The poems in this volume are more political than anything else.

Very dated, but still magnificent.

His second book of verse. A Swinburne site warns me there was a great shift of focus from his first, Poems and Ballads, into political verse: “condemnations of tyranny and celebrations of liberty”, and much in service of the “Italian struggle”.

Perhaps 'Tiresias' is typical of this book, then. It's 386 lines in two parts. Part I is a Greek-set story, in the old style – but without his old faults, and I thought, splendid. Part II is about Italian liberty... I think. It takes a swing into visionary
