As a person who was not exposed to much in the way of proper social etiquette growing up I found this book very helpful. As a kid it seemed that etiquette was just a bunch of unrelated rules that some people used to judge others who were not in the know. Now I understand the purpose of etiquette which makes (most) of those rules make sense.

While some sections did not apply directly to situations I find myself in I read them anyway to get a better overall feel for the topic. As a person with debilitating social anxiety I recommend this book. As a person with Aspergers I highly recommend this book. So much makes sense now.

In a bid to be accessible to all, the new generation of Posts has de-emphasized rules in favor of a focus on a polite attitude, meaning one focused on respect and kindness. While this may be a useful, inclusive, PC turn, it makes a manners guidebook useless. When each rule is, ‘it’s up to your discretion’ or ‘ask the other person,’ then we aren’t getting what we came to the book for: hard behavioral rules that people who were not socialized into the upper classes want to ensure they’re up-to-speed on.

Easy read, though so poorly organized that, a few minutes into the audiobook, the exact same section will appear repeated (ex: the leaning-the-seat-back-on-public-transport debate). But nice and light and pleasant compared to heavier fiction. Hard to read through, fully, because of how dry and common-sensical it is.
