‘There are two types of sleep for babies: quiet and active’

Author Ava Burke first teamed with author Steven Bell in writing the very successful FIRST TIME DAD: PREGNANCY HANDBOOK FOR DADS-TO-BE and now rolls solo with SLEEP TRAINING FOR BABIES. The book is brief but cogent and a very much-needed guide to assist parents – especially those with the firstborn family addition!

This readily accessible book, written by an obviously well informed and trained mother, makes the ’problem’ of sleepless nights that accompany a newborn’s arrival into the home a universal one. ‘We know that in the first few months of a baby’s life they are not developmentally ready to sleep through the night. That is caused by a variety of factors. For the first three months of a baby’s life, they will need to eat every three hours. Their tiny, new bellies only have room for small amounts of breastmilk or formula at a time and must be refilled every few hours…it is critical to ensure a baby is fed multiple times throughout the day and night….you will be losing sleep during this time while tending to the needs of your child. This is normal and necessary during this time in your child’s life. However, as your baby moves on through this stage and onto the next, they will no longer require this type of attention at night…a time will come when we must take a step back and help our children figure things out for them selves while supporting the along the way. That’s exactly what will happen with sleep training.’

Approaching new parents with this quality of supportive understanding, Ava maps out her suggestions for sleep training by first discussing the scientific aspects of sleep needs and myths, a very insightful and helpful foundation for understanding the advice that follows. In tandem with consulting with the pediatrician, the steps for establishing successful sleep training include creating a sleep-friendly environment, a routine that can be comfortably followed, and even a step by step guide for initiating the sleep training – including keep a ‘diary’ of sleep habits.

User friendly and easily accessible, this little book appears a sure partner in overcoming neonatal insomnolence!
