You Had It Coming is the tenth novel by Australian author Ber Carroll, the third written as B.M. Carroll. When DS Bridget Kennedy is assigned the murder of high-profile barrister, William Newson, finding potential suspects is the least of her problems.

Newson specialised in sexual assault cases, and was skilled at painting alleged victims as liars, gaining favourable verdicts for perpetrators, or getting cases against his clients dropped. Angry victims, family members and friends understandably

“Someone else must hate him as much as we do.”

As paramedic Megan Lowe loads a patient suffering gunshot wounds into her ambulance she is stunned to realise she recognises the man. Twelve years previously William Newson was the barrister who successfully gained the acquittal of the two men who raped her, by labelling her and her best friend Jess as liars. Homicide Squad detective Bridget Kennedy is suspicious of the coincidence, but she quickly learns that plenty of people thought he had coming,

You Had It Coming is a tumultuous psychological suspense novel exploring revenge, shattered reputations, and the true nature of consent. We are introduced to a barrister, who has made a name for himself defending sexual assault cases, and who is shot outside his home. William Newson is a beloved father, a considerate boss and a strong advocate for the rights of the accused. He is also responsible for the acquittal of defendants who are guilty of their crimes and enabling at least one repeat offe ...more

You Had it Coming was quite a page turner, and although I’d guessed the finer points it was still a read I was keen to get done.
When paramedic Megan is called to a shooting, she knows things might not end well. The man dies later that night, but at the scene Megan realises she knows him. The man who has been shot is someone who she feels has destroyed her life.
What transpires is something of a cat and mouse game. The shooting is linked to historic cases and there’s a long list of characters who

Well wow, what can I say about this book? I am at a loss for words and how dramatic and intriguing this book is.

Right from the beginning, it had me wanting and needing to read on. The shocking discovery that Megan knew the patient she was treating due to an attempted murder. I found myself needing to know who he was, how she knew him and what the secret was.

I do admit, I did find myself asking if I could save someone who done put me through such a horrible ordeal? I find myself questioning it

Taut, tense and twisty, You Had It Coming is a story of injustice, murder and vengeance. At the epicentre of it all is what really happened to two teenage girls on the night of a party twelve years ago. Two girls whose worlds were destroyed when they weren’t believed. Were Megan and Jess telling the truth? Did William Newton build his reputation at their cost? Or did he save two innocent young men from injustice? These questions and more are examined in this readable page-turner.

Would you save the man who destroyed your life...?

A suspenseful psychological thriller - told from the three viewpoints of Megan, Jess, and Bridget - this book starts with a gripping first chapter, indicating revelations are surely set to unravel.

The first half is of a slower pace than I am used to, but this is due to placing a lot of emphasis on establishing good character development through the first half. The characters are well written, and there are many! So many that once you reach the se

I received a free review copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. I loved this book and became very invested in the characters and their stories. I loved how it all unfolded but I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone. The book is told from the POV of Megan, Jess and Bridget and grips you from that very first chapter. I kept jumping around on who I thought the suspect would be and was shocked by the ending and how everything tied together. ...more

I'm not typically a big crime/thriller reader but I really enjoyed this! I enjoyed the ways in which it flipped the genre on its head - the three main character perspectives were strong women, including a detective, a paramedic, and a personal trainer (three male-dominated careers). Additionally all the dead bodies in this were men, and the sanity of the female characters wasn't called into question as a plot device (can I get a hallelujah!). Carroll has managed to write a book that approaches c ...more

3.5 - This was a well written psychological thriller that started off as quite a slow burn but definitely picked up the pace! It was told from different perspectives which I love, and which helped add to the tension. There were also flashbacks to the past which provided information about what happened when Megan and Jess were younger and helped it piece together the facts behind the murder. This was full of little twists and turns. Just when I thought I had worked out who the killer was I change ...more

You Had It Coming is the first book by B.M. Carroll, which I have read, and I thought it had such an intriguing premise. I haven’t come across a crime novel before where one of the main characters is a paramedic, which offered a fascinating insight. B.M. Carroll begins to build on the suspense straight away when Megan, a paramedic, is faced with an impossible situation, saving the life of the man who ruined hers.

After we are first introduced to Megan, I wanted to know what had happened in her p

When Sydney-based paramedic Megan is called out to a shooting in a well-to-do residential area, she doesn’t immediately realise that the victim is someone she already knows. Megan and her estranged friend, Jess, were raped at a party years ago, and William Newson is the lawyer who helped their attackers evade justice, and who built his reputation defending similar cases.

The incident leads to Megan contacting Jess again, and the action in You Had it Coming is relayed by Megan and Jess as well as

This is an Australian psychological thriller written by an author I had not come across before, B.M. Carroll, but she is certainly a writer I will be looking out for in the future. The style was reminiscent of a Liane Moriarty’s book in that it is a mystery story based on something dreadful that has happened in the past that is now having an effect on present day events. It is told from the point of view of three women. Megan and Jess who suffered a traumatic event 12 years earlier and Bridget, ...more

You Had It Coming - B M Carroll

I've been reading a lot of Australian novels in the past year, more the 'School of Liane Moriarty' domestic thrillers, so I was thrilled to discover this one, quite a bit darker, more Police procedural while still having in depth characters and being very emotionally involving.

The story revolves around the murder of William Newson, a defence barrister who specialises in defending men accused of rape and sexual assault.

The novel is told from three character perspect

When William Newson a barrister who defends rapists is shot Megan a paramedic is called to the scene, she recognises him at the scene from when he was cross examining her in court during her rape trial. We have part of the story from her perspective which includes flashbacks.
We also see the book from the perspective of Jess who is Megan’s friend and another rape victim who was at Newson mercy.

Megan Lowe is a paramedic and when she turns up to an attempted murder, she goes about with her job of saving the life of the man. When the adrenaline of the job in hand relaxes and he's being wheeled into the ambulance that is when Megan takes a moment and realises she knows this man. If she had realised sooner who he was, would she have wanted to save him? He ruined her life!

So who is the man? And how is he connected to Megan? I'm not going to spoil that by divulging it in my review but I wil

First of all, thank you to @allenandunwin for my review copy.
I feel like I haven't read a thriller for quite some time so it was lots of fun to dive into this one. There was lots to love about this one - I absolutely loved the short sharp chapters, as the book switched between the perspectives of the 3 characters Jess, Megan & Bridget. It was definitely a page turner as each chapter finished with new revelations or clues which left me wanting to keep reading until I found out more. I

Megan and her partner, Lucas, do everything they can for their patient. It’s only when they’re loading him into the ambulance that Megan gets a really good look at the man whose life is hanging on by a thread. And recognises him as the one who ruined her life. B.M. Carroll is a new author to me, but I was very intrigued by the blurb of this book.

When paramedic Megan arrives at the scene of a shooting, she gets on with treating the patient, but when transferring him to the ambulance she realises she recognises him as being the man partially responsible for almost ruining her life.
Her old best friend Jess is her first phone call and seeing as the girls haven't really spoken since the events all those years ago, it is a pretty awkward conversation.
