Broken Mercenaries #2

Angel of Death

Rate this book
Griffin
I’ve been living in the darkness for so long, I’ve forgotten what the light feels like.

Secrecy has kept me alive, because the amount of people who want me dead? Let's just say it's a long list. When my identity gets into the wrong hands, the person I hold most dear in the world is thrown into danger. Shedding my darkness and rescuing Hadley from my enemies is an easy choice to make.

If only I didn’t have to rescue her from herself, as well.

Hadley
My guardian angel—the boy I almost fell in love with—disappeared five years ago.

When he returns, hunting men who want to use me against him, my relief is overshadowed by doubt. I’ve been holding onto my own secrets for far too long, and learning to trust Griffin again doesn’t come easily. He wants to sweep me away to Europe, where I always dreamed of going, to keep me safe.

If only my dream wasn’t about to turn into a nightmare.

This deliciously slow burn childhood friends-to-lovers romantic suspense is the second installment in the Broken Mercenaries series. Make sure to read BLOOD SKY before devouring this thrilling story.

Angel of Death tells us about Griffin and Hadley. For me it’s so far the best book in the series.
Griffin and Hadley have known each other since teenage years but circumstances parted them for five years. And now they’re trying to reconcile, but at the same time they have to fight with Griffin’s past and Hadley’s illness.
I liked that the author put attention in explaining the life Griffin and his friends had in the past. We get to see a glimpse of what it looked like.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Book two in the Broken Mercenaries, Angel of Death is a standalone couple but should be read in order to follow the story. In book two we get Hadley and Griffin's story. The pair were childhood friends who developed into something more. In addition, we also get a fast-paced suspenseful romance. What more can you want?

Hadley Quinn Weatherly has “almost” been in love with Griffin Anders for as long as she can remember but he isn’t a constant in her life and only briefly pops in and out over the years. Unfortunately lately she has been sick and now strange things have been happening and Griffin has come back.
Griffins Anders worked for Scorpion Industries in the past and now someone is after his two greatest weaknesses, Judge Arthur Wallace and Hadley. Griffin will do whatever it takes to keep both of them safe from his enemies but what happens if seeing the truth frightens Hadley?
When Griffin feels he is forced to take Hadley away to keep her safe how far will he go to protect those he loves? Will he lose Hadley when she sees who he has had to become to survive?
This was such a great book and I am loving this series so far! I realize this is only the second book but as I read more and more, I know I want the next one asap!
I loved Hadley and one huge reason was that she was as strong as she could be with so much happening in her life. She wanted everything to be on her terms and knew certain things were inevitable but she was going to control her own life with what was left.
Griffin was a bit more of a complex character given his past and trying to keep a lot of his life there and not have it brought to the present. I loved his friendships with the other former Scorpion boys and how we get to know more and more about certain characters with each book.
It was interesting to me at the beginning how Griffin and Hadley kept being located but gradually everything fell into place and things made sense but right away you know something was up. I thought Dalton and Zach were a great addition and helped with Hadley. There was a lot of mystery around Il Fantasma and I wondered if that had something to do with how Griffin and Hadley were being located all of the time.
I loved Portugal for Hadley but at the same time my heart really broke for her being alone. I loved her friendship with Elizabeth and it was super interesting what she revealed to Hadley.
I was definitely shocked at the twist of who was involved and how everything regarding that was left.
I was so happy when Griffin finally got his head in the right place and was able to find his happy ever after with Hadley. I also love where they are settling down as I am hoping that this is the start of something there.
The end was awesome and I can’t wait for more!

Twists and turns

4.5 stars
The second installment of this series was just as action packed as the first. I enjoyed Griffin and Hadley's story. Packed with a great storyline and lovable characters this book will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I really liked Griffin he was a favorite of mine from the first book so it was great to get his story. Excellent writing coupled with a group of crazy characters this ended up being a great addition to the series.

This is the second book in the Broken Mercenaries series and I would guess that there will be at least 5 books (maybe 6) in the series each featuring one of the guys introduced in the first two books. I was drawn in from the start and the fast-paced action and suspense elements kept me turning the pages.

This is an amazing sequel to Blood Sky, although I would definitely say this could be read as a stand-alone as this focuses on a new couple, but of course it would be best to read in order to not spoil the events of the first book. Griffin is a loner and tries to protect those he cares about from his dark side. Although he has known Hadley for most of his life, and kept a watchful eye over her throughout the years, he is reluctant to pursue more since he doesn’t want to hurt her. Well the time has come that he needs to take her away to keep her safe from his past.

This story is like a roller coaster. There are so many twists and turns and they are on a full throttle adventure ride. This book checks all the boxes including some funny moments, romantic moments, and a ton of suspenseful moments. Again, I truly enjoyed the other mercenary guys (Jackson, Dalton, Mason and Zach) and am so anxious to see how their stories play out. Although we do get the full story of Hadley and Griffin in this book, there is a larger mystery that is yet to be resolved in the series.

I am anxiously awaiting the release of Morning Star as there are definitely unresolved elements happening with the rest of Griffin’s team.

"When I was younger, I had a guardian angel. He watched over me, and I... I tried not to fall in love with him. There were countless times he came to my rescue, and even when he moved away, he always came back for me- until he stopped." Hadley, Angel of Death

This is an amazing sequel to Blood Sky, although I would definitely say this could be read as a stand alone. Griffin is such a strong, loner of a man who tends to self isolate himself. He has known Hadley for most of his life, and kept a watchful eye over her. Hadley is a woman with her own secrets, and living life on a clock. When Griffin reappears in her life he brings danger and adventure, and maybe if she's lucky something more.

This story is like a roller coaster. So many ups and downs in their adventure keeps you wanting to turn the page. It has it's funny moments, romantic moments, and suspenseful moments. Everything you could possibly desire all in one place. The supporting characters are also incredibly well written, and leave you dying to read their stories. The loyalty between the mercenaries (Jackson, Griffin, Dalton, Mason, and Zach) is something that I think everyone should have, but unfortunately we don't all get.

"Hadley, I'm fucking terrified of planes and I've been on three in the past six months. If that isn't loyalty, I don't know what is." Dalton, Angel of Death

I have read S. Massery's other books as well, and love seeing how her style and skill develop and improve with each work. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the Broken Mercenaries series.

“S. Massery has completely outdone herself with Angel of Death! “She has delivered a beyond 5 star read!”

The blurb completely speaks for itself. What you will find when reading is once you start, you can’t stop. Your on a runaway train and you don’t want to get off!!

Griffin and Haley’s lives have been intertwined since their childhood. The connection that these two have is unlike anything I have read before, the depth of the characters was outstanding!

Griffin has never been one to stay in one place too long, fearing for harm that could come to Haley from his past. In his eyes he is a horrible man with a dark stained past. Haley has always been waiting for Griffin to come back, but when he does she’s always left with disappointment. When he finally gets close enough to see her, he realizes that something is terribly wrong.

With Griffin’s past coming to collect on his sins, and Haley’s health failing who will be left in the end?

"Because no matter how long he stays... He always leaves."

BRAVO...S. Massery nailed this one!!! This series is shaping up to be one hell of a ride. The suspense, and the twists in the story will keep you on the edge of your seat. Griffin and Hadley had a special connection that endured despite time and distance.

"It's one thing to let Griffin into my home. Into my bed. It's another entirely to let him into my heart. It's a shame that he's been there all along, and there's no erasing that."

I loved Griffin and Hadley's story and I highly recommend reading this book. Angel of Death, book 2 in the Broken Mercenaries series by S. Massery is an EPIC read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE Angel of Death! I was so excited to read this book after reading Blood Sky and S. Massery did not disappoint.

Angel of Death is a fast paced, action packed, emotional ride that will have you gripping your seat while begging for more. Griffin - he's this enigma, literally known as the Angel of Death, but he's multifaceted like the most precious gem. And Hadley, she's so damn strong yet she's harboring her own secrets.

One of the things I love most about this series is the camaraderie between the guys. They can go months without talking to each other but if one of them needs help, the rest of them are there to help.

If you have not started the Broken Mercenaries series, I highly recommend these books. And I'm very much looking forward to Morning Star.

Shew! This was a roller coaster ride! Griffin and Hadley each had their own baggage....but they also knew each other as children.

Griffin was a true protector; he made sure he was always there when Hadley needed help...but, stayed in the shadows. Hadley was dealing with some things that would be difficult for anyone to have to go through.

I enjoyed continuing the series and I can’t wait for Dalton’s book! Because that little tidbit at the end has me wanting more!

I was given the honor to beta-read this amazing book. I read the first one as a ARC and absolutely loved Delia and Jackson so I already knew I would love this one but it went over my expectations.
NEVER SLOW and NEVER BORING! This was such a great story from page one to the last. I loved every word and ever character, even the bad ones. Can't wait for more in this series & from this author.

My first thought after finishing this book was finally it’s over, which is... Yeah okay so again this book was average, mediocre, boring idrk any more adjectives so. But yeah it was just boring I never felt like I enjoyed either of the characters, they both never had set personalities and kinda just acted randomly.

Hadley: I never got like a finger on her or her personality like she did things that were cool and badass but she didn’t have her own actual personality. Like what made her tick...we have no idea. So yeah she was a blank slate of a character tbh, not annoying but not compelling. Also her cancer dear god why did we have to go with that. Like I admired her for deciding to just live out the rest of her days in Paris, but the whole bonemarrow thing and griffin fixing her was cringe. It just felt like she always had to rely on him for everything and never did shit like on her own, like I got the whole guardian angel shit but can she not do anything herself. Like she had no job, no speciality, couldn’t really fight (and we she learned she still barely did anything, like her whole personality and world revolved around this man. She was understanding about everything to the point it was just like girl come on.

Griffin: where do we even start. The whole “darkness” thing is so cringy it literally makes me want to laugh everytime he mentioned it. Blahbkah i habe a darkness like okay we get it go turn on a lamp or smthg. K for his doctor skills, they seemed to be fine or whatever. The angel of death nickname was undeserved and seemed dumb. Like we learned why he got it book 1 but like bruhhh he’s a doctor hello?? Also missed opportunity for Hadley to call him angel. But yeah again we got it the bad boy some anger issues has “darkness” commitment issues etc etc. He was an okay character like him fighting was cool but like again it just was so boring because the plot was boring. One thing I loved so much was him and delias friendship like that was so superior I loved it.
“Hey,” Delia says behind me. I look back at her, trying to wipe the look off my face. “It’ll be okay.”
“I feel unprepared,” I admit. Everyone else is upstairs. It’s just Delia and I, and she reaches out to me. Her thumb brushes my cheek.
“Listen to me,” she orders. “It. Will. Be. Okay.”
“And if it isn’t?”

She looks away. “Then you leave Griffin Anders behind.”

Like calls to like. It’s why we’ve been friends since Jackson brought us together—she understands me. And I understood her the moment I met her outside of her cousin’s house. I recognized her fury, her fear, her empathy. I helped her squash the latter so many years ago.
.....Like their friendship was so goals I loved it. And then lastly his whole job didn’t make sense, like mafias needed doctors and didn’t just hire him as their own like idk it didn’t make sense to me. But yeah they were okay.

Now here’s the thing the whole book dalton was like by far the most intresting character like everyone else was so boring.

Now random quotes that I have an opinion on:

“I wish I could suck the cancer from your blood”
Huh??? Like what type of freakshow shit like mf get help. Idk like that’s so fucking weird to say like please seek mental help.

“No, that’s not it. I try not to think about the rest, though. It brings out a darker side”
I can’t take anything seriously in the book and shit like this is why. Darker side....ma just go to therapy bruh.

“I just want to die,” I whisper. “Why can’t you just let me?”
This was one of the moments I loved Hadley. Like I had no desire for him to save her or whatever I liked that she wanted to live out her last days in thr place of her dreams. Seeing how would react with her death seemed interesting. Of course those dreams were crushed like every other hope I had for this book.

“Because I don’t fucking care okay? You have a darkness in you, but I already figured on that because of all the bloodshed that follows you around.”
This shit just makes me laugh like I’m sorry the whole darkness thing is so fucking funny. Mf needed to just go into light.

“I tried my hand at....getting involved.” His eyes go dark. “And I ruined her.”
Bad boy stereotypes, gotta love em. This is dalton btw and it’s just like bruh please stop before I start laughing.

K yeah to end off pretty average book tbh.

This story was an adventure from the beginning, pulled me right in and had me up till 3:30 in the morning devouring it. I loved seeing the rest of the team again and really liked Dalton in this book and can't wait to read his story. I liked Hadley for the most part. Her emotions about death made sense to me and I felt for her. She was a little weak for me though. It works through most of the book due to her condition, but the fact that she dated and stayed with men (MORE THAN ONE) who pushed her around, dropped my opinion of her a little. But I was glad she had a bit of backbone to stand up for herself in the hospital and not let Griffin off the hook immediately.
Griffin was a hard one for me. I loved him! And I was so mad at him! I loved his need to protect her. I loved that he had been in her life for so long. I loved that he kept parts of her with him always, showing that he had always loved her. BUT.. I didn't understand how he could leave her WHILE SHE'S DYING!! That doesn't scream love. Hell, that doesn't even whisper love. And not only does he leave her to maybe live or die, to for sure suffer, but he doesn't even leave her with her family or a friend. He deserts her all alone. WTH?!? I couldn't really forgive him for that. And he's not really tender and sweet to her throughout the book either. But neither was Jackson and Delia, so I guess that's just this author's style. Not a whole lot of tenderness and love seeping from her characters until the end.
Although both these first 2 stories have been a bit outlandish and unbelievable, I'll keep reading to see what happens, how she ties it all together in the end!

Hadley & Griffin

Hadley has a lot of strength that’s not always the easiest to see. I never really care so much for the main female characters as I did her. Her story is just one that hits and sticks with you.

Griffin is former Navy and also former Scorpion. He’s a trained medic and known for bringing those back to life on deaths door. He’s also known for the opposite as well and has been leading down a dark path.

These two have history that goes back to their youth. As they get older he always pops up to protect her, but also misses out on crucial parts of her life that effect them.

I have yet to read many books that make me emotional but there was so many parts that had me near tears. Mainly because these are characters so well written that you truly begin to feel for them and their situations. I love how not only the main characters are involved but all the other supporting are so fluidly involved that you feel the bonds. It was not without amazing suspense as well. Not predictable and gives you a rush of emotions in all the ways.

Whoa, I really enjoyed Blood Sky and was excited to see that we would be given Griffin's story next. I had no idea that there was so much hidden between the quiet guy in the first book. The depth of his feelings were amazing and the author did such a great job with it!

This is definitely an emotional roller coaster with not just Griffin's feelings but also Hadley's as well. Just WOW! All I can say is buckle up buttercup because you are in for one crazy ride that will have you wishing for second chances but knowing that anything can happen.

All in all, I loved this crazy thrill ride and I highly recommend you checking it out. I do recommend checking out Blood Sky first because even though they are somewhat standalones, there is an aspect that ties the books together and will have your jaw dropping! 4.5 outta 5 stars from me!

PS: Thank you to S Massery and Candi Kane PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!

This is the second book in the Broken Mercenaries Series, a great Romantic Suspense. Each book follows one couple, with an ongoing plot through the Series. I LOVE this Series! Hadley and Griffin's story has it all! Captivating, emotional, suspenseful, fast-paced and action packed. This is also an amazing second chance to love. There is a lot going on in this story. Hadley is a wonderful character, strong, and smart. Griffin (Angel of Death) is handsome, intriguing, and protective. I loved to follow them in their journey. The supporting characters are great, and they have an important part in this story. Now, I am looking forward to read the next book in the Series, Morning Star, Dalton's story. If you like Romantic Suspense, this one is definitely for you. I HIGHLY recommend it! S. Massery's writing is refreshing, entertaining, and captivating.

I have always been fascinated by the angel of death. And this book just proved why he's everything.

Ever since Blood Sky I have been wondering who would be Griffin's love interest and how it would all play out.

I was not expecting this! I loved it all so much!

Hadley and Griffin's chemistry was so strong and I loved their slow burn friends to lovers romance!

There was steamy, action, dark romance!!!

I loved getting to know more about the characters and their past which I always loved.

This series is definitely a must read and this book is amazing!

I was most looking forward to Angel of Death out of the whole series. It did not disappoint and is my favorite of the bunch! Griffin and Hadley's story was so emotional. I loved how they knew each other from childhood and that even then Griffin looked out for her. I felt bad for Hadley and all she had to go through but she was a good strong character. I absolutely love that when everything goes sideways all the guys come in and help out. They are always there for each other. The ending was a huge surprise and now I really need more books in the series to see how that all works out! Beautifully written and interesting plot made for a wonderful read. Fantastic book in a fantastic series and I highly recommend!

Griffin has been protecting Hadley from afar, hes always been her guardian angel.
Hadley hasn't told Griffin why she was in hospital determined to have things her way.
Unfortunately someone has other ideas for the two of them bringing the team together again.
