It’s normal to wish that your baby came with a snooze button, right?
When I got pregnant, Will and I didn’t have a clue what we were signing up for. It turns out that there’s loads we weren’t warned about:
1) In the middle of the night you’ll be begging Siri for advice on getting your baby to sleep. (In case you’re wondering, whale music doesn’t work.) 2) If you make the mistake of going to a nightclub you’ll nod off, drool, and be woken up by an angry bouncer. 3) You’ll spend more time spooning your child’s cuddly donkey than your own boyfriend. 4) Communication with your other half will be via post-it notes on the fridge, mainly telling him to buy more milk. 5) Sex is something that happened in another dimension.
But even if I feel like I’m waiting for my motherhood powers to come in the post, at least I’ve got Will. Our old life – festivals, sambuca shots, an actual sex life – might be a distant memory, but we can get through anything together, can’t we?
At least that’s what I thought until, one day, Will walked out on us… If I’m on my own (apart from Siri, obviously) can I do this whole parenting thing? Or I am destined to lose my sanity one sleepless night at a time?
Fun. Genuine. Messy. Kristen Bailey has once again written an authentic, humorous, and heartfelt story. This is the third book in the fab Callaghan Sister series. you can absolutely read this as a standalone, but I guarantee once you meet these sisters you are going to want to go back and read the previous books in the series and then eagerly await the next books. This Beth’s story...Beth and her partner Will were living a bit of a party lifestyle. Raves, concerts, late nights, drinking, clubbing, lazy days spent sleeping, and loads of fun. BUT then after one night of too much fun *oopsie* Beth finds herself pregnant. This is the tale of how this fun loving couple deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and the first year of new baby Joe’s life. The good. The bad. And the ugly of parenthood.
Loved this story! This is a realistic, humorous, emotional, sad an honest look at motherhood/fatherhood. no sugarcoating here, you get all the dirty details. Loved Beth and I loved her love for her little boy Joe. Will on the other hand truly frustrated me and I have to say Beth is a better person than I. Although I guess I do need to give him some grace.... or maybe I don’t. My favorite part of this book once again was the sisters and their amazing relationship and support for one another. this family is just so wonderful flaws and all their love definitely shines through. And dad really stepped up in a big way! I don’t know which sisters story I am more excited for next Lucy or Grace? I think Lucy‘s story is going to be a hoot and Grace’s story is going to be so sweet and emotional, just can’t wait!

Another book about the Callaghan sisters. We Follow Beth in this novel, after she’s become a mother. There is lots of funny moments, heartbreak and sisterly love. The first book in the series was the funniest, but I still enjoyed myself and smiled every now and then.
Rain-on-your-parade, of course but hilarious! Q: Philip doesn’t look certain and I see him tuck something down the back of his waistband. In his pants? Definitely don’t be doing any more drugs from this one, Will. He then whacks out a small plastic bag of weed. He is a veritable pick ’n’ mix pharmacy tonight. Please don’t attempt to shove that up your bum in front of me. He looks at all of us. Will sets eyes on that bag like it’s a bomb. Damn it. I grab it. The queue before us creeps forward. I’m holding drugs. What if they tackle me to the ground, call the cops and I get arrested for possession? I have a baby. I can’t even put this in my bag because they’ll search it. I hate you all. I slip the plastic bag into my bra behind a breast pad. I will have to disinfect my tits before I give them to my infant son. I really hate you all. (c)
The Callaghan Sisters are back! YAYYYY! It's the third time I've reunited with them this year and they are like part of the family already.
This time is Beth's turn to take center stage. When we first meet her she's about to become a mother for the first time and let me tell you, that prologue must be one of the funniest things I've ever read!
The story tackles the effects of parenthood on first timers and, while it deals with a series of issues (body image, sleep deprivation, loss of previos lifestyle) that could make you run away from having kids forever and ever, it does it in a funny and uplifting manner. I really like when a book depicts motherhood in an honest way and not like the path of roses some parents try to sell.
Although not a mum myself (being mum to two chihuahuas count?) I completely empathized with Beth and her struggles, although I don't know if I would have been so level headed with Will. I found his behavior so selfish that if I'd had him in front of me I would have cut his balls (as a true Callaghan sister!).
Once again the Callaghan family put me under their spell. I love to read about such close knit families where everyone supports each other no matter what, with no sibling rivalry at all, only love and respect for each other. I just know that Grace's story is gonna make me cry and Lucy's is gonna have me in stitches.
Kristen Bailey is such a sassy lady! I've been a fan of her writing and her sense of humor since I first read her. She's not afraid to call things by its name and I'm sure she must hold some kind of record as the person who knows most synonyms for genitalia. I literally choked with the "meat Calippo" reference! Well, maybe not literally... just with laughter!
If you don't know the Callaghan sisters yet, what are you waiting for?
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another wave of pain strikes me and I bellow out some feral crescendo through the ward. Wolves in London Zoo howl back in reply.
Midhusband Joe continues to talk from in between my arched legs. His face and the giant lamp down there are slightly disconcerting, like he’s mining for something.
And who calls a baby Leonard? That’s just cruel… And he wasn’t good-looking. Face like a cabbage. She’s just inviting that kid to be beaten up when he’s older.
‘Do the stretch marks ever fade?’ I ask. ‘Mine are dark red, I look like a tiger.’ ‘Own them. They’re your new warrior stripes.
Swimming?’ ‘Then I’d have to do my bikini line.’ ‘No, you don’t. I swim at the lido near Emma’s and there’s a lady who goes out with full pits and fanny. It sprouts out like alfalfa.’
‘Sean also looks like the sort of man who wears bad shorts in summer. Am I right?’ ‘Cargo, knee-length. Sometimes the ones with the zips so he can add some length if the weather gets cooler.’ ‘If you married that, I’d voice my objections at your wedding, just so you know.’
My Review:
Maternity, birth, and baby issues aren’t my jam and topics I typically avoid in my book selections. But I couldn’t seem to pass this one up as I had read and delighted in the previous books in this series. Needless to say, I have few regrets after diving into this riotously amusing tale and am just as enamored with this author’s clever wit and irreverent humor as I was before. I cackled and giggle-snorted at the outrageous scenarios and sharp visuals her wily and cunning selections of words conjured in my cranium. My face is actually a bit tired from smirking. As there are five oddly captivating and quirky sisters in this family, I will be eagerly awaiting the next sister’s odyssey.
And, score! I have two new additions to my Brit Words and Phrases list with norks – which are a woman’s breasts; and gubbins – which is a multitasker of a word as it has several meanings which include scraps, useless bits and pieces, gadgetry, and a foolish person. For most women of my age, norks are generally gubbins.
I did not expect to enjoy reading this book as much as I actually have! While giving an honest voice to all the trials new parents (especially mothers) face the book was still charming, fun and witty. The easy pace and writing made this a quick and good escape read. All the characters were interesting and believable and even though I haven't read the first two books in the series, it was still easy for me to get into the story.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author Kristen Bailey for the e-Arc of the book. The book was published on 11th January 2021.
ARC provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Beth wasn't planning on getting pregnant, but a night of drunken sex with her long-term boyfriend followed by forgetting to take a morning after pill results in baby Joe nine months later. Beth and Will are deliriously happy with their baby boy, but what nobody has prepared them for is the utter exhaustion that comes with parenthood. Between Joe's irregular sleeping hours and Will's long working hours at his new job, the distance between Beth and Will begins to grow. When Will suddenly walks out on them because he needs a break, Beth is left to take care of Joe on her own.
This book is the third in a series but you don't need to read the first two to pick this one up. It's not at all what I was expecting, but that's mostly my fault. I read the blurb back when I first requested the book but that's more than 24 hours ago so I totally forgot about it when I decided to read it. Based on the title you could be forgiven for thinking this is a lighthearted comedy, and it is pretty funny at first. But it takes a darker turn when Will abandons Beth and Joe, and Beth is left to pick up the pieces of her life.
I think where this book really shines is relationships. I don't even think the relationship between Beth and Will is the centerpiece of the book. There's a lot of focus on family and the bonds between sisters, friends who are as close as siblings, and neighbors who are there during the hard times. The characters show depth and growth throughout the story. Some parts even got me the tiniest bit emotional.
The writing style is enjoyable and the story has pretty good pacing. Despite the first person POV and the focus on Beth, the side characters do get their moments to shine. Lucy was one of my favourites, but I'm also really interested in Grace's story, and I hope she gets her own book eventually because I am really curious to know what happened to her and how she ended up where she is in this book.
This is an amazing and honest look at motherhood as well as impacts on all aspects of a woman's life. We do lose a sense of self - which is a huge component of depression, in my opinion. Beth is struggling - Joe who is an amazing baby doesn't sleep. At all. On top of the after baby bulge society feels is supposed to disappear over night. Breastfeeding - constant eating, leaking from everywhere and how do you function with their size. No social interaction - utter lose of socialization, support structure. The house is a disaster - who can keep up with anything with minimal assistance from the dad? I felt all of these aspects of Beth's life - from my own experiences, struggles and the reality of motherhood. However, I just could not get into this book. The lengthy descriptions. Long chapters. It just didn't work for me.
Whilst not part of a series, this book and the previous two books by this author all feature the same family, or more specifically five sisters. Each book focusses on one sister, with the first book being Meg, the second Emma and now this book tells us the story of Beth. A word of warning before you get past the title page, right from the very beginning there are some sexual references and bad language, so if you prefer not to read that then perhaps it’s not the book for you. It is however all done in the best possible taste, in a light-hearted and very funny way!
Beth and Will are having a baby, and the book begins on the Labour Ward!! I could so empathise with Beth at this point!! Whilst it was 13 years ago since I was anywhere near the maternity wards, Beth’s experiences certainly brought it all back!! I’m not necessarily talking about the beauty and miracle of childbirth though, but more like the pain, being induced, the wonder of gas and air and the complete lack of any dignity or privacy!! Beth is a first-time mum, and we follow her bumbling her way through motherhood, surviving on no sleep, little help from Will and video calls from her sisters! I could relate to so much of the book, and have sympathised and laughed at Beth’s life throughout (sorry Beth!!).
I tried to make a list of what parts of the book made me laugh, but there were just too many to fit on the page! The list would though definitely include the breast pads in the nightclub, Yasmin’s dog getting caught short and for some reason that fact that her mechanic was at her birthday party just made me howl with laughter!! We’ve met Beth’s sisters before in the previous two books, but they are all still so likeable. The open, frank and no-holds barred relationships between each of the sisters was a breath of fresh air! The book is full of characters that you could either relate to or connect to (or both!), and each one added something to the storyline. I have to admit to having a soft spot for Beth’s aged neighbour, Paddy and found him hilariously funny despite his story having a sad undertone to it.
I won’t go into the ins and outs of the storyline too much for fear of spoilers. It is however, a very funny and true to life look at becoming a new mother, and how your life completely changes along with it. Amongst all the giggles and guffaws, I did find parts of the book quite emotional and found myself wiping away not just tears of laughter. There is no doubt though that this author is an absolute genius with her clever writing and skill of taking day to day things and making them so funny! Reading one of her books is sure fire way of making sure I have a smile on my face for the rest of her day!! Full of love, life and laughter, this book comes highly recommended from me!!
Let me just hang my head in shame as I admit to this being my first book by the author. Even though each of her books features one of the Callaghan sisters, having not read the previous two, I can one hundred percent say that this reads well as a standalone.
This book focuses on Beth who is a new mum and trying to juggle motherhood with her relationship with her long term boyfriend Will. Parenthood soon takes it's toll on this couple and the honeymoon period seems a far distant memory as life issues start to get in the way. We follow Beth and her ups and downs which had me laughing as well as at times wanting to reach in and give her a big hug.
Beth's family are like a whirlwind. There is so much going on and having read this one, I definitely want to go back and get to know the other sisters better. I am pretty certain I have been missing out. The mum and dad are just brilliant and even though their roles within the book are fairly small, they sure do stand out. Life without a doubt would not be boring in this family!
This was such a fun and at times, heartfelt read that I looked forward to picking up on an evening whilst snuggled up on the sofa. The author keeps it very real which I think made it so much more funnier. Kristen Bailey is an author who really puts the fun factor into her stories and will certainly leave you desperate for more. A book that claims to be an absolutely laugh-out-loud and feel-good page-turner and am pleased to say that it delivered on all counts.
Kristen Bailey strikes again! This is the third in a series of Callaghan sisters books and Did My Love Life Shrink in the Wash hits the spot yet again - the perfect mix of hilarity and heartwarming fiction! You don't need to read them in order, but you won't be disappointed if you do!
Many reviews reference this as a chick-lit novel, but I'm a thirty year old man and I enjoyed this novel immensely - I'm sure if you've ever been in a serious relationship you will too.
Will it make you laugh till your cheeks hurt? Definitely. I was crying laughing at the opening (partly because my partner is about to give birth for the second time and it brought back a flood of funny memories) as the story is so humble. The characters are so real you start to see them as actual people - that's part of the magic in Bailey's writing.
Lets me honest, who can honestly say they're ready for a tiny human to come into their world and turn it upside down? Beth (the protagonist) isn't that's for sure, but you root for her to succeed. She's caring and loving and despite the fact that life throws a lot of shit her way (sleep deprivation, cheating partner to name just a few problems) she keeps you in high spirits by finding the funny in every situation.
I highly recommend the whole series of Kristen Bailey books as each one has always made me laugh and lifted my spirits by the end.
Thank you to Bookouture for allowing me to read an advance reader copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
Firstly I should say I am a huge fan of Kristen Bailey and the Callaghan sisters. Kristen’s books are a breath of fresh air. Sweary, rude and honest in a fabulous way! We have all read reviews that claim books made them laugh out loud? Well Kristen’s books don’t do that. They make you howl laughing until you have tears rolling down your cheeks and you can’t catch your breath! This is the third book about the Callaghan sisters. Just when you think you have a favourite sister you find out more about another and you change your mind. Did My Love Life Shrink in the Wash is about Beth. She and her boyfriend Will have just become parents to baby Joe (the story starts in the labour ward) Despite the sleepless nights and everything else having a new baby brings Beth is happy until she finds out Will cheated and he suddenly walks out on her and Joe. Alone with a new baby she finds new friends in unlikely places and contemplates being a single Mum. The book is an honest - sometimes brutally honest - and funny look at being a parent for the first time, family life, and relationships. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. I have to say, I much prefer the other sisters partners. Danny and Jag are adorable but Will seriously needs to pull his socks up. I adore the Callaghan sisters and now that we have heard Meg, Emma and Beth’s story I am ready for more. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and Kristen for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
This was the first time I read any of the books in this series by Kristen Bailey and it won't be the last. I absolutely loved this book I have never felt so many emotions at once.
In this book (no.3 in the series) Beth and Will have baby Joe. This is a riveting story about the struggles of parenthood, love and family. Both Beth and Will are overwhelmed and neither one is talking to the other, leading to some negative consequences. Meanwhile baby Joe finds himself a modelling gig which brings up insecurities of present and the past for Beth.
This book is written so well, I really loved that not only do we get Beth's inner dialogue but we also get baby Joe's some of the things Joe is supposed to be thinking are hilarious. I honestly haven't laughed out loud at a book in such a long time (probably because I read psychological mostly). I loved the way not only did we hear Beth's responses to questions we often hear before what she actually wanted to say. It's harrowing really showing the side to new parenthood which is often glossed over to paint a picture of happiness. The book really opens the gate to discussing how it isn't all smiles and nappies but so much more.
I loved all the relationship dynamics esp between Beth and Yasmin, an unlikely pair brought together again after hating each other in school. It's fascinating to see how they are both misunderstood in their own ways and how in a way thar brings them together.
The relationship between the sisters is great Beth, Lucy, Meg, Grace and Emma. The family is so close nic and it is shown by how they support Beth through motherhood and Will.
I would totally recommend this book to anyone who likes reading. It's an easy read and so enjoyable. I laughed, cried, gasped and felt all the feels. I really enjoyed this rom com. I am more than happy to give this book 5 stars 🌟. I will now work my way through book 1 and 2 I cannot wait I'm so excited!
Thank you to netgalley, the publishers and K. Bailey for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my fair and honest opinion.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved the idea of this book and how honest it is in depicting what motherhood looked like in its early stage. I liked how the humor naturally occurred in the book, however, I think this book is too long and has painfully long monologues that most of the time outweighed my enjoyment of the book. I think if this book went through another round of edits and delete parts that are not that important and make the entirety a lot more concise, then it would be a more fulfilling read for my taste. I can still see this being loved by other readers, though.
This was a really funny and sad book at the same time. It’s the story Beth and Will, a couple who get pregnant and have no idea what they’re getting into. The baby doesn’t sleep and eventually Will leaves and Beth is a single mother. She has the support of her family, but she’s alone at night etc.
I have 3 kids and I remember feeling so tired I thought I was delirious. This book brought it all back in the most humorous way. I recommend this book especially to moms! 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I am already a fan of Kristen Bailey. She has a wonderful way of bringing laugh out loud humor into her books. Did My Love Life Shrink in the Wash? is no exception. The book was filled with laughable moments. In addition to the humor, she brings the reader on a roller coaster of emotions as she follows Beth's struggle with being a new mother. I found myself crying at points as much as I laughed at others. Bailey does a wonderful of job of encompassing the uncertainty and struggles of having a newborn. She also cleverly and sincerely explores the changes and difficulties that a new baby can bring to a relationship. Like the other books in the series, the Callahan sisters are along for the ride. I absolutely adore their relationships, the rivalry, and the love that permeates their sisterhood. While I love all of the other books in the series, I connected to this one the most. As a mother, I know very well the joys and hardships that your first child and newborn can bring, Beth sorting out what should be and what is when it comes to parenting really brought insight to the character. I will admit, that Will's character frustrated me. I understand his role in the story and plot, yet I felt his part had less to do with the story than Beth's own struggle to find her identity and strength. Over all, I adore this series and Bailey's writing. I always look forward to laughing so hard that I cry.
A huge thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Bookouture, for the opportunity to read and review this title.
Just when I think Kristen couldn’t out do herself in another book, she does! I absolutely love the Callaghan sisters and there crazy lives, makes me feel abit boring which is great 🤣 the madness is also told so well by Kristens witty and hilariously funny humour which i absolutely love, you can’t beat a book that makes you laugh out loud, the dramas of everyday life told in such ways is exhilarating, from boyfriends, parents, siblings to childbirth and the things most people wouldn’t say out loud, Kristen is brilliant and I do tell her this 🤣(she probably thinks I’m mad but I believe if someone is amazing then you should bloody well tell them that 👌🏼) I’d never read a funny book before I always seemed to read thrillers, so if anything good has come from 2020 it’s finding this fabulous author and her brilliant reads 👌🏼😝if you want a feel good laugh out loud hilarious read then look no further, the best and truest take on motherhood I’ve ever heard 🤣 I loved Beth and wills story, now I can’t wait for Lucy and graces stories 😍 out 11th of January 2021 pre order now 👌🏼 thanks NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this book
This is book 3 in the series but the first book I have read by Kristen Bailey. I am hooked! I loved this book. It can easily be used as a stand alone. I am looking forward to reading more in this series. Kristen writes from the heart. The lighthearted warmth of this novel along with humour grabbed me right from the start. Topics of motherhood, relationships, body imagine makes it feel so real and relatable. I have two kids and felt like I went back in time to my first born. I could totally relate with Beth on so many levels. She is a great character and I felt for her all the way through this book. The ups and downs of motherhood, a rocky relationship as Will is just "so stressed & really scared" that his first reaction is to run. All the sisters are so likeable and shows great family dynamics. This series is a lot of fun. I really felt like I was reading a book by Sophie Kinsella. I give this book a 5 stars.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Three and a half stars. Although TBH I think I knocked off half a star because it didn't go the way I wanted it to go.
This is a series about the five (I think) Callaghan sisters who are all at one stage or another of being a woman/relationships. So the eldest, Meg, is married with children and living oop North with her husband Danny. The second daughter Emma is recently divorced with children. They have each had their own books which I very much enjoyed. This book is about Beth, who I assume is the middle daughter. At the start of the book she and her boyfriend Will are about to have their first baby, Joe.
Beth and Joe (from my jaded 50+ POV) are like perpetual students, they love gigs and mix tapes and festivals etc. Their flat is a bit of a dump and they love nothing more than binging a Netflix boxset. Of course as anyone knows, that all comes to a grinding halt when you have a baby.
Beth is dealing with the changes to her body, a lack of social life, Will working all hours, and all the other mothers from her NCT classes seeming to glide effortlessly around in lulu melon leggings with adorable babies while Beth is still hiding out in elasticated men's trackies and an old concert t-shirt.
Something happens, it's in the blurb but it feels spoilery so I won't say what. Because I have read the other books I expected it to happen much earlier in this book than it did.
If this were a schmaltzy Hallmark movie with a message I guess the message would be along the lines of 'Be kind to yourself, others see something completely different to what you see when you look in the mirror. Be kind to others because sometimes they are going through something worse.'
I enjoyed this, read it in a day, but I didn't love it in the same way as I loved Emma's book.
I didn't realize this was part of a series but it reads like a standalone. And it's hilarious! Beth and long-term boyfriend Will are navigating the trials of pregnancy and new parenthood after a drunk night and a missed pill. Beth shares some of the more humiliating and awkward situations during childbirth. Then once baby Joe is born it becomes more like the movie Look Who's Talking as she shares what she thinks baby Joe is thinking. But the less sleep Beth gets and the more hours Will puts in at his stressful job, the farther they get apart. The awkwardness of her new body shape leaves her self-concious. When Will leaves them, saying he needs a break, things get a little darker but still with humorous moments. This was a quick read. I found myself laughing out loud so many times! What a great and truthful picture of motherhood. Thank you to Kristen Bailey and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The views and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I found the beginning of this book very slow. Not much was happening, and I understand it was a family drama of sorts, but I wasn’t sure how it was going to go for me.
I found myself reading along and getting very into the book. I was laughing with Beth, and I found myself crying with her too. I really felt for her and everything she was going through and I found I couldn’t put the book down. The struggles of becoming and new parent, and dealing with life and love and making ends meet. It was so real and so raw. I really did find myself enjoying the story.
This was a fun read of a woman struggling with life just after having a baby. I liked how honest it felt, and how the story didn't end with her in a place where every single one of her uncertainties was fixed. I was iffy on the Will plot, as I wasn't sure if the story would manage to get me back on his side, but in the end I feel like it was largely handled well.
Kristen Bailey has already provided me with plenty of belly laughs thanks to her previous two novels following the lives and adventures of the Callaghan sisters. So it was with huge excitement I began reading Did My Love Life Shrink In The Wash? which this time round focuses on Beth Callaghan and her boyfriend Will Cooper who are expanding their unit of two, the opening pages detailing baby Joe’s arrival. Get ready for a healthy dose of hilarity and a slice of side splitting silliness as the Callaghan sisters explode into life once again.
The author has chosen to explore the transformative effects of motherhood with a lightheartedness that is so uplifting as well as funny. I always enjoys novels centred around the theme of motherhood whether they are gritty and realistic or as in this case more tongue in cheek. That she also tackles the issue of body image through the eyes of Beth and model Yasmin is to be commended. I think one of the hardest aspects of parenthood, aside from the sleep deprivation, loss of identity and of course all the poo, is the coming to terms with the loss of life you’ve previously enjoyed. In this case it’s the music gigs, raves, lazy brunches accompanied by hangovers that party animals Beth and Will are mourning the loss of. As they welcome Joe into the world the author acknowledges how men and women react differently to this stage in life which becomes more and more apparent as time and the storyline progresses. I loved how each chapter is headed by a song title which ties in nicely with this couple’s love of music but it is Beth and in particular Joe who are granted the spotlight. And deservedly so! As you read of the turn of events, some unexpected, in Beth and Will’s drama you’ll either have a smile on your face or be howling with laughter.
Kristen Bailey really is the queen of the sassy one liners so you can expect writing to tickle more than just your funny bone in what I would call her most bittersweet novel to date. This author finds humour in the simple everyday moments embellishing them with such positivity, so that the mundane, the more negative aspects of motherhood sparkle with warmth, hope and love. If I had to pick a scene that really stands out in terms of hilarity then it has to be Beth’s nappy changing exploits in the school toilets where she teaches but there are many more to amuse and delight the reader. Admittedly Beth’s story made me thankful the kind of days she’s experiencing are long over for me but having said that a baby is always your baby whatever their age. You don’t ever forget both the upheaval and the joy they bring! References to the muslins, a staple requirement for any new mother took me back to my own experiences of motherhood and the fact my daughter loved her muslins so much they became her comfort blankets. To this day she still has one even though she’s now an adult!! So thank you Kirsten for enabling me to reminisce slightly. I definitely had my rose tinted spectacles on at the resurgence of parenting memories as I allowed myself to become totally engrossed in the storyline, suffering a twinge of sadness that there isn’t always a happy ending in these type of scenarios yet hoping Beth and Will would adjust to their new way of life with Joe, finding their new normal. What strikes you most throughout Beth’s journey through the early days of motherhood is how close knit the Callaghan sisters are, how they all close ranks to support and protect one another, through good times and bad. All of them can be relied upon to bring their trademark warmth and humour, silliness and naughtiness to every single situation. I can’t help thinking that no day is a bad day when the Callaghan sisters are present and although I’ve said it before I’ll say it again I want to be a honorary member of this beautiful family!!!!
As with every book in this series you are guaranteed the addition of a few other colourful characters to help the sisters through their adventures, embracing the themes of friendship and love. For Beth elderly neighbour Paddy provides moral support, aside from her sisters plus her reacquaintance with the too cool for school Yasmin adds another dimension to Beth’s journey through the parenting minefield. Both are welcome additions to a storyline in which the Callaghan sisters rule the roost!
My only slight criticism is that I didn’t think the level of humour in this latest novel is on a par with the other two but it is still highly entertaining and a fantastic read. Thanks to the author’s writing abilities she managed to bring some much needed sunshine into my otherwise dull existence but it’s quite worrying how much I adore these women who are only figments of the author’s imagination!!! The Callaghan sisters are an unforgettable bunch and it fills my heart with happiness knowing I still have the pleasure of Lucy and Gracie’s adventures to enjoy at some point in the near future. I cannot recommend this series more highly and will be bereft when I reach the last chapter in the lives of these five wonderful women . My thanks as always to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read.
When I started reading this book, I had no idea that there were other books in the series. It doesn't really matter, this book reads just fine as a standalone.
Beth and Will find themselves accidentally pregnant and when baby Joe is born, their lives are turned upside down. New parenthood is always difficult, and even though my youngest is now 25, I haven't forgotten this feeling!! Joe is a particularly handsome baby and that leads to a bit of baby modelling work, with some of those scenarios being hilarious.
The author clearly has a good idea of what it is like to be breastfeeding and to not have your pre-baby body just zing back immediately after birth etc. I was quite sad what happened with Will and Beth's relationship and I would have felt like whacking him over the head for his selfish behaviour!
Anyway, this is an enjoyable book and I feel like I need to go and read the other books by this author now.
I was drawn to this book purely for the title, it made me laugh. This is book 3 of The Callaghan Sisters series but can be read as a standalone. In this book we meet Beth about to become a mother for the first time, she and her long-term boyfriend Will were quite the party-goers and hadn’t planned to have children but after one drunken night, their lives are about to change. I found myself captured from very early on and remember feeling very much like what Beth did after having a baby. It was raw and real. It had me laughing so many times, but I also felt empathy for Beth too and wanted to cry along with her. We have all been there. There was so much that went one in baby Joe’s first year of life. The support she had from her family was amazing, and the friendship that blooms between her and an unlikely person was lovely. It was written so well and like the author was living Beth’s life. I also loved Beth’s sisters, each are different to each other but I need to get to know them more so will definitely be grabbing the first two books in the series.
Thank you Bookouture through NetGalley for and ARC for an honest review.
This book was fine. I did like the sister dynamics, how they tell each other everything. There are 4 sisters so everything was chaotic at times, but i loved it. I also loved the relationship with Paddy, her neighbor, it was so cute and awesome. At first, all the internal monologues of the main character made me laugh and happy, but as the story went on I felt they were very long and sometimes made no sense. Some of the relationships with other characters were so frustrating to read. What made me the most upset was the relationship with her significant other, mostly how the guy acted. There was so much miscommunication and no communication at all. I hated that. The whole problem could've been avoided it they just sat down and talked.
When I’m hankering for a reality check with humor and love, I reach for Kristen Bailey. Her crazy funny and no-holds-barred honest moments with the Callaghan sisters hit close to home. They are a close-knit family dealing with their everyday lives like troopers. Meg, the eldest, is the “ringleader spokeswoman” from Has Anyone Seen My Sex Life?, Emma is the put-together doctor with a crap ex-husband in Can I Give My Husband Back?, Grace is the sensible sister who is a widow, Lucy is the fun wild-child, Beth is the nice sister and newly single mother without a clue.
This is Beth’s story about an unplanned pregnancy, a cute baby with a winning smile, and an AWOL father. She is a phenomenal mom dealing with many changes with her life and body and finding the time to make new lifelong friends who have her back as she tries to understand why the man she loves leaves her.
As for Beth’s boyfriend, Will. He makes some stupid choices that make him look very bad and he will have to work hard to become the man and father that Beth and little Joe need.
Who wouldn’t love Beth’s amazingly supportive family, the Callaghan collective, who each give her heartfelt and much-needed advice? In addition, her friends, old and new, are so important to her mental health and her self-confidence.
The laughs are loud from Beth’s outrageous and bittersweet birthday party to Lucy and Beth exercising in the park. The tears are real with Beth’s emotional turmoil and Will’s honest apology letter. The ending is HEA with a loving and necessary gesture from Beth’s dad.
I recommend this lovely, humorous, realistic story about the challenges of motherhood/fatherhood.
Thank you to Ms. Bailey for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectations of a positive review.
