I chose to read and review a free digital copy of Subterfuge but that has in no way influenced my review.
Subterfuge is the first novel I have read by the team of Simkovich and Casler Bixby. It’s an intriguing story of smugglers, mafia style gangs and the police trying to stop them. When two cartels collide there is always friction and the creaky alliance made between the leader known as ‘Rabbit’ and De Vito’s gang stops this being the classic Cops vs Gangs, adding a third dimension for alliances ...more

I love the way that despite being part of a series these books work perfectly as stand alone.
A secluded Malibu beach is not where you would expect to find blue canisters bobbing about along with several bodies. But, against the odds, there is a survivor. It soon becomes clear that Tom Stone and his team are once again investigating the dark and dangerous world of drugs and human trafficking.

When you jump into the middle of a series, there's always a risk that you'll feel like you've missed some subtle references to earlier books. Not so with "Subterfuge" - despite it being the 5th book in a series. It works very well as a standalone. It is superbly written, with an incredibly gripping plot, and characters you'll either love or hate. I'm off to hunt down the previous 4 books!
