Merriam-Webster’s Guide to Punctuation and Style, 2nd Ed
This is one of the tools that is a lot like reading a dictionary. However, if you treat it as a tool, and decide that you are in fact going to learn the material presented inside, you may find yourself reaching for it rather often.
As I’ve noted in other reviews, I bought a copy of this book because I really didn’t understand how to construct works of popular writing. In this one little pocket book, and yes, I buy used paperbacks if I can, you get Punctuation, Capitals and Italics, Plurals, Possessives, and Compounds, and everything else that had been giving you fits.
Once more, this is a tool. You have to read it to get anything out of it. If you already have a “finished” manuscript, referring to this guide before releasing the manuscript just might save you having to resubmit because of some error you’ve overlooked.
This is another one of those frequent references on my writing work shelf.
