This is another book that I wish I had not spent money on (see also "Genetics in Medicine"). Like the genetics book, I bought this book in my first block of medical school because it was required/suggested reading without thinking about whether I really needed it. My biochem classes in undergrad were very thorough and in retrospect were adequate preparation for medical school. This book, while focused specifically on topics found in medicine, was actually less in-depth than the book I used for biochem classes (Leninger). I think if you have Leninger already (or a similar text), this book is not going to add much to your resources. If you haven't had a good foundation in biochem before med school, then it would probably be really helpful. The chapters are well-written and explain concepts clearly, though as another reviewer mentioned, some details were lost as the information was simplified, and in some cases are maybe an over-simplification (though your needs will vary if you're a med student/physician vs a biochemist!). There are also a few reading comprehension questions at the end of each chapter, though with only a handful a questions each, I found they were a little bit hit-or-miss, and not a great tool for self-assessment.

This book is NOT for BIOCHEM MAGORS. It is for MEDICAL STUDENTS. It is more of a review. Its not great it you are just learning the material. I would grade it as a c book, it doesn't really go into detail. It poorly explains the relationship of normal biochemistry in healthy vs. diseased, lacks explanation of tests used in diseased states. It does give you what you need to know for the school tests.
