It was the trip of a lifetime…
until someone ended up dead.

When four couples receive invitations to try out a luxury island resort, they are excited for a week of relaxation and reconnecting.

For some, it’s the honeymoon they never had the chance to take.
For others, it’s a last-ditch attempt to save their crumbling marriage.

But when one of the group members ends up dead on the night of a terrible storm, what was once a paradise soon becomes a prison.

Trapped on the island with no cell phone service and no means of escape, the couples fear the worst. What exactly happened to their friend? And could they be next?

Determined to learn the truth, the couples search for answers, but only discover more secrets. Friendships, loyalties, and marriages are put to the ultimate test as they grapple to decide who to trust and who could be a threat.

Will they make it off the island? Or will the perfect getaway turn into their last?

It was the trip of a lifetime...

Until someone ended up dead.

The Perfect Getaway
by Kiersten Modglin

My review:

Well now......finally a four star thriller!

I am writing this review in between TV shows so forgive me for not doing a plot recap.

You don't really need one, do you? You can guess at the delicious plot can't you?

In case you can't....

A group of friends get a free dream vacation to an exotic island? Where they get to sleep in thatched huts, inches away from the glimmering turquoise Tidewaters of the ocean? And all they have to do is.....write a review.

I would go! I need a vacation..can we all admit on here that EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US.....really really REALLY needs a vacation?

And if we can't get one....this writer has created a virtual one for us!

Sigh. Nothing is ever that simple though.

What if one of the friends....dies...on the island? MURDERED PERHAPS? And there is a storm. Yes, stormy weather, no cell service and lots of secrets.

OK... if your still with me..read it! It's a fun mystery.

I have been so let down lately with my thrillers. The last few..nothing seems to make it past a three in the thriller genre. This one however did.

I do adore mysteries that are languid and take place on exotic tropical islands. Most of the time, these novels are not written well.

This one was. It was confusing as heck..in a good way...and chances are you will read it in one sitting...and you will never ever figure it all out. You just can't. There isn't a way.

Not that it was perfect. I found one scene toward the end, way to brutal. I am sure anyone who has read this knows which one it is. It is a scene remembered in flashback and it upset me so much I almost docked the book a star but I am so happy to have found a good thriller, I just could not do that.

What was REALLY cool is that although there was a large group of characters, I had no trouble knowing who was who. Each one of them had their own personality. I really appreciated that.

And it was not overly long. It's not simplistic. Yet it is not TO convoluted either. And I love the feeling of slowly creeping danger....Danger Will Robinson! Those thrillers, with the gradual building of mood, are just my favorite types.

This one reminded me a bit of "The last resort" but this one was worlds better.

So I would recommend this to all thriller fans who want a bit of an exotic location for their next mystery. It's a quick, fun and mysterious read that wont bore you. Four stars from me.

You will NEVER see the twist coming in this clever and engaging thriller.
From the very beginning, I became invested in the dynamic characters, and quickly discovered my favourite character Modglin has EVER created. The plot was woven together so well, and as pieces started coming into place, the scene was set, and it was impossible to pull me from the pages.
The island atmosphere transports you to paradise along with the guests, but it isn't long before a storm shakes them to their core, and someone ends up dead. Modglin does an excellent job of making the tension palpable as escape seems futile. All the while, you're rooting for the guests to discover the truth so they don't succumb to the same fate. I tried to decide who was innocent and who was guilty, but it kept me guessing until the very end!
Captivating, twisted, and suspenseful, The Perfect Getaway is the perfect way to spend a cozy afternoon and will keep you reading until the jaw-dropping conclusion.

I was hooked until about 60% in snd then it just fell apart. It felt very rushed, unbelievable and it had the feel of an episode of Scooby Doo.

Five couples go on an all expenses paid trip to an exotic Caribbean island, hoping that it would be a memorable one. But is there more to the trip than just a trail offer, thanks to Andy's new girlfriend Emily. By the fifth chapter, you get to know that it does turn out to be an unforgettable getaway, but for all the wrong reasons. Ofcourse there is going to be drama and complications, given that the couples are in different stages of their relationships. What I didn't expect was secrets and mystery disappearances.

The book began well and definitely was an exciting read, filled with suspense and twists. I felt like there was a slight lag towards the end, yet it didn't do anything to disrupt the reading much. I did not see the final twist coming. Overall, Kiersten has nailed the plot twists with the right elements and an excellent narrative that turned out to be an exciting thriller.

I am clearly in the minority here. As much as I enjoyed her other book, “I said yes,” I just didn’t like this one at all. I thought it was shallow but my biggest issue was it was so confusing. Each chapter was told from a different character’s viewpoint and I kept forgetting whose viewpoint we were listening to and then she had four different couples and trying to keep the different couple’s straight like who is with whom and who had an affair with whom and who was telling the particular chapter at that time was just driving me nuts. It was all
Over the place. It was just a typical getaway/murder on an island story that’s been told 1 million times. None of the characters were likable and I didn’t find the ending or any of the twists super spectacular. I really just didn’t like it at all.

It started a little slow, setting up the story. Once they reached the resort, the pace picked up and kept steady until the end. It's not a very long book, I read it in a couple of afternoons.

This is told in multiple POV, which was a problem because they all sounded the same. Male or female made little difference, I kept having to check which character's chapter I was on.

The twist as to who the killer was genuinely surprised me, the twist after that went a bit too far, too convoluted!

One day I’m going to learn, that Kiersten will always have a twist to her twists lol. As I continue my journey through her catalogue, I continue to allow myself to be shocked but I should know better by now.

I really enjoyed this story of 4 couples that receive a free trip to a beautiful island as part of their marketing strategy. These couples have been friends for several years, and when their single friend begins to date a young social media influencer, she nominates them all to win this trip. The couples arrive on the island, it appears to be nothing short of amazing, but when one of their group members turns up dead, everyone has so many questions as they are unsure if this was an accident or murder. The secrets between these couples and old friends goes back decades, and EVERYTHING was revealed during this get away. Will these couples & friends survive all of the events that have occurred?

I always enjoy this author’s writing style and highly recommend this book. I listened to the audio version and enjoy the male and female narrators for the characters. Very enjoyable story!

First time with this author. This book was hard for me to get into as there were so many people and I didn't care. I started to put it aside but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. It's actually pretty suspenseful. There are four couples and learning how they all relate to one another and who they are takes a bit of patience. But it's a pretty good read once you get a feel for them. A bit far fetched but still good. Three stars.

I didn't think I'd be able to get into it because there were so many characters and I'll admit, I still got people mixed up sometimes but I ended up loving the story and becoming invested in the characters, even the ones whose names I mixed up. Oop! I'm partial to "stuck on an island" stories and this one definitely had a shocking twist I didn't expect, and it left a bad taste in my mouth for a minute but I got over it.

Kiersten Modglin took me on a 2 day “getaway” and man it was spectacularly mind-blowing!!
I have come to expect twists and surprises from this author – but this one has topped them all. I was truly shocked in awe when I finished the novel.
Who does not want a week away on a private island with some of your closest friends ? Well it is all fun and games until the secrets come up and then when someone winds up dead…. well that takes this riveting thriller in a different direction and this is no longer the relaxing vacation that everyone expected. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire twisted ride !!!

I received a copy of this in exchange for fair and honest review.

The Perfect Getaway by Kiersten Modglin was a fast-paced, addictive read!

Four couples receive exclusive invitations to a once-in-a-lifetime vacation at a luxury island resort. While some are hesitant to go—because of kids, work, or life—they eventually decide to take the trip.

At first, everything feels like paradise... until a storm hits and one of the friends ends up dead. As the group searches for answers, secrets begin to unravel—ones that make you question how well they really know each other.

This was a gripping, fast-paced thriller that was hard to put down. Full of twists and tension, it definitely kept me hooked

I just want to sit down with KMod and pick her brain! How in the world does she manipulate my mind in these ways? I have to admit as I was reading this book I was sure I knew how it was going to end. I knew who would be behind the twists and from the beginning I didn’t think there was any way I could NOT predict the ending. Well, jokes on me, I audibly let out a “WHAT THE DAMN HELL!” at the ending not just once, but twice. I then immediately took a 35 minute nap to recover. What a perfect read to kick off 2022! All hail the queen of twists!

I've read a lot of this author's books and her books are always full of unexpected twist and turns, so I always look forward to a new release from her! I received an ARC of this book and started reading it as soon as I did! After reading, I can say that I enjoyed this book a lot! The plot developed at the perfect pace and it kept me intrigued and wanting to find out what was going to happen next! There was also plenty of mystery and suspense, which I was expecting! I do have to be honest and say that I was maybe expecting there to be more murders, but then a big secret was revealed that made the plot made sense and then more secrets came out and everything in the plot started to make sense and connect! There was some romance in the plot as well, which I loved! The characters were also amazing and made the plot even better! There were several different female characters in this book and they included Laura, Megan, Natasha, and Emily! I found all the women quite intriguing because there was so much going on between them and they were hiding things! I did like them all though and I could see why they were friends! Brad, Nick, Jaren, and Andy, were all the love interests/husbands of the female characters! Like the women, I actually wasn't sure who I could trust with the guys because some had more to hide than others and I did like some of the guys more than others, but I won't say much more lol! I will say that I was surprised by who the bad person was and it really could have been any of the women or men! This book was also written from several different point of views, and I have to be honest and say that I'm normally not a fan of books that are written from more than two different point of views! It made sense for this book to be written from all different point of views because all the couples were going through different issues and there was a lot going on in the plot! I did enjoy getting to know the characters more and it definitely allowed for more things to happen in the plot and added to the mystery element! I can also completely understand why this book is a standalone! The plot was wrapped up and all the questions raised were answered and The ending was also insane and took me a bit by surprise! It was a nice surprise though and one that I wasn't expecting! I now can't wait to see what this author is going to release next! She always has amazing twists in her books that I never expect, so I can't wait to see what she's going to release next! I'll definitely be anticipating its release! I can't wait to check out her books that I haven't read yet as well! The cover for this book is also perfect for the book and it really suits the title and the relaxation of being on holiday! I love how well it suits the book and it would draw me to the book as well if I didn't already know the author's name! Big thank you to Kiersten for an ARC of The Perfect Getaway!

Spoiler Alert. Clearly, I'm in the minority and didn't love this book. I just didn't fall for it. Best friends are given a week in paradise by the one person who is murdered? Multiple secrets and affairs between best friends? Not a fan, but I will give Modglin another try in the future just because so many people have raved about her writing.

A spectacular chance to go away to a tropical island, free? Sign me up! Well, until I read this book and now I’m a little leery of free vacations. That is the premise of Kiersten Modglin’s new thriller that has four couples invited to spend a week free on Isla del Amor. Emily is newly attached to Andy; Brad and Laura have been married for a couple of decades and have two daughters; Nick is engaged to Megan; and Natasha and Jaren have been married for over two decades. Each couple has problems and secrets and they all seem to explode like a volcano on the island. I was expecting something to happen to disrupt their dream vacation, but i didn’t expect the event that did occur. Nor did I see coming all of the secrets that each couple had. I enjoyed how the author rolled out the secrets slowly and deliberately, like showing puzzle pieces one at a time. I also enjoyed the difference in each of the characters, making them memorable enough that I could easily put the couple groups together. I especially enjoyed the twists and the surprise ending. I gave the book four stars because there isn’t resolution for all of the couples, and I really wanted to know how each of their stories worked out. I’m a big fan of Modglin’s books and the way she draws me into the story in each book, so quickly that I’m barely aware of how much time has passed while I’m reading. That is the mark of a good book...getting lost in its pages, and that’s what I did in this book. Fans of thrillers and suspense will want to get a copy to devour and enjoy!

The Perfect Getaway by Kiersten Modglin
7h 32m narrated by Gary Tiedemann and Janina Edwards, 312 pages

Genre: Mystery, Thriller > Mystery Thriller, Psychological Thriller; Suspense, Contemporary

Featuring: Couples Trip, Caribbean, Multiple POVs, Influencer, Secrets

Rating as a movie: R for adult content

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️😕

My thoughts: 📱18% 1:23:54 Ch. 10 - I don't know if it's the narrator but Natasha is hilarious. So far I'm loving it. Many of the characters sound similar so it's hard to keep up with who's who.
📱38% 2:54:12 Ch.18 - It's hard to learn all of the characters since the narrators use the same voices for them during their POVs. I know they are capable of using other voices because they sometimes use them when they are saying the other characters' lines, but the main voices are all the same. Then the narrator (book) says, "it's the last night they'll all be alive" at dinner, but here we are the next night, after dinner, after bedtime, and everyone is still alive. 😏🤨😒🙄😕 I don't even know how to feel about it.
📱47% 3:25:48 somewhere in Ch. 20 - I suspected early on who was going to die and I was right. Still waiting for the chill factor.

I'm getting really tired of these Suspense Dramas being labeled as Thrillers, especially as Psychological Thrillers. At this point, it's just a marketing ploy. This one was more drama than suspense. It started okay but went downhill by the halfway point.

Recommend to others?: Maybe, if you like drama, sure; if you're looking for a thriller, skip.

Friends, couples some beginning , some married and need a break from life. All of them get a chance to get away for a week. But that perfect getaway isn't so perfect after all. Another psychological thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat with every page that you turn. This author knows how to write a book that will have you wanting more and will keep you on the edge until the very end.
All of these couples are enjoying their time on the island until something tragic happens. No one knows what to think about what happened and everyone fears the worse. But who is to blame? Who can be trusted? Once the police finally arrive will the truth come out about what happened?
I absolutely loved reading this one. Kept me hooked from page one until the end. I had no idea what had happened and was completely shocked to find out the truth. Never seen it coming. That is how well the story is written. You never can guess who does what or why. Another great psychological thriller from Kiersten. Her thrillers just keep getting better and better. Highly recommend reading this one.

This is perhaps my most favourite plot setting for thrillers, people trapped in isolated places, cutoff from the outside world, and then all the dirty secrets start coming out and people start dropping dead lol.

This was just perfect and really helped my itch for such a read. This was such a compulsive read, I literally couldn't stop reading, and finished it in two days, loved it up until the very end (I thought the ending was a bit cheesy?) and I couldn't see who the culprit was! I now think I should have considering I consume thrillers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner lol, but I was betting me money on someone else for the culprit, and it's always a good thing when it turns out to be someone else! :)

Very much recommended if it's your favourite plot to read too!

Keeps you guessing

This has 4 couples involved and I struggled to remember who was who and who was coupled up. You are bombarded with a lot at the beginning and then have to keep track of each couple. I found this confusing, however i have a bad memory so don’t let that put you off reading this. It’s a who done it type of thriller and It led you to believe several people were suspect. I feel it lost the plot towards the end and was heading to the ridiculous, but it got better when all was revealed. Probably a 3.5 star read for me.

I'm giving this one 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book up until about 75% in, then it seemed to lack...something, I just don't know what. In my opinion, there were too many characters to have to keep up with, but I eventually was able to keep them all straight over halfway through, even though I had to keep going back to check whose chapter it was at the time. The story was a bit far fetched, but it was still a decent read!

If you are looking for a trippy, twisty, you can't put it down and didn't see it coming read, you found it!! I love how I never see it coming when I read Kiersten Modglin, she gets me guessing until the end. What starts out as a fun vacation, quickly ends up going south and things are not as they seem. With a death that makes no sense, the search for the murder finds each couple unable to trust each other as secrets are revealed and The Perfect Getaway fast becomes less "perfect". I highly recommend this read.

3 & 1/2 rounded up. This was a good story with lots of twists and turns. I did feel a bit lost sometimes because of the amount of characters. The author did a good job wrapping it up in the end. I really didn’t like the main character, Laura. I would have liked her to be a bit more caring towards Emily and the news she had for her. But all in all, a good book.
