Brave new world or the same old crap?

Warlock Milo Velazquez has always dreamed of a day when “monsters” like him don’t have to hide in the shadows. Now, on a planet far from Earth, he’s hoping the old prejudices have been left behind. Though from what he’s seen so far—not a chance.

Their new leader could make life a living hell for Milo and the other immortals illegally tra

4.25 stars-DECEPTION is the second instalment in Nina Croft’s sci-fi, DARK DESIRES: ORIGINS paranormal/ fantasy romance series. This is Warlock Milo Velazquez, and Destiny’s story line. DECEPTION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. DECEPTION and the Dark Desires : Origins is a prequel series, set five hundred to a thousand years earlier, to the author’s DARK DESIRES series.

I so loved this!!! Really it was wonderfully written. I loved seeing a bit the characters from book 1 and the little Star Trek vibes were simply too great!
There is a lot of action , suspense but also a good dose of humour and it was simply the perfect mix, without forgetting the spicy/hot scenes but you could skip those if you wishes and still enjoy the book.

Milo is a great character and he sure didn't have a easy childhood but deep down he kept his own moral and is willing to fight for that. He

Having been thoroughly entertained by the original Dark Desires series that mixed sci fi with paranormal I'm truly excited to read these prequel stories that show what happened when humans fled their dying planet. Milo never wanted to travel in space or indeed the future but wakes up to find not only did his uncle put him in cryogenic sleep but he's now woken Milo up in order to find out exactly what is happening with the rest of the fleet. The humans have no idea that supernatural creatures hav ...more

It is just so damn good to see Rico Sanchez again. He was my introduction to the original series, all the way back in the original and entirely too short version of Break Out in 2011. I liked that book the first time I read it, absolutely loved it in the expanded edition in 2013, and have followed the series ever since just to follow the misadventures of this vampire in space.

Along with marveling at the whole concept of vampires in space, and wondering why

Deception is the second book in the Dark Desires Origins Series by Nina Croft. This science fiction/fantasy romance story begins as the ships have landed on a new planet. A Brave New World sort to speak. Since it still is run by humans it is still the same in many way. If you thought the politics of 2020 were scary then you will be shuddering to read that life can continue to go downhill. But yet the many quotes at the beginning of the chapters by Alexandre Dumas from The Count of Monte Cristo s ...more

Deception is an intriguing mix of steamy paranormal romance, fantasy, space adventure, and mystery that explores what makes us who we are, despite our origins or species. An interesting story, diverse and well-developed characters, suspense, steamy romance, and entertaining action scenes make this a fun read.

Warlock Milo Velazquez awakens after 500 years in cryofreeze inside a ship on a planet light-years from Earth. Will him and other immortal, supernatural beings aka “monsters” be able to live

Loved the second book in this series, though you won't need to have read the first one to follow this one. Milo wakes up to discover his "uncle" Rico abducted him and he has been in cryo sleep for 500 years and is now a long way from Earth, or would be if it still existed. Although his wand, which Rico has confiscated, he can't exact revenge so he may as well see why Rico woke him up. (If you read book one you will know that Rico is a vampire and he also "confiscated" the ship they are on and re ...more

I now understand that this book is an origin story for another series and that explains a lot. It took me a long time to get into this book and that was frustrating because I have a lot of books I want to read. I liked it and it was an interesting mix of sci-fi and paranormal. Milo is standoffish and once his history is revealed, it is understandable. Dylan is a deadly but lovable were shifter that has a playful canine personality. He is protective of the mission and Milo. Rico is the typical ru ...more

Our favourite space-faring paranormals are back!

Milo may be Capt. Rico's nephew but even he admits that Rico may have gone too far this time. Yes, it was a worthy deed to save paranormals who were at risk of being made extinct when crooked humans rigged the lottery to save themselves. As usual only the wealthy and the "useful" managed to make it onboard. But Rico did some jiggery-pokery himself and left humans behind so he could put paranormals in their place!

They already have a rocky past, they

This Author and series is new to me and having read the book I think to fully enjoy it you really need to be conversant with the world and characters ....... this book almost feels like a prequel to the ongoing series , which made reading it at times difficult .
Part of the Galaxy has been settled for several centuries by refugees from Earth - now founded on the principles of an Authoritarian Church . Although in the Trakis system the origins of humans are now the set in myths and legends - one m

This is the second in the Dark Desires Origins series. You don’t have to have read the first but I’ll bet you go back & read it. The whole series is a prequel to the Dark Desires series & I’m so glad that Rico is central to this one as he is one of my favourites from the original.
This time we get to meet Milo who is Rico’s nephew & a Warlock. He is less than happy when women to find he is 500 years from his last memory & a long way from home. Rico needs him as he is the closest he has to a human

Destiny has been raised in a lab, and only had contact with Dr. Yang, she has been kept apart from all other humans in the starship they were travelling on. Now she is awake after a long cryo sleep, and instead of being released into the sunshine of the new planet, she is been directed to a cell below. Milo didn't want to flee Earth, but Rico decided he wasn't staying on Earth. Milo is angered to realize, he left Earth and has been asleep in a cryotube all this time. Will he finally find peace a ...more

Milo Velazquez has been sent on a mission by his uncle. That is Rico, his kind of uncle. Yes that is the Rico from Dark Desires. He is now a character in Dark Desires Origins and while a side character he is still the one the plot hangs on. Milo is front and center is Deception. He needs to find out about the leader on a neighboring planet and as he looks he meets and bonds with Destiny. She has a role to play but does not know what it is. We of course know it is not something good. Great story, ...more

I was fortunate to get an ARC. As I have not read Book 1, it took a few chapters to get into this one, but once I did I could not put it down (and I am definitely getting book 1. Although this book stands alone I can't help but feel it would be richer with the addition of Book 1).

The mystery surrounding Destiny was not resolved until about 3/4 of the way through the book and looking back I could see the clues. The writing is clear and concise, the storyline holds your interest. The character de

Oh my god I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did!! This was amazing! I didn't realized this was a sequel because I enjoyed it as if it was a first book (I'm so getting the first book and reading it as soon as I can!)
This had action and mystery and romance and magic... yes!!! I liked Destiny and most of the side characters but... Milo... he's my baby. I loved him. He had the sass that I love in my characters. I adored him. Again this book was so good. I fully recommend it.

This was a wonderful story of one trying to help as it seems that the political system is broken yet again. Save yourself if your rich and can afford it! The storyline was interesting and intriguing and and the characters were developed and pulled you into this story! The characters do a great job making you feel as they felt and what they had to do! I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

This is the second book in the Dark Desires Origins series and my third read by Nina Croft. I am glad I picked up this series. It's such an interesting meshing of PNR and sci-fi with warlocks, shifters, and vampires in space. There's a bit of action, some romance, and a bad guy that needs to go down. Milo and Destiny's story can be read as a stand-alone but you would get a little more of the backstory by reading Malfunction first. ...more

This was very entertaining! It starts with action and ends with action and love. A space story with vampires, shifters and magic users, and of course the bad guy. The story is well written and keeps you interested from start to finish. I will be looking for more books like this one from Nina. I have read some of her other books and I am never disappointed.

Deception is the second book in the (Dark Desires Origins series by Nina Croft. The character development is outstanding, little bits and pieces of information arriving at odd times to form a complete picture of the characters. A captivating story with vampires, shifters, and magic that is well written and keeps you interested from start to finish.

Mixing paranormal with sci-fi? Very intriguing! Great characters and terrific story. I've already purchased Malfunction so I can go back to the beginning to find out how it all began.

Many thanks to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for providing me an arc of this e-book. My review is solely based on my opinion.

Growing up in the cold, wet, north of England, Nina Croft spent a lot of time dreaming of faraway sunnier places and ponies. When she discovered both, along with a whole load of other things, could be found between the covers of a book, her life changed forever.

Later, she headed south, picked up the perfect husband along the way, and together they volunteered to work in Africa. There they discove
