A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

The Gangster is the second book in C.S. Poe’s excellent Magic and Steam series. I went crazy for the first book in this series, The Engineer, so I was so excited to jump back into this steampunk world for the second book. Poe does such a wonderful job creating an immersive world here and, as much as I enjoyed the first book’s setting in the old west, I really enjoyed seeing New York City reimagined. There is a great sense of life in the city in the 1880s, with th

I was so excited to get my hands on this book!!! OMG, Ms Poe did not disappoint! Fast paced, emotionally intense story of magic, betrayal and New Year's Eve expectations gone awry. Gillian Hamilton and Constantine Gunner meet in New York as promised but what starts as happy reunion quickly turns into a nightmare for both men - Gillian is in danger, Gillian's past threatens to unravel the careful life he has built and the agency is slightly in shambles. But never fear: Gunner the Deadly is there ...more

All I can say is WOW! I loved this book! This world that C.S. Poe has created is truly amazing. The first book in this series was good but it was really only a glimpse into what life is really like in NYC for Gillian Hamilton. I have never read steampunk before this series and I think because of this book I am totally ruined for any other steampunk books out there.

Gillian is such a strong character with a deep, dark secret that is hinted at throughout the book. He feels he isn’t worthy of love
Wow. I loved this book. Steampunk / alternate universe? Yup. Another case involving magic and destruction and death, plus elemental ammunition and aether bullets? Of course.

The plot is top-notch, with a mysterious super villain and the introduction of mechanical men equipped with Gatling guns for hands, and bodies reinforced with pressure tubes, iron and bronze. The action is densely constructed and unbearably suspenseful. But ... the pulse of the story is the continuance of this undefinable at

I don’t usually read steampunk so this was an entirely different kind of book for me and I completely loved it! This one follows after book one with Gunner rolling into town with his big gun and smoky voice just in time to help out Gillian as a new gangster rises in the underbelly of New York. I’m really enjoying this series the love between these unlikely guys is beautiful, there’s action and adventure and creepy awesome metal monstrosities threatening the peace. I can not wait for the next boo ...more

Let me start by saying I utterly adore Gillian, his depth of emotion and vulnerability and bravery, yet powerful and unstoppable. And Gunner the Deadly is his perfect match, dangerous and brutally honest and has Gillian's back one-hundred percent. The story starts in a burst of magic and machinery, action and tension mounting inside absolutely believable world-building. The magic used in The Gangster is like nothing I've ever seen before. My heart pounded as I read, me breathless as the story ra ...more

Gillian Hamilton, Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Magic and Steam hopes he still has plans with Constantine, aka Gunner the Deadly, most dangerous and wanted gangster. The plan is to bring in the New Year and start 1882 off right. But best laid plans get side tracked when Gillian meets with his boss, FBMS Director Loren Moore.

Plans get a little delayed and Gillian is late picking up Gunner at the station. Being late sets Gillian to worry but low and behold Constantine has kept his promi
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely adored this novel. "The Gangster" is wonderful, compelling, heartstopping and soul-wrenching. It's the perfect kind of sequel and I already know it will be one of my favourite reads of the year.
I loved "The Engineer", even with its short length, and I couldn't wait to read about Gunner and Gillian again. "The Gangster" does not disappoint. The stakes are up for our favourite lawman-vigilante duo and in a book packe

5 stars, all the way - Fun, fast-paced steampunk adventure/mystery/romance.

This book blew me away! I quit reading steampunk a long time ago, but Gillian and Gunner have me addicted again.

Honestly, I’m not sure what I loved more - the mystery, the action, the love story? I couldn’t put the book down but read as slowly as I could (voice-over: reader, it wasn’t that slow) just to savor every last bit of it.

In the beginning of the series, Gillian and Gunner were the lawman and the outlaw, with hint

5 Stars!

Special Agent Gillian Hamilton and infamous outlaw Gunner the Deadly have a date to ring the New Year together, only Gillian's work and the appearance of a new threat might put a damper on those plans.

Okay, so I think I can safely say that I couldn't see a lot of what happened in this book coming. There were a few I could, but those related to Gillian? No way, no how, and I loved it! I loved being surprised by him.

I loved Gillian and Constantine together, they really work great togeth

Our favorite steampunk series is back! Gillian and Gunner have reunited in New York City for a quiet, private celebration. Unfortunately for them, the underbelly of New York has other plans! Gillian quickly finds himself between a rock and a hard place. Again. At least this time Gunner's there to provide some help! (Or you know, a sure sharp shot, whichever is needed first!)
The story is incredible and is full of twists and turns. Poe is an artist when it comes to writing about the streets of Ne

Argh! This was a truly fantastic reading! A lot of thrills and romance, a lot of characters' development, and a lot of surprises. And steampunk. God! I love steampunk!

Gillian is such a complex character! We keep learning things about him and at the end of the book, we understand that we have only grazed the surface of his personality and his past. He is deeply hurt and, although he is trying, he struggles to believe that he has the right to be happy. Gunner, with his perfunctory calm that can be

I'd like to start this review by stating that my heart raced so much from the conclusion on this amazing book that I swear I dropped 2 lbs in a day!

In true CS Poe fashion, she delivers not only a unique and fascinating mystery, but also truly outstanding dialog complete with emotional intel and setting description! She builds a world so real its as if you could reach out and touch it. You can see the steam, smell the Black Jack gum on Gunners breath, and feel the atmosphere change as Gillian ca

C.S. Poe has an awesome imagination! Gillian and Gunner are back!! This was fantastic!! Gunner has come to New York to spend New Years with Gillian when Tick Tock strikes! A magical, mechanical man breaks into Gillian’s apartment and tries to kill him. Gunner helps to thwart the attack. The stakes have never been higher!! The world that C.S. Poe has created is amazing and whimsical! The characters have depth. I was anxious reading the story, I never knew what was going to happen next, but I was ...more

The Gangster by C.S. Poe was given in exchange for an honest review. Imagine, New York end of 1881 into 1882. Gillian Hamilton, a federal agent meeting the number one wanted man Gunner the Deadly for New Years Eve. The presence of TicTock and his deadly band of monsters ruins Gillian and Gunner’s date. With the weird new magic and its effect on Gillian as well as his boss Moore finding out who Gillian was dating it was going to be a long few days. I loved this book, it was engaging right for wor ...more

CS Poe’s “The Gangster” manages to swirl together a detective story, a burgeoning romance, a secret past and a coming-out story with steampunk elements to make a very tasty treat. Tremendously powerful ‘caster’ (even more powerful than his agency realizes) detective Gillian Hamilton picks up where he left off with tremendously competent, way-too-observant and handsome outlaw Gunner the Deadly, this time in his home base of late 1800’s alternate-universe ‘magic and steam’ New York City. So very good!

I went into this series knowing nothing about Steampunk, but that ultimately didn't matter, because this book (and it's predecessor) are so well written that I caught on quickly with no trouble at all. The story is exciting, the whodunit kept me guessing, and the two main characters and their developing relationship is so engaging that I am hooked, and I can't wait to see what happens next!
Definitely read the first book in the series before reading this one, and though the whodunit

Ms Poe has produced a gripping story, full of action, pace, but also romantic and oozing vulnerability. She has the knack of drawing readers into her stories, and produces page turners time after time. This story was no exception.

The storyline here is stunning and the characters are awesome. Gillian and Gunnar are compelling personalities, very well written, I love the way their relationship is developing, and how they're growing in confidence in their feelings for one another.

Overall, a well

Exceeded high expectations

This is a hard one to put down so plan accordingly. The action is non-stop with sweet romantic moments interwoven with the Steampunk adventure. The protagonists became two of my favorite characters after I read the first book. The tight writing, humor, well built world, and lovely characters will keep you up all night reading. I forgive C.S. Poe for the emotional anguish caused by the last two lines of The Gangster because they guarantee a Book 3.

I'm a big fan of C.S. Poe, and steampunk is nifty, so this series is right up my alley—and, as I expected, I enjoyed this book very much. While the second book in a series of three (or more?) does tend to sag a bit, I thought the book-specific plot worked quite well, and the central relationship advanced appropriately. Nevertheless, I confess a lot of my interest lies in what happens next (i.e., in book 3), so for me this wasn't quite a five-star read. But that would in no way keep me from recom ...more

The second book in Hamilton and Gunner’s journey is just as exciting as the first.
We are treated to fast paced novel where so much is uncovered and you’re glued to the page.
You flip every thing, learning and absorbing every little detail.
Poe’s love of history is evident as you are transported to the late 19th Century New York City.
The character development is astounding and we become more aware of what Hamilton has gone through and what Gunner can see.

Excellent book. Can’t wait for the next

Love this series!

Action, mystery, steam punk, magic, this series has it all. Love Gillian and Gunner and I love the flow of the story. Just when you think you know the truth of what is going on, the author throws something else at you that demands answers and begging for more. The first book was an excellent teaser of how good I hoped this series would be and the second book is even better! Can't wait for the next book!

I am such a fan of everything C.S. Poe writes. I couldn't wait to get my hands on The Gangster, book 2 in the Magic & Steam Series. I wasn't disappointed!
This author has created such an amazing world that the reader can get lost in.
Gunner and Gillian are back together, caught up in trouble yet again.
Sit back, buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life.
The Gangster is a fast paced, action filled mystery/romance that is a joy to read!

Yes I read an ARC I scored from Poe's FB group. And I guess I'm supposed to say this is impartial, yada, yada, yada, but I'm not! What a fantastic sequel to The Engineer. The author has written a book that has transported me not only to another era but to a steampunk one at that. WOW! Their attention to detail was extraordinary and I was fully immersed in the story and that ending...wait...what...NO!!! Well done and I can’t wait for the next book.

Well! This is a real continuation of the story. Action and excitement, twists and turns, revenge and revelations. The final revelation being the final sentence in the book, completely out of the blue, unanticipated by me, and making me desperate for book 3! I could feel a wail of dismay at the abrupt shock of that ending. I want book 3!
