Charlie eats lots of barley and wheat and corn. He has BIG feet, a BIG mouth, and a BIG belly. In fact, there's only one thing bigger than Charlie Chick. . . . Join the fun in this great big book featuring enormous pop-ups on every spread, a sound chip, and a HUGE surprise at the end.
Nick Denchfield is a paper engineer whose books including a pop-up-and-play theater version of The Gruffalo, and Campbell's The Christmas Treasure Hunt. He and Ant Parker previously collaborated on several other Charlie Chick titles.
Was anyone else completely surprised when this book didn't rhyme? It's all set up so you expect it and then...it doesn't. Odd. My husband was coming up with better couplets to finish the lines as I was reading it aloud for practice. Love the pop-ups of Charlie's body. Very well done.
The kids love this one. The pop-ups are silly, like Charlie's gigantic feet. I do occasionally have reservations about this one because of the "Charlie eats a lot, that's why he has such a big fat tummy" spread, but overall Charlie has big body parts because he eats healthy and is growing, so I don't think having a big fat tummy is meant to be read as a bad thing, and it isn't. It's just a bit awkward sometimes, inciting children to laugh at someone's big fat tummy. Maybe I'll feel better if I start trying to see it as using fat as a positive or neutral descriptor.
Hey, didn't this used to be titled Charlie the Chicken? Why, yes. The sadly out-of-print Charlie has gotten a reissue with a new title and a bigger format. Now, he's even bigger than ever. I love this book! The sound chip in Charlie's tummy on the front cover is a little gimmicky, though. So, skip buying a used copy of this pop-up on Amazon.com for $50+ and buy the new version.
My 5 month old son loves this pop-up book, he squeals with delight every time I turn to the pop-up page. Simple words, nice illustration, fun pop-ups, and short enough to suit a child's attention span.
