As usual, Woodward does an outstanding job of writing on his subject. The Trump presidency was as chaotic as it appeared -- Trump is astonishingly ignorant to history, the constitution and to understanding what the responsibilities of leadership entail. Fred Trump instilled the belief in him that one simply needs to throw their weight around and sound tough -- yet, he didn't have the guts to fire Coats, Tillerson or Mattis to their faces. Speaking of those gentlemen; it's clear they did their damnedest to protect the country and maintain some sense of stability -- when Trump refers to the generals as "pussies", Mattis quietly takes it in and doesn't react. Never in our history have we seen so many esteemed members, within a sitting president's own party, have such disdain and disrespect for their candidate.

Rage is based on 17 interviews that Bob Woodward conducted with President Trump over seven turbulent months of 2020. But it is more than just the substance of these interviews, Woodward also spoke with past and present members of the Trump administration. The title relates to statements Trump made about himself and relationships with other people. “I bring rage out. I do bring rage out. I always have. I don’t know if that’s an asset or a liability, but whatever it is, I do.” Rage is probably not a good book for avid fans of President Trump. In fact, it may have even contributed to his loss of the 2020 election. The headline after Rage was published was that President Trump knew about the deadly virulence of the Covid-19 virus as early as January 2020 and that he lied to the people of the U.S. That statement is somewhat disingenuous. In January, February, and even into March of 2020 the President’s advisors and global experts held mixed opinions about the pandemic. In the U.S. and around the world, leaders were presenting an optimistic face to the public. The “lie” is based on statements from national security advisors, not the medical experts, and Trump’s statement that “There’s dynamite behind every door.” It could be argued that Trump was his own strongest advocate and worst enemy in the communications department. In the Epilogue Woodward notes that in 12 years as President FDR gave 30 fireside chats. Aids and people wanted more, but he said it was important to limit his talks to major events. In a calm and reassuring voice, FDR explained the problem and what the government was doing about it. Compare that with Trump’s non-stop tweets! In Trump’s case, less would have been more. While much of Rage is dedicated to Trump’s management of the pandemic, it also covers international relationships. I found the on-again-off-again relationship with Kim Jong Un most interesting, but several others – Russia, China, Israel – are touched upon as well. The rambling interviews between the President and Woodward offer a glimpse into the Trump’s mind and maybe even, this isn’t too much of a stretch, his soul. So much, so much of his conversations relate to himself – his ratings and poll numbers, how he is ganged upon by the media and Democrats, how he is accomplishing things never achieved before, etc., etc. When asked serious questions by Woodward, over and over again he circles back to himself. The author concludes “that Trump’s presidency was riddled with ambivalence, set on an uncertain course, swinging from combativeness to reconciliation, and whipsawing from one statement or action to the opposite.” Woodward notes some of Trump’s successes, particularly on the economy, but even some successes against the spreading virus and pandemic. Still, it was not surprising that the final lines of Rage are: “when his performance as president is taken in its entirety, I can say only reach one conclusion” Trump is the wrong man for the job.”

Bob Woodward writes about how Donald Trump manipulated people to his advantage. He often would not listen to his cabinet and trusted Republicans and make up things as he spoke. How he was tolerated for an entire term is the real question. He was defeated by Joe Biden by a huge margin and also lost the Electoral Vote. He still will not admit he lost the election.
Bob Woodward interviewed Trump for this book several times. He actually quoted his word for word many times. The conflict of what he'd say one time and then switch his mind led to concern to many who worked for him. If they dare question him he'd fire them. During his four years the number of people who were fired or resigned was over 80 when this book was published.

Bob Woodward summarized the last four years of Trump’s presidential reign in a unbiased manor. He gave his all and throughly researched all talking points. I listened to this book and felt like I was watching the last 3 and a half years playing out in front of me. I am still cannot believe a leader and president of our country acted like an idiot when we needed his leadership in a life threatening crisis. I am thankful the people have spoken. Adios amigo! I hope he does leave the country as he promised.

Good summary with no surprises.

It begins with a quote.
" I bring rage out. I do bring rage out. I always have. I don't know if if that's an asset or a liability, but whatever it is, I do". DJ Trump March 31, 2016
Thus the title.

The conclusion on page 392 is an eight word sentence. I totally agree.

I deliberately waited until after the election to read this. My vote was not influenced, nor would it have been. Good history in real time.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! Is the first word that comes to mind. In the taped interviews Mr. Woodward did with Trump, Trump can’t even have a conversation. Only wants to talk about “what a great job he is doing.” A real narcissist has been “running” our country. May the new administration bring respect and civility back to the Presidency.

This is a bit strange. The book I read is called simply, Rage--not Beyond the Rage. I assume it is the same book.

I liked reading this book because I hate Donald Trump. Like so many others, I think he is a racist, narcissistic grifterd--and Woodward lets him hang himself by simply quoting the things he said during their many interviews.

The one that caught the most attention was Trump's admission in January of 2020 that Covid was a very dangerous, infectious virus--far worse than the flu. He of course never admitted this publicly and he downplayed the danger for many months. Consensus is thousands of people died unnecessarily; if he had been honest and left scientists in charge, the U.S. would not have become the country in the world with the highest number of per capita Covid deaths.

There were times when I felt the book was rushed to publication, but I can understand that. Clearly the publisher and Woodward wanted to get the book out before the election, and they succeeded. And who knows, it may have swayed a few Trump voters to vote for Biden.

FYI, I am a Christian and a Republican, who was hoping for Ted Cruz to be elected
President.

Woodward made some good point, information I did not know.
I knew about many of President Donald Trump’s moral short comings.

After my reading half the book I looked up Woodward’s education, mainly because he just focused on proving how terrible Trump is.

Most authors who have a higher level education understand in good scholarly work you have to write analytically. All he did there was to point out different things to support his bias which is fine, everyone has bias. But, scholars present things correctly/ analytically and prove their point of view.

For example I am reading a book by an author with a masters in English. One of the characters he wrote about was a hateful person, but he included a paragraph on his good points.

Woodward did not do that, I gather it has to do with his lack of higher level education.
(Usually in higher level education the professors hold you accountable to do that).

Yikes. This an intense listen as events unfolded in DC this week. The background story of Tillerson, Mattis, and Coates at the beginning of the Trump presidency were heart breaking. I have never needed to consider the pressures of those positions and Woodward did a solid job of explaining the burdens these men carried.
I had moments of feeling a bit of empathy of Trump. I really believe he is in over his head. This book gave background on some pivotal moments of the Trump presidency and then the timeline and facts relating to Covid. So much was happening at once for everyone in the world and Trump was not immune to the chaos. The book offers some perspectives of Woodward and in the end he offers his own opinion on Trump’s leadership. The reality is that he has direct quotes from the president and facts that either support what was said or show the dishonest nature of the man.

I'm too close to this in time... it seemed very long and repetitive to the news, revealing little that wasn't already covered several hundred times over.

However, it was readable and the specific narrative is well put together. I suspect it will only grow in popularity as more time passes.

This book is for those who what to know more about Trump's reasons for his behavior in the office of president of USA. Believe me when I say after reading this one will realize that Trump is NOT a deep thinker and his reason for all his behavior is personal gain.

Woodward has a wonderful way to get Trump to open up and talk to him, casually and openly. A revealing insight.

Interesting to read while we were still dealing with Trump as president but much of it was already known so not necessarily one to go back and read now.

The author appears to have done extensive research, recording conversations with #45 and referencing the facts. I found “Rage” to be fair and compelling. Thank you, Bob Woodward.
