This short gothic regency romance novella was quite entertaining. I haven't read very many of these so I was interested in trying a new genre and a new author (to me).

Viscount Sterling (Randolph), a widower, is looking for a new wife. He has invited 6 eligible ladies to his home in order to see if any capture his attention. All the women are quite different, and one doe

This novella packed quite the punch. It had a great deal of information tucked into fewer pages than a normal book. However, I didn't feel as if I missed out on anything in the storyline. It felt fleshed out and complete in its story telling. I suppose that it's possible there could have been a bit more character development. Yet I didn't feel as if it took away from the story any.

A very entertaining historical romance novella - well written. Angelica and her mother have gone to a creepy, gothic style manor house to participate in a week long house party. Turns out there are 6 young ladies and their chaperones invited, a la Bachelor. A Viscount (Randolf), is searching for a new bride after his previous wife died two years ago. Are there ghosts? Is Angelica imagining the cold, strange breeze swirling about her and the glimpses of shadowy figures. What about the attractive, ...more

I thought this would be darker than it was, but it was still a good story. It was not predictable, but I could easily guess the culprit. However, I like Sophie Barns' writing style and imagination, so I was thoroughly entertained. I will definitely read more from her.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A gothic story of a woman, Angelica, who travels to Viscount Sterling’s home to be among five other candidates to be chosen to be his bride. While Angelica and Sterling do feel an attraction, there are darker forces trying to keep them apart. I received an ARC from Net Galley and the publisher for my honest review.

It’s not illogical that the result of a man discovering that his late wife was unfaithful would be for him to ensure that his next wife wouldn’t be tempted. Or in the case of Viscount Randolph Sterling’s search for a new bride, wouldn’t be tempting to others.

The problem is that his next viscountess really does need to be tempting to him.

It’s a conundrum that he intends to solve by inviting six women who are “on the shelf” to his home, with their chaperones,

At only 113 pages, I breezed right through this short novella, folks. If you pay close enough attention you will likely pick up on subtle clues that reveal the actual facts behind a certain someone’s previous death before all is confirmed. I must admit I did. The paranormal element did add an intriguing touch, btw, especially when Randolph experienced a slight dose of it himself.

3.5 / 5 stars -> rounded up because I know this genre is not typically my cup of tea and I probably have some bias.

The Secrets of Colchester Hall is a short, light novella encompassing the Regency-era romance of Lady Angelica and Viscount Sterling. The Viscount's home, Colchester Hall, is haunted by the spirit of his late wife who died under "mysterious" circumstances. Needless to say, the
I LOVED THIS! So much gothic goodness that I was actually feeling all of the shivering from the Colchester’s frosty halls.

Our dashing Viscount Sterling has been widowed for two years and is ready to dip into the debutante market. Randolph has invited six ladies to his home, but only picks the “castoffs” of the season hoping to stave off potential infidelity on his new bride’s part. We come to find out many revelations about his past bride – some tragic and some woefully wrong.

Oh how did I enjoy this novella! It was mysterious, classic, romantic and some adventure.

If you want to escape the real world for some hours and meet Viscount Stirling and his Angelica, please go grab this book - it's worth it.

From page 1 I wanted to know why Angelica got an invitation from Viscount Stirling that promises marriage at the end of two weeks. And, as Angelica is a very strong and independent woman, of course she did not want to go excpet for her mother's wishes.

I did not intend to read another Sophie Barnes book again any time soon, given my issues with her last several releases and my promise to stop faithfully reading authors in hopes they’ll be good and letting myself suffer. But The Secrets of Colchester Hall is one of those rare examples of her stepping outside her wheelhouse, and I just had to check out her take on Gothic romance,

I usually like Sophie Barnes books. The Townbridge series is one of my favorites but this story doesn't stack up to those. I found the conversations stilted and the characters unappealing. The heroine, Angelica, isn't simply awkward or plainspoken, she's really rude, tactless and gauche. Much of the time when she was speaking, I found myself wincing and thinking - Who says that? Especially to someone they like or are trying to impress? The hero, Randolph, isn't much better. Their attraction to e ...more

I enjoyed this book until the last chapter.

It’s like a “clean” the bachelor episode where a widowed Viscount invites 6 young ladies that have not had a successful season and he’s trying to find a suitable Viscountess for himself.

It was a good story and it was immediately clear who the bad guy is in this book.
The last chapter is like a whole book squeezed into one chapter, even though it’s still the same story. It’s where one of the ladies figures out the mystery, the bad guy caught and awaiting

"The Secrets of Colchester Hall" is the perfect size for a short story or novella. A story of murder, deceit, love, and a plan for a faithful marriage. I loved this historical story. It had a modern flair and loved the way that Lady Angelica was allowed to speak her mind and not be thwarted as her sisters had been.
