Born and raised in sunny South Africa, my travels took me firstly to England and then to New Zealand, where I settled for 10 years. Upon return to England with my husband and two boisterous sons, I left the corporate world behind and took on the new adventure of being a stay-at-home mum. It was during this time, at the age of 37, that I summoned the courage to do what I have loved to do since teenagehood – to write, to bring the characters in my head to life in the form of a first novel, which I had started 10 years ago but never finished.

In my spare time, I love to bake for my family, read, and of course, submerge myself in the creative pool of bringing characters to life and threading narratives together.

**I was provided with an ARC for an honest review**

me: ugh I hate cliches
author: uses the title in the book
also me: *sobs* they used the title in the book

description

Our heroine Cassidy Knite

At first she seemed like a kinda basic bitch, the virgin college student lost parents kinda character.

Okay and ?

But then there was ✨this switch ✨ moment that activated brat mode — so she started making some wild ass decisions that was very different from the inital shy wallflower we meet

“ I had a run-in with Roxy”

AHHAHAH THATS A FUCKING MILD WAY TO PUT IT LMAO

She has her own goals of wanting to be a journalist at the The New York Artefact. That she not gonna let anyone ^especially miss Roxy fuck em up^. She has her values. That she not gonna let her own hot boss ruin them. She just might push the limits a little for some fun *wink*

And now the love interest, Harly I mean Mr. Ashbey
description

That obsessive territorial asshole ♥️

“I’ve been patient for almost two months, but I’m done. Whatever the risk of rejection or ramifications of her being my internship, I don’t care.
But when I reach her desk, she’s gone, and it will be days before she returns.
Fuck”

His love language is words of affirmation and aint nobody gonna convince me otherwise

At first he seemed just like a workaholic where his alphaness was described and it wasn’t till later we learned more about his character and actually SAW that dominant shit in action. He was developed. He had an inner darkness that kept me desperately flipping pages to understand what caused him to be the man he is now.

But he also had moments being a sweetheart who just trying to figure shit out,

“Okay, now I’m confused. What happened between her moaning my name in ecstasy to now?”

Was some of the fucking realest funniest shit I have read in a whileeee because yes girls be complicated and sometimes our brain goes a mile a minute

But now I gotta say it. What the actual FUCk was that vacation scene. I mean it was a goddamn flight. What possible work situation is so drastic but then is lowkey solved during the trip back via video chat. Like what. Where is my damn bikini makeout scene?

AND THEN HOURS AFTER LEAVING A BEAUTIFUL GETAWAY

AFTER HOURS OF TRAVELING

for that SpOiLeR.

It was romantic as paperwork.

description

It was just such a random hiccup that I guess was needed to further our plot. I also hadn’t realized the length of this book, it aint a romance that ends at the courtship.

Oh nooooo honey, it goes into all the nitty gritty relationship shit that has some of the best orgasms, I mean highs. And some of the lowest lows.

We all have a fight or flight response

And Cassie is *heavily* on the flight response

description

Now the secondary characters,

I was pleasantly surprised by the friendship written. Usually, the obligatory book friendship is surface deep, limited to just info-dumping and brainstorming of sex positions (tell me i’m wrong)

But Emy was adorable! She schemes and plans with Harly and helps make shit special for Cassy

“Emy leans forward and whispers to Harly, “That bitch told us to shop in the cheap stores like we can’t afford things in here.”

This is absolutely something my BFF mischievously planned a surprise with my BF and seeing it in a book made me heart go ekkkkk.

I loved how Emy constantly told it is! I mean its so true that friends won’t support all your decisions. But they WILL love you and help you through them. For some reason this seemed to surprise Cassie at first... but later Cassie thanked her lucky stars to have such a real friend

Some of the other characters you meet and thought they were gonna be limited to that chapter but still had some tricks up their sleeve later in the book with Brighton, Whitney, Declan, Katherine, and Sandton

When I found out the moms name is Alexa

I fucking lost it.

Alexa, play Go Fuck Yourself

Writing style
This writer did a pretty great job balancing the action with the worldbulding while introducing its characters. Certain writing choices of the dreams and flashbacks were a little disorientating in what was actually happening in the plot. Some moments were drawn out and you were like. Why. But later revelations made some details make wayyy more sense

description

Side note, I kinda loved the symbols that indicated a POV switch. Honestly with the symbol I could’ve done without the additional name tag at the beginning of each chapter. The butterfly symbol was adorable and I loved how it appeared in the storyline itself. I sorta highlighted how that image was carefully matched to her personality! But it also showed how wrong Harly’s symbol was....

I mean at no point was baseball ever really associated with his character. It was mentioned once in ch 24 that Harly likes the Yankees... bruh. Like it should’ve been a briefcase or boxing gloves to make more sense with his character.

Overall, this was a fun romance with the taboo boss-intern dynamic that was made all the more spicey with the life chaos surrounding these characters as they struggle to be together with all their friends and family drama pulling them away from each other. While the beginning romance was a little basic recipe, all the twists and turns of the plot after the couple was together worked to elevate this whole book to enjoy reading about the couple BEING in a relationship, not just a beginning courtship.

"It's been said when lightening strikes it's a phenomenon. Well, this woman, she's my lightening."

They shouldn't work. He's rich and comes from a family and a society built on prestige and status and wealth. She's an orphan, raised in foster care, working her tail off to make her dreams come true and fulfill the wishes of her deceased parents.

"Her innocence is endearing, and my compulsive need to protect her overtakes any disapproving voices in my head."

He's much older than her and he's her boss. If you think that sounds hard to overcome, you won't be able to imagine what life has in store for Cassy and Harly.

It ends with a cliffy so be ready. Book 2 hurts in the best way.

The Power of Us is the first book in the Us Duology series written by author Skylar Shoar. This is the author’s debut novel, and it tells the story of Cassidy Knite and Harley Ashbey. Cassidy’s parents passed away when she was eleven years old, and since she didn’t have any living relatives, she went to live in foster care. Cassy worked very hard in school and was accepted to Columbia University.

Cassy’s dream is to be a journalist at The New York Artefact. So, when an opportunity came up to win an internship at the Artefact, Cassy was hopeful for the opportunity. She was very excited when she heard she earned one of the positions. Unfortunately, her rival Roxy won the other one.

Harley Ashbey is the publisher of The New York Artefact. His father used to be the publisher before he retired, and Harley worked hard to earn the right to take over. He has always been a workaholic, that is until he meets Cassy.

Harley and Cassy fall fast and hard for each other, but they face many obstacles. Can their love for each other be enough, or will they be torn apart by those against their relationship?

Harly, Harly, Harly....oh, how I love that man!

This is a perfect first book. The problems are real, the drama is real. Everything about this book is so real.

Well, unless I can snag a hot, rich guy like Mr. Ashbey, then almost everything will be real :D

On a serious note, this was a lovely read. It hit all my sweet spots: a soft, cinnamon roll hero with a hard exterior, an age gap romance, a fast-moving relationship and first loves that last forever.

My heart.

Why are fictional men the best men to exist? :(

This book is amazing and wonderful. Great work, Ms. Shoar!

I was asked to read this book in exchange for an honest review. I rated this as 4* with the main reason being how realistic so many of the situations were!

Oftentimes you read books where the larger situations are made up of smaller, very cliche situations. Whilst this book obviously had some due to the trope, there were parts which I found very refreshing.

For example, Cassy and Roxy are both interns and in terms of their actual work, it mentions that both of them are very talented. However, in most books, Cassy would often be perceived as the better of the two and someone who would make suggestions for a work crisis that would outdo those of people who already work there properly. Whereas in this, that situation didn't occur and similarly, she actually got on with her females coworkers, instead of instantly disliking them because they were constantly going after Harly.

Another thing i liked was that although she ended up sleeping with Harly before being married, he didn't push her into it. Again, many times when I've read this scenario, although the guy usually claims to accept this he still keeps making advances that push for the girl to give in.

The reasons i didn't give this 5* were because at some points I did find Cassy a little too quick off the mark when she was getting annoyed. I get that she's only young and definitely insecure given the difference in status, but it would have been nice to see her have a bit more of a backbone in some situations without running off and lashing out.

With Harly, given he was almost 30, I would've thought he wouldn't have used his fists as much as he did thoughout, but i do understand his reasoning even if it was a little rash. However it was nice to see a male lead who wasn't described as the perfect guy, who has slept with almost every woman on earth and gets everything he wants 24/7. One thing that i felt needed more depth though was his 'darker' side. Although the fighting seems to allude to it, i don't feel it properly explained it. Neither did Emy and Declan's warnings of him being a bit too possessive... I personally didn't feel like he was being excessively controlling in general, and not enough for them to get that impression, when initially Emy seemed to be a big fan.

Another reason I didn't give 5* is because this was a book that i would say is quite slow burn. Whilst that didn't detract from the storyline, i do usually prefer to read books which are a bit of a faster burn. Would definitely say this is quite a sweet romance between the pair though when they are together.

It would be nice to learn more about Brighton as i feel like there's more to that story. I also want to see more of Whitney as i liked her character. She seemed down to earth and very much a loyal friend to both Harly and Cassy. It was nice to see her build a good relationship with Cassy immediately once they met. Looking forward to reading the 2nd book in this duet and hopefully these will be somewhat answered.

A contemporary romance, with a story told from two different perspectives. The reader is invited to discover the ups and downs of a love-based relationship, not only through the eyes of the female character but also through the ones of her partner. Emotional struggles define the journey this new couple will undertake, with the ultimate question standing in the air: will love prevail?

Triggers: profanity, mature scenes, and violence.

Story:

Meet Cassidy, a journalism student with a troubled past and a naïve view of the world. Her biggest dream is to become a reporter at one of the most successful newspapers in the world, so she can make her father proud.

Harly Ashbey is a successful publisher, who runs The Artefact, the newspaper Cassidy dreams of working at. Faith brings the two of them together, and there is no denying how attracted they are to each other. However, just like Cassidy, Harly too battles a troubled past, with the voice of guilt constantly reminding him of the things he stands to lose.

A turbulent journey of love begins, fueled by Cassidy’s desire to have someone who cares for her and Harly’s inability to stay away from the girl she considers to be perfect. A rollercoaster of events will follow, culminating with the day that should have been the happiest of their lives. A scandal, a piece of news to forever change their perspective… will their love be powerful enough? You will have to read the book to find out.

My opinion:

I found the book to be a comfortable read, with relatable characters, who struggle to define their emotional self and free themselves from other people’s expectations. As the story progressed, I could not help but hope their relationship will reach the point of forever and forever. After all, don’t we all love a happy ending?

It was interesting to see how much Cassidy and Harly fight not to let their past haunt them. They want to be together, regardless of the circumstances, and their story is wonderfully contoured by secondary characters. The themes of the book move from love and friendship to honesty and loyalty, and it is practically impossible not to enjoy the emotional rollercoaster gaining speed with every page turned.

Verdict:

The debut novel of Skylar Shoar is a delicately-woven contemporary romance, with unexpected plot twists and a breathtaking connection between characters. A story piece together without flaws, a love-based relationship that will leave you wanting for more, a passionate dive into the world of emotions… a real page turner!

This book follows the story and viewpoint of Cassidy, a college student, with aspirations of working at The Artefact - New York’s most successful newspaper, as well the story and viewpoint of Harly Ashbey, publisher of The Artefact. A chance opportunity brings them working together, attraction folllows, as well as many challenges as they navigate the tricky waters of a relationship. From friendships being put to the test, trust being evaluated, and a cliffhanger that will leave you wondering... can everything last forever?

Overall, this was a great book to read. I loved the level of detail that the author goes through to understand Cassidy and Harly’s thoughts as we learn about their lives. The trials and tribulations in their relationship were, for the most part, pretty relatable. At times, their level of romance seemed a little far fetched, and personally, left me rolling my eyes, but other moments were far more realistic. Also, Cassidy seems extremely mature for 19 years old (she has had a traumatic childhood through.)
All of the characters are fantastically written, and I could compare them to people I’ve encountered in my own real life - which really helped me enjoy the story even more.

There were moments I felt their pain in situations, and when an author can write like that and make me feel the way the characters do, I consider that fantastic writing.

The book is pretty long, with some chapters kind of unnecessary, but the story did still flow well. The cliffhanger has left me ready to start the 2nd book as soon as I can! (I have another obligation first, but it WILL be read in February!)

If you’re looking for a steamy, romance book, with a wonderful writing style, this book is worth the read!

We had the privilege of being sent this duology by Skylar to review and I'm very please that she picked us to send them to, as I thoroughly enjoyed this first part of the duology taking me on an emotional roller-coaster throughout this book even making me cry.

Cassidy has a hard life growing up and goes on to pursue her dream of becoming a journalist. On her route to obtaining that dream job she meets a handsome and rich Harly Ashby .

Packed full of drama, emotional twists and turns Harly and Cassidy become embroiled in a love story. Both Cassidy and Harly become very passionate for each other leading to many very hot sex scenes.

The book is very long for a first release, in some places of the book I felt that some parts were a little over explained and could of been cut. other than that I think this book was a really good read and keeps you on your toes throughout.

Book 2 The Perseverance of us by Skylar Shoar

Where do I start with this book took me on a complete emotional ride I had to try and read through wiping my tears from my eyes. Again I enjoyed reading this book but I feel it could have been cut down a little and was slightly over explained in parts which to spoilt it a little. Don’t get me wrong that doesn’t take anything away from the writing of these books and they are great reads.

Cass and the love of her life Harly finally feel like they can settle down and actually settle into a life with one another but life has other things planned with trials and tribulations at every turn they have to fight for not only their marriage but life itself.

The duology was a great read and I’m looking forward to what what comes next from this author.

Thank you Skylar Shoar for the copy of The Power of Us to read and review. Following is my honest review.

The Power of Us is a hardcore romance between Cassidy & Harly. He is in his late twenties, wealthy, and runs a large company. She is an eighteen-year-old college student interning at his company. This is a situation itching for some romance, right?

Romance it is. They have it bad for each other & before you know it they are living together. That leads to many misunderstandings & compromises as they learn about each other. One area they have no problem with is their sex life. Whoo we momma, there is a lot of it in this book.

The Power of Us did have lots of sex in it but there was also a multitude of issues they had to deal with, including breast cancer. There are family issues. Cassidy is an orphan, Harly’s family is high falooting, and there is an age gap between the two of them. I was happy to see these realistic problems mixed into the romance.

💖I am typically not a romance reader. Every now & then one strikes my interest. I am glad I snatched this one up. I was enthralled with the characters as they had that fictional love about them. The kind that always stays at the initial romance stage, an infatuation that never goes away. Their relationship was fun to read about and every time they hit a snag, I was excited to find out what would happen. If you like a hot & heavy romance that also deals with real-life problems, this is a book for you! Read more reviews at latishaslowkeylife.com.

I very nearly read this book straight through without stopping. It totally captured me. Cassidy and Harly’s story is intriguing. The twists and turns are quick and surprising at times. Both characters are likable. I found myself frustrated with Cassidy’s impulsive behavior from time-to-time, but then I remembered her age (she’s young) and how her childhood experiences formed her, and I slowly came to understand her motivations. At a very young age she suffered a tremendous loss that leaves her a bit fragile.

Harly is a man driven by success and family obligations, but when he sees Cassidy for the first time he realizes he wants more for himself. His overprotectiveness of Cassidy, even though totally warranted, challenges his temper often. It was interesting to see how he learned to control himself when faced with self doubt and jealousy. He’s likable, good hearted, fair and loyal, but he’s also inexperienced with love and relationships.

Together they create a love story full of passion and desire with their innate need for one another always at the epicenter of their relationship. They have struggles, serious challenges, and roadblocks coming at them full force, but their love and commitment never waivers.

This book is part of a duet and to get to the end of their story you’ll need to read both books in order. It’s totally worth it.

“The Power of Us” is a mature, steamy, new adult romance by Skylar Shoar, the first of a duology. Cassidy Knite is in her first year of college, she’s super naive, and she just wants to succeed as a journalist. Harly Ashbey is a successful publicist, and he basically lives at his desk. When the unlikely duo meets, the connection-and attraction-is instantaneous. But for Cassy and Harly, the decision to be together will not be easy, for there are many obstacles that lie in their path. Will true love conquer all? Or are some things just not meant to be…

Wow!!! I don’t know what I was expecting when I picked this book up, but that’s definitely not it!! And trust me, that is a good thing. Cassy and Harly’s story is deeply emotional, incredibly heartfelt, and so very genuine. I can truly believe that these two are soulmates, despite all the difficulties. This book has the ReadsBySarita stamp of approval for sure. I can’t wait to see how it all ends in book 2!

I understand that this is Skylar Shoar's first outing as an author, and I am so pleased that she decided to take the plunge. The Power of Us is so much more than a romance, Cassy and Harly's story is a journey and with any journey, the track is very rarely straight, and that is what makes this story such an absorbing and powerful read. I felt many emotions as page after page I was drawn into an abundance of emotions from heartbreak, to tears to joy but ultimately it always came back to love. The initial high I felt after this couple's struggle's with family and outside influences had been resolved soon turned to shock as we came to the end of the book.

This is one book that you will find hard to put down. The conclusion to Cassy and Harly's story The Perseverance of Us is out now!

The Power of Us by Skylar Shoar is an enthralling romance novel which tells us about the story of Cassidy, a girl who had lost both her parents when she was young but despite that she had worked hard to study at Columbia University, and Harly Ashbey, the son of Hillden Ashbey and head at Artefact.

Cassidy and Harly both have pasts that have prevented them from being overly attached to anyone but when their eyes meet in the class for the first time, something changes in them. When one thing leads to another, they decide to get married just after a very little while of dating. In the little time, Cassidy is exposed to the lavish life that Harly leads while Harly gets to know the issues Cassidy faces. Would love be enough to suffice the external forces forcing them apart? Would they get their happily ever after?
January 17, 2021
This was the most emotional read ever ❤️

The story between Cassidy and Harly is emotional roller coaster from the start. Cassidy is a journalist student and from the moment she lays eyes on Harly there is a spark, a connection that they both feel. Once she gets accepted into internship at his company their chemistry grows and along the way they have many obstacles and challenges to face. Their love is so strong that even Harly’s mother can’t push Cassidy away. After short time into their relationship they get engaged and married soon after that. But what soposed to be the greatest day of their life the news that Cassidy received is anything but.

If you haven’t read this I recommend you add it to your list because this story will sweep you away and ride you through emotions you never expected

Fantastic debut. This book is a contemporary romance novel with a lot of twists and turns. We are introduced to rich tycoon Harly Ashbey and student Cassy Knite, whose paths cross in an unexpected way. From the first time their eyes met they both know they are soulmates and no one else would ever do. But their relationship isn't without trials and tribulations and events along the way jeopardize their love.

This was a great read, and I found myself loving the characters that Shoar has created. She has a great way of writing that is both emotive and addictive and readers will be sucked into the book, and following the journey with these characters. The book ends on a cliffhanger which leads readers to know what happens in the sequel.

Wow...That’s all I can say.

This is one of the best books I’ve read by far. You feel everything that our characters Cassidy and Harly are feeling. Plot twists you will never see coming. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a next book HUSBAND. Yup, I said husband because trust me as much as you would want a book boyfriend, Mr. Harley Ashbey goes beyong that. The connection you feel between the two characters is breathtaking. This book is 100% going to leave you on a book hangover. I just finished and I want to go back to the beginning and re-read it for the first time! I wish I could give this book a 10/5⭐️

Add this to your TBR list. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I couldn't put it down! All the characters are brought to life by the author's amazing way of making these complex characters relatable, and you can't help but cheer them on through all the ups and downs. Both Cassy and Harly have a past they're haunted by, and yet these difficulties bring them closer together despite outside forces working (overtime) against them.

The themes in this story- loyalty, love, friendship, and honesty are delicately woven into each chapter. I can't wait to read the next book in this series, and more work by Skylar Shoar.

Might have slight spoilers! Absolutely phenomenal!!! I am apart of "Two Bookish Girls" and we recently done a live review of this book on Facebook live last Saturday. I loved Cassy and Harly! The only thing that I found wrong with Harly was that he is a Yankees fan, I can look passed that lol. So many good quotes in this book that I couldn't pick just one! As a child who was in foster care, this book meant a lot. The butterfly thing made my heart swell! I am so happy that we got to review this book and we will be reviewing the second one in this Duology on saturday! She deserves all the praise!

This was an emotional and enjoyable read! I typically don't read novels with billionaire tropes, but I quickly fell in love with this one because of the depth of the characters and their emotions. Cassidy is a well-developed character independent of the romance, and you find yourself rooting for her to find belonging and a family after her traumatic past. I definitely recommend you give this book a try even if it's not your usual read, you'll be pleasantly surprised with Skylar's storytelling skills! :)

The book centers around the romance of Cassy and Harly. Though a little long, I found it to be an enjoyable read. Definitely kept me turning the pages to watch their love story unfold.

Definitely consider this an insta-lust, intense romance. They both have their own issues and their path to an HEA has its potholes.

Secondary characters- Emy for one - made the story all the more enjoyable.

The cliffhanger at the end had me eager to start the sequel right after.

I absolutely loved this book. I am not much of a contemporary romance type of person (that is how I'd categorize this book) however this one was fantastic. The entire story was pieced together flawlessly from beginning to end. I love the start of the characters relationship and how this author built her world around the story. This story is definately worth the read. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.... 1 more thing that cliffy would have been torturous if book 2 wasn't already out!

3.5 stars for this debut from Skylar.

Skylar asked me to read and review her debut duet series and I was happy to.

I love the emotion and passion she shows between Cass & Harly, but I never 100% connected with Cass but Skylar can really tell a story that’s filled with heart and what it takes to overcome obstacles that can prevent you from being together.

I will read book two and her next book!

I was gifted this book from voracious readers and I had mixed emotions throughout because I think I am getting old! The fact Cassidy is an orphan with no one of any maturity to be her sounding board made me feel uncomfortable with her fast paced romance with older man Harly.... And I don't find the jealous possessiveness from either of them attractive. However, the final cliff hanger has got me wanting to read the next book.....
