what she had gone through as a child. I loved seeing more of Miles and Bianca seeing their relationship grow. But of course even though so many questions were answered there are so many new ones. I'm looking forward to re-reading this series until the next instalment comes out. If you haven't read this series yet you really must.
I love this series still... but... I still have so many unanswered questions. I get confused on the whole "which one is Tu, Huo, Shou again?" situation. Bianca being Mu is the only one I don't have to stop and think about. Although, it's kind of frustrating when all of the RH guys keep comparing her to him when she doesn't even know what's going on half the time herself. They keep pushing her. Asking personal questions they haven't earned the answers to and acting like they all know what's best when it's obvious none of them do. Meanwhile, when she asks them questions about themselves, 9 out of 10 times they clam up and don't answer... but they seem to love telling her about their previous flings before her. Which she's said multiple times she didn't want to know about. This book made me not like Damen anymore at all. He's kind of a douche in this one. Miles is a close second on my disappointment scale. He abandoned her and stayed gone for a while. She goes after him and then he acts like he doesn't want her there. Even though we get a glimpse of his POV and his thoughts say otherwise, actions speak louder than words. He already disappointed me with his punishment for those nurses in the witch-run asylum. Julian is alright I guess... Titus has potential, but none of their actions show anything too heartfelt. None of the people who hurt, lied, or betrayed Bianca are really ever punished, and IMO, there's a lot of them. A lot... Finn, (who I wasn't a fan of in previous books) has stepped up in my opinion in this one. At least, he didn't forget her birthday like everyone else, including her bio family. I can only hope that the next book can give me some answers instead of more questions. I feel bad for Bianca, and I really want to feel good for her some time soon.

Balance is my absolute favorite of the Grimm Cases series so far. Bianca really starts to embrace the strong woman that she really is. I applaud her for putting her foot down in regards to how the boys have been treating her lately. How the boys kept infantilizing Bianca was getting really old and kinda disturbing. The only one who showed true self awareness about his behavior towards Bianca was Miles. Honestly, I didn't feel one way or the other in regards to Miles' character. He lacked a backbone and his soft nature didn't seem genuine to me. After the trails that he and Bianca go through, I can see him in a new light. I can say for sure that Miles is my favorite right now.
I'm curious to find out what the deal is with all the bizarre situations Bianca and the boys keep getting dragged into. Seriously, what is Mu up to? Either way, hopefully the boys get over themselves, because with how things are going I don't see a serious long term relationship with Bianca lasting at all.
Let me start by saying that I love this series. It's one of my most frequent RH rereads, makes me laugh every time, and I love the quirks and little intricacies that each of the characters have.
That being said, there was one thing that holds me back from giving Balance five stars (I would really go with 4.5). It's not a failing in the writing or an error that I would pick on Oweds for, but it did give this installment a little more of a disjointed feel than the others. I did love this book and absolutely devour it, but it was just with a tiny bit less oomph than some of the others. With Miles gone and Titus being absent/not on page with the others for a large portion of the beginning, the core Xing group felt a little bit off, so that's an adjustment for both the readers and the characters to feel, I think.
In any case, I think that disjointedness did bring about some important things- one of which is that there's a lot the Xing boys don't catch on to. There's a lot that they don't understand about Bianca, and it was funny to see Bryce, Brayden, and Finn show that they often had more insight into what she was feeling or doing than Julian, Titus, or especially Damien. There are some missteps, but I think they're necessary because no matter how it comes about- whether she's uncomfortable or sort of pressed into it- we do get some more information about Bianca's past. That, to me, is one of the key pieces that slows or kind of keeps the relationship development in more of a stasis.
There's a lot going on with Bianca in Balance, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all continues to snowball and explode in the next book. She's got a lot to handle with acclimating more to the group, her family, figuring out if she's ready to forgive Finn, what to do with Xavier, and how to reconcile who she is and who everyone thinks she is. Identity crisis is the name of the game. With some of her secrets being exposed and some boundaries being breached in the most recent books, I think that we see more questioning and confessions from Bianca in Balance than we have in earlier installments.
She's as illogically logical, smart, strategic, and ridiculous as always, and I think that Oweds has done a great job in giving each of her characters consistent hallmarks of behavior and quirks while still giving them room to grow. Based on some things that happen in book five, Julian's life is going to be turned upside down, I think, in six, and I am totally here for it. As one of my favorites, I really want to see what comes out of him when the group's dynamic has to inevitably change to adjust to the new events in Balance.
Overall, this book drew me in. I learned more about the Xing history, more about Bianca's past, more about her dynamics with the boys and what needs to change about her dynamics with the boys, and I, for one, am in favor of Finn getting a redemption arc, so I liked the little moments that he got with Bianca and that he's not getting pushed to the side for us to just focus on Bianca as the Xing and her newly discovered family. As always, even though Oweds gives us some answers, we now have a million more questions, so there's a delicate balance to the reader and their curiosity that I think our author is handling quite well throughout the series.
This story was good, but problems I had with previous books continue to rear their heads in this one. Basically it’s overarching “mystery” plot is too damn vague. The entire series is being dragged out far to much and as much as I love these characters (and I do), I’m getting to a point where I’ll happily throw in the towel and be content not knowing where the hell it eventually going.
It’s such a shame because the story has been compelling from the beginning. I love the world and the characters, but there comes a time when all the vagueness with only vague answers that lead to more unanswered questions gets old. The only resolutions that happen are the bonds she creates and even those aren’t resolutions. They too only lead to more vagueness and unanswered questions. The author has been eluding to answers that just aren’t appearing in any kind of timely fashion. 3/4 of the book is fill and honestly could have been removed without the series plot being effected. Hell, even the book plot wouldn’t have been effected all that much.
Honestly, these 5 books that are out so far could have been condensed into about 2 maybe 2.5.
It will be interesting to see at what point the series will go from YA to NA. Not that there needs to be sexy times for a book to be good, that isn’t the case at all, but we’ll be into book 12 and the tension between everyone will still be so thick it could be cut with a knife at the rate things are going.
I’m giving this book a solid 3⭐️⭐️⭐️ because the writing is technically good and I enjoy the banter between the characters. There was noticeable character growth for both Bianca and Miles even though Bianca’s guys are utterly determined to keep her in the dark about damn near everything. That needs to stop. It’s annoying and demeaning to her character to have them coddle her when Mu is supposedly their heart even though this book definitively states that it’s actually Huo that’s the heart... yeah, doesn’t make sense to me either.
I'm just done. Whatever good feelings I had about this series have disappeared with this book.
I thought about ranting about Bianca's lack of growth (was tricked into thinking that she had grown with the conclusion of the last book but she's somehow more stagnant in this book than she's ever been before)
or the fact that Miles was gone for like 160 pages
or the fact that this series suddenly turned into everything I hate in bad RH, out of nowhere (*made one or more of the love interests unlikable&their actions irredeemable in my eyes forcing me to stop loving them, *created an unnecessary conflict that forced the plot to literally NOT MOVE FORWARD, *redemption arcs for dicks, *torturing the main character, the list goes on&on&on)
But this book sucked so much life out of me that I don't even have the energy to rant.
The Cherry on top of the Crap Pie was Bianca being displaced as the lead in her own story.
She is suddenly no longer her own person in this book but a reflection...a mirror of a past life that has nothing at all to do with reverse harem.
So..I'm over it&no longer interested in whatever comes after this one.
Can't believe I wasted so much time reading this series. 5 books worth that I'll never ever get back.
This is one of those series that confounds from the get go, dropping hints that makes little sense till later - yet the picture is still being painted, though slowly. Very slowly. Yet that is actually perfect. These characters, reincarnations, deserve the time to grow and introduce themselves to us in this methodical, if confusing, manner.
Still a YA, with like cursing and no intimacy, though I can see the potential for a NA down the road. I have a feeling it will be a long road though. Bianca had far too much to work through, and the author is respectful of that - and us- but not dismissing or minimizing, her past. Trauma is trauma, and everyone deals with it differently.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 🌶️ I actually just really enjoy this series. It is super slow-moving but the characters and story are compelling. Don't read this if you're there for the smut because you'll be unhappy.
If there's one Reverse Harem series that has gathered a place in my heart, it's this series. It's mostly because of Bianca though. Bianca is the kind of character that will never work in any other story and that makes her so special and unique. And ever since I read the fourth book in this series, I was really looking forward to the next book in the series. You can imagine how high I jumped and how crazy I danced when I was offered an ARC of this book!
I dived into that ARC right away and it was exactly what I had hoped it would be and what I expected it to be. Just like in the previous books we get a lot of information and a lot of mythology in this book. It was a little overwhelming in the first books, but now I've grown more comfortable with it I start noticing how brilliant it all is. Oweds really thought about everything. Everything works, everything fits, everything has a reason and plan. And even though it sometimes leads to info-dumping, it never really bothered or bored me.
The main plot revolved about Bianca and her guys going after Miles, who has disappeared at the end of the previous book. I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of roadtripping, camping, hiking and so on. However, even though the setting wasn't my thing, I really enjoyed the ride. Mostly because a lot of relationship building and character building was happening. We learn more and more about the core personalities of these characters, how they used to interact and what this means for their current lives. And it's so interesting and intriguing to watch!
Especially because Bianca manages to surprise everyone time after time. Her unique personality, a result of her past, her upbringing and how shielded she has grown up, is constantly throwing the guys off track. As a reader I have by now learned how Bianca's mind works, but it works in such a unique way that it's impossible for the guys to follow. I also like how all her assumptions and conclusions are incredibly logical and smart, and yet are not. It's endearing, it's hilarious at times and in a way it's also very sad.
I can't wait to learn more, to see more of their interactions, to watch them grow and to most of all watch them grow closer. It's a slow burn, but it will be so so so worth the wait. I don't even doubt that!
This was an amazing addition to the series. I had recently done a re-read prior to the new book, but it had still been about a week and yet I was drawn in immediately.
Bianca’s wit and humour are one of the best things about her, and that’s only highlighted in this book. Her internal monologue is hilarious and her logical way of thinking (even if it’s not realistic) is amazing. I love the way she acts in this book - and it’s great that we’re still getting little hints of their previous lives.
Miles is kind of the forefront of this book, which is needed, but this doesn’t exclude the others either. Miles has some struggles within this book, and it made me extremely happy that Bianca is there to help him. After that pinnacle moment, I’m intrigued to see how this plays out in the next book, and whether certain people (looking at you here Julian) will be affected too.
Damen was slightly annoying in this book, and I hated the way he kept pushing at Bianca - even if it was needed. When she snapped back, I was proud of her. I think he’s going to continue to struggle with the different dynamics.
Okay, was I the only impressed with her witchy knowledge?? Like I feel that’s definitely going to play into things later.
This book had a lot of moments that tied it into Rising Sun, and I loved that.
The moments with Bryce, Brayden and Finn have had me in stitches, and I’m really loving that they’re getting more “screen time”. They’re funny and their dynamics are great.
I’m watching Xavier though because I’ve got a feeling he’s up to something (okay he’s admitted it, but that doesn’t make him any less of a watch target).
Overall I absolutely adored this addition to the series and I’m so excited to see what comes next. I have so many thoughts and theories and I think that’s one of my favourite things about this series. The author has said all the little things can actually be something big and that’s the most exciting part. Deciding what you think could be important and waiting to see if it’s confirmed. I highly recommend this series, but you need to start with book one. Another amazing addition!
I’m now wondering how many books there are going to be in this series. It seems now that each book is going to focus on one of the four men in the quintet. This book and the previous has now knocked two of the four out. The next book looks like it’s going to be about our dragon, Titus (who I adore). For now though, I’ll focus my thoughts on Balance.
In the start, we are without Miles. He’s been gone for more than a week now with no return in sight. Only a vague note and his deafening absence in his wake. Bianca is distraught, if not annoyed, by his sudden disappearance. Especially after how they left things. Nevertheless, she tries to not worry herself over it but soon realizes that there is much more to her down to earth (slightly more than) friend than she realizes.
That’s when Bianca decides to go after her man. Along with her other members of the quintet and a few stragglers, Bianca is more than ready to drag Miles back whether he wants to or not. She won’t tolerate his running away anymore. With a few mishaps and mysteries along the way, Bianca and Miles finally solidify their bond for one another and all seems well. However, there are more mysteries to be solved about her present self and past, Mu.
I like the whole duality of her wanting to be her own person and being constantly compared to her past, Mu. She’s annoyed with it and can’t see the resemblance, but the more she grows into her place and self, the more alike she than she even realizes. I seriously can’t wait for her to just be the baddest bitch in town. Seriously, if I don’t get that in the next book and see her finally face her own fucking problems and insecurities… I’m gonna be pissed. SO yeah, I want to see some more progress on her development.
Her relationship with the guys is getting more physical and she’s gonna have to deal with that. She tries to push them away and keep distance, but Bianca also knows (perhaps more subconsciously) that she wants these men. Sigh, I can’t wait for the romance to FLOURISH.
Now I wait the five days to get the next book in the series, cause my boi Titus is gonna be the focal point and it’s gonna be so good.
In case I haven’t said it already, this story has me hooked. Being the fifth story in the series, the characters and their relationships are already extremely fleshed out. Except, like a fantastic writer would, Oweds continues to have her characters grow and change. Their relationships with each other as well as themselves are dynamic and keep me wanting more. Watching the characters come to terms with their own strengths and weaknesses makes me want to be a better person myself.
Because this story changes between multiple perspectives as the chapters change, as a reader you’re able to understand each character’s motivations and thought process more in depth. While not every author is great at fleshing out each character as their own personality, I personally believe that Oweds excels at this. I can put down the book in the middle of a chapter, leave it for an hour or two, come back and still easily figure out which character’s perspective I’m reading from.
The world itself also continues to grow and change before the reader’s eyes. Bianca’s past continues to be explained – both the hardships she underwent and the sprinkling of joys that she knew growing up. But even still, the reader is left with more questions than answers in regards to what really happened to Bianca before she got adopted by the Geiers. I adore this as the world continues to expand the more we find out about Bianca and her past, not shrinking into the sole focus of the story. By having more questions about what went on than answers, Oweds has promised the reader enjoyment as the story goes on.
If this wasn’t the most recent story in the series, I would have already picked up and read the next one already. As it is, I sit here waiting (not so) patiently for the next book to come out. I’m not kidding when I say I can’t wait to dive back into this amazing world.
Balance by Lyla Oweds is the fifth book in The Grimm Cases series. It's a young adult paranormal series with ghosts, hot guys and many mysteries. This book picks up where the last book left us, and we are right back to Bianca's and her boys' shenanigans.
I was so excited about this book, and I love this series. This book wasn't a disappointment, and I devoured it in one sitting.
I love the characters in this series, and I love how different they are to each other. I like the guys more and more as the series goes on and I can't wait until they are all together and in love. I love how Bianca seems to grow in the books but still is kinda the same, and I love her for it.
I would totally recommend this series, and I'm excitedly waiting for more. I can't wait what mysteries we get answers next.
To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about this series even after reading the first three books. There are some things I don't really care for (not the biggest Bianca fan, and some of the mysteries feel a bit too mysterious at times, like I am missing something but I know I'm just being teased).
And yet...
I can't stop reading. I am HOOKED. There was something about the first novella that finally got me. I need to see how this goes, I like the lore and general world building, and am starting to really adore these guys.
Now, here I am, having finished Book #5 and needing to wait MONTHS for the next book. Haha, I want it now!! So many questions need answers, and there is much bonding that needs to be done!
My favorite part of this was all the bonding done between Miles and Bianca. Their adventure, accidental as it was, really did a nice job of genuinely bonding them and building their characters up more. Miles is easily my favorite of these men. Bianca is also growing on me a lot more, especially as her story continues to unfold, and her healing continues.
I honestly think that there was more plot progression in this single book than in all but the first book combined. We finally get some clarity on Mu and the other 4 men’s relationships. I was quite happy with what it turned out to be too. (And yes, I was completely imagining the snippets of the past in manga/anime style. It’s just too avoidable.) Bianca finally seems to have some personal growth and there’s some actual communication happening between the characters. So, I was pleased over all.
I still think the series is frustrating in it’s lack of breaks or feelings of conclusion. It really is just one giant story and I find that exhausting. But I’m also interested in seeing where it goes. I just wish I didn’t feel so inclined to finish that last sentence with “eventually.”
Oh man I cannot tell you how much I love this series and this author. As always she does another amazing job drawing the reader into this amazing story.
Miles, I finally see that he gets his spotlight!! I so enjoyed getting to see more into his mind and just getting to know him better.
I so enjoyed how everyone is coming together more, that they are all growing more as a unit. So is Bianca, it just really feels like things are coming together more.
There are some twists and turns, and questions that will keep you on your toes.
What a wonderful job this author has done, and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Pretty sure it is going to be just as addicting.
I fell in love with Bianca in book one and enjoy the way she sees the world. Most of the time she has me laughing out loud. I missed that a lot in this book but I understand why it was missing. Dealing with her horrible past needs to happen for her to grow and over come it. The story was really well written with the triggering nature of her past. I had a hard time writing this review because the book was not my favorite of the series but it also needed to happen at the same time.
My favorite thing about this book is that it focused on Miles. I think he is so under appreciated and this one really changed that for not only readers but the characters as well. I love how Bianca is coming into her own and opening up more. I especially love how her and Damon have been interacting. I think he needs that in his life😂. Balance gave us a few more mysteries to add to our list and I can’t wait to learn about them! Lyla again astounds us with her storytelling and world building, so thankful to have found this series!
I absolutely love this series. I keep on getting sucked in to each book. There are so many questions and twist and turns. All the characters are amazing, even the secondary ones. This one has many references to her other book series, with Gloria, so definitely check it out if you haven’t yet. Miles is one of my favorite characters so this book was a great chance to get a better understanding of his and Bianca’s relationship. Love it.
Book 6 has been pre-ordered. Books 1-5 are re-read and read so I am all caught up. But I am like a toddler. I don’t want to wait! I want it now! I am loving these characters and the twists and turns the story is taking. I can’t wait to see what comes next and then what comes after that and after that and after THAT until the story is done. And then I will be sad it is all over.
I saw this series recommended on a Facebook group for sometime but I had been pushing off reading it. woe me, cos it's awesome. out of all the reverse harem romances I've read(and I've read a lot( this reminds me so much of mangas or Anime. In fact it kinda (kinda) reminds me of Ghost hunt (the anime) But funnier and more romantic.Anyway, I can't wait for more.
Another wonderful addition to the series. As usual, I was sucked in early and dragged along for the ride with my RL responsibilities being ignored 😉 The insight into Bianca's past opened up so much more in this book. I loved watching the interaction and the relationships building!
Such fun!! I have enjoyed these books so much as they are both fun to read but heart breaking too. Love the guys and find it funny how they interact with each other but all pull it together, mostly, for Bianca. I absolutely love Biancas inner monologue, the theories about everyone she comes up with crack me up. Can't wait to see her announce her theory on Finn and Bryce haha. Roll on next book.
There is something so refreshng with Bianca's way of thinking. And that is mostly because it is so well written, and her unique mindset is not forgotten throughout the series, showing how well made and real these characters are.
Absolutely amazing. I love the continuation. I love Biancas theories and the way she thinks and this book she just gets better . Definitely a must read
I adored this book! I was so happy to read it when it came out! Amazing story line that was continued and amazing characters! Bravo on another great book!!
