The Knight's Falconess

Rate this book
The South-West of England in the late Fourteenth Century. Zelda, daughter of a falconer in the service of Sir Hugh, suspects that the lord of the manor is attracted to her. At home, she is being pressed to accept the attentions of Matthew, an apprentice mason.
When Zelda’s ill-judged scheme to seduce Hugh goes disastrously wrong, she fears herself out of favour. But the incident leaves Hugh with the burgeoning sense that he has an alternative to his loveless engagement to the refined Lady Rosalind. He pursues his falconer’s daughter, not foreseeing the consequences of his actions.
Their dalliance becomes complicated by Zelda’s realisation that she is expecting Hugh’s child. The involvement of Hugh’s son Arthur and his companion, the young nobleman, Guy, only serves to muddle matters further.
Zelda’s ambition to become a falconess is eclipsed by her desire to be a mother to Hugh’s child. But the impetuous Rosalind has other ideas. Can Zelda escape the fate that the noblewoman plans for her? Will she ever truly possess her Knight?

I'm a writer of women's fiction and contemporary and historical romantic fiction. My longer works have been described as accessible character fiction, humour often being an important ingredient.

My seven short historical romances are available in the anthology, 'Collected Romances,' in digital and print format.

My books are available digitally from Amazon, Smashwords and their retailers (B&N, Apple, Kobo, etc). Some are also available in print and as audiobooks on Google Play.

My latest publication, 'The Knight's Falconess,' is a sensual romance set in Medieval England.

For tasters of my contemporary writing, five short stories are available to download free from Smashwords and their retailers, and four of these are available as audiobooks on Google Play.

I'd like to say a big thank you to the many readers and reviewers at Goodreads, who have taken time and care over reading, rating, reviewing and recommending my fiction. I really value feedback from readers so, if you have any comments to make on my books, please let me know.

Where to begin...
It started off well enough and I enjoyed feisty and mouthy Griselda, the scenes with Hugh were steamy, but then Grizelda made one dumb decision after another turning into this cowed and naive girl, then back into "the falconess" who can take care of herself and can forget about her stolen baby by bonding with a new falcon?! 🤯

I found the characters to be inconsistent. Sir Hugh doesn't seem to be a horrible human being on the first glance, but he is and I cannot root for a character like this. Lying, denying her and the child he fathered and just plainly toying with her and leaving her with his wife who's locking her up and stealing her child?!

There are only so many bad decisions I can handle in a book.
On a positive note, the writing was well done and the original idea was great.
Altogether not my cup of tea.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Knight’s Falconess was a gripping story, one that had me a bit conflicted about my rating. On the one hand, there was plenty packed into this story and it looked at things that are sometimes overlooked in these types of stories. On the other hand, I never quite believed in the romance between the characters. The fact the romance never quite won me over is the reason I rounded my rating down.

Although I was never quite convinced by the romance between the characters, I could not get enough of the story. Once I started reading, I could not put it down. I needed to see how each element played out, how all the details came together, and gladly devoured it in a single sitting to get my answers. It takes some expected details for this kind of story and twists them to turn the focus elsewhere, giving the reader what they expect from a medieval romance whilst providing them with something that will leave them guessing.

All in all, The Knight’s Falconess was an addictive read.

Good story, but strange character personalities

I enjoyed this book, the writing was wonderful in its descriptions and design. I just wish Zelda and Hugh were fleshed out a bit more so their sudden personality changes throughout the novel would make more sense to me.

it Gets Better

About a third of the way through, I was ready to abandon this book in disgust. I didn’t like any of the principal characters and nothing the least bit unpredictable seemed likely to happen. I stuck with it. The action improved, the characters had unforeseen depths, and it turned out to be a satisfying story. It does need an editor to sort out when to use he/she and when to use him/her.
