What happens when the playboy gets played? Max Valentine is used to women falling at his feet, and never once had he thought about settling down. Not even close. Though his new career as a writer has brought up different issues in his life. Writer's block. His mom's solution is that he visit his aunts in Birch Cove. Quiet, small town life should be boring enough to make him write, right? Wrong, his former colleague is next door, and she is nothing like the woman he knew. The woman who did nothing to fight back at being fired as turned into a vivacious, outgoing woman. And he can't stop staring at her. Della Connor Hart is back in Birch Cove after her life's checklist is torn to shreds just as she was about to make partner. Now months later, she is busier than ever in her own little law firm of one. And she finally feels... free. She stops dying her hair, wears whatever she likes and even starts finding joy in her life again. That is until Max Valentine moves in next door. Yes, that Max Valentine. The one man she wished for years would look her way. But Della lives by a no strings rule, even for Max Valentine. Especially for Max Valentine. Della is prickly at every turn, but that doesn't stop Max from wanting her. He just has to get past her defenses. After all, his heart isn't on the line, it never has been before. Can he take the chance if he is wrong? Max Valentine is Looking at You is book three in the Hart Sisters Series, a heartfelt series about finding love with just the right amount of steam and stories that will stay with you after you've turned the last page.
Alie Garnett loves a little spice in her books. She lives on a small hobby farm in northern Minnesota with her husband and two kids. When she isn't writing, she is doing everything that she didn't 'get to' while writing.
I liked Max. I did not care for Della. The thing that ruined this book for me was the editing/proofreading...or the lack thereof. I know that there are common words that trip up a lot of people: to for too; then for than; except for accept. Actually, these three examples occur multiple times throughout this book...really, throughout the series. Then there were the sentences that just didn't make any sense, like this one from pg. 66 in the Kindle ebook version: "She some time every and every now and then she stopped typing just to gaze at him." WTF does this even mean?! There was missing punctuation and inconsistencies with details...like when Max's eyes started out gray, then turned brown on pg. 26 in the Kindle ebook version, then they were back to gray again.
Seriously? I don't know a lot about self-publishing and I'm sure it can be expensive. But please...for the sake of all that is good and right...and for the sake of basic grammar...hire a good editor/proofreader. Oh, there is an editor named on the copyright page and if I were them, I would try to get my name removed. This is not a good look.
Does my entire 2-star review rest on the horrible editing/proofreading? No.
As I said, I didn't really care for Della. She seemed sort of...flat as a character. No wonder she was surprised to see that Max Valentine was looking at her. I was expecting more to come of the issue with the daughter she was forced to put up for adoption. I didn't understand the casual attitude everyone had with the husbands or ex-husbands of her clients assaulting her...like it was just another day at the office. This book completely skipped over the whole "mystery-photo-found-in-Dad's-closet" situation. And I also didn't really buy the ease with which she not only adopted the two daughters of her deceased client, but the ease with which she was became a judge, all of which happened over the course of about 4 months.
Maybe things just move faster in Minnesota?
I don't really like when everything just works out perfectly for the smoothest HEA's ever. I don't read romantic fiction for realism, but this was all wrapped up too neatly and quickly for my taste.
Yes, that Max Valentine. The tall, handsome and super successful lawyer that every woman at the firm is trying to get her hands on.
Well, every woman except Della. Okay, well, she does think he’s hot, but she’s more interested in making partner than making out with Max. Or anyone else. But that doesn’t matter. Because Max Valentine would never look at her.
Her career dreams are shattered when she gets fired unexpectedly. Della doesn’t know who she is without her work. With no clue what else to do, she moves back to her home town and rents an old Victorian home.
And she feels… free. She stops dying her hair. She wears whatever she likes. She starts finding a new kind of joy in her life.
Until she looks up and sees Max Valentine is looking at her. Really looking. But he couldn’t be, could he? She thinks maybe he wants a fling. Maybe she’s just the nearest woman.
But she’s wrong.
Max can see the real Della. And he would like to do much more than look. Because he’s convinced he’s looking at the love of his life.
If only he could convince Della of that.
Max Valentine is Looking at You is book three in the Hart Sisters Series, a heartfelt series about finding love with just the right amount of steam and stories that will stay with you after you’ve turned the last page.
Della is the eldest of the Hart sisters despite the fact that Evie was the mother figure, and she's been working her behind off at her law firm to make partner. This book starts out with her getting let go because of a shady AF co-worker who had been taking credit for her work, plus he lied to the senior partners about Della before she reported him. Max Valentine is a man at her firm, who finally saw Della, but she doesn't care at this point since she feels like he didn't stand up for her despite him telling her she didn't deserve what happened to her. Anyway, Della goes home and it's not long before Max follows her since he has family in her neck of the woods. They keep circling each other as their chemistry is crazy intense, and while Della finally gives in, she's not about to enter into any sort of relationship despite the fact that Max Valentine will do anything to make her his. See, Della has some serious demons like Zoey (Seeing Her Pain) did, and it will take a miracle for her to actually open herself up. To see if Max Valentine actually takes down her walls, you know what to do as I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Wow, I thought Zoey was the complicated sister but she doesn’t hold a candle to Della! I mean that in a good way, because Della’s pain and reservations were palpable and totally understandable. She did jump to conclusions the same way Evie did, but her reasons were crystal clear to me. I loved Della and Max together. They were fun and flirty, but there was always that underlying tension of me just wondering when/if Della would blow up this amazing relationship she’d stumbled into. For his part, Max was supportive and kind, he thought she was brilliant and let her shine. I mean, what more could you want in a proper book boyfriend? Watching Della grow beyond her professional achievements was truly a pleasure and I rooted for her all the way. I was worried that this story would go the ‘woe is me’ route but it didn’t. Della was a fully independent woman with demons and flaws that she—mostly—embraced. I loved this story almost as much as Zoey & Gabe’s.
This is the third book in this great series and is Max and Della’s journey. Max is a sexy, tall, dark, successful lawyer, who has worked his way through the women in his office, all except for Della. Della knows Max’s reputation, but she was kept busy working towards becoming partner, until she is dismissed unexpectedly. Needing to regroup Della moves back to her small hometown. Della is taken aback when Max moves in next door to her, and he is certainly noticing her now. Will Max be able to convince Della that she is the woman for him? This is a beautifully written addition to this amazing series, and is a heartfelt story, with emotions, family, humor, witty banter, and love which leads to an entertaining and all-consuming page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Della has had the weight of her family on her shoulders since here mother left her at age 12 but none of them know it. She has faced some hard challenges and now she is coming back to home to start over. Max Valentine didn't know the gorgeous and complicated woman he was working with until she wasn't there anymore, now he is more determined to get her. This was a great story about family secrets and learning to love yourself for who you are now, not what happened in your past. I am truly loving this series and this author. I can't wait for the next surprise that is walking into the Hart Sisters lives.
Loved the story of Della and Max. Della had a lot to deal with growing up from a having a mom walk away from the family, to an unexpected teen pregnancy, to having been forced to put the baby for adoption only to learn that she would never have another child of her own again. But Max Valentine came into her life and made her see that even with bad curve balls, the right relationship can work. He is her rock and their story ends in a HEA. Truly beautiful read.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved finding out more about Della. I couldn't put book down once started.
I loved Della and Max together, they've worked together for years. But didn't really know each other. Until Della loses her job. They find each other again later on when Max has writers block. They have an attraction that grows more.
Keeping to yourself can have it's advantages and disadvantages...
Della has made a life of keeping to herself... sometimes by choice and others not so much. Will she ever find happiness??? Now that her life plan is basically confetti pieces what will ahe do??? Happy reading : )
They knew each other for 10 years. It wasn’t until they no longer worked together that Max felt more for Della. Unbeknownst to them Max’s aunt lives in Della’s hometown where she moved back too. They do end up together with a HEA.
I was not expecting to read something so moving or deeply emotional. Books like these are usually not my thing. I prefer romances where everything is perfect and everyone is "happy", but oh my god! The things that have happened in her life, *sigh*. I wanted to cry and I hate crying, but it was so good, so worth it. Read this, let it pull on your emotions a little, and fall in love with Max. Please!
