The Lies Between Us

Running away has always been something I'm good at.

I've run far away from home and back again thinking that each time would be the last.

But things are a lot different lately. I've learned that tides turn, seasons change, and sometimes, people do too.

I haven't seen Hoyt Blackburn in a decade because I was so convinced he wasn't worth my time anymore. I guess this is where I've changed since I found out that his execution is one of those inevitable things that life handed him. I can't ever remember him being a bad man, yet I can't shake that something isn't right about what's happening to him.

Maybe it's because I miss him.

Maybe it's because I wanna lay eyes on the man one last time.

Will he remember me? Will he even care? I don't know; the only thing I can honestly say for sure is that there are still some secrets we have left between us that have to be spoken before he draws his last breath. Otherwise, when that day comes, they may have just killed me too.

Yolanda calls it a Wholesome love, but I disagree. It's Holesome Love. It pokes holes in your heart for the words to seep through and coagulate deep in your soul, they overflow from eyes when they become too much to bear.

description

I know it's Yolanda and she writes horror romance...kinda
I know that in the end I'll be like WTF just happened!!😳
I Know that the predominant emotion will be of hung jaw and What did I just read!!
But nothing and I say IN CAPS NOTHING could've prepared my heart from being shredded to mulch by this pint-sized, Crooked-brained, couldron-stirring, witchtastical writer's foray into a love story.

"A pair of sinners bound by blood, hiding in plain sight from a wicked world that doesn’t deserve something as pure as what we have. Wrong or right, this is the man I love, and there’s no one left to stand in our way."

description

There's super dark elements to the plot, there's tabboo relationship like you wouldn't believe.
All characters from Sweet girl child - Gracie "Red" Blackburn, her doting father Hoyt Blackburn, her saviour, her knight in dull armor, her confidant/friend- Jori Davidson, Doreen, Mille, Uncle Jake possess certain degree of devilry on their constitution.
They're all liars to some extent.
The story is full of secrets and lies, half truths and hidden agendas.
The monstrosity of humankind is in full regalia.
There's molestation, abuse, murder, blackmail....
Then why am I sobbing so hard that I couldn't breathe!!!

description

The story tore at my heart, pulled the threads that were holding back my emotions and all spilleth over in ugly cries.
Jori...Omg Jori. The slayer of dragons, his heart, his soul, his every nerve and sinew and muscle and senses are directed towards his sunlight- Red. His being starts and ends for her. His life is being lived for her, of her and by her.

"A lion will always lay down his life for the lamb he loves, and it’s the least I can do for Red if the time ever comes."

description

Hoyt..😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
That's all I can say😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

"It seems like it takes an eternity to get to your destination, only to be sent on to eternity itself."

description

It's still tearing me up when I'm writing my review and this surprises me more than the story itself. Cause that's the last thing you'd expect from Yolanda. it just came out of the left and punched me in the gut so hard, the unseen, unexpected strike had me comparing Jori To Bates.
This is by far The BEST BOOK of hers I've ever read.

Here's the thing about The Lies Between Us.... It's hard to write a review for this book without giving too much away!! In my opinion this book is like nothing else I have read by Yolanda. In the very beginning I felt one way about some of the characters and then as the story went on and more and more details came to light I found myself slowly falling in love with some of them and truly hating the rest and wishing unimaginable deaths upon them.
If you're willing to overlook a few detrimental bits of information and questionable mental state involving the relationship between the characters then you might be able to see what I have through the progression of this story. While this wasn't really meant to be a romance(No worries! Everyone is still very much unstable in this book) you can't help but see the intense connection between two of the characters. Trust me when I say that these two have a love like no other and are willing to do whatever it takes to protect one another from the torment of their horrific pasts. These two have been through hell and back with each other! Again, trust me on this! So, for me, it's not hard to see how they ended up in the situations that they have.
Ultimately, there is a kind of sense of poetic justice feel to this one. I feel as though this quote helps put it all into perspective a bit, "Some secrets can be kept, while others have been witnessed by silent and damaged innocence. The truest testament of the heart is how long it's willing to hold on to such a secret to salvage what they can of the person that it beats for so fiercely." Now the question is what will come of these two when the truth reveals itself and will someone finally put an end to the madness they are living in?? I guess you'll just have to read it to find out!?

Go in blind by reading this!

"A pair of sinners bound by blood, hiding in plain sight from a wicked world that doesn’t deserve something as pure as what we have. Wrong or right, this is the man I love, and there’s no one left to stand in our way."

This has been in my library for ages, and just finished reading earlier, and oh boy the story is borderline taboo and dark Such an unputdownable. The writing style was remarkable, shocking plot twist, how the past parallel to the present.

While I was reading the first chapter I honestly don't know how the storyline will take off. The level of madness and anxiety is on another level. Jori and Gracie (Red) characterization was grounded.

The Lies Between Us deals with a very sensitive subject that you didn't even know not until it slowly flattened chapter by chapter. From plot device to storyline then characterization it was all around executed.

This is what happens when The Lies becomes the Truth

This is a tale of forbidden and sick...

Now this is my kinda 5-star read! I was so stunned by this book I couldn’t look away for a second. The twists and the turns, the mind-fuckery, with characters and acts that will make you question your morals…I can’t even describe the river of emotions this book made me feel. I had to read it twice just to get it out of my system – in a good way! I couldn’t even write I was so transfixed. And you know what? I’m going to read it again.

Yolanda really smashed it outta the park with this one. I really hope she writes more stories like this and sends them all my way because I always struggle to find a good book that will keep me hooked.

5 twisted, addictive, give-me-more stars!

This review has been sat on for a little while to marinate because I needed to gather my thoughts after the ending of this.

So, lets see. The Lies Between Us has a slow start. It feeds you bits and pieces, slowly creating an addiction until you can't take it any longer and need to know just what comes next. Those little bites turn into huge ones and that mine field you walk in begins to explode. One by one, bombs are dropped and you are trying to find ways to avoid being obliterated all while running to the end of this.

This isn't your average Yolanda story. It's that and so much more. You'll find yourself wondering yet again how she was able to create a mind blowing story.

Don't worry, this one kills your heart too 😈 You may want to hold it close.

Hold on to your hats, guys. This one is a hell of a roller coaster ride.

Let's take a step back for a minute since this is a Yolanda Olson book.

This one is nowhere close to what you are envisioning. Sure there is a mix of thriller, the nasty "R" word, and omg but honestly it makes the story that much better. It has taken me days to write this review. I was left speechless, wanting more, and content with the end at the same time.

The Lies Between Us is a true work of art. We are met with two broken souls finding comfort in a way that should make you cringe, yet you can't help but to be drawn into their web. When you think you have it figured out Yolanda laughs manically while throwing in another string of lies, truths, and the fine line of sanity.

Yolanda Olson has done it again!
This book will keep you guessing until the end. With realistic characters making their way through their lives, this story will make you want to root for all the players to make it through. And the emotions are insane - you'll laugh, cry and worry about everything taking place. Definitely a must read!!!

Holy mother of god....I am so madly in love right now! This book, this freaking book is something I've wanted for so long and I didn't even know it. It's been a while since I've had a guy that I fell head over heels with like Jori. It was beautiful and twisted and that's my favorite kind of book. I ran out of stars for this book. Top 10 read of 2018 for sure.

My. God. Yolanda never ceases to amaze me with her stories but this one was just… I can’t even find the right words. It was such a perfectly-developed, mature work of a truly established author, with such deep, complex characters that I had to sit and think about the whole set of them after I was done with the last chapter.
They are broken. They are deprived in some sense, yes. They are certainly twisted and they will definitely get under your skin and will stay with you long after the last page is turned. Gracie, little broken Gracie, who tries to find her place in this cruel world after this world has dealt such an unlucky hand for her, resulting in her not only losing her family but damaging her psychologically, has won my heart after the very first couple of chapters. Hoyt - I can’t even talk about Hoyt. I wanted to strangle him and then hug him and then cry for him right after. My emotions were all over the place, and I loved every second of it! And Jori, the tattooed knight in shining armor, who would stop at nothing but to keep his Gracie safe - I just couldn’t get enough of him. The meerkat part almost brought me to tears, and trust me, it’s not easy to do with me as a reader!
As it is with most of Yolanda’s stories, everything is not what it seems, so get ready for some major plot twists and surprises along the way; however, I promise, you will love each and every one of them. The psychological depth of the narration and the realism of everything that was happening will definitely strike a chord with many readers. It’s not a made-up horror story which you will read just for the thrill of it; it’s real, raw, gut-wrenching in places, but that’s why I loved it so much! Highly, highly recommended! I only wish I could give it more than five stars!

Unlike anything I've read from Yolanda Olson before. Not pitch dark, nor the traditional kind of scary but just as twisted as Ive come to expect from the Horror Queen. A totally different story, love, lies, nightmares and a dash of murder just to mix it up into a unique Yolanda cocktail.

The characters Red and Jori, so in depth and brilliantly written into the complex web of lies mixed in with a smidgeon of truth. I doubted myself the whole way through trying to figure this one out. Theories ran rampant in my mind, but was I right? Well thats for me to know, and I'm not sharing.

I loved the way that the story keeps you guessing, truth or lies, can you figure it out? This book had a strange dynamic and some parts had me open mouthed in horror. Lines aŕe blurred, laws are broken and I couldnt put it down.

Wow.

5 spectacular 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Yolanda has absolutely nailed it with The lies between us. This book is just WOW, it's left me speechless. It's by far my favorite Yolanda read to date, and well that says alot .
It's nothing like she has written before.
This book is a psychological mystery that takes you on a journey that messes with your head, it's so intense that it makes you question your not only your morals but also your sanity. How would you feel, if you found out the person you loved most whom is your bestfriend is the one person you shouldn't be with?
It still has some blood and gore which is Yolanda' s signature trademark.
I can't say anymore as this book is hard to review without giving anything away.
Dont hesitate just one click that pre-order button now.
You won't regret it I promise

If you are a fan of Yolanda Olson you know she usually writes horror. This book is something completely different. It has some horror aspects but it's more real life horror. There is some romance thrown in but it's not your average romance. This is a book that will rip your heart out and stomp on it. It will make you cry and you will have no clue what will come next. This is twisty turn of mind fucks about 3 peoples lives that all change on one night. The secrets these 3 people have that they think the others don't know.

Now I don't want to go deep into this story because everyone needs to go into this one blind. Our main characters are Hoyt, Jori, and Red. These characters are all so complicated, they have been through so much, and I loved all of them. Yolanda writes amazing characters. Some you love, some you want to strangle but these 3 I'll never forget.

The story is mostly told in Red/Gracie's pov but we also get some in Jori and in Hoyt's. It's told in past and present time. Let me tell you some parts will be hard to read for some readers but trust me this is a beautifully written book. I love Yolanda's horror but I would love to have more books like this. If you haven't read this book please go get it, you won't be disappointed.

With this story we meet Hoyt, Jori and Gracie. Everything seems to be black and white and a story easy to decipher. But in true Yolanda style to need to look beyond the written words as she is the master of manipulation and never disappoints.
Yolanda allowed the main characters, Jori and Gracie to meander around in her head and drip feed her their story. They were demanding and wanted the true story and reasons for doing what they want to do and will do, to be known. Sure there is love, hope, desperation and a sort of revenge but don't be fooled this is not a fluffy romance novel.
My heart was ripped out with this story and I was balling my eyes out because of it and that in itself is not an easy feat to achieve. Me cry over a book! A fiction story, but hell I felt I was on this jouywith them.
Of course this story will not be for everyone but that is what I expect from this author. She is constantly pushing the boundaries, making you squirm and writing about the taboo in the world.
Thanks Yolanda on another fantastic read.

The Lies Between Us is not your usual horror-loving Yolanda story. This one has a different essence in a more raw, deep, dark and holy hell way. You still have the Yolanda style, but I felt like I was watching a soap opera and I did not want the story to end. I was addicted.  The characters developed through out the story, the plot thickens, there are twist and NOOs and feels slap you in your face moments.

You follow the  characters Jori, Red and Hoyt as they tell their story of the past and present, but the secrets they kept, the pain they shared, the love they have and the lies between all tell for a fasantaing story.

I rate this as 5 stars. Yolanda does what she does best and plays with your emotions and mind in the darkest of places and situations lighted by the flickering flame of hope.

To start with this is not the usual blood, guts and gore Yolanda usual writes, instead she had given us a mind twisting tale. You start reading this book and go aww this is gonna be a nice romance story.... NO that’s not what happens!!! It’s a story of love that maybe shouldn’t be. It’s a man trying to be the “hero” of his own story. It’s a tale of revenge. It’s a mind twisting tale of lust and greed. It’s a sad tale of the deplorable things people do to each other. You’ll love the characters then hate them. Then you’ll hate yourself for loving them again. Seriously it’s a book that needs to be read. Especially if you love her darker books. While not much blood is spilled. It makes up for it by making you question your morals. Lines will be crossed in this book, but it’s one of those damn what did I just read? I don’t know but I might need more of this.. type of books.

This is not your typical horror book although yes, it is full of blood and gore. From the first chapter of The Lies Between Us Yolanda Olson leaves you making assumptions and falling in love with the characters. I would not classify this book as romance, but it does have some romantic qualities. There are 3 main characters in the story all with very dominate personalities. You have a Father that does what ever he can for his daughter. A strong male lead that is always ready to take on the world and a very determined to know the truth female. Over all, the path these characters take is both heart breaking and heartwarming. There is no limit to love. There are twist and turns that will keep you on your toes. I highly suggest this book to everyone.

I'm new to Yolanda and have been binge reading her recently. I don't want to say too much in my review because you just have to read it and learn everything for yourself. What I will say is that it is different to her other books. It's brutal in places, beautiful in others but honestly a read I could not put down. It has characters you want to castrate and others you love without question. Your heart will break for them, mine did, and I needed time to process the book before even contemplating a review.

Highly recommended, well written and a read to play with your emotions.

Have I mentioned yet that you need to read this because you really do! I can't wait to read more.

Heartbreakingly Beautiful

This book. This. I'm not sure how to describe my emotions from this book. I wanted to punch something halfway through. The injustices handed to these kids, and for me they were broken kids, even as lovers, the travesties will rip your soul apart.
If your heart sings for another, who is to say if it is proper or not. Always stick with the one who protected you your whole life.
Yolanda Olson ripped my soul to shreds with Jori and Gracie . If you don't pick up another book this year - read this one!

2.5 ⭐️⭐️

This book is not for everybody. Trigger warnings:
- Sexual child abuse/ pedophile uncle.
- Murder.
- Incestuous relationship between blood siblings.

I wasn’t bothered by the topics touched in this book but I wouldn’t call it a “romance book”. Yes, there is a “love story” but the plot centers more around the childhood trauma the main protagonists had to survive.

I found very confusing how the chapters went from present to different points in the past and in different POVs. The story timeline was hard to follow and it ruined the flow of the story.

I applaud the author for going all in with the forbidden part of the relationship, the main characters are in fact blood siblings and I like the author didn’t tapped out with a “twist” at the end.

I felt the characters weren’t fleshed out and the bond between the H and h was just there, the “past” chapters didn’t give any kind of explanation, I found no depth in their love for each other.

I was absolutely not ready for this book! I kind of knew what was going on, based on the groups that I have seen it recommended in, but that wasn't what got to me. And honestly, the romance was almost a backseat storyline to everything else that was happening. Surprisingly, for once, I was okay with that. The character backgrounds are what did me in. Had me blubbering like a baby. The whole story was so beautifully written. Highly recommend to anyone who needs a great story, and has an open mind.

My only negative is that there were no markers indicating a change in point of view. Listening to the audiobook was good, but it was hard to tell who was speaking because of that, and there wasn't really any change in tone between character voicing.

*If you are easily offended/triggers or can not read anything that has sexual abusive, self harm, or sexual content this is not your book.

What to say about this book but OH MY!
I love everything that Yolanda Olson writes and this book is a bit different than her other books but her way to surprise and throw me a curve ball is all the same.
I didn’t expect this story as I said it is different than what she has written but I loved every bit of this book.
It took me 4.5 hours to read since my heart was beating so fast and hard waiting for the big BOOM. Boy was there ever a big boom.

Gracie has been abused, torn and broken by all the ones that are suppose to love her. She is so broken that my heart cried out to her so many times throughout this book, BUT she never ever once stopped believing in her heart that somewhere in these “ugly” people it was her fault and she’d rather be at the end of their abuse than have others be abused. She has deep secrets that go so deep that the only one she feels safe enough to share it with is Jori.

Jori is a bit older and loves Gracie with everything that he is. He lives close by and watches Gracie through there treehouse. He is her protector, her best friend, and her absolute Hero. Jori has had a life of abuse and has never had anyone to protect him. He has always been the protector. He didn’t grow up with parents but was raised by an abusive woman who always let him remember that he was never wanted. Jori is gracious and loving man to Jori and will always be there for her. Caring for her and caring the secrets she has shared with him and the secret that he also bears alone.

Hoyt is Gracie’s father. A man who has worked hard and tried to take care of his little girl. Under his nose his Gracie is being abused by her psychotic mother and her pediphile uncle. But when Gracie is 9 years old when he is sent to prison on death row for murdering Gracie’s mother. Hoyt is now older and his time is almost up for lethal injection. He has the biggest secret of his own. One that can destroy so many lives.

All things come full circle when Gracie goes to visit him. Now she’s older. Has a life of her own with Jori. All of there lives are about to change and secrets will come out and the biggest Secret is one that will change EVERYTHING.

If you have never read anything by Yolanda Olson after reading this book you will be addicted.

Bravo Yolanda! Bravo!

*Had the honor of reading an ARC

WOW is not enough to describe The Lies Between Us by Yolanda Olson so let's try some other words. How about holy cow, holy mackerel, holy moly, whoa; cool, amazing, awesome, far out, hot damn; gosh, ye gods, gadzooks!! Yes, ALL words can describe this book.

Yolanda Olson has become one of my favorite authors to date. I love dark tales and most of the time, she writes twisted, gore and horror with some really mind messing twists. However, The Lies Between Us starts out sweet. It starts out so sweet that I was kind of wondering if I had received the right book from the right author. I mean it reads kind of like a sweet love story but then ... OH BOY!! JUST WAIT!!

In true Yolanda Olson form, the mind twists and all around messed up craziness begins to unfold. The characters that I started out loving have so many sides that at the end when I still love some and really am astonished by others, I question my morals and sanity!

This book is a love story in a sense, maybe not a love story that everyone can understand but the element is included. It is also a story of a father that just does not completely hold up to the hero status that his children want and need him to be.
It is also a story of sacrifice and the brutality of how people treat each other. Revenge and in someways intense selfish desires.

I would strongly recommend The Lies Between Us by Yolanda Olson.
The writing is stellar, the story plot driven but be warned, this story is not pretty. It is ugly and harsh and totally YOLANDA!!

Texas Hugs and Happy Reading...

So many secrets.

It seemed like everyone knew each other's secrets and was keeping their knowledge of the secrets a secret. I'm not even going to put in spoiler tags because I really feel like you need to read the book without knowing the secrets ahead of time. Every new chapter revealed something else, and by the end, the ties amongst this family were so tangled that it was easier to ask for a clean slate than it was to figure out wh oowed a debt to whom. This family! Such heartbreak and disaster. I wanted to hug them all (well just Gracie and Jori and Hoyt - the others got what they deserved), but honestly, they scared me a little.

I absolutely adored this book. I loved the character development. The secrets were revealed one by one; there was no "here's what happened" plot dump. We learned more about the characters' backstories the same way: little by little. The descriptions of the prison were vivid enough that I could see it in my head.

I hadn't read this author before, but I'll definitely be reading more of her books now.
