Claus #8

Gingerman: In Search of the Toymaker

Rate this book
His real name is Christmas. It’s embarrassing.

He’s been accepted into the Institute of Creative Mind, a prestigious institute for eccentrics, outliers, and gifted students. A school located in the middle of nowhere with two-hundred-year-old castles and a formidable stone wall. A school where Christmas is celebrated the entire year.

Christmas trees, ornaments, and lights decorate the castles. Presents are given out every month, and students are pitted against each other in creative challenges. Chris soon finds out, however, the stakes are high.

The losers are expelled.

He spends sleepless nights keeping up with his homework to not disappoint his parents and to keep a cruel guidance counsellor off his back. But this place is more than a demanding school for gifted students. Chris finds a clue in a textbook his first night, written in code.

Run, run as fast as you can.

When he’s presented with an impossibility that defies all laws of physics and biology, anything becomes possible. Chris discovers students aren’t chosen for their artistic abilities but because of a DNA test. He doesn’t know what the school is really after. If he doesn’t stop them, Christmas will end forever. Everything depends on his courage.

And a strange little friend.

He grew up in the Midwest where the land is flat and the corn is tall. The winters are bleak and cold. He hated winters.

He always wanted to write. But writing was hard. And he wasn’t very disciplined. The cold had nothing to do with that, but it didn’t help. That changed in grad school.

After several attempts at a proposal, his major advisor was losing money on red ink and advised him to figure it out. Somehow, he did.

After grad school, he and his wife and two very little children moved to the South in Charleston, South Carolina where the winters are spring and the summers are a sauna (cliche but dead on accurate). That’s when he started teaching and writing articles for trade magazines. He eventually published two textbooks on landscape design. He then transitioned to writing a column for the Post and Courier. They were all great gigs, but they weren’t fiction.

That was a few years later.

His daughter started reading before she could read, pretending she knew the words in books she propped on her lap. His son was a different story. In an attempt to change that, he began writing a story with him. They made up a character, gave him a name, and something to do. As with much of parenting, it did not go as planned. But the character got stuck in his head.

He wanted out.

A few years later, Socket Greeny was born. It was a science fiction trilogy that was gritty and thoughtful. That was 2005.

He has been practicing Zen since he was 23 years old. A daily meditator, he wants to instill something meaningful in his stories that appeals to a young adult crowd as well as adult. Think Hunger Games. He hadn’t planned to write fiction, didn’t even know if he had anymore stories in him after Socket Greeny.

Turns out he did.

Gingerman is not my first foray into the world of Claus by Tony Bertauski and it won’t be my last. I have been loving this quirky series since the beginning, with Claus, Legend of the Fat Man.

Christmas White Blizzard, better known as Chris, is off to school. His mother loved Christmas so much, she names him and his sister, Yuletide. He is terrified of going off to school, but his desire to learn overrides his fears.

The Institute of Creative Minds is the ultimate dichotomy:

“Be creative and free. But follow the rules or go home.”

The Institute is unlike any school I have ever heard of before. It is Christmas all the time.

When he meets Joli, she decides to be his introduction to the school. I love her feisty, independent personality. She’s a rebel.

Gingerman….well, I don’t want to spoil your introduction to him, so you will need to discover everything about him yourself. I will tell you…he is…unusual. Whether he is good or bad, we will have to wait and see. The verdict is still out, but I do have my thoughts.

The magic of Christmas comes alive through Tony Bertauski’s descriptive words. So, come along with me, Chris, and the Gingerman to solve the mystery of the Institute. It is a wild ride and I think you may enjoy it. It is delightful, unique and mysterious.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Gingerman by Tony Bertauski.

Another fascinating addition to The Claus Universe!!

Yes, another fascinating volume in The Claus Universe, where all the magic of Christmas folklore long told becomes amazingly new with the amazing science of elves! This volume no only tells of Ginger man in a manner you've never heard but has some bold science and big picture statements of The Claus Universe embedded!! Good reading!!

A Christmas back story in which a Gingerbread man is alive - 3.5 stars

Gman talks but is only heard by a select few. Starting in a special year-round Christmas school, the students ("gifters") are challenged to be creative. They have to surrender their electronics and have to live up to demanding standards.

Chris is a late-to-arrive new student. His mentor, Kogen, offers help. There are daily gifts. Food is plentiful and studying is unavoidable. In short, it seems like a boarding school with perks. But this is a story with a moral and there are lots of surprises along the way.

For starters, all of the teachers are elderly. Even the mentors are decades older than the students. The headmaster, Kris Pelznickel, keeps to himself and tends to his special collections. Temperature wise, students and faculty need to enjoy year-round cold-enough-for-snow conditions. Except for the ban on personal electronics, advanced science is baked into the curriculum.

Family back stories are whispered--that is essential for learning how the school works. There are contests for which winning can mean staying and loosing can mean leaving school, never to return. In one contest, Chris and his team of two other students make an elaborate gingerbread house and a few gingerbread men as well.

Read on to get involved in the Gman stories. "Gingerman" a lengthy, involved story. There are quite a number of sugar crumbs sprinkled along the way. Santa and his reindeer make a visit when Chris is a first year student.

Christmas ‘Chris’ White Blizzard has been accepted into a very exclusive, prestigious school secreted in the mountains, but he’s not allowed any electronics, phones or family visits. The school’s benefactor is the reclusive Lord Pelznickel and everything object and situation has a very detailed Christmas theme. Once there Chris has a hard time figuring out and following the rules until he’s befriended by two well-informed students Joli and Sai.

Even though Chris’s situation and the odd ways of the school are scary, don’t give up on the story. The ending is worth it.

The connection to the previous book is through the Wallace house which is on the school’s property. Though I don’t completely understand how it works. The Pelznickel family has owned the whole mountain since 1805 which is where the school is. But the Wallace house was owned by Wallace Noel about 1909 and includes ‘hundreds of acres’. It was bequeathed to his companion: Annie and then down to the grandniece. So there seems to be an ownership conflict, until you remember that the Wallace house was hidden behind a protective force screen for decades.

Fave scenes: the Christmas Tree store, Chris organizing his Challenge team, the story about the boy trip to the port and making the food monster.

Bertauski Did it Again!

I’ve read everything Tony Bertauski has written and the Claus Universe is my favorite. Once again he has transported me to a different world that is familiar and strange at the same time. If you think you’ve got it all figured out, let me assure you, you’re probably wrong!

When Chris (real name Christmas) gets accepted to a prestigious school for gifted students (artists, dancers, singers, bakers, chefs) long after he thought he’d been refused, he stumbles into a place not at all like any school he’s ever imagined. This is a place where losing a competition can mean you get sent home. The story grabs your attention and the characters will stay in your mind long after you’ve finished the book. And your taste for gingerbread may be forever changed!

If you’ve read other books in the Claus Universe you’ll recognize some references but if you haven’t it’s okay because each is a stand alone novel. However, I highly recommend you read them all and enjoy hunting for “Easter eggs” as you read this one.

Gingerman: In Search of the Toymaker - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Tony Bertauski's noir 'fairytale' Gingerman, is the strangely fascinating tale of young Chris(tmas) Blizzard and his adventures at a most unusual boarding school. I must concede that certain elements of it reminded me of Harry Potter and somewhat of The Nightmare Before Christmas books and films, with a soupçon - in reverse - of The Grinch and Narnia from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
None of these detracts in any way, as Chris and his new friends Joli and Sai befriend the eponymous Ginger(bread)man, (who's come to life à la Nutcracker) and helps Chris to learn things about himself, his place in the world, the truth about what's happening at the school, the value of friends and family and many more valuable truths.
Well worth a read for fans of the abovementioned.

Get your copy of Gingerman: In Search of the Toymaker by the irrepressible Tony Bertauski, today - you'll never view Christmas in quite the same way ever again - it's great stuff!

This is such a unique twist to any Christmas tale I have read. An exclusive school for exceptional kids such as artists, metal workers, music prodigies, and of course, aspiring chefs was situated on a massive campus atop a mountain. At first glance it looked like an ordinary school with kids running around in jeans, shorts, t-shirts and no uniforms, thank goodness. Everything looked great, but there was an uneasy, uncertain feeling. What was that all about?

This latest chapter in Mr. Bertauski's Claus series was another grand slam by the author. His unique vision of Christmas is amazing, from his stories about Santa, Ronin, Jack Frost, etc., all the way to this story about a kid named Christmas. I actually think Mr. Bertauski could rewrite the phone book and I would be one of the first in line to purchase it.

I received an ARC of this book, but I am posting this review because I absolutely loved it!!

A mind-bending Christmas mystery. With unexpected twists.

A young lad named Christmas is given the opportunity of a lifetime. He is chosen to attend the finest school. But it holds dark secrets. Will he lose his mind? Or can Christmas be saved?

Tony Bertauski leads us on a fantastic adventure where magic and mystery abound. The mind games, puzzling dreams and the usual teenage angst provide a backdrop to a rather sinister plot that threatens the world’s most famous tradition.

My head was spinning as baffling dreams, deep mysteries, a smidgen of reality and a cheeky gingerbread man led me down a trail of unexpected adventure. I dare you to see where this spicy little cookie takes you. A warning though. If you don’t believe in magic, you might lose your way.

THE MOST MAGICAL SERIES YOU WILL EVER READ

I have just finished reading the 8th and unfortunately the final book in the Santa Claus series. I downloaded all 8 and started reading and could not stop. I am an avid reader and there are many fabulous authors out there. While I rarely write reviews, I do when I find one that just knocks me off my feet. This series did that, it ties in everything Christmas. I will not go into detail and rate each book, and as a stand alone they are if one could use the word "breathtaking" and certainly magical. This series is a must read and for those who don't believe in Santa Claus and the magic of Christmas be prepared to have your mind changed 🥰🎄

Gingerman is the latest novel in the Claus universe, and was, as always, well worth waiting for.
Chris (full name Christmas) gets selected to attend an exclusive school for creative geniuses. It soon turns out to be far from a normal, actually it's downright weird and scary! In some ways, it is a story which has been told many times about a young person going away to school or college and learning to cope with a complete new environment and new rules. But those rules! The pupils have to engage in challenges, but instead of not getting bad grades when things don’t go right, they are immediately expelled. Councillors and teachers can deal out red cards, three of these also means expulsion. It is very easy to break the rules if no-one has explained just what the rules are!
As mostly is the case with the books written by Mr Bertauski, things are rarely what they seem at the beginning and the reader can expect plenty of twists and turns. This, as far as I am concerned, only increases the reading pleasure. For the readers who have read other books in the series, there are plenty of references to characters and events in them. The beauty of them is, though, that each book is stand-alone and can be read as such. I honestly wish that I could award more than five stars!

Tony Bertausk continues his Claus series in the GINGERMAN: IN SEARCH OF THE TOYMAKER.  This is the first story I have read by this author, but it won't be the last.

Imagine receiving acceptance from a school for gifted students, but when you arrive, it's not quite what you expected.  Walls surround the school, no electronics are allowed, very strict rules, and very, very limited contact with the outside world, even your family. I guarantee, you will be kept in the dark as much as the students in this weirdly wonderful and scary school.

I did receive this book from the author and this is my honest and voluntary review.

I'm two thirds of the way through with the third omnibus of this series, having finished this eighth book in the twelve book series. I still think I'll have one or two left to read next December.
While I loved this story, like I have loved them all, it took a little bit for it really grab my attention; and it almost lost it toward the end.
Like all the stories in this series, there's definite messages in this one too. I think it's a great reminder that there's beauty in everything in the world if you pay attention enough to see it.
I give this book 5 of 5 Paws as I start on book 9.

This is Book 8 in the Claus Series (each enjoyable as stand-alone stories).

The boy’s real name is Christmas and he’s been accepted to the prestigious Institute of Creative Mind, a school in the middle of nowhere where it’s Christmas all the time and things are never what they seem.

Although I look forward to a holiday read during the season, I’ve fallen behind with Tony Bertauski’s Claus series. So I read two stories this year.

Ah...the latest in the Claus Universe. This one focuses on how the Gingerbread man came to be. Lots of nuggets in here if you have read the other books. I especially liked the ending. It wasn't what I expected. The characters are well developed and I could really imagine all the visuals described. I am very fond of this author's writing and especially the Claus universe.

Another wonderfully twisted tale by Tony Bertauski. I love the world these stories take place in. A mix of magic and technology, beauty and horror, weird and wonderful. This is an interesting story about creative misfits who are collected into a school that seems to be a front to something diabolical. I enjoyed Chris’s adventure and his enlightenment. I loved reading this!

Gingerman (Claus Book 8) is the biggest Christmas fantasy of the eight!

I guess I feel that way because it is such a reach for someone that loves Christmas stories. Mr Bertauski has
delighted me in all the seven previous books and I think I will treat myself to all eight in hardcopy for Christmas.
Yes 👍 I love them all and hope for the next bit of magic! Thank you so much!

This is another winner by Tony Bertauski. The Gingerman, like all the books in the Claus Universe, is entertaining and impossible to put down. While it is a stand alone book, it references the other novels as the story develops.

My hope is that there will be more Claus books coming (I'm waiting for one about an ornament)

Gingerman

This is book 8 in Tony Bertauski’s Claus and it maintains the same high standard as previous volumes. When Chris Blizzard is accepted at an exclusive and mysterious boarding school for exceptional gifted students he finds himself involved in a very peculiar set of circumstances.
I look forward to reading book 9 in the series.

Merry Christmas

I loved how the story developed. You knew something was up with Lord Pez but not until they in the book were you sure and there still until you learned what.

All in all another great addition to this growing series. I look forward to next years Christmas Story.
