This is an excellent education in formal, humble expressions in Japanese. Rampo is fun to read for reasons other than his odd plots. Read the unabridged, unedited texts to receive a slow introduction to archaic kanji and expressions which use them.
The plot itself is entertaining. Published in 1925 when none of today’s tech toys were available.
There are several audio versions of this story available on YouTube - good for tuning one’s ear and tongue.
I did not read this particular publication. I use Aozora Bunko where unedited Rampo stories are available. Goodreads does not have a way to track what one reads on Aozora Bunko, so one must improvise.
