I loved Constantina's other book Hydranos and when she asked me if I was interested in reading her short story, I was immediately interested.
I have huge respect for anyone who is able to write a whole story in a short format.
The story had me hooked from the first page. I was interested in the concept of "emotional usurpation".
Other times, freedom was too heavy to digest...
The story starts with Jade living her punishment and we go back to see how she got there. And I have to say, I want more! This absolutely works as a stand-alone but at the same, the world created here is awesome enough to hold a whole novel.

Αυτό το διήγημα είναι όλο κι όλο δεκατρείς σελίδες, γραμμένο στην αγγλική γλώσσα. Ο μοναδικός λόγος που το αγόρασα είναι για να δοκιμάζω τον λογαριασμό που άνοιξα στο amazon και να δω πως δουλεύει η εφαρμογή για τα kindle books. Την συγκεκριμένη συγγραφέα την ακολουθώ στο instagram (bookstagram) γιατί μου αρέσει η αισθητική της και φαίνεται ευγενικός άνθρωπος. Δεν την γνωρίζω προσωπικά, ούτε την αντιπαθώ, ούτε την συμπαθώ, ούτε της έχω καμία υποχρέωση. Γενικότερα υπάρχει μια καχυποψία και μία επιφυλακτικότητα για όλους εκείνους που γράφουν αλλά δεν χρησιμοποιούν τα παραδοσιακά κανάλια προώθησης και διάθεσης των έργων τους (εκδοτικούς οίκους, βιβλιοπωλεία κτλ) πως είναι ερασιτέχνες και κολλιτσίδες και διάφορα άλλα ρατσιστικά, πλέον δεν με ενδιαφέρουν αυτοί οι διαχωρισμοί και οι κατηγοριοποιήσεις, αν μου αρέσει μια ιστορία, μου αρέσει, ακόμα κι αν είναι γραμμένη από τον περιπτερά μου επάνω σε ένα άδειο πακέτο από Santé άφιλτρα.
Η ιστορία της YT-79604 είναι θεματικά ένας φιλοσοφικός μύθος και αισθητικά αποτελεί ένα κομψό μείγμα από δύο στοιχεία που κανονικά η συνύπαρξ�� τους συνιστά ένα είδος αντίθεσης:
- συναισθηματική ένταση - φόρτιση
- μινιμαλισμός - λιτότητα
Αυτή η ιστορία διαπραγματεύεται ένα ζήτημα πολυσυζητημένο που αφορά το ερώτημα του τι είναι αυτό που μας κάνει ανθρώπους και ειδικότερα την ιδιότητα ή ικανότητα της ενσυναίσθησης, δηλαδή το να συμπάσχουμε και να ταυτιζόμαστε με τα συναισθήματα του άλλου. Επειδή τυχαίνει να κάνω ένα επάγγελμα στο οποίο ο βαθμός της ενσυναίσθησής μου μετράει στην αξιολόγησή μου, κατανοώ τη σημασία της αλλά και την ανάγκη της ύπαρξης μιας ισορροπίας, διαφορετικά πολύ εύκολα μπορεί κάποιος να καταλήξει να κουβαλάει περισσότερα από αυτά που μπορεί να σηκώσει.
Η συγγραφέας μας επιτρέπει μόνο μερικές αποσπασματικές ματιές σε ένα φανταστικό σύμπαν για το οποίο μας δίνονται ελάχιστες πληροφορίες. Είναι ένας κόσμος, όχι σφαιρικός, όπως η γη που κατοικούμε, αλλά ένας Κύβος. Αυτό μπορεί να έχει μεταφορική ή κυριολεκτική διάσταση, αλλά οπωσδήποτε συνιστά έναν συμβολισμό, της ψυχρής, τετράγωνης λογικής η οποία απαγορεύει κάθε είδους συναισθηματικής έκφρασης. Η επαρχία στην οποία ανήκει η ηρωίδα είναι ένα από τα Τετράγωνα που απαρτίζουν τον παγωμένο κόσμο της, έναν κόσμο όπου χιονίζει την άνοιξη και όπου η τάξη και η ευνομία διασφαλίζεται από το Υπουργείο συναισθηματικής Πρόνοιας το οποίο ελέγχει τα Εργοστάσια Κλωστοϋφαντουργίας. Οι συγκεκριμένες κλωστές είναι μηχανισμοί (ένα είδος σφιγκτήρα) που ανάλογα με το χρώμα και το πλήθος τους, εφαρμόζονται επάνω στα δάχτυλα των ανθρώπων και συμβολίζουν μια επιβράβευση ή μια τιμωρία.
Για παράδειγμα η YT (yellow thread - κίτρινη κλωστή)-79604 είναι φυλακισμένη με 25ετή κάθειρξη και υπόκειται στην καταναγκαστική εργασία της υποχρεωτικής ανάγνωσης βιβλίων, με δυνατότητα μείωσης της ποινής για τις φορές που επιλέγει να παραλείψει ένα γεύμα, η πείνα είναι ένα είδος επιλεκτικής αυτοτιμωρίας που επιβραβεύεται με αυτόν τον τρόπο.
Το ενδιαφέρον είναι πως η φυλακή στην οποία κρατείται η ηρωίδα είναι ο ίδιος χώρος που προηγουμένως εργαζόταν πριν την σύλληψή της, μια πανάρχαια Βιβλιοθήκη. Τότε όλοι την γνώριζαν με το όνομα Jade (το όνομά της σημαίνει νεφρίτης ή γιαδείτης, πολύτιμος λίθος). Σε ένα σύμπαν όπου οι κακοποιητικές, κοινωνιοπαθείς συμπεριφορές αποτελούν το αποτέλεσμα μιας κοινωνίας όπου επιβάλλει την συναισθηματική αποστασιοποίηση, η Jade πάσχει από ανίατη ανθρωπιά. Κανείς δεν το ξέρει και η ίδια έχει τον απαραίτητο αυτοέλεγχο ώστε να συμμορφώνεται. Ένας άνθρωπος γνωρίζει την αδυναμία της, ο αδελφοποιτός, της αλλά κι αυτός έχει απομακρυνθεί, οπότε δεν κινδυνεύει ή έτσι νομίζει.
Δεν ήξερα πόσο πολύ χρειαζόμουν αυτήν την ιστορία, μέχρι που τη διάβασα. Η Maud δίνει την δική της εκδοχή για το πως λειτουργούν οι έννοιες του δεσμού και του δεσμώτη.
Εφαρμόζω την κοινωνική αποστασιοποίηση για λόγους υγείας κι επειδή δεν υπάρχει η ανάγκη να βγω από το σπίτι για επαγγελματικούς λόγους καθώς η εταιρία μου λειτουργεί - προσωρινά - με τηλεργασία, πλέον βγαίνω ελάχιστα και έχω αρχίσει να αναπτύσσω ανθρωποφοβικές τάσεις. Κοντά σε αυτό, νομίζω πως περνάω πολύ περισσότερο χρόνο πλέον σε ένα σύμπαν που υπάρχει μόνο μέσα στο μυαλό μου από όσο θα έπρεπε. Ο έξω κόσμος μου φαίνεται πλέον ξένος, επικίνδυνος και εχθρικός, η παραμονή μου σε αυτόν μου δημιουργεί (ελαφρώς) αγοραφοβικές τάσεις.

I so very much enjoyed the intriguing and thought-provoking story of Jade’s life. As her name suggests she is disreputable, and being disreputable in a dystopian community means courage. The courage to feel and commit a crime that no one has ever committed. A crime that even the lawmakers couldn’t think of a punishment for.
25 years of obligatory book reading is going to be her punishment (meanwhile I was thinking about Chekhov’s the bet story). And her struggle for reducing her life sentence by reading more books and omitting meals reminded me of the 1917 movie when Schofield shares the story of swapping his medal:
“Some instants were like that one when I could afford opting for freedom in this tag-of-war. Other times, freedom was too heavy to digest and the dried sprouts of standard lunch were all I wanted to eat.”
“LCpl Schofield: I swapped it with a French captain.
LCpl Blake: You swapped it? For what?
LCpl Schofield: Bottle of wine.
LCpl Blake: What did you do that for?
LCpl Schofield: I was thirsty.
LCpl Blake: What a waste. You should’ve taken it home with you. You should’ve given it to your family. Men have died for that.
LCpl Blake: If I got a medal, I’d take it back home. Why didn’t you just take it home with you?
LCpl Schofield: Look, it’s just a bit of bloody tin. It doesn’t make you special. It doesn’t make any difference to anyone.”

This is so small and yet so packed with discussions on empathy, imprisonment, puppet worlds and daring to feel! It is better to go in blind, but it is honestly a wonderful story about defining freedom, empathy and manipulation.

Oh, wow! I really loved this short story. Jade has a punishment to sit out, twenty five years of obligatory book reading, for showing empathy. It's set in a dystopian world and I wish I could read more about it. It is well written, like the authors first book Hydranos, both worth checking out. Definitely recommended as a thought provoking quick read that's finished over a cup of tea.

"I was free to forgive, to feel for anyone as much as I wanted."
I received this short story in exchange for a honest review.
Constantina's unique writing style always makes her stories stand out. The language was rich in images and I liked the topics - empathy and the value of freedom - it dealt with.
The beginning of YT-79605 was confusing but very intriguing. It starts with Jade being tied to a book cart. Slowly it is revealed how she ended up in this situation. I'd love to say more about the plot but since I don't want to spoiler I can only recommend you to read it yourself:)
I was amazed by Constantina's ability to reduce the story to these few pages while still giving the reader a good insight and she even managed to include authentic character development.
All in all I enjoyed reading YT-79605 very much and would recommend it to everyone who likes dystopian stories.

HOLY WOW. I am writing this as I just finished this amazing short story, and I am honestly shocked at how pulled in I was in these few pages. Maud has crafted a masterpiece, a world that I feel like I could read an entire series so quickly and efficiently, and my only reaction is that I want more. The writing was beautiful, the characters were so interesting, and like I said before, this world pulls you in just like Maud's other book Hydranos. There is little humor but you will definitely get hit in the feels while reading!
If you have a chance to read this, you 100% should, and be prepared to want more!
