It is no secret that I love sheep. Not in the lonely sheep-herder who has not had contact with human flesh in months or years kind of love, but in the walk up and grab the wooly bugger and...well, this is not coming out so good.
It's hard for me to articulate exactly why, how, and when I began loving sheep. It think it was at the Grotto's farm animal exhibit at the Christmas Festival of Lights in Portland about six years ago.
I approached a sheep standing calmly amidst the turmoil of screaming children and curious adults, and placed my hands up the sheep's wooly coat. I grabbed him/her on both sides and shook the coat...and it didn't flinch and even seemed to like it!
Perhaps that's where my sheep love began.
(Of course there is also the charming reference to sheep in St. Exupery's The Little Prince).

It was several years later while working with soldiers and veterans at the Department of Veteran's Affairs that I had the bizarre yet brilliant idea to have a sheep farm out east in Oregon as a working retreat for veterans. That idea has not yet come to fruition, but the gift of this book from my Auntie Lorraine has made my dream more accessible!
Imagine, a place of peace where a wounded warrior might rest amidst the serenity of sheep, and find meaning in simple and humble tasks on a daily basis. I think it would be the lesson we all need in learning to live more simply, and closer to nature, and how can that not be healing?

This book contains all the information I think I might need to get started, including what to look out for in the purchasing of sheep, how to avoid illnesses and ailing, how to breed and care for, descriptions of the various breeds, and ways to profit from sheep (eventually they will add the non-profit section on sheep farms as a tool for therapeutic healing).

Thanks Auntie Lorraine for helping me get one step closer to making my dream a reality ;-)))

Raising Sheep the Modern Way is as close to the "bible" for raising sheep as I have found.

I have learned in my year and a half of being a shepherd that there are many opinions on what is the right thing to do in certain situations that come up, sometimes advice is in direct opposition to other advice. It is good to have a reference to turn to for guidance in these situations. What someone chooses after that still may not be the BEST choice, but it will at least be a GOOD choice when using Raising Sheep the Modern Way.

I was new to sheep raising this year, and this book helped me get through a great deal, and keep a few alive when they otherwise might not have made it.

It is well written and organized, with helpful illustrations.

It is comprehensive in its approach to the topic.
