Veslor Mates #4

Mission: Planet Biter

Rate this book
When his Veslor grouping answers a distress call on planet Biter, Roth discovers a sole survivor. The little female isn't rational and latches onto him like a lifeline. That surprises Roth, since most humans fear him. This one won't let him go, but he must resist his desire for her. It's the only honorable thing to do.

Stuck on an alien planet, her facility sabotaged and all her coworkers dead or dying, Vera Wade isn't sure she'll make it out alive. They've all been exposed to a drug that is making them crazy.

She's slowly losing all hope, until an alien shows up. He feels real, but he's probably just another hallucination. A sexy one who seems too good to be true.

Now she just needs to convince Roth that their attraction is definitely real, once the drugs leave her system . . . before the unknown person trying to kill her finishes the job.

I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.

No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.

I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.

I don't know why I keep reading these. Maybe I think they'll suddenly turn into the New Species series? Who knows.

What I do know is, like the last few, this lacks character development and steam. The relationship went from 0 to 60 in just a few chapters because it was so short and the world building is mediocre at best. Deeply disappointed that these aren't on par to Dohner's earlier books.

Dang, Roth was such a sexy superhero!

Mystery and sabotage abound. Vera needs saving. The Veslors come to the rescue, but Roth steps up to the plate to protect and bring Vera through it all.

I love this series. Each book is so good! I am rubbing my hands together in anticipation for Jessa and Maith's book, because they are barreling towards each other like two freight trains lol!!

3 "Don't leave me!" Stars!

This one wasn't my favorite, but it was still entertaining and funny. There was just a lot of Vera begging Roth not to go and him saying I won't leave you. Then him telling her she'd been through a lot of trauma and she wasn't "ready" then her trying to convince him she was. And there was a whole who done it mystery to solve; which was interesting. So not bad but not great. I still love LD. She an auto buy for me.

Now I can't wait for Maith's book. I really hope it's soon and his mate is Jessa.

I still miss having new New Species books. Soon please Ms. Donher??

Happy reading!

This was much better than my last two/three reads, so I'm glad! :)

I liked the story and the hero & heroine!

A small thing bothered me: while she was out with the drug, she had some very lucid moments where at the same time she was doubting her own eyes... that I found a little bit incredible...

Otherwise it was a nice read.

Poor Vera is in a very bad situation and just fighting to survive. When Roth finds her, she doesn't know who or what to believe but she feels safe with him.
Roth's protective nature comes out full force and he tries to remain impartial to Vera. He doesn't think she can love him so Vera has her work cut out for her.

Another great addition to the series. This time with a heroine who latches on and refuses to let go. After being rescued from her sabotaged base and the lone survivor, meeting a huge kind Veslor is just what Vera needs to feel safe. I loved that the heroine was so determined to make Roth hers, the poor guy never stood a chance. Protecting Vera comes naturally to Roth and their time together is more than just her needing him to help her stay alive. As the sole survivor, Vera easily would have taken the fall had she not had Roth’s protection. A private company used Vera and her colleagues as a test subjects that they hoped could easily be wiped away. Unfortunately for them, Roth's protection of Vera makes pinning everything on her, locking her up and throwing away the key rather hard. Vera was just such a fun character. Even while drugged she’s more fascinated and intrigued by the thought of aliens than she is frightened. Even when it came to mating with Roth, Vera was full steam ahead ready to dive in head first, I really loved her take charge attitude. Such a fun read, hope this isn’t the last.

I forgot I had started this last night. The beginning was funny as Vera was pleading with Roth not to go. Also, can I just say I loved the name Vera Wade? It made me think of the designer.

With Veslors, mating is marrying, except there's no possibility of divorce. I get that Vera and Roth really like each other; however, they don't know each other long enough or well enough to be able to make that serious of a commitment. And here I was thinking I was a hopeless romantic, but writing this I feel cynical. Maybe when you know, you know. But seriously I thought I was going to marry this guy I met over the summer and now he's got me blocked on Instagram. So you never know for sure.

Moreover, I felt like Vera was latching on to him because she was afraid she wasn't going to meet another guy as good, mainly because she hadn't. The two guys she had dated (humans from Earth) were jerks, so when she finally met a good guy who liked her back, she attached on to him. I think she wanted to imprint on him badly, and it didn't hurt that Roth is handsome, so it made catching feelings for him easier. I really don't know what they have in common. Vera was thinking how it was easy to fall in love with Roth because he was super sweet and handsome. I have a friend who is sweet. I'm not definitely not in love with him.

Anyway, that's just my two cents about the matter. Like I had said in a previous review of one of the books in this series, I'm (still) impressed by Laurann's imagination of the whole bureaucracy of these futuristic agencies like New Worlds. However, while writing this I am forgetting why the drug was put in the pods in the first place. That could have been a little more fleshed out or repeated just for clarity's (aka the reader's) sake. There were also a few grammatical mistakes. For example, "though" instead of "through".

Now onto read Act 2 of La Casa de Bernarda, my Spanish hw that I've been procrastinating in order to finish this book. Ugh hw.

You’re real. Right? You don’t want to kill me or think I’m food?

This was Vera and Roth’s story. The leader of this grouping and scary boss. That start was intense. Vera was stuck in a really bad situation. Roth came to her rescue and became her life line. Seriously, he was the only one who could calm her down. It was so sweet to see how protective and kind he was towards her. It’s anybody’s worst nightmare to have your own brain go against you. It was so sad how Vera kept asking Roth if he was real.

There’s only one single guy left in this group and as much as I wanted Maith and Jessa to get together I’m scared. He really hates her. The next book will most likely be theirs, an enemy to lovers, km guessing but I need to see it. Right now I was Jessa to find someone better.

So I read and very much enjoyed books 1 and 2 in this series. Skipped 3 because any book with 'breeding' in the title gives me the willies. I gotta say: books 1 and 2 are waaay better than book 4.

It starts out with a bang that had my heart racing, I was fuckin' HOOKED. And then it just seemed to reek of desperation. Admittedly, the MC is in a desperate situation to begin with, but that desperation didn't lessen. It continued through the romance and I didn't like that.

So, I definitely recommend books 1 and 2 for any fans of alien romance or first contact drama, but book 4 is ehhh... wouldn't recommend.

Well this was bloody awful. It started off strong but then I wasn't feeling anything for these two characters at all. I also skimmed. If this is the end of the series then it is very disappointing and anti-climatic.

Moving on.

I don't know what happened, but this fell flat for me.

I was ALL in when it came to the premise setup, Vera and her coworkers being drugged and going wacko ect. I didn't really like Vera though, more specifically her actions when she was coming out of her drug induce psychosis, than anything. Relationships develop quickly for Veslors but it felt almost like Vera was doing everything she could into forcing Roth to be with her just because she'd never had anything truly GOOD before and didn't want to lose the opportunity.

Roth was meh for me, he wasn't good or bad. I guess everyone has a book in a series that they just don't like as much as the others. This was mine.

Another good one with familiar Laurann Dohner tropes: feisty heroine, wounded by the people in her past, meets a protective alien hero who supports her and provides the TLC she needs. Mission:Planet Biter started off with a heck of hook. I couldn't put the book down.

1.5 stars.

This was weird. I needed something light-hearted after my last read and this seemed interesting enough.

I physically face-palmed two times when reading this. A lot of stuff didn’t make any sense, there wasn’t really any pining or longing, the madness part was pure plot driver (and not even well done / intriguing) and just vanished after it had done its duty.
This is the first book of this series I read and it was bored by all the previous heroes who do not have any conflicts, flaws or development potential after their original story.

I actually expected the book to pick up pace after the intense honeymoon phase/initial coupling, but it simply ended there. I was hoping for the couple to find faults in each other but powering through and still accepting each other as they are.

Oh, well.

It's MEH. Not good, not bad, not really anything at all. Very mellow insta love. I expected Roth to be more against the mate, mostly because of his reasonings and actions in previous books. Here it is like he is no more the Roth we have been introduced to. His grouping was all washed out too. Vera....uhhh...very sweet character with ultimately no personality.
The conflict got resolved way too easily . There was no deeper plot.

So in short. Nothing to dislike, but unfortunately nothing to really like either.

More please....

This is a continuation of the Veslor grouping on Defcon Red. Roth, the leader of the grouping assists in rescuing a woman who is the lone survivor on a new planet. She was part of the first surveyor team, which was drugged with hallucinogenic drugs that caused the entire team to either murder each other or commit suicide.

Though Vera was rescued, her troubles continue with an assassination attempt on the ship. Roth was surprisingly sweet considering how he was portrayed in the previous books. Absolutely loved it.

Now if we can just get the grumpy medic hooked up, it would be perfect. I vote for Jessa to be his mate. Lots of sparks would fly. Would be entertaining to see friend/enemy relationship become something beautiful and lasting.

Roth and Vera

Vera is a drone operator on a planet currently under exploration. Only, something is wrong, and some drug has poisoned her and the crew.
Roth is the leader of his grouping of Veslors, alien shifters. When he is sent to rescue the humans on the settlement, he runs across just one survivour, who won’t let him out of her sight.
Vera clings to Roth as the only safe thing in her world of hallucinations, and it’s not long before feelings start to emerge...

This is the fourth Veslor mates book, the third featuring the grouping of fighters residing on the battleship Defcon Red.
Vera is a lonely human woman, who has been burnt in the past by human males, while Roth is a Veslor male who refused to conform.
Like most of Laurann’s books, this is a fast paced, action packed story, with a detailed universe, and some intriguing aliens.

Recommended for sci-fi romance fans, and lovers of shifters.

Okay, so here’s the deal folks… I know I read this book, I know I reviewed this book, but somehow my review is not on here… So I will try to write one now as best I can with months in between 😁

I remember liking this book. I found Vera’s connection to Roth to be unique and I love how she clung onto him for her own sanity. It made me laugh more than a few times and feel the feels.

I'm done. I quit. I can't handle it anymore. Dohner had two chances after the first book to improve this series. My sanity can't take any more of these mediocre books. Bye.

📍 I felt nothing for this book. Nothing for the characters. Nothing for the romance. NOTHING. I was about 70% and the was about to happen and I realized I didn't care if this couple got together or not. I gave zero f--ks. It could have been two planks of wood and I would have had the same amount of interest. The romance in this romance book was a big ball of nothingness.

📍 The romance was also very weird. Vera wanted Roth and chose him based on like a literal list in her head of things that made him an ideal partner. He was attractive, guaranteed to be loyal, caring, and potentially a good father so she decided he would do. There was nothing in her mind about his individual personality. This would have worked if she was later challenged in her viewpoint, but no, that would be far too complex for a Dohner book.

He could be the one man to make her happy and who would stick by her no matter what the future held. She needed to keep him.

I want to keep him. I’m never going to find anyone better than Roth.

Who thinks like this? This is the most unhealthiest way of viewing someone as a partner.

Vera was never in love with Roth, she was in love with what Roth could give her. She knew he could make her happy based off her list of requirements, but she was far too self-absorbed to consider if she could make him happy. Poor Roth was basically a supporting character and had all the character development of a stick. Not that Vera had any arc as a character either...

📍 When Vera was dr-gged out of her mind, I had the strongest urge to skim. Nothing she said trying to be entertaining was funny or in the least bit entertaining. It was all just cringe.

📍 The characters say the oddest things sometimes. Completely random things that make no sense. The more I read this series, the more I notice it. Am I the only one who noticed it?

📍 Non-con makes an appearance. I thought I left that behind in the third book but no. Do we really need to say it again? No means no.

📍 Again with the p!ss. This feels intentional at this point. Why does every book in this series include a scene (or scenes here!) where the characters or some character p!sses in front of another character. Why is everyone p!ssing all the time in this series? I get normal bodily functions and all that but all the p!ss scenes have been unnecessary. Why is this a pattern in this series?

📍 I feel validated in my decision to not continue this series because the next book is Jessa and Maith and I can't tolerate them together. And I doubt Dohner would be able to take my favorite enemies-to-lovers trope and do it right.

“You shouldn’t even be here,” Maith snarled.
“Well, I am.” Jessa lifted her hand and flipped him off. “That’s something else that’s rude. Just so you know.”

⚠️ CW: Dr-gs. Dub-con/non-con. Gore. Overd0$e death.

I'm freeeee. I'm done with this series. Dohner used to be one of my favorite authors but the writing magic isn't there anymore. Dohner's style has changed and I'm not a fan. A girl can only handle so many 1 star books.
