The Witch in the Envelope

This Sleeping Beauty retelling about a girl, her lost memories, and the boy who disappeared is an addictive fantasy romance perfect for fans of Twilight, Graceling, and 90s cult classics like Clueless, Hocus Pocus, and The Witches.

B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree

Forbidden love could be her greatest downfall…or her saving grace.

When Liddy Erickson was a child, a hauntingly beautiful yet vicious witch plagued her dreams. But when she wakes one morning with a deep gash on her chest in the same place the witch attacked her, she realizes these were no ordinary nightmares.

Shortly after she confides in her best friend, Will, his entire family disappears, along with her memories of them.

It’s now 1998, and seventeen-year-old Liddy has one goal—to move out of the cold Chicago suburbs after graduation. Two things that are not in her perfectly planned life: fun and dating.

That is until the new transfer student catches the eye of every girl at Wheeling High School.

With intriguing scars and eyes that seem to glow, he awakens something inexplicable in Liddy and proves to know her even better than her closest friends.

When a stranger with a distinct melodic chime to his walk saves Liddy from opening an enchanted envelope, he reveals an outrageous claim that she is a lost Watcher and the saving grace for his homeland, Cristes. Liddy must decide if she can trust the stranger’s orders or risk condemning an entire nation.

The Witch in the Envelope is the first in a trilogy (set to complete, with a “happily ever after” ending, in winter 2022). It’s perfect for fantasy romance fans looking for all the tension of a slow-burn and swoon-worthy couple, but with the graphic steam and spice happening off the page.

My first book of 2021, and it's one that really captures the imagination! I sped through this book, not able to wait to find out what happens next. 90s, romance, danger, magic, and amazing characters that you can't help but love (or hate!); this is a fantastic debut by Laura Detering and I can't wait to find out surprises the rest of the story holds...

Everything and MORE!

90s nostalgia, mystical fantasy, slow-burn romance… This book has it all!

I’m in love with this book. I literally couldn’t put it down. The 90s references were genius, the mystery to the fantastical world in this book was delectable, and the romance was TO DIE FOR! I can’t get over it! The romance was cute, sweet… Everything I personally like in a romance.

My one complaint was that the flow felt slightly halting at times, with long paragraphs and sentences, but that is me being nit-picky.

Overall, I rate this book 4.8/5 stars.

Oh, how I just absolutely love a good paranormal romance! I seriously loved this one. It was just so good! I was instantly completely absorbed by this world the author has created. It was a fast paced read and I seriously struggled to put it down! I loved the characters and the fact that the main events of the book take place in the 90s. As a kid born in the early 90s I absolutely loved all the nods towards that time period! I'm talking butterfly hair clips, dial up internet (eek!), aim instant messenger, Justin & Britney! It was very nostalgic, that much is for sure!
Oh, and Will... he has most definitely been added to my list of book boyfriends!
This is another book that I could easily see being made into a movie or tv show... and I honestly feel like I need that in my life.
I am now more excited than ever for the release of book two in this series. It has definitely been added to my most anticipated reads list of 2021!

If you haven't read this one yet and you're a fan of YA paranormal romance or if this just sounds like something you'd enjoy reading, you should most definitely give it a try sometime!

A Witch in the Envelope is a walk down memory lane in a fantastic urban fantasy setting.
Are you a 90’s kid? Do you love YA books? Do you love fantasy with romance?
I have the book for you!! I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. I think my mood reading kicked in and prevented me from starting this book. Once I started I could not put it down! The romance was endearing.
Childhood best friends separated and their memories of each other wiped, then reunited.
We just get a taste of the magic in this book but it seems to be a very unique system and an original world. This book definitely lays a solid groundwork for the following books.

I have to admit I think the title was the thing that made me hesitant to read. I’m not exactly sure why... I’m still not 100% convinced about the title... There were envelopes in the story connected to a witch but the witch wasn’t in the envelope...at least not directly, it was more of a tool. At least as far as we learn. This is such a silly point to get hung up on. I really am looking forward to seeing where this story goes!

I fell in love with this book right as I picked it up, If my mom didn’t tell me to do other things I would’ve finished it in one sitting. The mix of romance and adventure was perfect for both my friends and myself. Now I have a group chat with all my friends just for talking about this. Can’t wait for a book two!

◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦

From the very first few pages, I felt so many mixed emotions. The story began with Will and Lydia getting to know themselves and developing a very beautiful and strong relationship, but at the same time, the story felt very mysterious – beginning with Will’s parents who were acting a little bit awkward towards Lydia to Lydia having these very real nightmares that would wake her up in screams and sweat.

The book and the mystery involving the friendship of Lydia and Will literary blew my mind. I had so many questions that were unanswered for a good portion of the book, but exactly this reason made me love the book even more. I really enjoyed the fact not all of my questions were answered right away, hooking you and keeping you on your toes to keep on reading and find what happened 8 years ago. Another reason that made the book feel very mysterious was the magic, the magic was there lingering in the air but no one knew about their powers (if any at all) or if the magic is actually involved until later on and this fact was really amazing.

I loved the friendship and later on, the relationship Will and Lydia had, they were relationship goals, they were honest with each other, very open about their feelings even when things weren’t the best. And the tension between the two was just perfect. However, I felt like their first kiss didn’t deliver the sparks that were building throughout the book – I was waiting for the big explosion of emotions, for toes to curl and the world to stop when they first kissed, but sadly that wasn’t it. I couldn’t feel all that and for me their first kiss and the rest of them felt a little bit flat, lacking the emotions we got through the tense moments when they weren’t kissing.

Another thing that felt a little bit flat for me was towards the end when Pree has found out what Lydia and Will actually are, her reactions didn’t give me much emotion, she was just so okay with everything, which didn’t felt right. I was expecting her to be a little bit more afraid, more questioning more confusing, and not so okay and trusty with everything that happened, the supernatural world the magic she was just all fine and ready for action and I felt that wasn’t very realistic.

Another thing that got me a little bit confused was the use of the comma. I usually don’t mention the grammatical things, but on some sentences, I felt the comma was missing and was really needed. Longer sentences, or where there was needed a comma for a small break were missing – this was a little bit of a turn-off for me because I needed to stop and re-read the sentence so it sounds right in my head.

Overall the story has been amazing to read. From the ’90s, the romance, the magical system that has been very intriguing to me to the characters who were very lovable almost all of them. I’m really excited to get to read the next one to get to know more about their magic and their world. And even tho this book didn’t have any character development – both, Will and Lydia had lots of challenges to go through which strengthen their bond and their overall relationship.

This book revolves around two people, William and Lydia. Both of them incredibly strong characters, breaking all sorts of predetermined stereotypes for men and women ( unfortunately the stereotypes aren't limited only to the real world). William and Lydia have been friends since they were kids and as young adults are now destined to  fight off great evil while also navigating through their growing feelings for each other. I know what you're CLICHÉ, why Roha why would we pick this book up.

Because, it's really engaging, an important element to any story. The story kicks off from the beginning, never missing a beat to pluck us up from one tumultuous situation and throwing us into another. It keeps you on the edge of your seat because you, like Will and Lydia, need answers.
It also gives an ode to The Princess Bride and Sleeping Beauty, if I may be so bold as to say this actually is a a very subtle retelling of Sleeping Beauty!!! And as a huge fan of that classic, I was pleasantly surprised and loved this book even more.

I loved the execution of all characters, from the side characters to the main characters, all of them were refreshing because they didn't conform to the main stereotypes we always see everywhere.
Will was a gentle loving soul who would get crushed easily whereas Lydia was fierce and assertive while also being polite and considerate. The side characters were very mature and self secure characters which is why I loved their support for our MC. I appreciated the author on including an asian character and getting the mother - daughter relationship accurate to some extent. Although the character identified as Indian, I laughed along with her because the interactions between Pree and Mrs Parekh were something every asian girl can relate to. Kudos to the author for giving Pree a major role in this book. Many authors diversify their books to the extent of the side character appearing scarcely throughout the book but not this one.
I am telling you the subtle ways this book broke stereotypes was commendable.
How our guy wasn't so tough all the time, he was tearing up more than Lydia 😅 which was so adorable, I just wanted to wrap him in a bear hug.
I dont wanna give away alot because I want you to experience the subtleness yourself but I will share one last one,
theres a scene where a character gets so badly hurt that they are literally unidentifiable. When they are physically healed with no marks of the torture inflicted on them, the character is congratulated on their physical recovery.
Now this is where the author subtles mentions mental health by the mother who comments on their child's physical recovery but then points out that the scar the event left on their brain would take a long time to heal but for now lets count our blessings.
I was in awe of this book because like the aforementioned examples, there are so many others that I noticed throughout the book that made my heart soar.
Many authors are breaking stereotypes these days but not to this extent. This book mentioned how one has to find happiness within themselves but also that companionship in any ahape or form amplifies that happiness. While other books these days are focused on self happiness and dismiss happiness brought on by companionship, inadvertently giving the message that companionship is a form of weakness, real fierce independent women don't need companionship.
Which my lovelies is scientifically wrong !!

The writing was a bit juvenile and a bit repetitive but honestly it didn't bother me because everything else was perfect.

This story is such a fun nostalgia fest! Readers who remember life in the '90s will love all the throwback references, but there's something for every YA fan here. This book hearkens back to the YA books from that time period while still feeling fresh and fun. And I agree with other reviewers; this book is un-put-down-able! I've been in a fiction slump since 2020 but sped right through this; I just couldn't wait to see what happened next. Lydia and Will are easy to root for and even the potential villains are relatable with intriguing back stories. I am a sucker for childhood sweetheart stories; throw in a Sleeping Beauty retelling and I am sold! Can't wait for book 2 to come out, and I'm so excited this is part of a trilogy!

This was a VERY different book than I was expecting, but I thoroughly enjoyed and I want to know more. I really liked the concept of the plot and it had so much mystery about it all that it left me with SO MANY QUESTIONS! There was so much information that was going on in the book that I kept having to go back to what I just read to get it all straight.

There was so many interesting elements between the magic, the mysteries of the book world, and the characters, but there is still so much to explore! I need the next book as soon as possible!

Fun 90s YA fantasy!

Unique story about teenagers in the 90s figuring out they are from another world and have powers. There was so much 90s goodness throughout, I was feeling nostalgic! The 90s slang, clothes, references… they brought me right back to my old high school days! Enjoyed this YA fantasy!

This book hooked me from the very beginning. It has 90's nostalgia, magic, slow-burn, and so m7ch more. Laura Detering did a fantastic job on this debut novel. Lydia and Will became best friends when Will's family moved into the neighborhood, until one night something tragic and mysterious happened and Will's family moved away. Fast forward to when Lydia is a junior in high school and Will moves back. Strange thing is, Lydia doesn't remember her past with Will, until he touches her. What happened in the past and why has Lydia's very real Nightmares returned? I 10 out of 10 highly recommend this book if you love Young Adult fantasy, magic, mystery, 90's nostalgia, and more. If I didn't have to adult orsleep, I would read all day and night to see how this series ends. I am looking forward to diving into the second book of this trilogy.

This was an enjoyable and impressive debut novel however I just could not get into it.

From the start I applauded towards the unique concept idea for the storyline and the incredibly detailed writing style from this new author but personally struggled a lot with staying entertained and caring for the characters or where the plot was going.

This could be because of multiple reasons which are nothing against this book because honestly it is such a well done first instalment within a fantasy series that can easily be read in one sitting and loved by many. There is romance, 90s nostalgia, banter, magic, friendship, mystery and loads of real world vs fantasy themes.

As I said, the characters were an aspect I found hard to care for since they weren’t anything new and interesting to me. The friendships between them all was comforting and humorous.

The romance was an extreme slow-burn and gave all the cute/innocent vibes being perfect for young adults however due to not connecting with either the plot or characters, it was also hard for me to enjoy this aspect.

The ending was perfectly executed and I’m excited to read the next instalment within this trilogy to know where everything goes next.

Overall, this was an okay read to pass some time that I enjoyed on a surface level.

💌 I loved how this book started out. The two protagonists, Liddy and Will, are children for the first few chapters. While overtly everything seemed like a typically normal suburban setting, I could practically feel the magic in the air. When Will (and his whole family) suddenly and mysteriously disappears along with any memories Liddy has of them, I was left simultaneously wanting to know why and wishing he would come back into the story.

💌 Flash forward, and Liddy is teen/young adult, when a handsome Will makes is reappearance. I enjoyed the fact that Liddy wasn't portrayed with the stick thin body or perfect body, she was a little more curvy. And her friends weren't absolutely perfect looking either. I'm not particularly fond when every single main character is seemingly perfect looking, and I'm glad authors are moving away from this trend. I related so much with the heroine which made me love her even more.
- Like her I also am tragically prone to falling for jump scares 😬
- I also had insane amounts of instant chemistry with my man when we first met like it was just meant to be so much so that it scared us some 😍
- I'm also a bit curvy 😉
- My favorite body wash is also coconut and hibiscus 😂

💌 At first I thought some parts were a little too squealing teen and not enough young adult for me. But then I realized by making it somewhat teen cringe in the beginning, it only emphasized how much Liddy matured as she figured out her destiny and who she is supposed to be throughout the story. I love the "meant to be" trope, especially when it's not predictable, and this book definitely did not disappoint.

💌 The cover is beautiful and intriguing. I knew I wanted to read the book as soon as I saw the cover. Also, I absolutely adored how the author incorporates her love of dance and singing into her novel. The strength she shows in the face of her chronic illness is inspiring.

💌 This was the best witchy and magical read for October. I love fantasy books with a little bit of mystery, a little bit of romance, and a little bit of scary all thrown in. This book was a perfectly balanced. I CAN’T WAIT TO READ BOOK 2!

*this e-arc was sent to me by the author to give an honest review in return*

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's about 17 years old Libby who wakes up with a gash on her chest and moves to a new city where she meets a guy who opens up her entire world. I liked the whole fact that this book was a Sleeping Beauty retelling. It wasn't heavy on it and it was kind of like the amount in ACOTAR. I enjoyed the new world-building in this book which was easy to understand but it was so unique and very cool! When I first started this book, I was expecting it to be kind of middle grade due to the title because I read something similar to it with a similar title. But I was totally wrong and it's one of my favorite paranormal romance books after a long time. The pacing was a little slow at times for but the plot structure was well set up.

The main character in this book is Libby and I enjoyed her character. She is fun and goes on many adventures that don't get boring. She also had a great character development in the book. The side characters were well written and I enjoyed how the author wrote many characters for the book. I especially enjoyed Will's character and his development. There is a forbidden romance in this book which is one of my favorite tropes but I kind of enjoyed it in this book but also didn't.

The ending was well done and I need to read the second book! This story was well written and is very compelling. I did have some minor problems with the book like the pacing and romance but overall this story was greatly done. I totally recommend that you read this book because it's amazing!

Wowww, I recently ‘met’ this author on Facebook and I cannot begin to tell you how glad I am that I did. She is definitely a new favorite.

This book gripped me instantly, and still, only managed to grow even MORE gripping as it went on. The MCs are kids, then teenagers, and I’m very much not (in my 30s) but still found them highly relatable. (The flashback to the 90s prove the author either was there or did a great job doing her research; these took me back!)

This is set in the real world, present day, but there’s definitely something supernatural going on … the question is, what exactly. It’s just the right amount of mysterious that I’m intrigued, but not bothering to try to predict it, because I’m so engrossed in Lydia’s life, etc. I just … enjoyed it and lived it and found myself in a world I never wanted to leave.

Much of it is set in high school and it’s all very plausible, but an easy read, complete with mean girls, creepy guys, jocks … it took me back a little but mostly I was just engrossed in their world.

In addition to mystery and a bit of nostalgia, this book also packs action, real feels, young love, friendship & loyalty, adventure, Christmas feel (at times) and more. Absolutely dying for the next book in this series.

4.5 stars

This book had me hooked! Mysterious and romantic, swoony moments with all the feels. Full of a strange mythology that took all book to somewhat figure out, but still in need of more info and a book two. Loved this! The story definitely felt like a cool supernatural teen show on the CW or Freeform.

Lydia and Will are adorable! I love them together! The book starts with their childhood insta best friendship. Immediately drawn to each other. Already you know something is up! How are they connected with this instant bond they have for each other? His parents seem to be so pleased with this that you have to wonder what they know too. And what about her parents? Are they in on it?

But then something happens one night that erases them from each other’s memories and Will’s family is gone. Lydia moves on with her life and grows into this smart, kind teenager with a loyal group of close friends and plans to make something great of herself away from her small wintery town.

Then Will is suddenly back and things start to piece themselves together for Lydia again. The slow burn of their rekindled friendship and then relationship was like *chef’s kiss* as they worked together to figure out what everything means. Escaping the big bad that haunts Lydia throughout the story.

Love all the magic and special abilities! I was on the edge of my seat as I followed Lydia and Will. I immediately dived into book two! Really enjoying the experience while still needing more answers.

This book had me HOOKED! I could seriously not put it down. It took me less than 24 hours to read, and I had to know what happened next. I adored the main character, and found her super relatable, and the chemistry between Liddy & Will was amazing. I also loved the character’s friends, esp Pree! There were a lot of twists and turns, and points that felt scary and where the tensions were high! I also never knew who to trust, so it had a great mystery element to it that had me coming up with so many theories!

I love the fact that it felt like a wholesome teenage romance story at parts, and then a unique fantasy world at others, and then when they merged it was magical! Very interested to see where this series goes & to check out the author’s other books! She’s great at writing and I found her world very immersive & I was able to picture everything so clearly.

You won’t regret picking this book up!

Laura Detering has woven a timeless tale that is familiar, yet fresh and exciting. The magic system and world building are top-notched, revealing a world that is rich with wonder and immersive in its detail.
And not only that, it was a wonderful walk down memory lane as Detering artfully uses familiar elements of the 1990s to set the tone and bring us back to a time that we had long forgot.
One area that I'd like to spotlight is the tender side of romance that is all too often lost in a great story. The romance between the main characters, Will and Liddy, is palpable and realistic, yet Detering doesn't push the envelope (pun intended) when it comes to the sexual tension between several of the characters... its there, but the author masterfully weaves it into the story, holding back the "spice" and shows us that a good romance story doesn't have to lead to sex.
I'm looking forward to the next installment of what seems to be the start of a fantastic and fun series.

ARC sent by the author, all opinions are mine.

The Witch In The Envelope has a very nostalgic feel to it, maybe because it’s set in the 90s and it brought me back a little. Also magic in the 90s? Perfect combo. It was a fast and page-turning read and I could barely put it down, I only wanted to know more. The short chapters also helped a lot. My favourites and most fascinating parts of the story are the main character (Lydia) dreams… imagine being haunted by a witch while you sleep. There is so much you can explore with this! The story also feels high-stakes, I love when authors don’t shy away from it. I also enjoyed discovering the magic world as the main characters did. It was nice to have the same information as them. Overall, this is a very enjoyable read and I’m curious to see where the second book will lead us.
