I feel it welcoming me back with open arms each time a new novella comes out so I can hang out with Dane, Mercury, and the dragon kits on a new family adventure.

Dragon Soldier is book five in a series that must be read in order.

The last installment, Dragon Detective, left off with Nickel severely injured and a long lost dragon found and returned to freedom with their big family. This story picks up and continues on with the second half of this particular stories arc with Nickel and Platinum now in the forefront with Dane and Mercury and the other kits and their friends and co-workers now taking the backseat.

I enjoy how the author advanced the stories forward over the years so that now the older kits are the new generation of adults and getting involved in the supernatural crime solving with Dane and Mercury.

They still have their immature moments, but Nickel and Platinum's story of coming of age and figuring out how to adapt to adult responsibility, injuries, duty, and first love was engaging and fun. The story's narration was shared by both dragons. Nickel is the tough soldier workaholic who is recovering from wounds and makes an impatient patient while Platinum is free from the labs and lived his whole life in captivity so now is figuring out how it all works and how to be part of a loud, boisterous family.

The action part of the plot was there, but was more of the side story in the background that showcased the culmination of the character side of the plot with an example of Nickel and Platinum's first big case together.

I would have liked to have had more of my favorite Lumie dragon, but the antics of 'Ron, Chrome, and the rest was still a source of fun and delight. Love this family of dragons, their home life, and when they work together to solve paranormal crime.

So, if you want a bit of cozy, heartwarming, and humor to your M/M Urban Fantasy, these are great. They are light stuff all around and I can't wait to curl up with the next one or maybe I'll snag an older one from the series and re-read when I need a perk me up.

A direct continuation of the previous book, this second story about Nickel and Platinum is even more action-packed and full of revelations than the first part. They start out as “brothers in arms” fighting the evil scientists, but there is also a slowly blooming romance between them which is very sweet. Not that they have much time to follow their instincts at first – making sure those who want to use dragons to experiment on are stopped comes first.

Since that time, Nickel's grown up, done his schooling and is training to be a private investigator. HE has helped Dane in his supernatural consulting business for years, while also tracking down the rogue pods of humans still experimenting on dragons. He recently helped save Platinum, the male air dragon who had been in captivity and testing for most of his 18 year old life.

Platinum is the egg twin of Chrome, Nickel's adopted sister, but Platinum's air magic has been mutated by the scientists and his emotional state can induce changes in the local weather. Having been raised in captivity, Platinum is shy of being in the company of people, and some of Nickel's adopted siblings are a little too much for him. Platinum struggles with nightmares, but he's trying to build his skills in both magic and his education--learning to read and write for the first time. It is through the love of Dane and Mercury that Platinum finally has a home.

In the rescue of Platinum, Nickel's magic was dangerously drained. He's having a hard time regaining his strength and this is really frustrating. He's taken years to build his magic up, and now he's barely able to walk to the bathroom. But, he and Platinum are sharing a room, and that makes it easy to lean on one another. Not that it takes Nickel long to realize that Platinum is his mate.

The casual way they connect is sweet and tender. I loved how Dane helped both Platinum and Nickel with (sometimes) secret plans to take care of one another. Platinum's skills in magic are growing by the day, and Platinum delights in helping outfit their new office to accommodate Nickel better. Meanwhile, Nickel has big plans to make a life for him and Platinum--in a much quieter little cottage they can call home. Ultimately, they won't feel safe if they can't track down the last of the scientists who'd gotten away from Nickel. But they are both necessary to the investigation, giving Platinum the agency he's needed to help him cope with his trauma. And, there's a wholesome family vibe to this story where each of the dragons is essential to the security of dragons, at home and abroad.

I've loved this series and would recommend it for people who are fans of light romances and heavy paranormal. ...more

Mell Eight is a new author to me, and I just read this whole series back to back. I’ll give a brief description of the series before I talk about this book.

In the first book, Dragon Consultant, we meet Dane, the owner of Supernatural Consultants, and leader of a supernatural/paranormal region. He’s been asked to look in to a report of dragons harassing airplanes. He finds a sick adult dragon shifter, and a pack of assorted younger dragons hiding in the woods. He packs them up, and takes them home. Only to fall in love with Mercury, the adult dragon shifter, and help him raise the pack of orphan dragon kits. The story continues on through the series, Dane and Mercury and their kits, trying to discover who has been capturing dragons, in the egg, and as youngsters, and performing experiments on them. A couple of bad guys come and go, but they are always looking for the boss. They are also always looking for Platinum, a dragon they missed rescuing.

Now this fifth book in the series features Nickel, one of the older of the dragon kits, now a young man working for Dane’s firm, as he recovers from the ass whooping he received in the last book. Nickel made a bad decision, got roughed up pretty good, and has been confined to bed. The good thing that came out of the mess in the last book, was the discovery of Platinum, who has been reunited with his sister, and brought in to the fold. This is the story of Nickel and Platinum discovering love…. and the ultimate fight against the enemy they have spent ten years searching for.

I have enjoyed my week reading these books, I’m always up for a new shifter series, and I haven’t read many about dragon shifters. I’m fascinated with the creation of the world an author of paranormal books sets their characters in. They set the rules, and each seems to have their own system. Magic, shifting, lives, etc, are all unique to the author. This series had some great world building, and I loved the urban fantasy feel of it. This is our world, but with dragons and magic! How cool!

I liked Mercury and Dane as characters as I read the series, and I loved that they took in this group of orphaned young to raise as their own. We are shown lots of scenes of them caring for the kits, lots of dinners, lots of play time, and when bad shit goes down, one protects while the other fights. I loved all of that. But. Even having said that, I wish a little less time had been spent on the interaction with all of the kits. It got to be a bit much for me after a while. The other issue I have is that there IS NO SEX IN ANY OF THESE BOOKS! Dane and Mercury do get it on now and then, but it is all off page, or very brief. I didn’t think I’d miss it, but apparently I did!

This book has the same issues as I’ve had with the others. Too much time spent on the kits, and no sex. Nickel was a hard character for me to get to like, he’s an odd mix of child and adult for the first three books, starts to come alive in the fourth, then spends most of the fifth book injured and out of commission. This does give him time to get to know Platinum, and I did appreciate that. But these are young men, falling in love. I wanted a physical manifestation of that love. Even if it was the off page sex we saw earlier in the series with Dane and Mercury. I’m not even sure they have shared a kiss by the end of the fifth book. I was actually surprised how much I missed the sex…

As I said, Mell Eight is a new to me author. I did like her writing style, and for the most part I liked the characters. I loved Platinum particularly, and liked Nickel. I had issues with parts of the series which continued in to this book, but overall I enjoyed all of the books. They are fairly light, lots of humor since there are so many youngsters involved, and the overall plot was well done. I liked this book a bit more than the others plot-wise, a little more happens in it that got my attention. The ending was great as well.

If you have read the other books, you have GOT to read this one. If not, it is not a stand alone book, you’ll need to read the series to know what’s going on. I’m glad I read all of them back to back, and glad I was able to review this one. I’ll be checking out more books by this author. ...more

This tale picks up right where Dragon Detective left off, with Platinum watching over the sleeping Nickel, and Nickel just waking up. Unlike the other books, the relationship between these two is firmly front and centre. Which is good because there’s a hefty dose of insta-love here, so it was nice to see both of them feeling a little unnerved and unsure of their feelings and slowly getting to know each other.

It’s actually pretty sweet. Nickel has always been the strong dragon, determin 3.5 stars.

But he’s in recovery here, struggling to even get out of bed, let alone get back in the office and back to work. Not that he doesn’t try. I liked that it wasn’t easy for him, even if I also felt for him as he struggles with depression.

Platinum is sweet, but a little light on personality, poor thing. He’s been locked up for most of his life and he’s struggling to adjust to living with this loud bunch of boisterous dragons. I liked how Nickel became his sanctuary. I would have liked it if we’d seen more stuff between him and his egg twin, though. I think it would be nice if Platinum could bond with others beyond Nickel, because as sweet as they are together, he doesn’t have to be so alone anymore.

Away from these two, there’s still a search for the bad guys going on, while the rest of the kits are up to mischief as usual. The earth kits in particular were clearly having a lot of fun in the background. I wish there’d been more Lumie – but I always wish that, because he’s my mixed up magical favourite.

On the whole, this is a quieter, more romantic addition to the series, giving Nickel a glimpse of life beyond his quest to destroy his enemies. It’s cute like the other books, but not quite as funny, though it still contains the warm charm I’m used to. However, if you’re new to this series, don’t start here because you’ll miss out on a lot. Which would be a shame, because in terms of fun dragon families, there are few I enjoy as much as this adorable bunch. I look forward to seeing what Mell Eight comes up with next.

Finally the interaction between Platinum and Nickel. Most of the book covered Nickel's slow recovery but it was nice to see how the two bonded. As the kits are all growing up, it was also nice to see development in terms of what they wanted to do in the future. The plot picked up towards the end with the baddie appearing again but it was all resolved nicely. The only sad thing was that there wasn't much Lumie. I wonder what the next book would be about.

A great continuation of Nickel and Platinum’s story which began in Dragon Detective. I love seeing Dane and Mercury's kits growing up, I really enjoy these characters and I hope that there will be many more visits to the fascinating world of the Supernatural Consultant series.

This book concentrates on Nickel and Platinum. Nickel healing from their last adventure and Platinum learning about family and doing some healing of his own.

These books are always packed with the young dragon’s antics and Dane and Mercury’s parenting of them while chasing bad guys. This one added the joy of Nickel and Platinum learning they are mates. I liked that tough, almost aloof Nickel, felt so much for his new mate.

I love this series. It is so entertaining, even when it's not action packed like this one. Yes there was action but it as more about the relationship building between Nickel and Platinum

Book 5 what can I say except I love this series so much the dragons in it are wonderful so caring.
This book moves us past Mercury and Dane to Nickel and Platinum the rescued dragon.
Nickel is recovering after his fight with the lead scientist and is trying to get his strength back.
He wakes and meets Platinum properly and just click. Platinum gets to meet and share time with his egg twin Zinc as well.
It's a great story about recovering and gaining strength from those around you. ...more

Thanks to a series like the Supernatural Consultant, I've found myself trying some books outside of my usual genres. Eight's books just work so well for me. There is magic, there are dragons, but the heart of every one of these stories is the characters and their relationships. Dragon Soldier picks up three weeks after Dragon Detective ends and Mell Eight continues the magical relationship between Nickel and Platinum.

Once again, Eight concentrates on relationships and in this case the comfort needed for Platinum to move forward in his new life. While Nickel needs to come to terms with the results of the rescue operation and his injuries.

Dragon Soldier does not have a lot of action, but it is a slow burn new adult romance between two injured souls. Eight once again hit ...more

Definitely to be read as part of the series otherwise I think it would be a mite confusing!
Nice development between Platinum and Nickel - gentle but just what both needed.
The young kits still causing trouble - not as much Lumie as I'd have liked!!!
As much about the comfort and security of home as well as learning to fly te nest - literally and metaphorically!

Overall I really enjoyed the continuation of this series and the parallel/nod to a few things from the first book. I did wish that some characters spent more time with either Nickel or Platinum especially when things got distressing for either of them. But the plot usually just waited for them to interact with each other to somewhat resolve their feelings.

Dane and Mercury’s little family isn’t so little any more. They’ve not only gained a few more members in the years that they’ve been together, their kits are growing up. Even the oldest of the kits need some guidance and boundaries though and as responsible as Nickel is, he still has a few lessons to learn.
