Confronting COVID-19: A Strategic Playbook for Leaders and Decision Makers

Rate this book
COVID-19 is the most challenging crisis the world has faced for almost a century. As a truly global pandemic, there is not a single country on earth – or even a single person – immune to the economic, political and social impact of the devastating virus.

This book analyses the coronavirus crisis in unparalleled depth.

The author begins in section one by framing the COVID-19 pandemic by categorically identifying variables and factors central to understanding how COVID-19 has panned out. This is followed in section two with an examination of the pandemic in the realms of politics, public health and economics

Section three comprises in-depth country case studies, complete with scenario mapping and a formulation of recommendations, before section four looks beyond the immediate imperatives of the ongoing pandemic and pictures our shared future in a 'post-Covid' world.

Confronting COVID-19’s combination of rigorous, evidence-based analyses, projections and actionable recommendations makes this a must-read book for all leaders and decision makers in public, private and community sectors. Most of all, the ideas presented within these pages command the urgent attention of those within the international policy-making community.

Confronting COVID-19: A Strategic Playbook for Leaders and Decision Makers
by Devadas Krishnadas

I do not intend to probe the author's impeccable credentials, nor the sound structure and the fluent manner the book is organized, in this review. All that is given in the product description.

Confronting COVID-19 is a thoroughly-researched work on the public- and international policy (as opposed to only epidemiological) aspects of COVID-19 governance. The book takes us on a virtual tour through governance, healthcare, politics and global economics and links them together.

Seven case studies relating to Singapore, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Sweden, the US and Canada -  have been presented, albeit briefly. One might accuse the author of a modest Singapore slant - an inside job, but factual nevertheless.

All those countries (I am stretching it from cities to countries) are from the Digital Havens category that is discussed towards the end of the book (Digital G-7, if I may), but as he clearly justifies, those are the ones for which credible data is available. But the three categories - Digital Havens, Digital Middle Spaces and Digital Deserts - are not water-tight compartments. There is bound to be significant variations both within and across the categories. That to some extent distorts the picture. Inequality and Inequity gaps will widen.

I now pose three questions to aid my assessment.

Is the book prophetic or pessimistic? Prophetic, as the turn of events shows.

Is it true globally? Most certainly yes, as the cropping up of the new Indian variant demonstrates. No one is safe, until everyone is safe.

Is it valid now, eight months later? The answer to that is: Can any book keep pace with COVID-19?  However, there is an urgent need for an update. For instance, the Germany-WHO Berlin Hub, Biden's MMT in disguise, and his helicopter money stimulus, India's official 3 deaths per minute (as of May 21, 2021) and 12 deaths per minute as per The Economist model, India's reckless election rallies and Kumbh Mela, makeshift graveyards, bodies thrown into Ganges, dearth of oxygen cylinders, beds, ventilators, non-availability of vaccines, etc.,

I request the author and Marshall Cavendish International (Asia) Pte Ltd. to devise a regular update protocol.

Is the book a classic? To quote Zhou Enlai, “Too early to say.” But, of one thing I am sure. Confronting COVID-19 is well on its way to become one.

I wish every MP, Senator, Legislator or Representative reads the book.

So should every citizen.
