As a mortician, Seb has mastered the art of making the dead resemble the living. He’s embalmed countless corpses, unpacked organs, reset bones and made up pallid faces for their final viewing. If he’s honest, he prefers the company of the deceased – no surprises and nobody to witness his inadequacy. But they don’t make for great work stories – nothing for his teenage child ...more

...more

Komaaaaaan! Briljant. Briljant. Briljant.
Ek was mal oor Seb.

Ek het lanklaas in my lewe 'n karakter so toegejuig.

"Die dooies is so goed as onskuldig, Glo hy.

Hierdie boek lees soos ‘n sprokie.

Maklike leestrant

Zirk van den Berg se gemaklike skryfstyl maak van ‘n donker tema heerlike leesstof. Diep sake word aangeraak, sonder onnodige gewroeg.

If Sebastian Faulks were to write a Mitch Albom story this is what I think you’d get. Beautifully written, I found it moving and thoughtful and it has stayed in my mind since I read it a few days ago. I have no doubt that it’s a book I’ll return to again and again. Declaration: I do know the author, so I have considered my rating carefully and objectively.

I read the English translation: 'I wish I wish '. So, I'm not usually a fan of the magical realism genre - maybe I'm just too pragmatic; life never delivers a fairy godmother, or a magic lamp. But some stories like 'American Gods' and 'I wish I wish' seem to tinker with the boundary of reality so appealingly, that I find myself drawn into the wonderful web of words these authors spin. In this novella, Seb, a mortician, seems caught in a twilight world of his own making. He's obviously alive, yet ...more
