A massive tome that covers much of the variety that is found in Middle English, both geographically (southern English varied dramatically from northern, and the Highlands was another world entirely) and temporally (from the earliest middle English of the 12th century, to early modern English in the 15th).

The writing and analysis are good. I gave a lower marks because I prefer to read works in their whole, not chopped up and handed out.
