I'm just a girl in love with literature. My love affair with romance novels started with I was 13 and has flourished into an obsession. I've always been a writer. Even when I was a little girl, I always had a pen and a notebook poised to let something out. You Make Me Better is my first project that will be published and I am STOKED. My goal is to write stories surrounding positive black love, with a little humor tossed in.

If you’re looking for a typical romance novel, this ain't the book you want. The Closer I Get to You was heart wrenching tale about traumatic pasts and healing. This was a beautifully written story about Lou with the damaged soul. Lou has been through some thangs and is deserving of his I don't give AF attitude. There is a lot to unpack in this book so, I'm not going to give a detailed review. This storyline is intense, heartbreaking, and should be read spoiler free. I will say the main characters were phenomenal! Sym and Lou are definitely a couple you will root for. The subject matter was hard to read about but, at the same time, very captivating. The Closer I Get to You was an emotional but, powerful story. I highly recommend everyone read this book.

This was such a beautiful tale. I'm amazed at the way Ashley condensed the layers in this story. Lou's history was horrific, and he existed with his trauma as best he could, but I'm grateful that Symantha and Kenedee were able to play a role in releasing the trauma and grief that clung to him. The epilogue was my favorite part because we were witnessing the growth and the love that developed over the years.

Embracing the future

Damn Ashley Nicole has range when writes. This was another deep heartbreaking story, that definitely ended triumphant.

Symantha was a carefree spirit that was confident with her sexuality and refused to settle down. She was single and enjoyed mingling. She had a big heart and I loved her interactions with her sisters and the kids at the community center. One day she was on her usual prowl and ran into Lou, he was finer than wine but aloof. Their encounter was...memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Lou, sweet Lou. I really didn't think I was going to like this man. He was an as$hole for real. He didn't care about anything, except his Aunt. There was nothing or anyone he cared enough to have feelings for.....not even his own daughter. His childhood trauma had stripped him from the ability to love. He coped by avoiding connections and he thought he wanted to keep it that way. Except Sym intrigued him, he found himself watching her and he was unashamed about it. He was drawn to her for some reason.
A terrible life situation causes him to have to be an active father, definitely against his will. He was not trying and Sym made it be known he needed to try harder. Sym, this wild carefree woman toned her life all the way down to be in their corner. She slowly helped them get more comfortable with each other and encouraged activities for them to interact. Sym literally held Lou's hand as he navigated moving beyond his past. She was so careful with him. Very intentional with her actions and waited for him to do the work for them to be together. This story was short, but extremely layered, and sadly beautiful. The epilogue warmed my heart and I was so glad to see Lou happily loving his family.
Damn such a good read. I absolutely wanted to experience more with them.

I went in expecting a romance and got sucker punched in the gut. This story took me through a range of emotions. The story had some romantic elements but I don’t consider it a true romance. With that being said this book has a few triggers to consider: child abuse, rape and suicide.

Lou is suffering from so much childhood trauma and he is literally surviving one day at a time. Even though he went to counseling for years he still can’t seem to escape his past demons. Lou doesn’t care about anyone or anything. He’s cold, aloof, unable and unwilling to form connections. He has one person, his aunt Bert that he cares about and will listen to but sometimes even she can’t get through to him. Samantha is just the opposite. She’s happy, full of life and living life on her own terms. She meets Lou in a neighborhood bar, they hook up and experience is underwhelming. Sym can tell that there’s something going on with Lou and that he self sabotaged their experience. Even though the experience was bad, they are both intrigued with each other. They part ways neither having anything to say to the other. When they finally connect again it’s out of concern for Lou’s daughter Kenedee. Sym takes a chance with Lou, becoming a close friend, helping him work through his past traumas and most importantly helping him form a connection with his daughter.

This had tremendous depth and so many layers. The characters were beautifully written and the story line was intriguing and one I hadn’t read before. I loved how self aware Lou was about himself and his issues and that he didn’t shy away from the work he had to do to get better. I loved everything about this book and didn’t want it to end.

Lou x Symantha

The way the story pulled at my heartstrings it was not even necessary. The entire time I was on the edge of my seat to learn about Lou's trauma. And what trauma it was. Poor guy. My entire body was itching to hug him. Nobody is more deserving of a hug or of love than Lou. I honestly do not know how to review this book. And clearly I'm late to the party but I will say to those who have not read this, absolutely most definitely read this. Read with caution, but definitely read this. It was an excellent story. I loved every second of it.
That's how I like my stories. It's going to sound weird, but I like my characters flawed, broken, traumatized if you will. But it has to come to a full circle with healing, redemption reconciliation, reparation and everything.

WOW….This Was Beautifully Written

This story is a slow burn love story, but it’s a story of trauma and eventually healing. Sym basically taught Lou how to love. I’m so happy that Lou actually was eager to do the work it took for his healing with himself and his daughter. I can’t say enough about this story….AMAZING!

WOW. This was such a beautiful story. I can’t even imagine going through what Lou did. It breaks my heart to know there are so many others in his predicament. There are some sick people out here.

A Layered Classic

The Author does an amazing job of creating captivating characters that reel you in immediately. I fell in love with this journey of discovery of love & self, healing, and compassion. There’s some heavy content in this book but AshleyNicole does a great job of addressing/unpacking it. I enjoy black love stories with depth and this book didn’t disappoint. I did not want this book to end, this is the kind of book that makes you binge read the author’s entire catalog. This is the kind of book that makes you miss the characters when the book ends.

This author is multi-talented with her pen game. While most books will discuss the abuse/molestation of females, this book centered on the healing of a man who endured abuse at a young age and the fallout of it. He was so cold, unfeeling, and disconnected to the point that he couldn't love his 15 year old daughter. The only woman he loved and respected was his Aunt Bertha. What he endured was beyond reprehensible and the way his therapist Tarum, his daughter Kenedee, and eventually his lover Symantha brought him to his healing was beautiful to watch. This story was emotional and heart-rending. To watch Lou transformed was a definite character development strength of this book. Well done!

This book definitely pulled at all my emotions. The author took her time building Lou up then peeled his layers back one by one so that we could understand him. It was painfully beautiful to read! I hight recommend this book.

Wow… some books you know will just stick with you, and this is one. I feel like I haven’t written a review in a while, but this story warrants some feedback.

I bought this on a whim during one of her previous paperback sales and didn’t realize the gem I had on my shelf. This is not a generic romance… it’s a full story that happens to have romance in.

Talk about character development. I had ideas of what was happening and being hinted at early on, but my… this runs too deep. I had to pause reading quite a few times.

The intimacy. The growth… *chef’s kiss*
It’s safe to say Lou stole my heart and the whole little family dynamic that formed.

Definitely recommend.

*** Possible Spoilers***

Ashley Nicole’s ability to show you the depths of love in the most vulnerable ways in UNMATCHED. I had no idea what to expect going into this read and I was blown away in the best way possible. Lou’s trauma was unlike anything I’ve ever read. Wow!!! His trauma was deep, had to be to not want anything to do with his own child. As I read and the layers were peeled back I never could have prepared myself for what was revealed. If it’s one thing I’m going to do reading an Ashley Nicole books is cry lol and I’ve come to accept that. This was a story of love and healing in the most patient and purest form.

Sym was exactly what Lou and Kenedee needed. She was such a free spirit living life on her own terms and the way she inserted herself into their lives in the most delicate way possible was refreshing.

Aunt Bert was such an amazing soul and she did her best to be what Lou needed in the most trying times of his life.

I loved Sym, Taryn and their moms relationship. So often do we read or experience strained mother daughter relationships and this was the exact opposite. Having such an organic, healing relationship with her mom in my opinion, allowed Sym to give that same healed, organic love to Kenedee and Lou.

This story will sit with me for a long time. I’m looking forward to diving into Taryn’s story.

This was amazing. I read it in one day (not in one sitting, because I needed to process... things). So many reviews mentioned tears so I tried to thug it out, but she got me. I had to break out the tissues. Whew! AshleyNicole never *ever* disappoints, but this? This wasn’t just a star, it was a supernova.

This was a different approach for this author and very well written. It explores a much deeper issue of accepting and loving a victim through recovery and behind.
The depth and extent of pain Lou suffered was present in every aspect of his life. Thank Gid he had Aunt Bert, Kenedy, and Sym. But he still was able to reach and help others through volunteering. Sym was extremely patient and wanted nothing more than to help Lou and Kenedee.

❤️❤️

Very emotional but powerful story. I was so frustrated with Lou in the beginning because I couldn’t believe someone could be so Closed off and uncaring. It was frustrating and heartbreaking at the same time. The power of therapy and especially healing is Essential. It was amazing being a part of the journey

This was the kind of slow burn that gently pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Lou has spent years in quiet pain, choosing to live life alone and disconnected—even from his own daughter. Then came Symantha. Her patience, steady presence, and the way she truly saw Lou… it was powerful and beautiful. His therapy sessions were some of my favorite parts—so real and vulnerable (when Lou opened up), it felt like I was right there with him. This story was tender, emotional, and healing. 🤎

Listen AshleyNicole has quickly moved up on my favorite authors list as this woman comes with the 🔥 each and every time but this Closer I Get To You tho 🔥 🔥 🔥.

Synopsis…Lou on the surface you would say is a heartless man who doesn’t care about anyone or anything due to the trauma he experienced in his childhood. His daughter needs a place to live due to the unexpected loss of her mother and Lou is not having it as he could careless about what his daughter is going through. But Lou can’t seem to keep his distance from Symantha who he just seems to be drawn to. Symantha is living her best life, she is carefree, and does not care about having any type of relationship goals as she just wants to one night em and leave em but Lou is a mystery to her and she just can’t help exploring that mystery and seeing what Lou is all about.

When I say this book is 🔥 I mean it. AshleyNicoles hero’s and heroines have character and depth and I love that about her books. Lou had me hating him…I was like “WTF Lou really” for the first couple of chapters but then there was a turn and you realized damn Lou must have really gone through some trauma. At that point I had to prevent myself from looking ahead to get the answers I was seeking.

I loved how Lou’s daughter would not just sit back and let him be disconnected from him she wanted her father and she we going to push in her own way until she got what she needed from him because he was her only parent left. When Lou took his daughter to work out for the first time I cried real tears I mean that was just so emotional to me. It was so good to see their father daughter relationship shift as Lou continued to get the help he needed.

Symantha was my girl, she was living her life and loving it until she met Lou. I loved how much patience she had with Lou as he worked through his trauma and never once did she judge him. When Lou finally opened up about his childhood I again cried real tears because it was just too much.

This book just made me think about how many people have suffered trauma in their childhood and live their life in their own little shell not caring about anything going on around them. This book had me in my feeling the entire time I was reading it. Ashley said this was a slow burn and she was right but it was so necessary because this was a deep one. I found myself not really even caring about the love story as much as I cared about Lou getting help and Symantha being there as his friend above all else. It actually made the romance part that much better when you finally got to it.

If you don’t mind shedding a couple of tears while you read and you need a book that is not your average love story I highly highly recommend this book! Happy Reading!!!

Lou and Symantha...darkly beautiful

I borrowed this book, and then, after reading it, I bought it. Yes, 'The Closer I Get To You' is that good.

The romance takes a backseat to the other elements in this book.

This is in no one your typical romance novel. This story is a fictional account of living with childhood trauma, and the avenues that are available to overcoming them. Therapy, a desire to change, and understanding from those who care, are all elements this story addresses.

The Closer I Get To You is my fifth AshleyNicole book. I enjoyed the other books, and look forward to going through her catalog, but this one is in a class all by itself. Lou was written with such care. He's a hero/character like I've never read before. He is unapologetically cold, distant and uncaring. It's clear, early in the story, that his behavior has to do with abuse and/or neglect that he suffered as a child.

Lou cared only about his Aunt Bert. He kept everyone and everything else at arms length. His aunt makes him agree to therapy, and that's where we begin to learn why Lou is the way he is. Tamra was one of the best therapists I've ever read in fiction. Her care and insight was brilliant. The slow building relationship between Lou and his daughter, Kenedee, and his friendship/relationship with Symantha, gives real dimensions and depth to this beautiful story. I think that saying anything else ruins the story, so I'll just say that if I could give this book more than five stars, I would.

That was WOW 😳!!! Deserved more than 5 ⭐️

Ok so yeah, this was (speechless and drum 🥁 roll)so good and so sweet. MS. Nicole you came back swinging and put your foot all the way in this story.
Symantha, man girlfriend you are GOOOODDDDDD.... I mean, your commitment, loyalty and live got you the best life ever with your soul mate and all it took was for you to be patient and strong and perfect.
Lou “Kenan” OMG! Boy you are it. The spitting definition to how a man can be as emotional unstable and as sweet as can be when all issues have been opened, dealt with and put to rest.
This story was about how a young lady with a heart of gold, non judgmental being and very strong was able to guide, navigate the wonderfulness out of a man who was lost for a while. It was an emotional wreck but oh so worth reading about it for it touches about therapy, sexual harassment from the closest person there to lives d protect you to finding oneself and unconditional love. There were no unnecessary drama and no baby mama or scorned lover except for Willie but it was real life issues that was being discussed, such as GOD and faith, individual faith.
Truly a work of heart and was so glad that I read it now where then of a bad year could finished nicely so the new year could start out good.
Now Willie had got to go as well as SHE. Tamra was the best and Taryn was cute while Keneedee was a sweet just like Aunt Bert.
So go, grab your favorite drink, patience and understanding because not you will need these, you will enjoy it as much, I promise.

What a heart wrenching, yet beautiful story! Where do I begin? I loved Sym! I laughed out loud during the interactions with her sister. She is fun, educated, has a great job, and unashamed of being sexual. But, she was not trying to hear about committing to a man. Nope! One and done! However, she continually sees this man with sad eyes, that intrigues her. Lou! One could tell right away, that there was some deep ish that happened to him. You could almost feel it through the pages, with his actions and interactions with other people. As we began to learn more of his story, my heart shattered more and more! When Kenedee entered his life, I thought that would push him over the edge. But, Sym eased herself into their lives and became the conduit of healing for the both of them. The patience, energy, care and concern that she displayed for Lou, and assisting him in dealing with all of his trauma was amazing! For Lou, to have trust in Sym to allow her to do things to and with him, although he was terrified was just everything! Their connection and the slow burn of their friendship and love was a sight to behold! Amazing read! ♥👍👍👍

A journey from horror to healing beautifully told!

AN cautioned we weren’t gonna like Lou and I immediately saw why but she skillfully hinted very early on that heartbreaking pain was the reason why (which is different from just being a d&*k). I knew from other stories that it was gonna be a doozy but man when it was revealed I was speechless and unprepared. But she mercifully began giving the glimmers of hope and it was a beautiful ride to watch the intimacy slowly develop btwn Lou and Sym and Lou’s gradual healing taking place (shout out to Tamra!) I loved every single thing about Sym - her light and energy jumped off the page. Loved how she came into this family and that her healing touch started with a focus on Kennedee rather than Lou. There was SO much heavy in this story but AN masterfully wove this tale with enough humor, caring and tenderness that I never felt like I was drowning in it and enjoyed the ride all the way through. EXCELLENT job!!

This is one of those stories that stay with you for a while. “The Closer I Get to You” definitely had me on an emotional roller coaster. In the beginning, I definitely could not stand Lou but by the end I was definitely Team Lou! When I tell you he been through some shit, he went through some shit. Symantha was a godsend. I loved her energy, heart, and patience throughout the book. I was amazed at how compassionate she was with Lou even when he was emotionally vacant and withdrawn! I still find myself thinking about Lou and his daughter and what all they went through. This book is a must read!!!

Beautifully done!

This book was definitely outside the realm of what I would normally expect from an AshleyNicole novel! But I must say, it was a journey of healing, growth, and acceptance that I was humbled to witness! Lou and Sym left me speechless, teary-eyed, and in the end just plain joyful! Very nicely done! Bravo AshleyNicole!

This was a beautiful story!!! It’s so refreshing to read a good book with no grammatical errors!!! The story was sad but amazing…I knew Lou had issues but never imagined his mother was molesting her kids…Then when he said he didn’t know if his siblings were his daughters or his nieces I was out done.

Heal Me

***Trigger Warning*** This book deals with child abuse, rape, suicide, and other topics that could be very triggering.

This was so good. Once I realized that there was childhood trauma, I started NOT to read this, yet I'm so glad I did. I loved getting to know Lou and Sym. Boy, if there were ever 2 people who were made for each other, it's these 2.

Heart breaking doesn't even begin tho describe how I felt for Lou; just WOW 😢. I can't even wrap my mind around a child being abused, let alone the way he and his older brother were by their own mother; WHO DOES THAT🤔! Then the trauma from all that he endured with his brother; I was surprised Lou was even able to function as an adult. Yikes😬. I loved that his Aunt Bertha mopped the floor with his nasty and vile mother; just disgusting. I'm glad Lou had his Aunt and Uncle to help him in his dire time of need. At first, I was ready to write Lou off when it came to his daughter, Kenedee, yet knew I needed to read more to get to the root; even that was a bit much. Again, I'm not sure how Lou was able to function as an adult. I am glad that Kenedee was open and honest with Lou about her feelings. I'm also glad his Aunt Bertha gave him the ultimatum she did. Lou's therapist, Tamra was so great. She wanted to truly help him and she did it in a way that was at his pace, yet comforting along the way. He needed all of what she gave him. I think that with all the help he was getting from his therapist, it better helped him to help Pierre, the young boy from the rec center. I'm glad Lou could see Pierre's pain, yet just listen and be a comfort, something Lou needed when he was that age, yet didn't have. That was a nice added touch to break up all the trauma in this book and in Lou's life.

Sym, aka Symantha, was so fun and free; I loved her. I loved how unapologetic she was, yet how caring she was too. I loved that even though they were polar opposites, she supported her sister, Taryn. I love that the author gave us sisters with 2 totally different personalities; yet neither shunned the other for how they chose to live their lives. I also loved their mothers way of loving each of them without judging their choices. These 3 women were fun to read about.

Anyone with a heart for kids, especially if they have none themselves, is always nice to read about. I loved that Sym volunteered at the rec center and encouraged the young kids. That whole mess with her student, Trinity's Uncle Willie was a trip. I mean, dang, get a clue and move on dude🤦🏾‍♀️.

Even with the bad sexual experience that Sym and Lou had, she was still drawn to him and was curious about this enigma of a man. I'm glad she offered to be there for Kenedee and help her relationship with her dad. Then, she started to help Lou and it was beautiful. I loved it all and I'm so glad how tender the author was with their situation.

This was such a great read. As stated before, it has many triggers in it, so read with caution, yet I highly recommend it. Good read.
