The Yukon Wolf

Rate this book
An incredible story of life and death, tragedy and triumph among wolves in the wilderness of the Far North.

In the mountains of northwestern Canada along the Yukon River, a family of wolves fight for survival. Trained by her father Payuk to hunt caribou from an early age, Arnaaluk scores her first kill at last, but she is not satisfied. She desires not only independence from her overbearing father, but to seek the love of her life.

After Arnaaluk is expelled from the family for disobedience, she crosses paths with two Tulok, a domineering but strong and intelligent hunter, and Kanak, a haughty and selfish subordinate. A romantic rivalry soon develops between them.

When tragedy strikes, Arnaaluk is called home to her family, and it is up to her and the wolf she chooses as her mate to prevent the clan of Payuk from splitting apart. Together, they must help her kin survive a harsh winter.

Not only do the wolves face danger from enemy wolves, the threat of starvation and a shortage of caribou, but also the greatest menace of all - man and his traps and guns. An epic adventure that takes the reader deep into the hidden life of wolves, their family ties, the love they have for their own kind and the dangers they face in the wild. A must-read for those who love wolves and the natural world.

Not the worst xenofiction I've ever read but uh. Yeah. It's not very good. There is no plot, aside from "survival". This could maybe work in a well-written book with strong characters, but this wasn't it.

The characters were also super one-note and therefore boring. I can barely ascribe any personality traits to these wolves. They're generic af.

The prose was also super dry and dull and lacking in gracefulness. It also really lacked descriptions of characters and settings for the most part. There's a ton of boring repetitive hunting scenes as well.

I also didn't like how this was written from the POV of a coloniser wolf pack and how the colonized wolf pack was written as the villains. And somehow we're meant to feel bad for our leads despite the fact that they're on stolen land obtained through blood and death? Um yeah no, that doesn't work for me.

I will give it credit for mostly accurate wolf behavior but not much else.

I also won't be reading the sequel bc it has an AI-generated cover. Boo.

I found this book to be written in a rather amateurish style, almost as though it was written by a child (which perhaps it was - I have no idea about the author's age!). There was little actual plot - the wolves go hunting a lot in very repetitive scenes, and most of them get killed off by humans or other wolves. It is not particularly engaging, and the characters are one-dimensional and difficult to care about. I have only given it two stars rather than one because there weren't too many factual errors, which is refreshing given that so many wolf stories are riddled with misinformation.

In conclusion - not a dreadful book, but not really worth reading either.

Apparently the story of a wolf pack’s struggle to survive … except there is no story. There is no plot, no characterisation, no expanding on the world of the wolves in any way. Reads like it was written by a ten-year-old.

This was a great story to read. It tells about wolf life and the adventure of a Yukon wolf. This book is full of ups and downs and never a dull moment. I look forward to reading more.

This book has next to no plot, and isn't well written. There are also large gaps in the text so the formatting is also badly executed. Not worth the read.

As someone who has always loved wolves I have for years now been in search of a novel that so wonderfully depicts the life of a wolf from the perspective of a wolf. And no, I'm not talking about White Fang or Wolves Of The Beyond.
I'm talking about the true harsh reality of being a wolf trying to survive in a world far too cruel to them.
The Yukon Wolf fit all of my demands perfectly and I am so glad to have found it.
Should the author write any more wolf focused stories I will be there to read them on release date.
