Recovering our stories

Rate this book
“Recovering our stories” is a visual record of 6 interviews conducted with people who have experiences with addiction, with help from project 6, a recovery focused charity in keighley, uk.

Variously harrowing and uplifting, the stories told shed light and understanding on a topic still shrouded in stigma, and offer hope to anyone going through anything similar.

“Glenn uses a beautifully clean way of telling messy stories about real-life addiction and loss. Through interviews, he finds a way of narrating people’s personal journeys using his adventurous illustration style”

- David Ziggy Greene

I am one of those comics artists who seeks out the melancholy aspects of life, in order to create work that hopes to serve as an antithesis to a world awash with unrealistic, filtered, maddeningly positive and sickeningly vibrant Imagery, which if left unchallenged would lead to a cultural dystopian nightmare you couldn’t begin to imagine.

I’ve been known to draw fart jokes as well.

Glen has managed to create stories that are both moving, sad, and engaging. I felt the individual personalities of each of the people who had told him their stories. I’m not a fan of stories of grinding misery, and this graphic novel avoided that, balancing the facts and nature of the stories with the realness of each person telling them. None of the stories were JUST sad, although all had sad parts, but told the stories of normal people, and their relationships as well as the difficult times they’d gone through. Glenn’s approach to this novel is fresh and new. Couldn’t recommend it enough and am very much looking forward his next work.

It was a privelege to work on this project, to listen to the life stories of people effected by addiction was a real eye opener for me. Each story was brilliantly told, and I was honoured to have had the trust placed in me to handle them. The feedback has been brilliant and I'm so happy with the response to the work. I hope others who read it will get something out of it. This is the first in what I hope will be many more graphic novels to come. Watch this space!
