Return to Dreagan for a special Valentine's story featuring Constantine, the King of Dragon Kings, and his mate…

He’s loved her for eons, wanted her forever, and a day never passes without her at the forefront of his mind.

The only way Con could pass the time as his fellow Dragon Kings slept away the centuries was to record his thoughts in journals: one for his responsibilities as King of Dragon Kings, and another for the object of his desire. Now that she’s finally back in his life and his arms, it’s time she learns the truth. He played a part all those eons—maybe a little too well—but he never stopped loving her, and his journal will show her just how much.

But Con is the one in for a surprise as his mate turns the tables on him and leads him on a merry chase. If he can find her, he knows he’s in for something special. But then again, every day is extraordinary with his love by his side. And, thankfully, their future has never looked brighter.

ARC received from author

A very quick read where we get to see inside one of Con's red journals, and so does Rhi. Then she leads him on a little scavenger hunt to find her. No bad guys, no drama, just sweet romance.

Just wow! Heart of Gold just became my favorite book of the entire series! When it came out that Constantine, King of Dragon Kings, was Rhi’s ex lover I was not excited. I did not think that they had much chemistry and hated how Con treated Rhi throughout the series.

After reading Heart of Gold and finally getting into Con’s head through the red journal he leaves for Rhi to find and read and also through his own flashbacks I am now on board the Con/Rhi train all the way!

I alway thought Con was heartless and emotionally bankrupt but not anymore. This is a very short story but it is so worthwhile and the very end is setting up some exciting things to come.

Will he let the past rest or risk their happiness...

While I haven’t read the related novel Inferno, the previous novella and this one are perfect bonus reads for all the readers who have longed to see the king of Dragon Kings with his mate.
It is a window in the after, the time when they realize they must let the past go with all its pain to face a happier future and enjoy it fully.

And even if it very short, this story is a wonderful declaration of love, not of today’s love but of a sentiment lasting beyond time and pain, eating at one’s soul and leaving hollowness and hopelessness if not fulfilled.
5 stars for the beautiful and desperate words Con wrote.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 only kisses and love words.

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

Review originally posted at Rantings of a Reading Addict

We return to Draegan for this Valentine's story featuring our favorite couple, Con & Rhi.

Rhi finds one of the red journals that Con has spent centuries using. She can't help but read the torment Con had gone through after he gave her up for the Kings. As usual, Rhi plans something that will make all the good memories of their time together replace those hurtful ones.

Even though Con & Rhi have had their HEA, it is still nice to be brought back to check in on them. Rhi has always been a firecracker throughout the series and it is fun to see what kind of mischief she will get into at Draegan.

Heart of Gold revealed to us the secrets of the journals which was something we all had been wondering about before while making our hearts warm at the lengths this couple will go to for their love. If you are still craving more Con & Rhi, these novellas really hit the spot.

Constantine and Rhiannon have overcome incredible odds to be together once more. Rhi finds one of Con’s red journals – the ones he dedicated all his thoughts and feelings towards her. The book reveals just how much her beloved dragon hurt during their eon long separation. She cannot help but return the gesture in a sweet, scavenger hunt.

I love how Rhi helps Con follow his own advice: to let go of the past. The past cannot be changed no matter how much one dwells on it, a lesson both learned the hard way.

HEART OF GOLD is book 18.6 in Donna Grant’s paranormal romance series, DARK KING. This novella is a heartwarming continuation of Con and Rhi’s happily-ever-after. Readers finally learn what Con penned in those red-back journals mentioned in the last couple books in the series.

Heart of Gold consists of declarations of love from Con to Rhi as written in his journals and from Rhi as she finds a way to reciprocate with her own messages of love to Con. There is very little in the way of action or advancing the series but there are hints of things to come. Too short.

Con’s Journal

This was a really sweet and unique way for the author to celebrate Valentines Day. A journal written during the devastating past to be read in the present by the “reason” Con needed the journal.

This was a short tidbit into Con’s thoughts during his and Rhi’s separation. The way his emotions spilled across the page was almost gut wrenching, from his feelings of despair and guilt to his devotion and love for Rhi...beautifully done!

I received an advance reader copy from the author and this is my honest review.

I read the "Dear Readers" letter at the beginning of the book, and it made me think.

One thing that we as readers always tend to forget - whether on purpose or not - is that authors write what is in their head. It is their world, not ours, Dear Reader. We are along for the ride. And maybe there are a few that should remember that point.

My post will contain a few spoilers, so if you don't like it, don't read beyond this point.

We are given another slice of life with Rhi and Con.
In this slice, we're shown Con's despair over what he did to his love. We're shown a few of the journal entries he kept over the centuries. It gives the reader another insight into the King of Dragon Kings. I loved this viewpoint. I got to see more into the KoK than I felt I did with the "History of Constantine" books. And the little love letters Rhi left scattered all over made me smile. I really did like that part.

In the beginning, I didn't think Con was Rhi's King. Why? Well, for starters, I thought it was to obvious. I thought they hated each other because of what her King did. Well, I guess it sorta was. Another reason why I didn't think Con was her King was that the question was posed to Ms. Grant on Goodreads. She replied in the negative. Now, this was at the start of the series, loooong before even Ms. Grant knew who Rhi's King was. Was I mad to find out he was her King? No. More disappointed, as I thought she might have caved into the readers wishes (I know that's not the case). But, as I read Q&A's she's had and watched the live FB videos, I realized Ms. Grant didn't even know until later in the series.

That said: Am I wiling to forgive him? Maybe a little after reading some excerpts of the red journal. It gave us an insight into the turmoil he was in himself.

The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few, or in this case, the two. Two of our most favorite characters were ripped apart to keep a larger family together. I'm willing to let the scars heal.

Are you?

And let me just add: The Portal in the Dragonwood - HOLY DRAGONS!!! I'm so excited, I can't wait to read what happens next!! What a way to end the book!!!!!

Donna’s Grants latest novella in the Dark Kings series is the perfect prequel for every Valentine this February. The Reader is immediately given insight to the deep and passionate love Con, King of the Dragon Kings and Rhi, his mate, have for each other. Together at Dreagan, their home, recovering after the holiday gatherings Rhi has the day to herself – coming upon one of Con’s red journals, written while he and Rhi were separated – she reads Con’s deepest thoughts and feelings about her! How Con’s love for her never waned – even when he forced her to leave him so he could save his kings. Wrapped in the burning passion of Con’s love letters from the past, overwhelmed by his deep devotion and love, Rhi decides that her hard-working mate deserves something special for himself as well, something very special that she knows only she can offer him.

This novella was a welcome break in today’s reality. Dreagan and its diverse inhabitants always draw the Reader in that world from the very first page. Spending time in Con and Rhi’s castle of the Reader can feel it is a safe and comforting place to be. It is such a gift from the author to have been given more glimpses into Con and Rhi’s turbulent beginnings and past - and is always a treat for the Reader to travel and get a peek to that history which reveals so much more about their love and passion for each other; as well as other tantalizing pieces of the fast-moving stories of that time. The repartee between the two during separation is always worth the mild anxiety the Reader’s experiences at them being apart because we anticipate the outcome and realize they are only glimpses into the past. The present is always bringing new adventures and challenges that are guaranteed in the Dragon King series. Whether you have read the series or are starting with this novella, it is the perfect read to continue or to first enter the world of the Dark Kings Series.

So as far as short stories go, I’m not usually a fan, mostly because I feel like they are over too quick for any kind of development or connection for me. However, in the case of these short stories, revolving around our favorite Dreagan couple I am more than willing to accept the shorter length for the continued glimpses into their love story and developing relationship. Grant is giving us these stories, all about Rhi and Con, who have finally found their way back into each other’s arms after millennia apart, and we are getting to experience the rush and happiness right alongside them. They are dealing with a lot of heavy issues, including the knowledge that their twins were not lost so long ago, but that they have grown into beautiful adults, ones that don’t seem to want anything to do with their parents. Each of the short stories to my understanding will be another glimpse into Con’s journals over the long separation from his mate and Rhi will get to experience the love and longing that he carried stoically for so long. In this story Rhi first gets to read the infamous “red journal” that Con has been keeping so long and she sees the pain and yearning her mate lived with and hid so well. As she experiences it, she devises a way to show him, in the present, just how much she loved him all those years as well and how much more she continues to love him each day. I really enjoyed the glimpses of their love and the information we got about the overall arc as it continues. I will say that for readers that haven’t read the new spin-off series, I don’t recommend jumping into this story because you’ll get some spoilers for that book (Dragon Revealed), but otherwise this story could only have been better had it been a little bit (or you know, a LOT) longer. Another lovely idea from Grant, and I look forward to continuing Con and Rhi’s epic love story right along with them.

Heart of Gold by Donna Grant is a short novella that is focused on Rhi and Con from the Dark Kings. The novella is part of a series, and I’d recommend reading Inferno and Whisky and Wishes to get a better understanding of the importance that the Red Journal plays in helping Rhi gain a different perspective of what Con felt for millenia. Rhi and Con are my favorite couple in the series and this novella shows us some small glimpses into the past and briefly touches on why Con was let's face it, a jerk to Rhi in different books throughout the series.

The novella opens with Rhi finding the one remaining Red Journal (Con destroyed the others) and reading it after being encouraged to do so by Ulrik while she's having a "me" day encouraged by Con. Throughout the series we saw the pain the Rhi felt about her Dragon King ending their relationship with no explanation. The Red Journal gives us a glimpse of the pain Con went through while also realizing that they were both miserable because of a decision that he made for what he felt was the good of the rest of the Kings. It shows you a side of the King of Kings that we hadn’t seen yet - the vulnerable and self doubting side who realized that life without his mate was worse than he could have imagined.

This was another step on the way for Rhi and Con to heal and overcome their past, while looking to the future with the Dragon Kings, the Reapers, and others.

I can’t wait to read the next novella Of Fire and Flame in March!

The latest installment in the Dark Kings series, Heart of Gold is a sweet and sexy novella that is just perfect for Valentine's Day or any day for that matter. Rhiannon and Constantine have loved each other for thousands of years but were separated for most of that time. Longtime fans of the series waited for what seemed like an eternity for their reunion and author Donna Grant did not disappoint. Since the pair reunited in the full length novel, Inferno, Donna Grant has treated readers to two novellas featuring the pair. Both books are true standouts as they focus solely on Rhi and Con with no outside distractions or evil forces to battle. Heart of Gold finds the newly married Rhi gaining a deeper understanding of the heartache and turmoil her Dragon King endured while they were apart.

When Con leaves one of his famous red journals for Rhi to "find" in their bedchamber, she is able to read her mate's innermost feelings during the time when they were separated. It was quite the treat to see some very famous scenes from earlier novels play out from Con's point of view; giving readers and Rhi the chance to see that he was not as indifferent as he claimed to be.

Rhi and Con are one of my favorite literary pairs and I thoroughly enjoyed this poignant trip down memory lane. It was wonderful to see the newlyweds closer than ever as they prepare to face their next big challenge; the twins they have never met.

If you are in the mood for some epic romance this February, treat yourself to Heart of Gold.

Many thanks to the author for the ARC.

A poignant glimpse into a Dragon King’s heart.

I’ll begin the review by stating that I am a huge fan of Donna Grant, and over the past years have been immersed in the Dark World series she’s written. She gave her fans these “slice of life” novellas by request. Many of us have become so invested in the characters, have so many questions, and I so appreciate these glimpses that go a little deeper into our character’s lives.
If you’re not up to date on the series, this review will contain spoilers.

Con and Rhi have a long, long history together. Some of it beautiful; much of it painful. During their long separation (we’re talking eons here) the only way Con could survive was to let his tumultuous feelings out by writing them down in journals. We thought those journals were all destroyed, but apparently several remain. Rhi finds one of them and is so moved by what she reads, she’s compelled to respond.
My only complaint is that as a novella, I wanted MORE! (I’m greedy that way.) You don’t have to have read the entire series to enjoy this novella. You could start here and then (knowing the ending) read their entire history.
WARNING: Grants books are addictive and you won’t be able to stop once you start!

A peak inside the Red Journals….
For all of his eons on this Earth, Con has recorded his thoughts in journals. He has two sets - brown ones to record events involving the Kings, Reapers and other supernatural beings and red ones to record the torture of living without his mate. The red ones were never meant to be read and most of them were destroyed by Con himself in a fit of anger and despair.
In this story, we get another little glimpse into Con & Rhi’s life now that they have found their way back to each other. Rhi finds one of the red journals sticking out from under the mattress. She can’t resist reading it to get insight into what her mate went through when they were apart. Since Con never does anything by accident, I believe he left the journal where Rhi cold find it to tell her all the things he couldn’t tell her for so long.
I am really enjoying these short stories that show us how life is continuing at Dreagan, how Con & Rhi are enjoying being together. Donna Grant knows she has us readers invested in Con & Rhi and she keeps giving us these lovely little snippets of their life now. I look forward to the next part of their story and excited to see how they overcome what comes next.

I love Donna Grant's books and have been a huge fan of her works now for some years and I always love when she releases a new read - and this one was just perfect to read whilst wrapped up warm and cosy - it is almost like it gives you a warm hug!

It is a nice quick read and it is one that you can read and simply forget about the rest of the world for awhile. I thought that the book was well written, it had a great flow to it and it was just a lovely book to read. I love that these books are like escapism for me and I can sink into a book and feel like I have left the day to day and am joining them in their stories.

I love the Dragon Kings, they were the first of Donna's characters that I read about and honestly I can't get enough of them! I love Rhi, she is my favorite by far of all the women in the series and I loved catching up with her and Con.

I love the characterisation and the mix of personalities and how well they all work and fit together too and this one was a loving read when you get to read and share the thoughts that Con write all those years ago too - a wonderful read that pulls on your heartstrings and makes you want to give them both a big hug!

It is 5 stars from me for this one, a lovely novella - very highly recommended!

I must say I am loving these short stories that Donna Grant is whipping out! It gives me my much needed Con and Rhi fix due to my Dragon King addiction. I love that I can still be surprised this far into a series still. While I knew what this book was about, I'm not ashamed to admit that it still took my expectations and surpassed them. Ms. Grant really went the extra mile here and gave me what I (and pretty much every other Dragon King addict out there) have been begging for. Con was absolutely breaking my heart here! And looking back on the past and seeing it through him...just...why don't you stab me in the heart? It'll be quicker that way....

If anyone out there was thinking that they don't need to read this just because it's not really part of the storyline, you could not be more wrong! It gives you a glimpse into the mind of one of the most mystifying men that I have ever read about, and shows the man that has been hiding for centuries. This book has reminded me why I have fallen so hard for these characters. Heart of Gold has definitely earned it's rightful place in the King universe.

I've received this book as an ARC Angel for a honest review.

HEART OF GOLD is a novella that is a short story of the King of Golds, the King of Dragon Kings, Constantine and his Mate. During their long (very long) separation, while Con’s Mate was believing that she was forsaken by her King, Con was writing about his feelings and his love for his Mate in diaries. Red, leather covered diaries that held all of Con’s anguish, longing and love for his Mate. Though it was thought that Con had destroyed all of the red diaries, one lone diary survived, only to be found by his Mate. After reading the diary, Con’s Mate devises clues placed around the Distillery for him to follow to find her. I thoroughly enjoyed HEART OF GOLD and wished the story was longer (though this is the third story regarding Con and his Mate, with one novel and another novella previously released). While reading the novella, you will run the gamut of emotions, happy, sad, love, and back to happy. A wild ride, but definitely worth it because Con and his Mate have worked through and earned their happiness and forever. I would recommend HEART OF GOLD as the icing and cherry on the cake of Con and his Mate’s love story.

I received an ARC of this book from the author and have agreed to leave an honest opinion.

Life is good for Con and Rhi. They have been through so much apart and together. Just when they had found happiness, Con sent Rhi away and out of his life. He didn’t do it because he didn’t care, because he did. He did it because of the state of his brethren and the turmoil going on, his brethren needed his full attention and as King of Kings it was his responsibility.

Eons later they are together again, finally. Rhi spent thousands of years hating him for pushing her away but finally she realized the hate was because her heart was so broken. No man could ever fill Con’s shoes in her heart though.

She comes upon a journal and starts reading it. It is a journal that Con kept when they were apart. The words are just amazing! I think she met another whole side of Con through those words which is difficult since she knows him so well. You can do nothing else but love this story because it is a story of love and longing and the pain of loss, all in a journal.

Now she needs to release the man from his guilt...

I love this series!!!! Caution May Contain Spoilers!!
This is a short novella read from the Dark King Series by Ms. Grant.
And I am so glad that she wrote it. I love the fact that Rhi got the chance to read one of Con’s Red Journals. She gets a glimpse of what Con was going thru while they were apart for all those centuries and how he really felt about her. And also like the little treasure hunt she puts on for Con. I hope that Ms. Grant continues to give of glimpses of what life and love are like for Con and Rhi in the future. I feel like they are apart of me now, that how good Ms. Grant has built this world and its characters for me at least.
It gives you a little look into what the future books in the spin off series may be about and that’s great. Can’t wait for those books. And to find out who, what, when, and where the Twins are. Well, we got the who and where the Twins are in a previous book. Hope you read that one. Can’t wait for more on them also.
It was a great read. Looking forward to MORE PLEASE!!!

HEART OF GOLD is the latest novella in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult DARK KING paranormal/fantasy romance series focusing on the Dragon Kings and the women they love. This is the continuing story of Constantine, King of Dragon Kings, and his mate, Light Fae Rhiannon. HEART OF GOLD can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Rhi and Con) HEART OF GOLD focuses on Con’s red journals, journals in which he wrote his most intimate thoughts and professions of love for his mate Rhiannon. Thousands of years earlier, Con pushed Rhi out of his life, and in the ensuing time the guilt and grief consumed our story line couple. With their rekindling and second chance at their own happily ever after, Rhi finds Con’s journals, and embarks on a journey of love from the man she has never stopped loving, herself.

HEART OF GOLD is a story of heart break, reflection, acceptance and love. A quick look at one man’s thoughts about what was, what happened, and his need for the only woman that controls his heart.

Super sweet!! Love getting more about Con and Rhi! This is a short read that has Rhi reading some of Con’s passages in his journal about his feelings when Rhi and Con were separated. Just a touching read.

Grant is doing her darnedest to show that Con made the right decision by freezing out Rhi from his life; I still don’t fully agree with his choice, but I get it. My main contention with Con was the whole Usaeil thing; so disappointed in him about that, but I still really like Con. Con and Rhi are wonderful together. It does make me a bit mad and disappointed that the other Kings couldn’t handle one of their own being happy because of jealousy and such, so I still don’t think that reason is a good enough reason.

Overall, a wonderful read for anyone that has loved reading about Con and Rhi finding their way back to each other. I’d recommend readers at least having read Con and Rhi’s full book before this one to enjoy what this short read brings to their romance. So excited for them to meet their kids!!

Proof that love never dies

HEART OF GOLD
, another short story bringing readers some more of the love shared by Constantine and Rhi. After finally having a day to herself, Rhi finds the last surviving journal belonging to Con, and settles in to read it. Devastation and heartache confront her, and now she understands just how much she is loved and how hard their separation was on Con.

I thoroughly enjoyed HEART OF GOLD, mainly because finally, as a reader, I was able to witness the vulnerability, heartache and remorse Con held for the decision he made. Rhi too, was finally able to get a glimpse into the past of the man she always loved and see the pain he lived with for so many years. Con's anguish was at the forefront as was Rhi's acknowledgment of it ... now it's time to let the past lie in the past.

After a few little clues in this story, I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in the Dragon King Series and also the next novella Fire And Flame.

For lovers of Donna and her Dragon Kings, this is a highly recommended read.

I will never say no to getting more nuggets with Rhi and Con. For us fans of the Dragon King series, this is just that... a little nugget but oooo it's tasty. Once more Donna gives us a little treat, just in time for Valentine's Day. I will say this....do NOT read this book before reading Dragon Revealed...read it after but it will totally be worth it.

Rhi finds one of Con's red leather journals and what she finds inside provides not only her but also the reader a little bit of insight into why Con was acting the way he was in the past at certain times. It's rare for any reader to be given this much opportunities to see into a couples past history and on top of it, get to watch them as they learn from what happened and grow it. Plus the little scavenger hunt that Rhi sets Con on is fun to watch.

I highly recommend taking the time to read this Novella as it will be worth every single second invested. The little pieces that you get help fill in the pieces for the overall picture of the characters we love so much.

It took a long time for Constantine, King of the Dragon Kings and the Light Fae, Rhiannon 'Rhi' to get their happily ever after.

This is the perfect Valentine story for this couple as Rhi reads Constantine's red journals that pour out his love and anguish for pushing her away. As these two revisit the past, his journals are filled with beautiful heartfelt and heartbreaking emotions.

Just a few of my favorites between them:
'You touched not just my heart but also my soul. As no other has.'
'You've seen the ugly parts of me. And despite them, you still love me.'
'You are all that I need, all that I want. You're all I'll ever ask for.'

This whole novella is a beautiful valentine. I loved every moment and highly recommend it. If you haven't read their story, you're going to want to the entire series after reading this one.

The novella also includes a sneak peak of 'Fire and Flame.'

Such a wonderful installment into their lives. Donna Grant delivered the perfect novella to give us a feel into Con's and his mate's feeling toward the past and the future. To get a glimpse of what went on inside Con's head through his journals and even his meetings with his love after centuries apart was just heartwarming. I smiled and cried at the same time because I could feel his emotions come off the page, I could feel his love, I could feel his despair and loneliness. Donna picked the most perfect flashbacks and really gave us that closure on how he felt. Then we had their moment of healing toward the end and how sweet it came about. For Con to be given his own notes and his acceptance to let the past go was perfect. I truly loved this novella and can't wait to read it over and over again.

A sweet and poignant novella featuring Con, Rhi, and Con's red journals. When Con leaves a journal were she can find it, Rhi knew she was meant to read it. Through the pages, she is able to get real insight into the man she loves and the struggles he went through when he chose to put the lives of all the Dragon Kings before his own happiness.

This story touched my heart. I just felt for both Con and Rhi and all they've been through. I enjoyed it so much, I only wish it were longer (as I always do when I really enjoy a book). Many thanks to the author for writing such a heartfelt short story.

Con: "You whispered into my heart. You kissed my soul. And you showed me a love that I never dreamed could be mine." (le sigh)
