This is a story of tradition, legacy and revenge, as a young woman fights for her right to the crown.

I've read several books by this author, mostly on the lighter side of romance, so I was genuinely curious how her foray into the fantasy world would be. As you can see from my rating, it was a worthy risk on her part. While I'm no stranger to the fantasy genre, I sometimes struggle with the complex world building. Thankfully, that is not a key element in this story. Yes, the kingdoms in

Cliffhanger: yes
Genre: YA fantasy

This is only my second read by Rachel Higginson; my first was a rockstar romance titled Never Fall in Love with a Rockstar.. I was excited to read something in the fantasy genre from her since I've been gravitating in that direction in the past year or so. The book cover, trailer, and synopsis really pulled me in and snagged my curiosity, all hinting at

This was my fate. I was meant to rule Elysia and the entire Realm. I was meant to be Queen. And they would not stop me. Whoever they were.

In this story we have Tess, who is living in a monastery with monks that have taken a vow of silence, in a kingdom far away from hers. She's been hiding there for the last eight years, since her family was massacred. Now several signs show her that it's finally time to return back home and reclaim her throne, since Tess is actually a prin

It has been some time since I read a YA fantasy story, but being as it’s Higginson doing the authoring, I was all in. And let me tell you a little was so absolutely fantastic. Higginson picked right back up with this genre like there was no time lost since she last penned one. She delved back in and wrote it, owned it and delivered it. She gave CROWN OF ONE HUNDRED KINGS the perfect amount of fantasy, romance and intrigue to keep my heart happy and my mind content. Written perfect ...more

High fantasy is very much a hit-or-miss for me. The elaborate storytelling and complicated set-up can be hard for me to settle into. I'm happy to say that wasn't the case with Crown of One Hundred Kings. Something about the way Rache Higginson has written this made it feel relatable and understandable - even as she wove a complicated tapestry within the story.

Truly, I think the writing was my favorite thing about this book. I appreciated the attention to detail over the course of Tessana's trave

Gah I loved this book! It was soo soo good!

Fantasy is my jam, especially high fantasy! The adventure, the world building, the characters.. just everything about it, and Rachel Higginson does it fantastically! It has been a hot minute since I devoured a book, but I could NOT put this one down. It sucked me in from the very beginning, and I loved every second of it!

Read this book!

“You are not just a girl, Tessana. You are Tessana Allisand of the House of Extentia, daughter of Fredrix, King of Elysia and Ruler of the Realm. You are a princess. You are a survivor. And now you will take the crown back to your people and show them that you are still alive.”

2020 may be a rough year, but thank goodness for it bringing a new book by Rachel Higginson! Loved this book and I can't wait to see how the rest of the series goes! Tessa and Oliver's friendship brings me j

Tess is 17 and has been hidden away ever since her (royal) family was murdered 8 years ago. She is possession of the 'crown of nine' and one day she feels it is time to travel to her home, Elysia, to claim the throne. Her companion is young Oliver and on their way they also find a young fox kitten Tess adopts. They encounter the Rebel Army and their leader offers Tess protection on her way to Elysia.

The writing is of course, delightful. Rachel Higginson can spin a tale. I enjoyed the story. Tes

I really wanted to like this book. I don’t like to post negative reviews, and I always want to look for the best in everything I read. But when it came to Crown of One Hundred Kings I just didn’t get what I was hoping for. Maybe it’s because I’ve read quite a few books lately that have absolutely blown me away, but personally, I left this story feeling pretty disappointed.

Having a basic fantasy plot, or using well-used character tropes, is absolutely fine but there should also be something more

Wow. I am so glad I was able to get an arc for this. I was seriously captivated by the book, the whole time. I didn’t want to put it down! It has everything you could want adventure, mystery, friendship, romantic tension, everything. Even though this is the first book of the trilogy, there is no cliffhanger, but it does seriously have you wanting more. Tessana was perfect, she is strong and resilient and exactly what you want out of a heroine. All the characters are written wonderfully. I’m drea ...more

I have been waiting for Rachel to write another fantasy series since falling in love with her Star-Crossed one years ago! The level of detail in world building she creates is absolutely phenomenal, and I especially like how she writes characters who are young but not juvenile (if that makes sense). Loved the pace of the book, the character interactions, and the overall storyline. Can't wait for book two! (Big thanks to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.) ...more

I am hooked, now I must wait for the next one.

All I am going to say about this book is that I love Tessana and Taelon and cannot wait to read more about them. Keeping my fingers crossed they find a way to be together and that the uncle gets what he deserves.

Not my favorite story. I love the idea but certain plot points don't seem to match up. And the vibrant characters I'm used to from Rachel's writing aren't in this book. Im hopeful the next book will clean up some of the story and the characters will be built out more and be more believable ...more

This book has such a vibe of something published in 00s that I caught a nostalgic feeling from it. Epic, good/evil, just/unjust… like fantasy was many years ago. I find this kinda cute, even.

The book is okay. You can’t rate her like you rate other fantasy now, serious, complex, overthought. This story is almost fairytale-ish.

So, what do we have here?

High- fantasy is one of my favourite genres of books, mainly because it transfers the reader to a whole other world where the rules tend to be quite different from the rules we live by in the daily life. Twisted and turned and shaping a whole different world in which the reader is immersed, living the life of the characters he/she is reading about. And quite an escape from the ordinary world we are all used to.

World building and setting are two things I focus the most when reading fantasy and hi

Crown of One Hundred Kings [image error] just might be my third YA Fantasy this year and I am absolutely here for it. I'm a huge fan of Rachel Higginson, so once I saw that she was going to release a YA fantasy trilogy, I was absolutely on board. And there's just a little bit of romance to keep my romance lovin' self going.

I thought Rachel did a great job with the world-building, there were a couple of times where I blanked out a little bit, but that's what tends to happen to me when I rea

The murder of the royal family of Elysia leaves the little princess, Tessana, in the hands of peaceful monks, trying to find her place in the world. However, her place is not with the monks, it’s on the throne ruling over the nine kingdoms. Tessa’s birthright makes her the only one who can bring peace to the world but there is evil who wants to finish the job they failed when they let her get away in the first place.

With the Crown of Nine that rules over the realm and a sidekick named Ol

I really missed having a Rachel Higginson book in my life. I haven't really felt like reading much at all this year and when I do read it feels more like a chore than a desire. Then I get Rachel's newest book and I reminded again why I loved reading!

Rachel's writing just instantly draws you into this new world. She writes such compelling storylines and characters that you can but help instantly fall in love (or hate) with. A story about loss, struggle, and finding your destiny against all odds.

4-4.5 stars. Tessa Allisand is a long way from home, but after nearly 8 years, it's finally time to go back to her kingdom of Elysia. She needs to reclaim her place on the throne or her kingdom will continue to suffer, as will those around it. She lost her family and was saved by Taelon Treskinat, a prince from a fellow kingdom and he used to be her betrothed. But all of that is in the past and the future is different now that Tessa is the only heir for her family's crown.

This is the first young adult book that i have read by this author and i am certainly not disappointed. Along with a brilliantly written story, the world building is credible enough to make it feel real.

I will say that I was intrigued when reading the synopsis to this one when it popped up my Instagram feed one day and I am happy to say that I pleasantly enjoyed the heck out of this story!

First, I was shocked when the book arrived as I was not expecting it to be so short therefore the story was very fast paced and I wished for more in depth build into Tessana’s relationship with the Rebel King. But also due to the circumstances the insta love was expected and I really found it sweet.

Fantasy books can sometimes be either hit or miss and this author has most definitely written a HIT !!!
This is a story set in a time when white and black magic could still hold power, when good and evil clashed daily and when good really had to fight intense battles just to prevail.
This is the story of a Princess, legacy, tradition and revenge. A princess determined to take the crown that is rightfully hers, and to take up the legacy left by her Assassinated father and family.

This story is one that will wrap you up and envelope you into the world that the author has created. I was blown away at the concept. It was high paced, quick wit and just the right amount of drama that royalty would have in a story like this. As we follow Tess through her journey, how she comes across Taelon and so much more, you are tossed into this world of intrigue, passion and unique characters that will make you keep your wits about you.

I have read this authors comedies, romance, thrills and chills but none of it prepared me for her ability to do fantasy. Meet her serious yet humorous pair of misfits as they head towards her destiny. Her handy (not really) not really a monk friend of 8 years is truly her comedic side kick who tries his best to keep her sarcasm at minimum at least well enough to attempt to keep her in check. it usually doesn't work. Her journey is filled with action new friends and betrayal of the worst kind. It ...more

I so enjoy Rachel's writing and was excited to get this new series from her! I was very quickly lost in Tess's life. She learns things of a past and it send her on a quest. Something she was born to do. She must survive a world in which she does not know. Her monk-in-training bodyguard was more of a support for her than one to stop anyone. But he cared for Tess and watched her back! These two were thick as thieves and they suddenly had to depend on others in their journey. I was completely capti ...more

I was so excited to get a ARC copy of this book!! I have always really enjoyed Rachel's book series and I have read pretty much all of them, Her gift of crossing different stories and genres is so exciting and fun! What I enjoy about this beginning series is what Rachel is gifted in doing. Her gift is to get you to really care about the main character and then fall in love with her experience as well. “Tessana, you are by far the most exquisite sight I have ever beheld. I believe I will never forget you on that cliff. I will never lose the image of your hair blowing in the breeze, your cape stretched out behind you, your arms flung to the side. I am afraid you have so imprinted this image in my mind that I will compare all other beauty to you. You stole my breath, my reason. You are enchanting. Beyond anything I could have imagined you would become.” 0 likes
