Our sins are written in blood, and only blood can atone for what we’ve done.
Retribution comes in unexpected forms. Mine has amber eyes. Golden hair. A smile that could kill. She was mine the minute I dragged her down to hell, and now we’re both paying the price.
I tried to save her… and failed.
GRACE
Rumors call him the Morning Star. My father only called him the devil.
The man who saved my life in one second and destroyed it in the next has returned for me. He says he’s not leaving until I’m his. The issue is, he’ll have to break past my grudge--and a pretty big gun--if he wants me.
S. Massery is a dark romance author who infuses all her stories with a dash of suspense. Formerly from Massachusetts, she now resides in Southern California with her dog, Alice.
Before adventuring into the world of writing, she went to college in Boston and held a wide variety of jobs—including working on a dude ranch in Wyoming (a personal highlight). She has a love affair with coffee and chocolate. When S. Massery isn’t writing, she can be found devouring books, playing outside with her dog, or trying to make people smile.
A page-turner with banter and chemistry. Morning Star continues the Broken Mercenaries series. In this book, we get Dalton and Grace's story. The pair has this back and forth banter that brings them to life. Coupled with the mystery and suspense their romance lights up the pages.
I'm loving all of the characters in the Broken Mercenaries Series! They are all diverse in their personalities but they all fit somehow. Dalton and Grace have this sort of love to hate type of relationship that just works. Love. It. I'm enjoying the way the author has the main story and how it's filled with high energy and suspense, but also keeping us intrigued with a deeper story that involves all of the Broken Mercenaries.
I highly recommend reading this EPIC book and be sure to stay on the lookout for more from the Broken Mercenaries Series, I know I will. Morning Star by S. Massery will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!
“S. Massery is a brilliant author, who gifts us with amazing action packed, hot as hell stories!”
Going in I knew that I was going to love this book. I have been patiently (sort of) waiting for Dalton’s story.
Dalton is the silent but deadly man in the room. With all of his training he is ready for anything, except for the one thing. Love.
Grace, is absolutely my favorite heroine!!! Her strength, beauty, and rebound is remarkable.
Bring these two characters together and not only do you have an off the charts romance, you have a sexy as hell love - hate romance that you can’t put down.
When an all out war is waged, who do you place your bets on? If the dominos are all aligned, do they fall as they should be, or change what could be?
And can I just say plot twist! The plot twist is like a left hook that you don’t see coming!!
I love every book from S. Massery. But this one, is a little more. It’s truly flawless, just read it you will not be disappointed.
With each book I get more and more invested in the series and I can read it still.
Morning Star tells us the story of Dalton and Grace. I was really excited to read his story and the book didn’t disappoint me. I loved it. I think, so far Dalton’s past got me the hardest, what he’d been through and that it still has a big grip on him but with Grace, he step by step starts to overcome the fear. Grace comes from mafia family and Dalton saves her twice from it. The book is packed with so much action and all the time something is going on and I couldn’t put the book down.
It was a great book and I hope there will be more to come.
I received this book in exchange for a honest review.
K so it was def the best book in the series like by far Shit I liked: Girl wasn’t magical cure for nightmares Trauma had actual lasting effect that caused them to need therapy Girl doesn’t bow to every whim of man and actually has a backbone
Shit that was dumb: Mafia barely had any power Girl sometimes did really random shit that made no actual sense Mf had the nickname morning star and we were supposed to take it seriously
K here’s some quotes that I had opinions on:
“She managed to rattle me from five hundred yards away. I don’t understand it. Women are confusing.” Dalton had this thing where he did like women r confusing or ugh women and it had like a really weird misogynistic undertone and I didn’t get the point of it at all.
“There’s more to you than a pretty face. Who knew you could be so valuable?” His lips touch the ring on my finger, and I shudder. “It’ll be so much fun to watch you break.” K so this was the weird evil Marco dude and I was just like lol if this was the main dude saying this some of y’all would think it’s hot but yeah okay.
“He chuckles and sighs, taking the gun from my hand like I’m a child. He disassembles it and drops the pieces around me. “Don’t play with toys you don’t know how to use.” “You shot me.” He shrugs. “You deserved it.” In one swift motion, he picks me up and throws me over his shoulder. “Let go of me, you asshole,” I yell. I squirm, hoping he’ll drop me, but he just slaps my ass.” Um okay two comments first their dynamic is cool I enjoyed it. Second him slapping her ass is literally only considered like hot or okay because he’s the main dude like if Marco did this shit it would suddenly be bad.
“I am Grace Leigh Jones, I tell myself. I am badass and powerful and won’t agree to being locked in a room. The longer I sit here, the angrier I get.” These were times when it was hard to not just stop reading.
“She rolls her eyes. “Fuck off.” “I’d love to. But there’s just something about a damsel in distress that makes me want to push all of her buttons.” She looks down, and I realize it’s to hide a smile. I almost go over there and lift her chin, just to see it clearly.” Yeah okay I hate this trope where like the main girl pretends to fight back and like is snarky and shit but really already likes the guy it’s so cringe and weird.
“I stalk up to Dalton and push at his chest. “I can’t just abandon my dad. My friends—” “You don’t have any freaking friends, Grace,”
“I was having a bad dream,” she says. “Oh, were you being sold as a sex slave in Europe? Because I had a hand in preventing that.” K so yeah I loved their dynamic bruh it was funny asf and just like fun to read.
“I tried to learn how to surf once,” Grace says. She comes up and stops beside me, shielding her face. “It ended in disaster.” “A sightseeing plane I was on crashed into the ocean,” I say. “I had to drag the pilot behind me as I swam to shore.” See like sometimes dalton was hilarious
But yeah okay the book wasn’t awful like typical bad boy with daddy issues but it wasn’t that bad. I hate the poorly done mob or mafia element but whatever. Also their smut was like actually good.

This is book 3 in this series, I over all enjoyed it. I will say I did not love it as much as book 2 (still the best one in my option haha but still a very good read. This book packs in a lot of action in it and keeps you n your toes with Dalton's story who is a really you know what! but you fall in love with him and want to know what is going to happen. And grace is a little spitfire, shes a fighter and is awesome! This really is a good book and I highly recommend it.
Holy moly! I am enraptured with this series. I have a thing for broody, alpha, assholes.. this book definitely meets that criteria. I also loved that Grace didn’t back down and gave as good as she got! I can’t wait to read more!!
This story... Wow! I am left with a book hangover. I love this story so much! This entire series is incredible! With each page, this story has you on the edge of your seat. There's so much I want to say but I will not give spoilers. So, I'll say this... The tension, the action, the surprises... I highly recommend this series and this book. S.Massery is truly amazing.
Another good story in the series. I liked Dalton and Grace -- both are strong characters, strong, but also broken. Now, just gotta wait for Zach's story.
Blood Sky and Angel of Death were SO FREAKING GOOD in this series that I couldn't wait to get my grubby little hands on Morning Star and y'all somehow S Massery with her witchcraft delivered a book that somehow was even better than the first too (at least in my opinion). I adored the tortured Jackson and Griffin books, but y'all, Dalton's story is just WOW.
This guy is SO FREAKING interesting, I loved getting in his head. And Grace, talk about a major girl crush there. She can give as well as she can take and her snark is just so complimentary with Dalton's, because let's be honest, the guy is not all sunshine and roses. I was BLOWN AWAY by this book and that's saying something because I truly liked the first 2 books in the series but nope, Dalton hands down too the lead.
All I can say now is you need to get your hands on this book because the banter, chemistry, and suspense is out of this world good. I 100% give it 5 stars and now (semi) patiently waiting for the next book in the series to see how things are going to unfold!!
PS: Thank you to S Massery and Candi Kane PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!
Grace is the daughter of a mafia enforcer. She’s seen a lot and doesn’t fear much. She’s loyal, to a fault (and it comes back to bite her).
Dalton is know by the myth of the Morning Star (devil). He is a hired hand and feared by many. He also is closed off and vengeful. But when he does let someone in, there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them.
Dalton saves Grace from the mafia multiple time and it leads them to be on the run from them, because someone isn’t willing to let Grace go so easily.
They are so hot and cold and push and pull to begin. You feel their tension and it plays so well for both their personalities. They’re magnetic to each other and don’t even realize it, or refuse to at first.
The broken mercenaries series did not disappoint (other than still needing some of the other guys stories *cough, cough*). You get action, adventure, suspense, thrill, emotion, passion, love and romance. But most importantly amazing friendship bonds that span across all the books and make them what they are.
The Broken Mercenaries is one of my favorite series, and I NEED so much more. Morning Star was Dalton's (the dark dude you can't help but love) and Grace, the woman who went toe to toe with him. They're explosive anytime they're near each other, and yes, they have that enemies thing going, but love & hate are two sides of the same coin so let the games begin! This story kept me on the edge of my seat cover to cover, as there are twists to get the f-bombs dropping, making it impossible to take any sort of breaks because I couldn't put it down. I was drawn in from the jump, (of course I already met him in previous books) so I was ready to go. If all of this isn't perfect enough, getting the other guys as secondaries only added to the epic goodness. I CANNOT WAIT for the next book, so seriously you have to hit your one click buttons because you won't be sorry! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
This is the third book in the Broken Mercenaries Series, an amazing Romantic Suspense. Dalton and Grace's story is suspenseful, and action packed. Dalton (Morning Star) is handsome, patient, caring and protective. Grace is beautiful, sassy, reckless, badass, and determined. She is quite a handful to look after. I like their banter, and their strong chemistry. The storyline is captivating, filled with drama and twists and turns. The ending is beautiful. I like the friendship in this story! Now, I am looking forward to read the next book in the Series. I don't want to this Series to end! I HIGHLY recommend it!
This was my first book by this author and it was seriously intense. There was so much action and destruction, unexpected events, pain and sadness... but through it all was this fierce love story. Dalton and Grace hated each other. It was a brutal, passionate hate that changed into something altogether more towards the middle of the story. To be honest, I had a hard time liking Grace, and Dalton was a serious jerk. Somehow, though, the author turned it around and I was rooting for them at the end!
Even though I usually shy away from the mob-trope, I thoroughly loved this dive of the deep end into the seedy underbelly of mafia families and private military contractors.
Fast paced and action packed with a cunningness akin to the best heist movie, this book just kept surprising me at every point. Add a gorgeous, tormented hero and a spunky, determined heroine with a backdrop of the rest of the band of merry mercenaries and this book is bound to get you hooked.
Morning Star is book three in the Broken Mercenaries series. I absolutely loved the two previous books so my expectations were high for this story. The author blew my expectations out of the water with this story.
This is Dalton and Graces story. Their story is everything I wanted and more. A great love to hate story that I couldn’t put down. You really need to read this story yourself.
I seriously can’t wait to read more of this series.
4* Dalton has his eye on Grace after all shes working at the nest. Little does he know the consequences that will cause. Grace doesn't realise how much Marco desperately wants to own her. Lots of twists and drama in this story. I'm enjoying all the team and look forward to reading the next book in the series
I’ve loved Dalton sone the first book. LOVE him. Even in Jackson and griffins stories, dalton stood out to me. I couldn’t wait to read his story. Unfortunately he deserved better IMO. I didn’t like grace at all and their relationship felt forced and fake. He deserved a better love story. My poor morning star.
This series…I am absolutely (as I said) OBSESSED with the Broken Mercenaries series!! All of these guys, their women…absolute perfection!! I have all of my fingers (and toes!) crossed that someday this series will get completed!! But for now, I will settle for multiple re-reads. I highly recommend this series!!
Yet another fantastic book in a thrill seeking series that will have you on the edge of your seat from cover to cover. I have devoured these books at such a fast rate as I just couldn't them down. Exactly what I needed in my life and I cannot wait for book four.
These two suck you in. They have their own issues and they deserve their HEA. The tension between them from the start I absolutely loved. The overeaching plot contiues in this story. Loved the spicy scenes between these two. I jist wish the series was going to continue.
I LOVED Dalton and Grace's story! I admit I was a little hesitant about Dalton from the past two books. I wasn't sure if I was going to like him but I ended up loving him! I loved how his story wasn't sugar-coated and you got Dalton for what he was. Scars and all. He didn't change for nobody but he softened for Grace. Grace was great too. I loved how tough she was, even when everything was going south. The whole story was beautifully written and super interesting. I have loved this whole series and I hope there are more books in the future! Voluntary review of an ARC
Oh my goodness! Morning Star was fantastic! I could not put this book down. I read this book in a day or so, but I would have had it done sooner if I didn’t have to adult. S. Massery brings us back to the mafia world in a different state and a different mafia family! There was action, suspense, and hot romance! Honestly, I could read about Dalton and Grace all day, every day. Dalton is such a fascinating character and I feel like so many of my questions about him were answered in Morning Star.
Dalton is my favorite character out of the male leads in the Mercenaries series. I absolutely love him. He is so complex and twisted. I found myself really loving the darker side of his character. He never tried to sugar coat who he was or make any excuses. I also never knew that a sniper could be so hot. He is good at what he does and for some reason getting behind that rifle and shooting calms him. He can be such a jerk at times, but he’s the jerk you love to hate (you really don’t hate him though. Not even a little bit). I honestly don’t know what it was about his character, but he drew me in and I wanted to know more about him. He could be sweet, nice, and swoon worthy at times, while other times he could be mean, a jerk, and not swoon worthy at all (but we still love him anyway lol). I really fell for his character when I read the story from his perspective. It helped me understand why he did the things he did. I just need more of this sexy, hot, brooding man.
Oh, Grace. My heart broke for this girl. She had such a sucky upbringing. Her dad was an enforcer for a mafia family. I’m pretty sure nothing else needs to be said. I can’t even tell you how much I wanted to wrap this girl in a big hug (same with Dalton too). She is such a fighter though. Throughout the entire story, her main goal is freedom. She wants to be free from the oppressive mafia lifestyle. Women are seen and not heard. That doesn’t work for Grace at all. She’s loud, she’s opinionated, she doesn’t let a man tell her what she can and cannot do, and she’s an overall badass. She doesn’t want to become a wife of a mafia man (Marco in this case. He is seriously coocoo for Cocoa Puffs. I hated his character so much). She wants to be able to be whoever she wants and go wherever she wants without asking for a man’s permission. She just wants to be her own person. I admire her so much. There were times when she was scared out of her mind during the book, but she never stopped fighting. She is so strong and resilient. She never gave up hope that she would get her freedom and happiness.
Dalton and Grace together is absolutely the best thing ever. The chemistry between these two is amazing. Even when they hated each other, they were attracted to one another. These two fit so well together. They both had unpleasant upbringings (to put it mildly) and they struggled to deal with that. Even so, these two were perfect together. Grace brought out a side of Dalton that I don’t think even he knew existed. He is so protective of her and that is all sorts of hot. He also treats her as an equal. Honestly, these two bring out the best in each other. Not at first, but over time you’ll see that they were made for one another. I seriously need another book about these two. Pretty sure I’m going to go through some Dalton and Grace withdrawals here pretty soon.
Again, I loved the secondary characters in this story! The banter between Jackson, Griffin, Dalton, Zach, and Mason is fantastic. I also really enjoyed seeing a lot more of Hadley and Delia. The friendship between these two women is fantastic. I can’t wait to see how the friendship develops between Hadley, Delia, and Grace. It’s going to be great! I am so ready for the next story and all my favorite characters!
Overall, I give this story a 5/5. I adore Dalton and Grace so much. I need more of them! Dalton is my favorite guy from the Mercenaries Series. I enjoyed seeing a different side to Dalton that wasn’t so sarcastic, standoffish, and dark. His character development is truly amazing. Grace is such a badass female lead as well. I love how S. Massery writes her female leads. The women are strong and fighters. I can’t wait to see what the next female lead character will be like (girl-space-friend specially lol). Oh, and Wyatt. I need more about Wyatt too. I’m not so sure how I feel about him. I need more! I can’t wait to see where the next adventure in the Mercenaries series takes me.
This is another great book in the series and I love it!
Grace was a little different from our other characters as she really had no idea how much her character was in danger and why. She still believed that her dad had so much power and could protect her. I loved that she was independent and wanted nothing to do with her dad’s lifestyle at all. Yet she found herself being controlled by Javier and Marco with what they wanted for her future.
Dalton was such an awesome character and I loved how he risked so much to save Grace from being sold right at the beginning. His life definitely took a turn after that but I was impressed at what he was willing to give up to save her.
So one thing that was getting to me was how they kept being found time after time and I wasn’t sure if Grace was telling her dad things or what or if she had some sort of tracker on her but they just couldn’t escape.
I loved who was helping Dalton and the story behind it which was already brought up in previous books but it’s like everything is coming together for Dalton and the other former members of Scorpion.
The dinner party at Javier’s was completely shocking and It definitely surprised me. I was so mad at Sal and everything he did.
My heart broke so many times for Dalton and everything he had to endure in this book at the hands of Sal and Marco. I was so mad at everyone who did the wrong thing as my heart couldn’t take much more.
I was extremely relieved at the end of the book for what Dalton did as I was once again shocked at what Sal was prepared to do.
The very end was awesome and I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Grace Jones is the daughter of Sal, a mob enforcer who works for Javier Argento but when she is almost sold into human trafficking she is saved by a mysterious man. Now she finds herself going to be married off to Javier’s son, Marco, a man she hates more than anything. Dalton Kavanaugh was once a member of Scorpion Industries but after he rescues Grace he leaves town knowing the mob will put a hit on him for ruining their plans. Yet there is something about Grace that Dalton can’t stay away from and he finds himself back in town for her. When Grace realizes she needs to tread a fine line with how she can keep herself safe will she give up Dalton to keep away from Marco? Will Grace realize that Dalton may be the only one on her side in time? This is another great book in the series and I love it! Grace was a little different from our other characters as she really had no idea how much her character was in danger and why. She still believed that her dad had so much power and could protect her. I loved that she was independent and wanted nothing to do with her dad’s lifestyle at all. Yet she found herself being controlled by Javier and Marco with what they wanted for her future.
