If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to be a spy, or how to write a spy novel, James R. Hannibal’s THE PARIS BETRAYAL is an excellent place to start! Let me tell you why, dear reader:
Spy class notes
Hero characters – who even save the dog!
Baddies that are reprehensible. But also, you can understand their motivation and relate to their actions.
ACTION – car chases, explosions, a near drowning in a frozen lake – all just an average week for our hero.
Let’s break this down!

I only have two words for The Paris Betrayal by James R. Hannibal: HOLY SMOKES. This novel kept my heart jumping into my throat and my gut twisting. The Paris Betrayal was my thirty-third book of 2021. Out of those thirty-three, I awarded two five-star reviews. Without hesitation, The Paris Betrayal received my third. For the first time this year, a book demanded I stay awake until I finished it. And when I did, adrenaline coursed through me for another hour, and I couldn’t go to sleep. My hands ...more

“Perhaps a controlled release of the plague is … healthy for the world–and ordered and effective version of the chaos we’ve already experienced,” Ben is told in James R. Hannibal’s novel, The Paris Betrayal.

~ What ~
This three-hundred-and-fifty-two-page paperback targets those who like current-day suspense about trying to stop the release of a bioweapon that could cause a devastating worldwide effect. With no profanity, topics of pain, abuse, torture, and death may not be appropriate for immature

Title: The Paris Betrayal
Author: James R. Hannibal
Pages: 352
Year: 2021
Publisher: Revell
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
The Paris Betrayal is a suspense-filled novel on steroids. From the first page on, readers will have a hard time putting the book down as the action never lets up! The scene opens with a team of spies, going after a target they have been following for a while. Then, when the “package” is retrieved, it is like an explosion of enemies coming after the team and speaking the names of th

Hannibal's latest spy thriller contains the edge-of-your-seat suspense I've come to expect from him, but with a twist on the protagonist that I've not seen done in an espionage book. It weighed the story down at times, but it led to some poignant moments as well. The scenes between Ben and his mentor, for instance.

Ben himself is an interesting character. At one point, he tells someone, "Don't be fooled by my confidence. It's a spy thing. Fake bravado. I don't have a plan. I have a loosely forme

A fast action, spy thriller that had me hooked and my heart racing until the final chapter!

Ben Calix has his world turned upside down after his latest mission with the Company goes wrong. For many years, Ben has been lived and breathed the world of being a spy, and now, everything he has ever known is falling apart around him and his life is in more danger than ever before. The French SWAT is coming for him and Ben is now branded a traitor by his Company and on the run with a woman he barely kno

I could tell you that I was hooked between Hannibal and Betrayal, but that would be judging a book by its cover. That made me want to read the synopsis, and that, my dears, was the hook in the nose. After an op in Rome goes sideways, Ben Calix returns to Paris to find himself under attack. His Company contacts have him pegged persona non grata. This is severance. The Director has closed the door on him, and Ben has no reasoning for what is happening. But one man is on the prowl and ready to scoo ...more

When I was told I gave up too easily on James R. Hannibal's books I did not expect people to be so right!

A big reason I gave this book another chance is the author is a former Air Force pilot and I'm a sucker for the Air Force (#AirForcebrat), I've seen raving reviews from friends on his books, another reason is the back cover of "The Paris Betrayal" grabbed my attention AND didn't give spoilers that would cause me to be disappointed in the book.

I got my copy in the mail and not three hours late

I really wanted to like this book. Thrillers, suspense, and mysteries are some of my favorite genres to read. A good book to me will have the suspense with moments of doubting myself as I try to figure out who the bad person who is and the motive is. Usually I can figure out the person and watch the clues pile up before the end of the story. But in The Paris Betrayal by James R. Hannibal, the novel does start with an exciting mission and incident, which I really liked. A good thriller novel shou ...more

Wow, what a ride. This fast-paced spy thriller action novel checks every box: likeable hero; beautiful love interest; thrills and spills on every page; cool spy technology; a backstabbing traitor; a hero who must survive by his wits or get eaten alive by the various factions on his tail; friends-turned-enemies and enemies-turned-friends; a deadly virus and time running out for a cure. Whew. The author grabs you by the lapels from the first page and doesn't let go till the last breathless moment. ...more

I have been looking for a real, proper James Bond/Jason Bourne style spy thriller in CF publishing for so long... years even... and there are certainly some good spy novels out there, don’t get me wrong - especially in the more romantic suspense lane. But THIS! This is the book I have been looking for!

If you, too, have been looking for that super fast-paced, all action, proper spy novel, look no further!

The Paris Betrayal delivers covert action in spades. Meet Ben Calix. And then get thrown in

“The Paris Betrayal” appears to be a standalone novel that revolves around the main character, Ben Calix. This novel is a spy thriller based off of the book of Job. The four contacts that Ben needs to locate are supposed to represent the four friends of Job; however, only three friends of Job are mentioned in the Bible: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. So I am wondering if the fourth person is based off of Elihu that was listening to Job and his friends. This ...more

The Paris Betrayal is another great suspense thriller by author James R. Hannibal.

The Paris Betrayal has short chapters and lots of suspense. I was quickly reading the chapters while the suspense built. I really liked Clara, Ben, and Clara’s dachshund, Otto. I had problems figuring out who some of the antagonists were and I liked that.

My introduction to the writings of Mr. Hannibal was the great Talia Inger series. If the reader likes a quick suspense novel pick up The Paris Betrayal.

I was so glad to have two rainy days in which to devour this book. I can only hope for a sequel. This is one I will definitely be recommending to my husband. It is not always easy to find books that appeal to both men and women. A well-written spy novel with a hint of romance is just the ticket. Ben Calix is a man of honor who has been labeled a traitor, a man who finds himself without support or resources while trying to save thousands from a horrible death. The author's background as a stealth ...more

If espionage and burned spies are your thing, then this is the book for you. Ben Calix is that burned spy. The problem is that he doesn't realize it until it is too late. If something can go wrong it's going to. Every step of the way Ben is thwarted in his attempts to clear his name and return to good graces with the Company.

But why? What has Ben done to deserve this? That my friend is kept a mystery until the very end. It is a mystery that the reader isn't privy to, which makes the suspense bec

Ben Calix experiences many problems after he is given severance. Throughout all the trouble, he maintains his loyalty and duty. He also learns that there is more at play in life than he expected.

Starting with page one, the action grabs you and doesn’t let go. Each page makes you want to turn to the next, and reading one chapter quickly turns into reading as many as you can. The characters are well described and there is a good mix of action and time to catch your bearings on what has happened. H

Suspenseful. Fast paced. Addictive. I happily lost hours of sleep last night with this page turner. This is a well written book. James R Hannibal clearly has an abundance of knowledge, is well researched and highly creative. My expectations for this book, being written by a new-to-me author, were exceeded by far. I haven’t found a really good contemporary suspense novel in quite a while. They seem to be rare when it comes to inspirational fiction. But this one definitely hits the mark. I can’t w ...more

What happens when all of your friends turn their backs on you? Ben Calix finds out the hard way. When a mission in Rome goes south, he returns to Paris to lick his wounds, only to go on the run with no help from his agency. As he seeks to clear his name, the bad guys want him alive while the good guys want him dead. James R. A spy tale at it's best! Adrenaline inducing action combined with psychological trickery make this a book not to miss. Ben is a spy and he is good at what he does. But in one mission everything turns upside down. Now Ben is on the outside, labeled a liar and worse. But there is another man whose danger can not be measured. And he wants Ben to help him carry out a horrific act that will change the face of humanity. How does one man, cut off from all he knows, stop this? With one step, one day at ...more

The farther that I read in this book, the harder it was to put down. I was drawn in by the suspense but also by Ben, the main character. Of course, all the other characters kept me guessing, mostly about who was trustworthy. I especially enjoyed the lessons that Ben recalled from his spy training and applied to the situations he faced. Although his life fell apart in a drastic way, all of us can relate to times in our lives where nothing seems to go right. I definitely recommend this suspense sp ...more

It's been quite awhile since I read a good spy story. The Paris Betrayal is certainly action packed and was difficult to put down when I had to return to real life. Ben Calix is a spy whose mission went wrong. Then everything seems to fall apart and he is on the run. Even though he had to be brutal at times to save his life, Ben was a character easy to like, one I wanted to succeed. There were many twists and turns in the plot and some pretty scary stuff. I enjoyed it enough to hope for a sequel ...more

Action, thrills, and chills with this spy thriller. It started at a fast pace and never slowed down. I could not put it down. This is my first book by James Hannibal, and it will not be my last. I felt Ben got a very raw deal, his character was quite easy to like and to root for his success. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a fast-paced thriller.
