Seit 2010 arbeitet er neben dem Schreiben als Deutsch- und Sportlehrer. Sein Debüt Idiotensicher (Hanser 2015) erntete großes Lob bei der Presse, sein zweites Buch Abgefahren war 2019 für den Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreis nominiert. 2020 folgte sein Jugendroman Still! Dirk Pope war 2020 erneut für den Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreis nominiert (Sonderpreis „Neue Talente“). Er lebt mit seiner Familie in Frankfurt am Main.

Ich habe keine Worte für dieses Buch.
Ich bin STILLgelegt.
Nicht, weil ich es so gut fand. Es war gut, aber es war nicht überraschend gut.
Es war melancholisch, atmosphärisch, aber in keinster Weise irgendwie kitschig.
Wobei vielleicht hätte es Züge von Kitsch haben können, wäre das Ende nicht so... ja, so wahr und echt gewesen.
Es sollte ein Buch über eine erfundene Geschichte mit Mutismus als tragendes Thema sein, doch letztlich war dieses Buch irgendwie noch viel mehr und gleichzeitig nichts.
Dennoch finde ich ist das Buch es wert, gelesen zu werden. Es ist nicht dick, eher übertrieben schmal, aber es sagt viel aus, was vielleicht gesagt werden müsste oder was eben nicht gesagt werden dürfte.

Drei Sterne im Sinne von "Sehr gut".
Mariellas Welt ist Stille, denn sie hat beschlossen zu schweigen.
Der Rest der Welt ist laut, darin werden vielzuviele unnütze Worte und Wörter vergossen, sodass vor lauter Laut niemand mehr richtig hört.
Stans Welt ist ebenfalls Stille, denn er kann wirklich nicht hören, aber er ist der einzige, der wirklich Mariella versteht.
Der Rest der Welt kann Mariella nicht verstehen, nicht weil sie still IST, sondern weil sie STILL ist.
Um ihr einen Laut zu entlocken, wird auf sie eingeredet, -geschimpft, -geschrien, -gebrüllt. Und so kann sie nur stillschweigend mitansehen, wie ihre Welt und Stans Welt und der Rest der Welt drohen, mit einem ohrenberäubenden Knall aufeinanderzuprallen.

—A Novel with a Powerful Message!—
Since her parents’ separation, Mariella hasn’t spoken a word. Many people find this troubling and try to force her to talk. As a result, she becomes a target for some of her classmates. But then she meets Stan. Stan is deaf, and he doesn’t seem to mind that Mariella doesn’t speak.
From the very beginning, I found this short novel captivating. Although Mariella doesn’t speak, she has a rich inner monologue. Through her thoughts, you get a real sense of what a remarkable character she is. Mariella questions a lot and notices things that others tend to overlook. This adds a personal touch and sets the novel apart from others. The writing style is both simple and surprisingly complex. That may sound contradictory, but here’s what I mean: Mariella might reflect on something small, like her two goldfish, and from that, an entire chain of thoughts and questions unfolds—each one leading deeper. This unique narrative style encourages the reader to reflect as well.
Mariella’s silence isn’t just defiance; her reasons are far more meaningful. She believes people talk too much and that all this chatter needs a counterbalance: silence. In her view, there must be people who choose quiet over meaningless words. But this choice makes her life incredibly difficult. Many teachers refuse to accept her silence and single her out in front of the whole class. Then there are her classmates, who tease her in an attempt to provoke her into speaking. And finally, there are her parents. Her mother is desperate, and her father is simply terrible. We only get a small glimpse of him, but it’s thoroughly negative.
Eventually, Stan enters the story—someone she meets only once—but from that point, a shift in her begins. They accept each other as they are and get along well. But that doesn’t last long, and something terrible happens. I won’t spoil it here, but I will say this: the event feels somewhat disconnected from the rest of the story, and a more realistic plot development might have been a better choice. Still, Mariella’s character development is impressive and completely believable.
What stood out to me especially were the conversations presented as dialogues at the end. First, there are messages exchanged between Mariella and Stan. These simplify their communication for the reader, since their sign language isn’t otherwise accessible. These messages are witty and insightful. Then there are imagined dialogues between various people and elements from Mariella’s life—her goldfish, her mother, and her teachers. These conversations, of course, don’t actually take place—the people often don’t know each other, don’t exist, or can’t speak—but they prompt the reader to think and reflect deeply.
My personal highlight was the inserted dialogues between Mariella and the “Institute for Applied Silence.” Whether these truly happened, are a product of her imagination, or serve as a metaphor is unclear. Mariella tells the Institute what’s happened and explains the reasons behind her silence. The Institute then analyzes her words and asks thoughtful, probing questions. It’s simply brilliant!
This novel is a beautiful and impactful reading experience. It’s also incredibly well-suited for classroom discussion, as there’s so much to explore—and it never becomes boring.

Ein schönes Buch mit interessanten Gedanken und einer schönen Geschichte. So besonders, wie ich es gehofft hatte war es allerdings nicht. Man kann es schon lesen, aber es hatte jetzt kein Lieblingsbuchpotential.
