Have you ever read a book where the cover actually ruined it for you? I'm not talking about a bad or cheesy cover, which can be very fun it its own way. I mean that the cover model ruined the character because once that person was in your head - and you were definitely NOT attracted - it was stuck. That's what happened here. Because this cover model looks like Burt from Raising Hope who is as far from sexy as any human can be. Behold Burt:

Okay, maybe he's a little bit funny. But NOT sexy. Dumb i

I throughly enjoyed this book.

It wasn’t however the book I’d been expecting. Ms Winters books normally have me laughing out loud. Tears streaming down my face kind of laughing. I’d warned my husband beforehand I was starting a new one. I usually end up laughing so much he can’t sleep. The books are given daylight only reading get the picture.

So I started reading. After awhile hubby turns to me and asks.
“You’re not laughing. Is the book disappointing?”

No and no was my answer.

How to Save a Human was funny and sweet and silly and tender, and oh how I loved it!
Bentley (DeGray) and River's story was a perfect addition to the VRC series. It made me laugh and cry from one page to the next.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but to me, Alice Winters is the Helena Hunting of the m/m genre. They both write such fun and ridiculous and at times over the top silliness, but are able to balance that with emotions and feels and seriousness, when called for. I love that I just neve

This is River's and Bentley's story. We got a bit of a glimpse of them in the last book but this one goes into more detail. This book also takes place in between events in the previous books so, that did make things flow a little oddly but mostly it was fine.

To be honest these characters did not really capture me like previous ones. DeGray is still pretty one note for me. River was trying to bring the sass but it mostly seemed forced and didn't flow naturally. The romance was ok. I hone

I have been yowling like a banshee for Bentley DeGray’s book, and he and River took me on quite the unexpected but still completely wonderful journey. Full of the hilarious craziness we adore from our lovable VRC crew, it also packed a heart-wrenching amount of emotion. Bentley I figured had some hidden depths but River ripped at my heart with his. I wanted to tear to pieces anyone who hurt him—that’s Marcus’s influence—and never stop giving him cuddles—that’s Claud

I love the VRC series. It's a perfect mix of vampire cops, convoluted plots and humour. Initially set between book 2 and 3, it is absolutely necessary to have read 1, 2 and 3 first because of spoilers and frankly, you just won't appreciate how normal Bentley is!
This has a slightly different tone with Bentley and River as our narrators. Neither are as fiesty as Finn or flamboyant as Claude. I loved the change and appreciated the little glimpses of other plots from a different perspective

DeGray's book is finally here! I love the VRC series so much and this is the fourth book in the series. You need to read the previous books as this one takes place in a the same timeline and has major spoilers for the first three books.

River and Bentley are adorable together. It's a bit more serious than the others and has an overall different tone. River and Bentley are probably "normal" compared to Finn or Claude. But it's still funny, silly, sweet, and oh so emotional. Unicorns and Bat boys

Bentley and River have a very different feel to their story than the other books in the series. They are a tad more serious, and I guess, "normal" would be the word... It, however, is still so much fun! And you can bet it still has all the craziness we've come to expect from the VRC crew, especially with Finn and Claude along for the ride. But I think the emotional punch is much stronger in this book. Bentley is a wonderful character and I enjoyed that we finally get to learn more about him and ...more

Know that this story is very much in keeping with the other books in Alice Winters’ fabulous Vampire Related Crimes series. We have a suspenseful investigative thriller, humor, a great relationship, and interaction with the whole gang from the VRC. While this story is somewhat heavier than the others, it still fits in with the series well and kept me totally engaged. I’ll also note that the story fits into the series timeline starting after the events of book 1 an

I’m not going to leave a lengthy or in depth review but I do want to just share a few opinions.

First of all I was super surprised to see this book was out, I’ve been under a rock for several months so it was a rather pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, I was totally underwhelmed in the end.

In the first few books DeGray is mostly in the background and is the definition of a “side character”, he only comes to the front when Finn is hounding him about Alexi. To be honest he still felt like a backgr

Alice Winters never disappoints me. She may have me nearly throwing my Kindle in tears or rolling on the floor in laughter but never does she disappoint me. The last several books in this series definitely had me curious and chomping at the bit for more about DeGray and here we finally get his story. Rivers is unexpectedly funny and the two play off each other so we'll. As always we have crimes and mysteries that need solving and I enjoyed the coming together of minds in this regard. Ok I just devoured this book. This is my favorite book of this series. It surely can be read as a standalone.

This book had a totally different feel to me and I just could not put it down. I had an instant love to a River and loved how he met Bentley and their friendship grew Into love.

Throw in all of the VRC crew and what a adventure we go on to catch the bad guys and save River. We get all the laughs and snark we are used to with this group of guys but we also get pain and longing with River.

Love! I'm glad DeGray got his own story, especially given that he's the one sane person in that group. River is the one in charge of the strangeness, but then again, Bentley spends his days with Finn, Marcus, Alexei and Claude, so it's only parr for the course he got a screw slightly loose. ...more

I hate when I don't save my review & my computer decides it's going to just restart because it can.

This was a little heavier then the prior books, but I still loved it. I don't think it should be read as a stand-a-lone as it does span the course of the first three books from Bentley's POV. River meets Bentley at a coffee shop & when he sits at the same table and starts reading a book that has unicorns in it, River starts teasing him about unicorn porn that had me cracking up. I loved watching t

I received and ARC of this book and I loved it! The VRC series was how I began reading Alice Winters and while I have since read many others this series stands out for me. This is not a standalone novel and should be read in order for maximum enjoyment.

In this book we get to meet River and get a perspective of someone outside of the team. It was so much fun to see the guys through someone else’s eyes. Especially someone who is so different and has a past that should keep him far away.

This book was SO GOOD. I love the VRC crew, and this book was so damn perfect. I loved seeing that the "normal one" was just as crazy as the others and he just kept his crazy better hidden. River was a sweetheart and all their interactions were equal parts adorable and hilarious.

I did enjoy reading How to Save a Human as overall I love this series, but the main couple of this story didn't quite draw me in as much as the main characters/couples of books 1-3. Rather than reading this in one sitting, it took me a few days.

How to Save a Human had the humour I was expecting, and I do enjoy all the interactions between the other members of the VRC. Loved the addition of the slightly evil cat that just loves messing with Bentley........Readers definitely need to rea

I have been eagerly waiting for DeGray's story and How to Save a Human does not disappoint! Bentley DeGray is a wonderful mix of sweet, sensitive and sexy! He is strong and dependable but so lonely. The last member of his human family is elderly and frail and he is beyond sad. Enter River, a complication he never saw coming.

River has been abused and tortured beyond measure. Somehow he is still able to retain his humanity and brings hope to Bentley. I loved the dynamics between these two. The hum

Bentley is the steadfast, solid and dependable member of the VRC unit but his life is thrown for a loop when he meets River in a bookshop. River has overcome so many hurdles in his life but is still capable of caring and loving others all with a healthy dose of sass and humour. So begins their romantic journey which includes a bucket list of misadventures, a mesh shirt, dubious artistic talent and the worlds most evil feline. Culminating in a well earned HEA for these two wonderful men.

I got to read an early copy of this book, and I can't reccomend it enough. If you are a fan of Alice Winters and have read the other books in the VRC universe, you definitely need to check this out. Book 4 in the series tells us DeGray's story. We finally learn some more details and the handsome do-good member of the VRC team, including his first name (Bentley). Working a case, he meets a wary human named River, and the story focuses on solving a string of vampire-related crimes, attacks, and so ...more

I love this series, and I think that River and Bentley are perfect for it.

Poor River, so, so much happened. But I think he was pretty strong and was able to fight through so much.

I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this book and it was wonderful! Though I had read the first three, this book worked as a standalone and was easy to dive into. The characters have such depth and the Easter eggs from the former books made it fun to read. There was action and romance and tears and laughter and I highly recommend this to anyone who likes to read good books.

River and Bentley.
Not my favourite bk of the series. I did not like it as much as the other 3 bks, but I did not hate it either.
Set over the period of bk 2 and 3.
The series and characters remind me so much of Charlie Cochet's Dex and Sloane and the THIRDS characters and Mary Calmes Sam and Jory and the Marshal Characters.
Don't hesitate to read. Recommend.

Of all the books in this series, this has the sweetest story line. It has less humor, but fits in nicely with the other stories. This is an awesome series. It is one of the few good things to happen in 2020.

“You’re strangely prepared.”
“Not for this, no. I just heard condoms were really good for opening a stuck jar. You just pop it on top and instant hand grip. That’s the only reason I’ve been carrying one around.”
“You… often come across bottles you can’t open?”
“Far too much. And the lube was for greasing up… stuff, obviously. I didn’t at all plan to have you take me to an amusement park and fuck me in the car or something weird,” I say as I tear open the packet of lube. After I squirt some onto my hand, he takes it from me.
“I’m surprised you weren’t planning for something R-rated on the carousel or something after dark.”
“Ooh, that’s a good one. Especially with that music they play, it’d be the best sex jam ever.”
“Would it?” he asks suspiciously.
“Of course,” I say, unable to keep the grin off my face. “If I had my phone, I’d play it and you could fuck me to the beat.”
“I don’t think carousel songs have a ‘fucking beat,’ but I could be wrong.”
“Don’t eat my fish.”
“I’ll be patient and just snack on you when you come home.”
“Don’t eat the cat.”
His smirk falls to a mock glare. “Come on, have some faith in me!”
“Don’t eat the neighbor.”
“The neighbor is like ninety and shriveled up and probably has old blood.”
I raise an eyebrow. “And you know what the neighbor looks like because?”
River stares at me with wide eyes. “I… like… watching blood bags—people… walk around outside as my mouth waters.”
I’m quite terrified of this fact. “Oh my god, you’re going to eat someone!”
