Wrapped Up in You

Rate this book
William Reid is nothing special, except for his billion-dollar acting career and his, you know, face. (Apparently, it’s a good one.) Winning ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ was nice, but this Christmas, he has more important goals in mind... like finally winning over his best friend’s little sister, the super-smart and kinda-scary Abbie Farrell.

When a blizzard leaves Will and Abbie alone at Grandma Farrell’s house (if bunking with 27 pets counts as ‘alone’), it’s the perfect opportunity to pull off a Christmas miracle. Convincing clever, frosty Abbie to give Will a chance will take more than mistletoe, but hiding his lifelong crush on her is no longer an option.

This was heavy for a novella? I feel like it would’ve worked better as an actual novel since the characters had so much history between them as well as individually.
Coming out of what seems like an emotionally abusive relationship, Abbie came with a whole load of baggage and trauma.
Will’s own past added nicely to that baggage too.

Add to that, twenty years of friendship and feelings that both didn’t acknowledge nor talk about.

I was tired okay.

And whilst it had cute moments, being in Abbie’s head felt like being stuck in a loop.
Her anxiety was exhausting, so trigger warnings for that. Since my mood was already low, this didn’t help.

I was expecting it to be more Christmassy, but that was just about present.

I don’t think I can even judge this properly, because anxiety.

But it had all the Talia Hibbert trademarks.

This Christmas season, I spent all of December - nay, all of the time since it dipped below 70 degrees - looking forward to the Big Day.

And then the very same night I arrived home for the festivites, I tested positive for COVID-19 and thereby had to spend the entirety of the Christmas-to-New-Years lineup in quarantine.

That feeling is roughly the same as how I feel being disappointed by a Talia Hibbert Christmas romance.

Romance novellas are always tough because I NEED EVERY PART. I need the getting to know the characters. I need the yearning. I need the falling. I need the drama. I need the happily ever after.

This skips the getting to know the characters in favor of yearning that is based on so much miscommunication it converted me, someone who is so anti-love that I wish every romance was 99% angst, into a miscommunication trope hater.

On top of that, the little bit of characterization we do get is inconsistent. The love interest, for example, spends first scene depicted as anxious and then later as "laid back" and "not giving a f*ck."

So do with that what you will.

Bottom line: I need a win.

It's always great to return to Talia's mind and the lovely romances she crafts, but I'm sad to say this is the first book of hers that I can't give 5 stars (and that's after reading almost her entire bibliography over the last few years). I enjoyed it, but it felt so different from her usual stories (less humor, less steam, less explanation of back story) and I think it really would have benefited a lot from being a full novel. There were so many threads we were given that were left untied and so many things that I wanted more exploration of. Like I said, I still enjoyed it and I loved Will's character SO much, but it's not the story I would recommend as an introduction to Talia's writing for anyone who's new to her work.

2020 Jingle Books Bingo (#JingleBooks🎄): Peppermint Swirl Christmas

Content Notes:

“You can’t casually date someone you’ve known forever,” she told him quickly, “someone who’s all tied up in your family—”

“I’m not trying to casually date you. I’m trying to seriously date you.”

I’m trash for childhood friends who have been in love with each other forever (but think it’s unrequited). So much delicious pining and unnecessary worrying over rejection! You get the angst without becoming too stressed.

🎄Famous ex-actor visits Scotland for Christmas with a plan to woo his childhood BFF (and the twin sister of his friend).
🐈 Pregnant cat creates mischief, panic, and very adorable kittens.
❄️ There is, unsurprisingly, a blizzard (hey, it’s a hallmark of Christmas romance novellas for a reason).
🧑🏾‍🦳 Meddling grandmother and far-too-smug brothers.
👂Excellent amount of communication and grappling with fears. Will confesses his feelings very quickly; the novella is mostly about the aftermath of that confession.

This is a Kobo exclusive (so you have to purchase the story from that retailer only). Ebook and audiobook are both available for sale.

Disclaimer: I received a free e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I cannot convey the depths of my 2021 reading slump any better than to say, I've been sitting on a new Talia Hibbert for the best part of three months. This has sucked.

But, since I am on my fourth book in 24 hours, I feel like I may be getting over it.

This was a joy, of course: hurt divorcee and sweet not-the-sharpest-knife guy who are childhood friends finally admit they're in love. No conflict, all soft (it's a short), and a thorough pleasure for when you need an emotional pick me up.

It’s Christmas in January for me!! But for real, this is an adorable novella. I loved how shy and awkward the hero is, even though he’s a famous celebrity. He is so frazzled when it comes to the heroine, his best friend and the woman he’s been in love with forever. It’s a cute friends to lovers holiday novella!

Every male character Talia Hibbert writes is how men should be IRL. Ugh. So lovely and sweet and patient and dorky. Loved it.

4/5 ⭐

This was definitely an on-the-spot read that I definitely not regret. It was very cute (and full of kittens!!)

description

It wasn't really *that* light for a short story, topic-wise, but it was a nice story nonetheless. I only wished that the ending wouldn't have been rushed.
Otherwise, this was a nice, wintery and Christmasy romance :)

Sigh. This is going to be my last read from this author. At this point, she’s plagarising herself. I started quoting the sex scene before the narrator got to it. And I was right. Word for word. Whole, repeated phrases. I shouldn’t be able to paint by numbers an author’s repetitive sex scenes. Talk about zero thrill whatsoever. It came at the end of the book and it was so dry and clinical and medicinal that it seemed like an afterthought. Also, fuck, do we have to bring the baggage into the sex scene, too?

The characterisations are annoyingly redundant, as well. Emotionally constipated women become as tiresome to read as emotionally withholding men. Flipping the script and then repeating the same rhetorical move ad nauseam is just lazy. Every single heroine in every single book of Hibbert’s is prickly. It’d be great if there was some variety offered. The heroes are all similar, too. Read a couple books of Talia’s and the others become tropey and trite.

Now onto the next issue: I am truly over the extreme level of interiority in this author’s books. There is such very little actually happening outside the characters’s heads. It’s exhausting. All the analysing, reflecting, navel gazing, remembering, mental hand wringing, debating, yearning, internal dialogue, and ruminating is exhausting. This writer needs to work on balancing her story with actual events. Move the plot along with other elements. In a ten chapter book, we spent 75% of the novella in the heads of the couple who have a hard time just saying words to other people. That’s just ridiculous.

Yeah, I’m over it.

The narrators’ accents were somewhat grating, as well.

I generally enjoy anything by Talia Hibbert (and actually downloaded the Kobo app solely in order to read this!) but I LOVED Wrapped Up in You! It features a grumpy/prickly heroine, a cinnamon roll hero, and in my opinion is a perfectly paced holiday novella. I am amazed at how she nailed all the emotional beats we needed in the story, and the ANGST! I was so here for it.

Abbie is an office manager and divorcee still healing from her last (abusive) relationship and dealing with anxiety. Will is a sexy, successful actor. But he's also Abbie's childhood best friend and long-time secret crush. But it's complicated and she has a hard time expressing her emotions or trusting people enough to really let them in. Meanwhile, Will has been in love with Abbie for years and has a plan to make her see him as more than a friend.

And this Christmas a blizzard will leave them stuck together at Abbie's grandma's house. It's so good. The longing, the banter, the angst, the festive vibes, the pro-therapy stance...I ate this up! One thing to note is that while Talia can write super steamy stories, you aren't going to get that here. There is a brief, somewhat steamy scene at the very end, but this is much more about feelings than sex.

☆ 5 / 5 ☆

“You will always be my best friend, Will Reid, before you are anything else, because I have loved you for what feels like all my life, and when I loved you first, it was for the friendship you gave me.”

This gave me all the warm feelings, made my heart so soft and my soul feel all fuzzy.

Will is a famous superhero actor and Sexiest Man Alive award winner living in California, Abbie has slowly been healing from a toxic marriage and her divorce for the last couple of years in England, and they’ve been in love since forever. Neither can imagine that the other returns their feelings to the same extent but this year Will has a plan to slowly woo Abbie over the upcoming year to make his feelings known by next Christmas.

Things obviously don’t go to plan once they meet up at Abbie’s grandma’s house in Scotland, even with perfect hot chocolate, but this Christmas miracle might be saved when they have to go on a cat rescue mission in the middle of a blizzard.

“But Grandma still smelled the same, like lily of the valley and cat biscuits and home, and Abbie’s heart settled around her.”

This novella was honestly so charming and every character felt uniquely themselves with wonderful friendships and family dynamics. Abbie’s relationship with her brothers made me smile and laugh through it all and added a good amount of levity to the story. Will has known Abbie’s family since they were children and his mother was on her own, and he has been hers and her twin brother’s best friend their whole lives. Both are scared of upsetting the balance of this friendship but it is truly this foundation that makes their romance so sweet and heartwarming.

While they’re both convinced that the other doesn’t have as deep and lingering feelings, they both know and understand each other so well. There’s just a certain intimacy you can only build through the years by learning the smallest and littlest things about each other and I loved that a lot. We see them struggle through some communication issues, because again, they’re both a little afraid of the depth of their own feelings, but they’re resolved so quickly and they constantly show the care and respect they hold for each other.

“He was making her want to feel things with her entire heart, instead of only a secret hidden part, and that wasn’t - it wasn’t right, and it wasn’t safe.”

Abbie is still healing from her last relationship and there’s a big emphasis on it and on how the process takes time. While she is slowly letting herself open herself up more to her family, she doesn’t feel ready to start a new relationship in the fear of being the one who loves too much once again. Will however is patient and understands her boundaries and needs, providing a blanket of safety and warmth.

This was honestly a perfect cozy read during the holiday season!!

I read this novella in 2.5 hrs… If you’re looking for a funny, romantic, swoon-worthy rom-com to read before the end of the year, READ THIS BOOK‼️

WILLIAM IS THE BLUEPRINT AND ABBIE IS SUCH A REAL CHARACTER, I LOVE THEM BOTH SO MUCH❤️😩

Childhood best friends-to-lovers ❤️❤️
• Reverse grumpy sunshine
• Forced proximity
• One of the cutest, sweetest, romantic book!!

The thing about me is that the childhood best friends-to-lovers trope is my FAVOURITE EVER, yet it depresses the hell out of me because I know its something I can never have 😭 Pain.

Man, I love novellas. It’s the fact that this is a dual POV book and in the very first Will-POV chapter, he’s already plotting a way to get out of the friend zone with Abbie and confess his love to her— PLSS🥹😭 Can this man get any cuter??????!!! Agh I luv him. And Abbie is the best ❤️ I was rooting for her to get vulnerable with Will, while also completely understanding & empathizing with her hesitation over it.

I can’t wait to pick up another romcom by Talia Hibbert bc damn she is good at writing them ❤️🎄

What a perfectly timed addition to my library's Recently Added section. Even better it was available for immediate reading which I did. Immediately. And in one sitting. Which was kind of a no brainer as it was a short little novella full of holiday cheer, angst, and romance.

I'll admit, this time, Hibbert's male love interest won the game. The show. My heart. A Chris Evan's-ish kind of character, William grew up next door to Abbie but upon reaching young adulthood went to Hollywood to became an actor. And he became quite successful, actually. He is a bit of a himbo and honestly that just adds to his appeal. An appeal that was already a lot considering his intense and enduring, but patient, love for Abbie.

Abbie meanwhile has been through some stuff. She's also not the biggest fan of Christmas. So when her longtime friend, who she's harboured complex but impossible feelings for, suddenly reveals all on Christmas? What's a girl to do but deny deny deny.

Anyway, I won't go into any more detail, not that it's hard to follow along where things go next, but. For such a short story, this was eMOTIONAL. There was a gorgeous scene between Abbie and her twin brother that just.. ugh, things got blurry. But also every confession, every hard-won exchange of feelings between the two leads, all the realness and trauma and patience was just.. gah.

I wish I could've had this in long novel form but even in it's shorter span it was still delightful. I do think, though, it would have a higher rating from me had some of the issues been.. well, more of an issue, to warrant the angst. Or at least had more time to breathe? I don't know quite how to describe it. But also, Will's childhood? That little bit of exposition? Oh my god, I desperately want it.

Nevertheless, Hibbert rarely stumbles and this certainly isn't one of them. Definitely a must for the season.

DOES ANYBODY JUST THINK THE HERO IS CHRIS EVANS!?!? okay anyways, fun Christmas novella featuring childhood best friends with a Hollywood twist. He's a famous actor that played captain x (ahem captain America) and comes back to the hometown for the holidays with a grand plan to seduce his childhood best friend who he's been terribly in love with ever since he was young. Despite her being recently divorced to a man she's been married to 5 years, before and after the time, he still never confessed his feelings towards her even though he's been in love with her for so so so so long. The girl is scared because these are very new emotions to her and she's reluctant to give a piece of herself to him after the train wreck that happened with her last relationship. Overall, it's a good story but I found myself getting caught up with the writing style and I found myself loving our hero more than the heroine because he wore his heart on his sleeve.

I really loved this story! Abbie’s fears and worries felt so real. I’m sure so many people could at least partially relate. Will was my favourite! He was so awkward and sweet but fiercely loving and loyal.

Abbie and Will’s relationship felt real. Of course it was going to be a little awkward at first; they were both trying not to show the other how they truly felt. But once they stopped trying to hide and really let themselves feel, the chemistry was there and intense!
Also, when they bantered, it did feel like they were a couple of friends, joking.

I did catch myself grinning and laughing as I read the inner monologues. Will’s in particular, I found so adorably funny.

The ONLY reason I'm not giving this story 5 stars is for a few grammatical errors. Other than that, I would say this has got to be one of my favourite shorts!

As this is my first Talia Hibbert, I hope this book is not a reflection to the rest of her works. Especially how hyped they were.

Let's just say I'm bored and nothing about the plot excites me. I have read a similar plot in a different book recently that 100% did it better than this.

Went into this book with high expectations as it is by Talia Hibbert and I was definitely not disappointed. Her writing style is perfect for me, and yes this is my first Christmas read ever. I loved all of the characters so much. Please make sure to check trigger warnings though, which Talia states at the start of the book.
