Recommends it for: Anime/Manga Fans

Despite the cover, Elfen Lied is an extremely serious manga. The main character, Lucy, is not a regular human...she's a Diclonius, human-like in every way except for two cat-ear shaped horns and transparent/invisible arms called "vectors" in addition to the two normal human ones. The story maintains many plots and sub-plots, and contains many sad and tragic elements combined with graphic-violence and nudity, but interspersed with comedy, the start of what could be romance in later chapters, and ...more

This used to be the series most recommended to newcomers as means to show them a amanga which was not some silly cartoony characters with spiky hair. There were already many violent manga around but this seemed to be the most broadly advertised and most didn’t know the rest so it’s like it was the only one. It also mixed lots of favorable elements such as nude and gore, along with interesting story ideas.

It also starts with a bang since in the first chapter we see a massacre of the highest poss

**Please note that this is a review for the whole series and is spoiler-free.

With an arsenal of graphic violence and nudity, colorful characters, and deep themes of social alienation, Elfen Lied is close to being the manga series with some of the of best character development I have seen in a long time.

My experience with this series began a few years back when I found the anime online. If the naked girl on the cover didn’t have my attention, then the first 2 minutes of the first episode sure did

Recommends it for: There are better manga out there. You don't have to read this one.
First review
The beginning was bloody.
So there are two personalities of that inhuman girl: Lucy -the murderer and Nyuu-the child. I wonder how these new species were created...
The artwork was plain and boring in my opinion.

It finally ended. This manga was good in some aspects but also terrible in others. Let's review the pros and cons, will we?
Good sides of manga:
1. The idea itself. I picked up this one for its interesting idea: new human race, more developed and e

This was really ...weeby. The good parts of this were the woman lead character, Lucy, killing rapists and overall being a freaky horror killer, primarily targeting creepy men. The bad parts of this; honestly, over weighed the good parts though. Lucy (Nyu) is frequently put into situations where, having one killer side and one nearly mute "hot girl" side, she is unable to speak or understand situations, and she blindly follows a dweeb dude and repeatedly tries to have sex with him. The man charac ...more

Elfen Lied is one of my favorite anime series, but I never thought to check to see if it was a manga before now. I do have to warn those unfamiliar with the show or manga that this isn’t as adorable and cute as the cover would have you believe. It’s violent (in some cases overly so) and has nudity.

I remember the opening episode of Elfen Lied and how my mouth was just hanging open for the first 10 mins. This manga is no exception to that. Even though I know the story reading it again it still has

Not my cup of tea. As a whole, I didn't much care for the art. I thought the story was kinda odd, graphic gratuitous violence and childlike characters and secondary themes. It felt to clash-y to me and the writing wasn't nearly smooth enough to pull off such a dichotomous concept. I don't have a problem with the violence or the nudity or anything.

I guess my main problem was that the whole thing just struck me as childish. Which I found to be odd, in combination with the level of graphic violenc

***This review is for the entire series.
A horrifically violent, gruesomely sexualized, shocking and depressing series that's further intensified by the horrific acts done to a group of young girls. The things we are forced to watch happen to them is sickening, which makes their bloody vengeance and murderous rampages almost justified, if it wasn't for the ridiculously high body count of innocent civilians and bystanders.

Everyone in this series is an extreme sadist, the type of people that would

This is a review for the whole series.

I have no problem with the bloody and gore scenes. I don't have problem with harem sub-genre in manga/anime. And in Elfen Lied, I like the idea to mix between the light harem theme with dark horror theme.

I don't like the slow pace of the story and the story is too long.

I've neared the end of this series now. When I was reading this, I saw a common pattern:

Fan-service, violence, fan-service, violence... some interesting plot progression. Back again with the unnecessary groping/molesting and mutilation/blood-bath.

About the characters: None were interesting. I especially disliked Yuka. All she ever did was obsess over Kouta. And all Kouta did was accidentally/deliberately get touchy-feely with ze girlzz.

Meh. I expected more quality, more psychological

I've read only first volume but I've seen all anime episodes. The manga starts the same as the anime but then goes in a completely different direction. (Just like Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1 )

The story is brutal and heartbreaking, full of violence and innocence.

The anime has very beautiful song Lilium. Here is my favourite version of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_SChD...

Violent story about a girl with destructive powers. The government believes that she belongs to a new race that will naturally replace the homo sapiens so everything is done to keep her secure. As you can already guess this doesn't last long...

There is a good dose of gore in the manga and also some nudity. So far the plot is very interesting and I am curious how it will continue.

I am reviewing this as a whole. Elfen Lied is not for children. It is for adults. And it's not even for all adults. It is for adults who think they know what sadness feels like and end up submerged into a world of utter depression and helplessness. If this series doesn't make you hate life, I don't know what will.

My favorite anime of all time, yet the manga...sucks ass. I personally preferred the anime for quite a number of reasons. Firstly, Lucy's character was more interesting with 2 personalities: 1 good (Nyuu) and 1 morally complex and greyish (Lucy), whereas the manga had more good (kaede) good (nyuu) pure evil (literal voice of DNA). The anime was much more ambiguous on the nature vs. nurture side of the diclonius killing instict, but leaned towards nurture since the only time we see a diclonius ki ...more

I'm just gonna have my review for the whole series here. I finished the anime last night and several of the manga this morning to see if there was more info about the diclonious. I really enjoyed the anime, plotwise it was exciting and fascinating and I had to keep watching to find out about the diclonious and where they came from. The series really pulls at your heartstrings at some moments and begs the question is this race really all ruthless killers who want to replace humanity, or is all th ...more

Saw the anime first, no big surprises in the manga. I find it hard to rate this book, so I'll rate it the best I can, with having watched the anime before:

The book follows the exact same story as the anime in the beginning. I started reading the manga because I found out that it has a different ending. I recommend reading it if you've already seen the anime, it reads very fast.

It seems to help a lot having seen the anime first, you can picture everything much better. I'm not all that impressed b

This manga is not as cute and innocent as the cover suggests. I will not spoil anything, but proceed with caution especially those who are faint hearted.

I really enjoyed this manga though. I wish I had read it sooner.

The anime companion of this series is by far my favorite. It is very emotional once you get past the first few episodes. The manga and anime are one of the best examples of the "you'll either like it or you'll hate it" trope. There is no in between. If you're considering stopping reading this series because of the art; don't. The art gets much better as the series progresses and the ending is much more saddening than the anime's

Good manga so far.

Ecchi (Erotic, not explicit nudity) with gore and an interesting story.
It's interested how turned out the last chapter of the volume. Only a few panels and the author made you care about the characters and delivers a sad ending to this volume.

Looking forward to see what's next.

That girls who have crazy mind powers can do extraordinary things, including ripping off a woman's head and using her body as a shield. Everything other than the violence is pretty well executed as well, especially later on. Completely recommended if yandere (Cute girls killing people) tickles your fancy.

Well, I put an order for this book for my town's library, and apperentally it's not available in English.

BULLLLL TO THE SHIIIITTTTT.

Well, whatever. I'll just read it online sometime later. Maybe this summer. I'm currently watching the anime and, dang! This one is in the top ten. So, yeah, I'll read it sometime this year probably.

Absolutely inhumane, horrifying, and could almost make the reader feel ashamed to be a human. This is an extremely dark, violent and heartbreaking series. All that said, I could not stop reading this series.
