Elephants on Barsk are unable to conceive prior to "bonding." But then again, elephants can't fly.

I loved this book. While it's technically a prequel to the excellent BARSK series, it does manage to stand on its own. The story expands on the thoughtful world created by Schoen and gives the reader a standalone tale of family, love, and the conflict between following your dreams and fulfilling your responsibilities.

Schoen writes the true history behind the Barsk legend of Pholo, the Fant who can fly, with interesting implications for the main Barsk novels! I love the creativity of how Fant (anthropomorphic elephants) society is organized and seeing Pholo operate within those constraints, and Granny Rosie was a damned delight.

Interesting world

This was an interesting world, and the characters were detailed and fun as well. Would have been good if they could have kept doing the new and fun thing they figured out, but it made sense why they stopped. I recommend this book.
