Merwan Chabane est diplômé de l'École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Après un passage par l'École des Gobelins, il fait ses premières armes dans le milieu du jeu vidéo, mais également en réalisant des story-boards pour différentes séries d'animations.
En 2002, il se fait remarquer avec son film de fin d'études, « Biotope », court-métrage d'animation multi primé qu'il écrit et réalise. Soutenue par le CNC et Arte, cette expérience se poursuit avec la réalisation d'un autre court-métrage d'animation, « Clichés de soirée » sélectionné pour le prix du cartoon d'or 2009.
En 2007, il est contacté pour collaborer au long métrage des « Lascars » en tant que story-boarder.
Il publie en 2009 la bande dessinée « Fausse garde » aux éditions Vents d'Ouest, la version retravaillée et exhaustive de sa première BD « Pankat ».
Puis il publie également chez 12BIS le premier Volume de la saga d'aventure « L'Or et le Sang » qu'il dessine sur une mise en scène de Fabien Bedouel, coécrite par Maurin Defrance et Fabien Nury. Il entame ensuite la création d'albums, seul ou en collaboration, comme avec Bastien Vivès, par exemple.

Aster of Pan is about an outcast in post-Apocalyptic France. Then Pan is threatened by a technologically superior society, they need Aster's help in a game of high stakes dodge ball. It's a bit odd when this changes from a dystopian future comic to a sports manga, but it's fun. The art's great.

A 3.5 stars.
I'm a fan of the art style where digital art is made to seem as traditional art. I love this gouache/watercolor style of digital art. The artwork is excellent.
I did not give this a 5 stars because there could've been better a world-building, the politics/traditions of Pan could've been explored more. There was no character development. The first 25% of the book was clumsy and then you're smacked right into the Hunger Games-like dodge ball contest. The fact that irked me the most was, Juba didn't even explain the rules of the game before the first cycle. Like really? Not even during the journey to the Ceres? and from there it's just the trope of protagonists (namely Aster and Wallis) who never did the thing in their entire life but they're extremely good at it. I mean, the last 60% was a blur because it was so predictable. We could've had Aster's backstory of being un-pan, Juba's backstory of what made him leave Pan and what happened after leaving.
I did like the story's wrap-up. Like how it was all a myth on which the kid made a presentation. But it could've been taken further instead of a standalone.
26-1-2021 edit: So the artwork is all traditional! This led to the lower quality on zoom but I like that it’s traditionally done! :)

We all need more post-apocalyptic dodgeball in our lives.

Gorgeous and expressive art and there is lots going on in the plot (imperialisms, belonging, survival, athleticism, personal and/vs political, environmental destruction, family, independence, and sports tactics). There's a bit of "chosen one" silliness in the plot, and the resolution is a bit too sports movie pat but this is a book with great worldbuilding and fun characters. Well worth reading.

Previously published in two volumes by another publisher, Magnetic Press is doing the right thing in publishing both in one book.



Post-apocalyptic post-nuclear-war France! With apocalyptically appropriate ultra-dodgeball wedged in! (What is it with post-apocalypses and obsessive competitive sports..?)



To be frank, the story isn't that incredible, but the world building is solid and I just love the art in this - a sort of lightly manga-influenced European style. The depictions of bombed out France are vivid, but it's especially the characters that are impressive.



The second half focuses completely on the Rollerball-like apocalypse-dodgeball 'celestial mechanics' . The game being tied to social and political revolution feels forced, and it's a shame that more isn't done with all the worldbuilding.



Still.. the art.. the art, my friends!

Сьогодні розповім вам про ще один мій краундфанд, банд десіне «Aster of Pan» Мервана Чабане, яке спочатку вийшло друком у Франції у видавництві Dargaud, а потім уже світ побачив англомовне видання через збір коштів та друк у видавництві Magnetic Press.

Спершу про видання й бонуси, які мені приїхали із ним. Сама книга дуже якісно зроблена із товстими сторінками. Але найбільш цікавим були для мене заокруглені кутики, які я зустрів уперше в коміксах. Щодо бонусних матеріалів, то у виданні взагалі нічого немає, тільки коротка біографія автора. Ось це справді трішки засмутило. Натомість, усім хто замовив мальопис на Kickstarter прислали багато цікавинок: листівку і збільшену сторінку з малюнками й автографом Мервана, тематичні нашивку, металеву монету, пін та м’ячик, який має безпосередній зв’язок із сюжетом. Воно все виглядає кльово і якісно, офігенний мерч. Тепер потрібно думати, де ці всі смаколики тримати)

Події відбуваються в другій половині цього століття в теперішній Франції. Ми дізнаємось, що це постапокаліптичний світ, який став таким через результат давньої катастрофи, яка призвела до загибелі більшої частини населення та змінила мапу світу. Тут існує зона з високою радіоактивністю, яка, мабуть, є результатом аварії на атомній електростанції або, можливо, ядерної війни. Є велика територія Пан, де люди ведуть відокремлений спосіб життя. Та і взагалі, усе виглядає, що людство повернулися до такого собі племінного способу життя. Також є візуальні та сюжетні натяки, що відбулися певні кліматичні зміни у світі, які призвели до затоплення цілих міст чи створивши можливість вирощувати рис на окраїнах сучасного Парижу. Однак ми не дізнаємось точних деталей того, що сталося і, які події призвели до такої катастрофічної ситуації.

Головною героїнею є Астер, така легковажна до певної міри дівчина, яка не має права називатися жителькою Пану, через те, що вона не є членом цього племені. Це все призводить до того, що ставляться до неї, як до вигнанниці, вона не отримує продовольчих пайків і не має права брати участь у політичних справах Пана. Упродовж історії ми дізнаємось дещо нове про передісторію Астер, що дозволяє трішки сформувати образ цієї героїні. Астер не дуже стурбована таким відстороненим життям поза територією Пану. Але все змінюється, коли мілітаристична нація під назвою Фортуна приходить запропонувати жителям Пану захист, але насправді це банальний ультиматум. Вони повинні віддавати частину врожаю взамін на оборону від зовнішніх піратів та інших агресорів. Але якщо Фортуна почує відмову, то жителі стикнуться із жорстокими й жахливими наслідками, і оборонятися потрібно буде вже від «доброчесної» армії рятівників.

Але знайшовся інший вихід із цієї ситуації, кинути виклик Фортуні в грі, яка дуже схожа на доджбол, але яка допускає досить дикі й жорстокі варіації основних правил. Хоча гра в м’яч виглядає кращим варіантом, але ніхто в Пані не знає, як грати в цю гру, тоді як «Фортуна» прям живе цим різновидом спорту. Тому жителі Пану роблять виняток і запрошують Астер до новоспеченої команди невмілих гравців, через те, що вона має гарну атлетичну форму й найголовніше для того, щоби зберегти гендерну рівновагу в команді (не більше чотирьох гравців однієї статі в команді із семи гравців). Тепер перед ними стоїть кілька складних ігор, які вирішать долю Пану.

Коли сідав читати цей мальопис, то в мене були зовсім інші очікування. Деякі, з них виправдалися, як ось цікавий постапокаліптичний світ, герої та неймовірний малюнок. Але я точно не очікував того, що це будуть такі собі «Голодні ігри». А тим більше весь акцент саме на процесі ігор, яким, таке враження, найбільше приділяється увага. У художньому плані вся ця динаміка зображена прекрасно та просто, коли вже починається третя гра, не так цікаво за нею спостерігати. Процес гри банально набридає. Мені б хотілося більше розкриття героїв, стосунків чи світу. Натомість ці речі відійшли на другорядний план і відчувається, що вони тільки для того, щоби заповнити пробіл між іграми і трішки ввести в курс справ, щоб ми розуміли, що тут взагалі відбувається. Тому від сюжету в мене двоякі враження.

Та насамперед я купував це банд десіне через малюнок Мервана, тому гріх жалітися на сюжет. Те, як художник працює з аквареллю, заворожує. Але крім чудового малюнку, тут присутня хороша робота над розкадруванням, що навіть без тексту прекрасно розумієш усі події. Особливо це можна побачити в динамічних сценах, де Мерван звертає увагу на всі дрібні деталі під час бійок чи ігор. Натомість у такі моменти, як хтось одягається чи герої пливуть затопленим містом, відчуваєш, як час сповільнюється, тому що кількість кадрів, які змальовують цей окремий момент істотно збільшується. Як ви вже зрозуміли, то художня сторона мене сильно захопила і я дістав багато естетичного задоволення під час гортання сторінок мальопису.

Не скажу, що я без ніяких заперечень можу порадити вам це банд десіне до ознайомлення. Але якщо вам подобаються такі літературні твори, як «Голодні ігри», «Той, що біжить лабіринтом» чи «Диверґент», то принципі вперед. Але точно рекомендую через візуальну сторону «Aster of Pan», бо Мерван Чабане тут гідно попрацював і кожна сторінка змушує трішки довше зупинитися, щоб зчитати всі деталі.

Amusing post-apocalyptic romp of a graphic novel about a young outcast named Aster who leads a team to defend her home against an invading force by competing in... dodge ball. Well, it starts as dodge ball, but it escalates from there, and kinda turns into paintball? Whatever, it's fun! Some of the plot doesn't make complete sense, but I decided not to get too hung up on that because I was enjoying Aster and the sheer ludicrousness of the situation so much. It definitely took a bit to get started, but once it did, it was an enjoyable ride.

Je n'avais aucune idée du sujet de l'album sauf que je savais que ce serait de la SF vu la couverture et j'ai tout de suite accrochée que ce soit avec le graphisme ou avec le récit. Les personnages sont sympathiques, le contexte comme je les aime avec des conditions de vie difficiles et il y a beaucoup d'originalité dans l'adaptation du jeu bien connu du ballon prisonnier. J'ai donc passé un excellent moment de lecture :)

Aster of Pan is a beautiful graphic novel set in a post-apocalyptic world. The art throughout the book is fantastic. I really loved how colorful and detailed the world looked. The premise of the story was interesting and unique. It follows a girl named Aster who was born outside the territory of Pan. When an armed delegation from another territory arrives and threatens Pan's resources, a game of Celestial Mechanics is the only way to prevent this. Overall, the story is fun and interesting. I will say that it was very fast-paced. The story could have benefitted with more time focusing on the development of the main characters. Despite this, Aster was a charming protagonist along with her friend Wallis. I would love to see more of Aster if there are any future volumes.

I can understand why the original publisher had two volumes, as the contents of which are pretty distinctly different. The premise of the second is unusual, but the story drew me into the proceedings.

Aster é uma adolescente que vive à margem da sociedade Pan, um povoado rural em um futuro devastado. Após a chegada dos militares de uma poderosa cidade que tenta subjugar a escassa produção agrícola de Pan, Aster se junto a um grupo de moradores para defender seu povoado através de um esporte levado muito a sério chamado Mecânica Celeste (que é basicamente o que a gente conhece como queimada, com algumas regrinhas a mais).
A HQ impressiona pelas artes deslumbrantes, pelos cenários e ambientação muito bem desenvolvidos. As ilustrações de página inteira são frequentes, verdadeiras obras de arte que eu poderia colocar em um quadro na minha casa.
Há alguns problemas estruturais de desenvolvimento de personagem e da própria espinha dorsal da trama. O uso de elipses é muito frequente, mas pelo menos 20% das vezes não é tão eficaz quanto deveria, o que acaba gerando certa confusão em algumas cenas ou viradas de página. Apesar disso, a dinâmica do jogo (mecânica celeste), as ilustrações e a ambientação são tão bem feitos que eu acabei não dando muita atenção para os probleminhas que citei. No fim das contas esta foi uma história que me fisgou de um jeito que me obriguei a largar o livro só quando tivesse concluído a leitura, e isso é sempre um indicativo de uma boa história.

هذه قصة ما بعد الكارثة تدور في 2068، بعد أن تعرضت الأرض لكارثة أعادت الحياة في أغلب مناطقها إلى شكل بدائي، وبطلتنا أستر التي عاشت طول عمرها في "بان" ولكن أهل "بان" لا يعتبرونها من أهل البلد تجد نفسها تدافع عنهم في شكل جديد من لعبة الدودج بول.
قصة غريبة ورسومات رائعة كعادة أعمال "مروان"، واستمتعت بها جدا، وهي طبعا مخصصة للشباب والبالغين، ليست للأطفال.

This is my second Merwan graphic novel, and though his stories are outlandish, I find myself loving them even if I didn't totally understand them. But I can say I definitely understood this story more than Pistouvi, his previous work I've read.

This is a post-apocalyptic story set in 2068, and Earth is in ruins now, with some people living a life of scavenging, and others trying to rule over them. We follow the main character Aster, who's lived her whole life in Pan, but she's not a citizen, but she steps up to defend Pan in a game called Celestial Mechanics, which is basically Dodge-ball. The story was confusing at some parts, and I liked the "Myth" aspect of the end, and I feel that the fox's tail was a nod to Pistouvi? I might be reading too much into it.

Anyway, I loved the world, and I would love to see more of it, and the romance was endearing, and I wanted to see more of that too. I'm definitely keeping an eye on upcoming works by Merwan.

Cons: a few too many plot threads to explore each idea fully, a bit of "story within a story" bookending that I'm not a huge fan of

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
So, um, I am going to keep this one short as I just don't know what to think of this graphic novel. The idea was pretty fun, a dystopian world, a girl who hasn't been born in a city so according to citylaws is Un-Pan, I was curious to finding out more about the world and what had happened to it. In the end? We don't find out anything. Instead we see dodgeball (well ish, sometimes it looks like paintball) battles to gain independence (yes, really). With various terrains. Aster is magically amazing at this apparently despite not knowing what to do at first. Aster also isn't the smartest cookie because everyone could see who that woman was. There is also a bit of romance, just a bit though. I found it cute, but also a bit eh given how Wallis reacted. Come on, Wallis, you know Aster...
The art is gorgeous! Really, some scenes were just so pretty and I loved the character design.
The ending was a surprise.
All in all, I am just not sure how I felt about it. Too much dodgeball for me. Never liked the sports that much.

After Europe Comics gave the English language market the full 200 pages of this in two files (they're a digital-only house, don't'cha know), it's down to Magnetic Press and their scouts for foreign-language franchises to give us the whole shebang. Mind, even complete it's not completely edifying – a community in a post-Apocalypse France, whose future relies on the ruler's son making a surprise comeback to things, to lead a band of no-marks in a life-or-nothing game of dodgeball. Yup, dodgeball. The first battle is in a standard sort of court, the second in a more high-tech arena with climate control, etc, and the third takes all combatants into the Radlands that have been off-limits to all gangs, tribes and peoples before now. It's not heinously bad, but when one of the characters wails late on that "this makes no SENSE!" you're not far off disagreeing. Hardly worth the prestige publication it's getting – I said last time three stars was a little generous and I can't change that verdict.

wowow. one of the best graphic novels i’ve ever read. i love dystopian and futuristic graphic novels and this one did not disappoint. the art style here was so aesthetic and the panels and direction of them was very cinematic and easy to read like watching an animated movie. which made me desperate for an animated adaptation of this story, and i would even read a novelization of it! which brings me to another strong point: the plot. i really liked the storyline and world-building of this dystopian world. it felt very real and brought to life by the art sceneries but also the atmosphere and the characters. the characters! i loved the diversity of this splendid cast and enjoyed all of their interactions. they made me laugh and gasp many times.

overall i enjoyed this story a lot, i’ll definitely be picking up more work by this author when i can!

I'm a huge fan of graphic novels and Aster of Pan was a fresh indie comic with gorgeous illustrations. Merwan built an interesting post-apocalyptic world where the citizens of Pan struggle to survive with limited resources and radiation poisoning the land. Aster, the title character, is "un-Pan", born outside the territory and not granted citizenship or rations as dictated by Pan laws. When an armed delegation from the distant territory of Fortuna arrives on Pan's shores with an ultimatum, the fate of Pan and its citizens rests in a form of ritual combat that basically amounts to dodgeball.

Unfortunately, that's where the story kind of lost me. In general I'm not a sports fan and it just seemed exceedingly silly for the fate of an entire nation to be decided by a ball game. I was drawn in my the world of Pan and the ways the different territories survived and rebuilt after cataclysmic disaster and I would have preferred to see more of a focus on the survivors and the political/social structures of Pan, Fortuna and Ceres. In addition, Aster being preternaturally skilled at this ball game when she'd never even heard of it or practiced before the initial match was a bit too much of a stretch for me.

Overall, I really liked the art and it was worth the read just for the illustrations.

Apparently this was originally written in French as Mécanique Céleste, which I didn't know until I finished it. Very cool! I love reading translated work.

‘The envoys are supposed to represent the planets … but that girl’s a star.’

I didn't realise this was a sport-themed graphic novel, oops. Not a genre I'd normally pick up, but I enjoyed this one! The art is really cool and the colour are very ... calming, almost? The colour scheme reminded me of Peanuts, although the genres aren't in the same realm at all. It was very retro! The plot is fairly straight forward: the fate of everyone's future lies with who wins the match. So, in essence it's a very relaxed, sporty version of The Hunger Games.

Worth a read, especially for those who like dystopian, sports or graphic novels!

Aster of Pan is a translated, futuristic graphic novel about a girl named Aster who tries to be accepted by the citizens of Pan and become one of their own. When the citizens of Pan are faced with a difficult choice, Aster will participate in the Celestial Mechanics, a series of dangerous ball games, to help the place she'd like to call home.

Vaya pedazo de cómic. Y no lo digo porque la historia sea el colmo de la originalidad ni encierre una historia de las que dejan huella de por vida. No. Esto es puro entretenimiento, pura diversión y gozo. Y no sé vosotros pero a mí este tipo de historias me chiflan. No todo lo que lees tiene por qué cambiarte la vida. A veces solo necesitas disfrutar. Y os aseguro que con esta obra se disfruta.

Merwan nos sumerge en un mundo postapocalíptoco donde la civilización ha tocado fondo y la sociedad divide en pequeñas poblaciones, cada una con sus leyes, cultura, política, comercio, etc. Y por supuesto, donde hay humanos hay disputas. Y ahí es donde entra en acción Mecánica Celeste, un juego en el que dos equipos de distintas poblaciones se enfrentan en escenarios de sus propias ciudades o ciudades vecinas para zanjar estas disputas de poder. 

Mecánica Celeste no es más que una especie de Brilé o Balón prisionero. Imaginaos ese juego que nos encantaba de niños pero con un escenario postapocalíptico, saltos brutales y movimientos imposibles. 

Me ha flipado, simple y llanamente. Es un cómic muy visual con un dibujazo que no puedes dejar de admirar. La secuencia de viñetas es una auténtica gozada. En todo momento ves los movimientos y no se hace en absoluto confuso, como sucede en otras obras de esta temática. Y la historia se sostiene. Es simple pero acompaña al dibujo a la perfección, añadiendo además sus pinceladas de crítica social y dejando un mensaje claro sobre el poder de la amistad, la familia, el crecimiento personal o el trabajo en equipo. De modo que es un cómic que tanto adultos como los más jóvenes pueden disfrutar a la perfección. 

Yo me lo he pasado pipa. Era justo lo que necesitaba en ese momento. Un spokon a la europea. Y a mí con eso ya me gana.

Alors, c'est une dystopie dans un monde pollué avec des sociétés fragmentées. Il y a eu un ou plusieurs événements qui ont contaminé la planète dans laquelle vivent différentes sociétés. Une société domine toutes les autres techniquement néanmoins les sociétés moins avancées peuvent acquérir leur autonomie politique en jouant à un jeu, une sorte de ballon prisonnier télédiffusé. Et donc, on suit le déroulement de l'équipe dominante contre l'équipe des outsiders.

Pourquoi ai je lu cette BD au scénario peu original vu que ça ressemble franchement à Hunger games ? Alors pour trois raisons : l'émission Le reveil culturel sur France culture qui en a fait l'éloge, le prix obtenu à Angoulême et le fait qu'elle se trouvait dans les coups de coeur de mes deux librairies de référence dont Le tracteur savant à Saint Antonin Noble Val (extraordinaire librairie soit dit en passant).

Maintenant, si vous avez lu ou vu un Hunger games, ben, c'est pareil (en gros) mais avec du ballon prisonnier. Là où j'ai pris du plaisir c'est dans les très beaux dessins aux couleurs pastels. La personnage centrale attachante m'a fait penser à Sillage en rousse, ce qui est positif. Je ne sais pas qui est le coloriste mais il a fait du très beau boulot, c'est visuellement très agréable.

Je conseillerais de le lire en magasin pour vous faire une idée et de l'acheter si vraiment il vous plaît. J'ai trouvé ça beau mais pas au point de claquer 3h30 de salaire au Smic (avant impôt sur le revenu), pour cet opus. Faut pas déconner quand même...

Aster of Pan went in a direction I absolutely did not see coming: it's basically a story of high-stakes dodgeball, with the stakes being societal freedom. Fun!

To me, this was pretty much middle-of-the-road fare. While the art is definitely impressive in its own right, and the story was fun in a way that's not too superficial, unfortunately, neither really allowed me to connect with the ARC in any way.

Un album muy dinamico, digno de ser visto mas en pelicula de tv que en dibujo pero se refleja muy bien el movimiento tanto de los personajes como de los “orbes” y mantiene la emoción en todo momento en este “combate”. Toda una sorpresa

I really enjoyed the art and Aster's spirit. The juxtaposition of the sport and world politics was interesting, but there was very little lead up to the political subplot so I wasn't invested in it enough to feel the tension there.

The story starts with our two main characters, Wallis from Pan and Aster an Un-Pan. We come to realize that something happened with the world and that they live in a dystopian/post-war and that the people of Pan are poor and live with difficulties.

Suddenly one day they are approached by people from Fortuna and challenged to a ball game (it's really dodge ball but make it cooler) with promises of a better life.
However the Ceres people that are trying to overthrow the Fortuna people explain the situation to the Pan and ask them for their help so that all can live peacefully.

I really liked the tournament parts of the comic and Aster as a main character.

The ending of the book was really good and I really enjoyed it!

Cómic deportivo en un mundo postapocalíptico en el que el destino de una región de supervivientes se decide en una especie de juego de balón prisionero pasado de vueltas... La historia no tiene sentido, pero es muy divertido y el dibujo es una pasada.

The art is gorgeous. The colour palette has soft, pastel colours, which contrasts nicely with the bold black lineart. I really like the watercolour/gouache effect. The environments are pretty detailed, which helps a lot with the worldbuilding of the futuristic world. Ohh, and the character designs are stunning!

Story-wise, I do have some problems. It was too fast-paced, so it could have benefitted from more character development and more worldbuilding. I wasn't expecting that 50% of the book would be sports/dodge-ball (which also didn't make sense), and I didn't like the extreme focus on the competition. That said, Aster is a lovely protagonist! I really liked her character.

Overall, I would recommend it for the art, not for the story.
