Mike Jacobs is a young, up-and-coming litigator in environmental law, working for the Department of Environmental Protection in the state of Pennsylvania. He knows his job, is diligent, and can go rogue now and again, working behind his boss’ back and against standard protocol to ensure the law protecting the land and the citizens that live on it are safe-guarded. Professionally he’s got what it takes. Personally, though, his life is messy.

I’ve been looking forward to Joel Burcat’s new novel, Amid Rage, since I read his first book, Drink To Every Beast. I was delighted with Book 2 from the moment I started reading it. This is the second of the Mike Jacobs books and it’s another serious roller coaster ride set in the coal mining area of Pennsylvania.
On the surface, Mike Jacobs might seem like a puzzling choice for a main character. He’s an attorney for the Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania. I bet you’re thinki ...more

I love legal thrillers. So when asked to review this legal thriller I jump right on it. It was very well thought out. I did read it fairly quickly and it was insightful and doe well.
It is book two in the Mike Jacobs series. I did not read the first book and I think this one can be read as a stand alone. I don't think I missed much from the first one.
I gave this book 3 stars.

Environmental prosecutor Mike Daniels finds himself stuck in the middle of a dispute between homeowners and a coal mining company in this faced-paced legal thriller. The plot is well-balanced between tense courtroom drama, behind the scenes political infighting, and nasty villains who never hesitate to perform whatever dirty deeds necessary to advance their agenda. It’s not all dark. There’s plenty of humor as Mike gets lucky with the wrong woman while the lady he considers right for him can’t p

Burcat lets you into his world with concise and clever phasing that makes you feel like an insider. In Amid Rage, his second novel, it is a pleasure to follow Mike Jacob as he walks the fine line between following his principles and living in the real world. The characters speak with their own voices and draw you into believing in them. Be prepared to stay up late to finish this book!

Author Burcat’s expertise is definitely on display in this story in describing the machinations of lawyers, special interests, and legal firms in this excellent tale. The characters, the plots, and the sub-plots are all expertly woven together. I received an advanced digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Another great legal thriller from author Joel Burcat! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of reading this book. The plot was engrossing, and the storyline flowed over a beautiful roller coaster ride of twists and turns in the plot, and many different subplots. The characters were well developed, and I really felt like I could see them, understand them, and a part of their experiences. I also feel I learned a lot about mining and how it is regulated, which was fascinating. Although there were obvio

A really well-done legal thriller—which is no surprise, considering that the author is a lawyer himself! Mike is a well-rounded character, and you find yourself rooting for him to find a way to bring this case of possibly illegal strip mining to its best conclusion. The owner of the mining company, Ernie Rinati, is a horrid but not cartoonish villain—he is very believable, which makes it all the more terrifying!

If you love thrillers you will love this book. The action builds suspensefully and the plot will have you on the edge of your seat. Mike Jacobs is a believable, imperfect hero. The sex, the (sort of) unrequited love, the fight for justice, and the moral dilemmas combine to create intriguing conflicts. Throw in some LGBT, gender and race issues, and you’ve got a winner. Who knew environmental law could be so dramatic?

“The channel of Roaring Run itself was less than six feet wide. He stood at the edge of the brook watching the water undulate as it coursed over the moss-slicked rocks. The aroma was primeval, of earth and decaying plants and water and rotten wood. Mike loved the smell. He took a deep breath and held it in his lungs.”
