(From the cover) In 1978 Prince was presented to the world as a black teenage pop prodigy who wrote, produced and performed all his records himself, and had a nice line in lewd adolescent metaphors. By 1980 he had transformed into a God-fearing punk-funk deviant whose raw tributes to the pleasures of incest and oral sex made him the great untouchable of American radio. Com ...more

Pop Life by Dave Hill was a well written but demanding read. Written in 1989, It was not the effortless read of modernized commentary. Be prepared to go back and read a few sentences once or twice to fully interpret the meaning of the literary information on Prince and his career. Personally it didn't bother me, as I admire a challenging read. I gleaned the feeling that Dave was a fan of Prince (which is a good thing IMO) Nothing worse than being a fan of an artist to bump into a book which ulti ...more

Okay, I'm a fan boy, I admit it. I have a Prince tatoo, hence the 5-star rating. This book, however, came out at a time when Prince was a total enigma. Every single page was fresh and extremely informative.

I never thought I would describe a book as orgasmic until I came across Dave Hill’s Prince: A Pop Life. Delightful revelations, myth-busters, and narratives from those in Prince's inner-circle combined with Hill’s fluffy journalistic writing style and insistence on getting into the nitty gritty give weight and rollercoaster excitement to the text. The one thing lacking, but not at the fault of the author is the first hand perspective of Prince himself. But as the narrative reveals, this mysterio ...more

I'm really hoping this book is less hit and miss than Prince's musical output.

Also, if you've never done it, you have to see not only his movie "Purple Rain" but also "Under the Cherry Moon" which is oddly entertaining and funny. I love it. And also "Graffiti Bridge" which is really a sequel of sorts to Purple Rain and features more Morris Day. Graffiti has some really cheap sets though, but is a fun film.

The book in informative.
But the pictures are amazing.
I think it is out of print.
So if you find a copy pick it up.

“It is as though they simply cannot contemplate the notion of a short, slight man who dresses and moves like a popular (mis)conception of a homosexual being attractive to millions of women.” 3 likes
