I’m Glynn Forester and I’m Magis. More. I enhance and strengthen magical energy. My power augments rather than creates. But sometimes More is not enough.

My world is fractured between magic and non-magic. The magical elite rule. And they are ruthless and corrupt. They want what I protect. But protecting it has been my family’s job for time before time. So I hide. I hide from those who would attempt to use my abilities for unscrupulous purposes. I hide to save innocents from their venom.

But something’s changing. The world around me is pulsing with malevolent magic, I realize I no longer have the luxury of anonymity. It’s hard to give up my old ways. But I may not have a choice. Others will need my help. And if I deny them I’ll be no better than those who threaten my world.

Will my magic make a difference in this new reality? I can offer Magis. More. But will it be enough? And will there be anything left of me when it’s done?

Glynn is a magis (she can take magic from others and enhance it). She is guardian of a portal to another realm and she lives in a big sentient house with a really adorable 3 year old gargoyle baby called Boyd. You get sucked into the story right away.

About 3 years ago all people with magic were ordered to move to the big cities like Magic Indy, but Glynn and people in her town went into hiding and try to live their lives away from the big Magic Body who rules them all. Until strange things start to happen and Glynn encounters Hawk and his big hellhound Nicht. Something very big is afoot and Glynn has to protect the portal, her friends and family and herself.

This is my first Sam Cheever-book and I was taken in by the story straight away. I read it in one evening and can't wait for the next book. I highly recommend!

I received an ARC via Booksprout and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Magis is a magical beginning to a wonderful story.

I am sniffing and wiping away 😢 tears because it is done and not because it is sad. The characters are like having your besties staring in a movie. They are so real and warm with snarky humor and real love for their friends and neighbors. The storyline is touching and keeps you turning pages afraid to put it down cause it might dissolve.
I can't tell you all the wonderful things in this story but I can tell you that you are nuts if you don't start reading it Now! Absolutely wonderful and I want more! Can I borrow Boyd and Nicht?

It's a small town where people, magic and non-magic alike, keep to themselves, hiding their talents from those who have the power to bring misery to their lives. Glynnie lives is a house called Victoria which is magical. She is also the keeper of the portal which lives in the heart of Victoria's basement. Though she possesses no magic of her own, she is able to enhance the magical powers that surround her. This comes in quite handy as someone new is spotted in her town, living across the street from her, watching every move she makes. His name is Hawk and he is more than he appears in so many ways. Along with his large dog, Nicht, he is a distracting force to be reckoned with. This first book in the new MAGIS series is amazing, packed with constant action from one page to the next. The characters come alive and you are immediately drawn into them, feeling you've known them as friends forever. Sis, Glynnie's best friend, is a witch from a powerful family but she wants nothing to do with that lifestyle. Art, Glynnie's brother, who had chosen to leave the house, Victoria, to pursue the draw to power that magic offered him has come back for a visit...but why? Boyle, a baby gargoyle, adorable as a 3 year old could be, making messes, eating cookies and protecting Glynnie from anything that could harm her. The evil powers of The Body want to control all magic and will stop at nothing for more power. The rebels in the outskirts of town will fight to keep their freedom. Glynnie will learn where her true powers lie and will take you along on the adventure of your life!

Buy this book! Open up the pages and step inside the world of magic and monsters, even monsters who look like you and me. This is one adventure you don't want to miss!!!!

You will totally be surprised and delighted with this new series. Sam Cheever has a way with vivid descriptions of people, places and the unexplainable.  You always feel like you are right alongside our heroes. The MAGIS is a true breakaway from her normal cozy mysteries. This is not just another cozy paranormal series. It is true paramirmal fight between good and evil

Glynn Forester is a Magis. Her power enhances and strengthens magical energy rather than creating it. Magic users have moved to a few big cities with the idea it would be easier to control unethical used of magic. Instead it seens to have created an elite group of controlling magic users.  Glynn snd a few neighbors hid out while magic uses wete forced to move to the cities.  Now she helps protect her friends and neighbors.

I quickly became enamored with this new series. So many great characters.  Especially the Hellhound that gives horsey rides to a baby gargoyle. Now, how will Glynna save her friends and Victoria the house. Pins and needs here waiting for Book 2.

Glynn lives in Render taking care of the house and the portal that is there. She also has a young gargoyle that she found and is her son. She feels someone out there watching her. Glynn doesn't know what this person wants. She meets this mysterious stranger. He has helped her several times, but she is hesitant to trust him. Her brother shows up after she has not seen him in so long. Her brother has done some dangerous things, he doesn't remember.
Glynn decides to get information from Hawk, he tells her what he can. She also finds out that her brother is under some influence. Things get even worse than the attacks, when they have a visitor. Things go from bad to worse.

This was a great story. I recommend reading this, there is so much I didn't say. I would read more featuring these characters. There is so much in this that everyone can read.

Glynn lives in a world, where a few people without magic rule over everyone else, enslaving the non-magic people and "harvesting" power from weak magic users.
Living outside their boundaries in an old house that is protected by her grandmother's strong magic, even after she had passed away, her sole task is to protect the portal that is in the basement of the house and to neither let creatures in from another dimension nor anyone from her world go into another dimension. One day just everything she ever knew is coming down. She and her friends are attacked by strange creatures and they have to fight to survive and protect the portal.
A fast-paced story, with unbelievably many attacks that seem relentless, follow keeping the reader on their toes. Thrilling with a surprise ending.

Our heroine is magical herself, but boosts the magic of others. The key is figuring out who to trust with a boost.

This is an urban fantasy story of a quite unique nature. I found the setting and the way magic works to be quite fascinating and different, which certainly got my attention. The characters are also well developed. Our heroine is smart and tough, which she is going to need here. The story itself is well written and easy to read with a plot that moves at a good pace and features lots of interesting twists and reveals. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and would love to see more set in this world.

Highly recommended.

Good start to an interesting series

A magical take on dystopian living where those with magic take advantage of those with little to no magic. For anyone who does not want to live under the thumb of the magical governing body, they have to evade the hunters and soldiers looking to enforce their rules on all magical and non-magicals alike. Glynnie, along with a small group of her neighbors with and without magical abilities live in the small hometown of Render. When a stranger moves in and monsters from another realm begin attacking, Glynnie with her best friend Sissy, her baby gargoyle Boyle and her magical house Victoria may find themselves at risk of discovery and needing to trust that they can survive these latest threats to their freedom.

Wow!! Intense new series by thevwonderful Sam Cheever.
This is so different from her other books. There is a tension that sucks in and keeps you reading. It starts from the first chapter till end. Cannot wait for more. So different from her Keeper if the Artifacts series.

I want a Boyle!!! HE IS SO CUTE!! Hi! Although I do not think I can wait for him to hit 30 in his years. Real curious what abilities he will bring.

I have read another series by this author and see Boyle, Mr. Wicked, siblings, Hobs and et al, meeting in a novella in the future. Hint Hint

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

Beginning of a New and Exciting Paranormal Cozy Series
I loved this book and am excited to see where this series goes. This is a cozy paranormal series and like a few others of this author's series, has somewhat of a gentle sci-fi air about it. If you enjoyed her 'Enchanting Inquiries' series, you will love this one, too. The story is novel-length which gives the reader enough detail to really immerse yourself in this new world. I can't wait for the next book! I received this ARC book for free from Booksprout and this is my honest review.

The book starts shrouded in mystery.

Why are towns almost ghost towns?
Why do people sleep during the day & wake up during the night?
Why are the residents hiding & living?
What does the body really want?
Is the body for the people or secretly following some agenda of their own?

All these questions & more keeps one guessing all the time. With lots of mystery, magic & thrill every incident only adds to the mystery.

A good book to start the series with.

Victoria is awesome and Boyle is adorable.
This is not the " brave new world" of anyone's dreams, it seems to be a magical dystopia where decent people hide their talents. Glynn is the adopted mother to a baby gargoyle and the keeper of a sentient house, she and her neighbours try to stay unnoticed in their small town, but trouble comes along in the shape of demons and the fight is on. Characters are great, lots of action and the ending is very unusual.

Wow! Just, Wow!!!

This was amazing! Sam is my favorite author and hasn't disappointed again. Her world building is such that you see and feel everything around the characters. She has a way of bringing to life characters as if you have always known them and want to be part of their world. I absolutely love this new world and group of characters. I can't wait to see what happens next. Well done Sam 😁

This isn't the usual style of book that I read but this was pretty good. I thought I was actually living in the story rather than reading it. Great plot, great characters, awesome descriptions of the characters and story.

OMG what a fantabulous read! The world building is fantastic and the storyline addictive and exciting. A guardian, a gargoyle and a black cat sounds like the start of a bad joke but it’s definitely not! It’s adventurous and amazing and magical and you will be glued to the pages and absolutely love the humour, snark and the awesome characters!

One Word: Boyle

Boyle, the baby gargoyle, steals the show in this novel. He cements all the sub-plots together in this magically graphic dystopian tale while his adoptive mother, Glynn, serves as the main protagonist.

Having read a lot of Sam Cheever's works over the last few years, this entry is as good or better than her current Enchanting Inquiries series, which happens to be fantastic and an automatic pre-order for me. I sincerely hope that Ms Cheever writes a second entry in this arena; but, if not, the current story is complete, no cliffhangers - just hooks and situations that could lead to further entries.
