Omg what a book!!! Abby is a single mum, law enforcement agent the negotiator. She has to juggle her work, kids and of course the ex husband. She has a chilling past that she can’t let influence her job or her future, which becomes almost impossible when her past comes knocking. Abby is an amazing charter that grabbed me from the very first chapter too the very last word!! And the world and charters that are built around her are just as enthralling. Seeing the story from everyones prospective gi ...more

Abby Mullens is just your average single mom trying to raise her two kids while saving lives at work. Her current case involves the kidnapping of a young boy whose mother has a past with Abby that she'd like to forget about. Until the case takes a turn and she ends up in a place that brings all her memories flooding back, forced to face the past and what really happened that night. But someone has been lying to her, and its not her teenage daughter.

This story was amazing. It was a little slow at

A Deadly Influence

Abby Mullen is contacted by an old friend when her son is kidnapped. Abby and Eden share a past and that soon comes spilling into the present as Abby races to find Eden's son alive.
This is an absolutely gripping thriller by Mike Omer. The characters are in my opinion perfect and the story gripping and full of twists.
Highly recommended.

Rounded up to 4/5

My Kindle freebie for March and WOWZA what a ride! I stepped away from Kindle first reads, because the selections were so awful, but this book was great. The main character actually had depth and a back story, which weaves it’s waves throughout the book. Great mystery and well paced, too.

Oh, and that back story sets up Book 2...which I just pre-ordered.

A Police Negotiator Helps in A Kidnapping Case

The novel opens finding the heroine, Lieutenant Abby Mullen, on the 52nd floor of an unfinished skyscraper in New York. There was a man out on the scaffolding contemplating jumping. She went out onto the scaffolding to talk him down. After much effort she was successful.

The novel shifts to the crime of this novel. The perpetrator is thoroughly infatuated by Gabrielle, a teenage Instagram personality, and hatches a plan to kidnap her brother, Nathan,

A Deadly Influence intrigued me right from the start then pushed me to the edge of my seat for the entire second half.
NYPD Lt. Abby Mullen is great at what she does. As a by-the-textbook hostage negotiator instructor, she knows her stuff. Though as a busy single mother of two, she is sometimes out of her depth. When a kidnapping which involves someone from her tragic past falls into her lap, she cannot refuse getting involved.
The sweet, carefree eight-year-old Nathan is the innocent victim in

Wish I'd paid attention to the fact that this is one of at least two books in a possible series and this one is an Amazon First Read, so that means it hasn't been published yet, and it could be months before the second book is published. All of which would be fine if this one didn't end on a major cliffhanger. I have a pretty good guess as to what the answer is to the cliffhanger, but I really, really don't like it when books end in suspense like that. Chapters, fine, I know that's designed to k ...more

I could not put this book down! I ended up downloading the audio book from Audible so I could take it on my morning walk and finish the last hour and a half. It's that good.

First, the main character is brilliant. I'm a big fan of Omer's and I love the Zoe Bentley, but I loved Abby even more! Abby is a really relatable female character who is strong but also human. I LOVED her conversations where she has to practice conversations she has to have with her ex and how she can't keep a lid on it. So

Promising start for a series w story arc. Partial ending w a cliffhanger.

Protagonist Abby Fletcher—an NYPD lieutenant, hostage negotiator, and a single mom of two—is contacted by a stranger, Edie Fletcher, who wants Abby to find her missing son. Eight-yr. old Nathan’s kidnappers demand an impossible $5 million ransom. Later, Abby learns that Edie is a childhood friend—from a horrific past Abby can’t/doesn’t want to remember. This trope has Abby flashing back to her terrible, almost-forgotten ch

This is a four star, not one star, book

Ever wonder about survivors of being a survivor of membership in a cult? Probably not. Mike Omer wondered, and wrote a riveting exploration, in this first of a two book Abby Mullen series.

Abby is a hostage negotiator. She is one of the best. What she endured during her childhood and the aftermath gave her an empathy most negatiators can't fake.

Eden Fletcher has basically the same background as Abby. They grew up together until the tragedy which changed the

Abby Mullen is a hostage negotiator and she's one of the best. She has a dark past from when she was 7 involving a cult. Which plays a huge part in who she is.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

Abby Mullen is a police negotiator and a survivor of a cult (think Waco), who now keeps tabs on other cults in her area in case she ever has to deal with them. When the son (Nathan) of another survivor (Eden) is kidnapped she doesn't know what to do so she calls Abby, who she hadn't spoken with since they were children. Abby then gets the ball rolling in helping to find Nathan and eventually learns his kidnapping may be cult-related

Abby Mullen, divorced mother of two, has been through a lot in her 39 years. As a child, she lived with her parents in a cult when a standoff turned deadly. As one of only 3 survivors, she had a lot to work through but turned that experience into a new talent for dealing with worst case scenarios. Then she hears from Eden Fletcher, the other girl who lived through the events surrounding the fire at the Wilcox Family compound. Eden's 8-year-old son, Nathan, has been kidnapped! I discovered Mike Omer’s books a couple years ago. I loved his Glenmore Park and the Zoe Bentley series. I was a bit disappointed when the Zoe Bentley series ended. I wondered what could the author could do that would meet or exceed the quirky Zoe? Abby Mullin is a worthy successor. Abby’s not the typical police/FBI officer. She’s specifically a negotiator. The book opens with Abby talking a jumper off a ledge displaying her ability to de-escalate a tense situation. Over and over she used her sk ...more

This is an absolutely brilliant new series from Mike Omer. I have read all his Zoe Bentley thrillers and his Glenmore Park series and love them all, so I was delighted to discover that he had created a new character and couldn’t wait to get stuck in. Mr Omer has a way of injecting humour into the most serious of scenes, to lighten the darkness, and yet still manage to keep the reader on the edge of their seat, gripping the book tightly in all the tense moments. This book really takes us on a rol ...more

Can't wait for the second book in the series..

I thought about giving this book 4 stars, because of the cliff hanger ending. But other than that it is a page turner, with fascinating characters, and plotting. The information about how cults work, how they keep their followers under their influence sounded a lot like what is happening today. Cults are filled with lost souls, looking for meaning in their lives, and fall completely under the spell of their leader. Abby is our protagonist, a hostage

First I want to thank you for the advanced readers copy. This is my honest and true opinion.

I like this book from the very beginning. Single mom with a teenager (who she negotiates with like psychopaths from her job) plus her little boy. In the beginning and middle, I didn't quite understand what a hostage negotiator does, so I felt like Abby was playing detective, although I didn't understand her job in the investigation quite yet it was still very entertaining and a hard book to put down. A New Author for me...

Fairly new to Amazon Prime and this was one of the choices featured monthly that previews new releases (I hope I got that classification right). I vaguely recognized the authors name knowing that I had seen him on Amazon's website and read the synopsis of the story and was interested. To paraphrase the Knight in the Indiana Jones movie " you chose wisely"!
Always interested in a new story and a new main character I would gives this book four and a half stars if I could. The

I chose this book as one of Amazon Prime's free monthly picks. I noticed it was listed as "part 1" and I normally never choose these, as I hate the feeling of being "forced or tricked" into buying the next book to figure out the ending. However, none of the other picks for this month interested me, so I chose this one, hoping for the best. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The author writes an engaging story, with riveting characters, conversations and suspense. Main Character, Abby Mullen ...more

This was my Kindle First choice this month. I struggled to make a selection this time out as none really stood out for me. However, I got to 31% and I'd read enough. It just isn't for me. I never bother with stories based around cults and I did know this one had the ladies' pasts based in living in one but then it started heading to present-day ones as well and I glazed over. It just doesn't interest me in the least. I also wasn't a fan on the role-playing stuff she did with Will. I just found i ...more

This was a March Amazon First Reads book that I didn't read in March.

I say that because I didn't pay for the book; it was free with Prime.

This is also a genre a rarely read - children in danger. This is also a book that makes me glad my only child is male and an adult.

there are a lot of 'baddies' in the story. We have cults, Instagram stalkers, dastardly ex husbands.

Our main Character Abby Mullin is an NYPD 'negotiator' who is a single parent of two children. She is also a cult survivor (thin

This is the first in a new series. Abby Mullen is a crisis negotiator. But she’s also a divorcee and a mother of two. “They should insist all prospective negotiators have kids. Nothing prepares you better for crisis management.” Abby also grew up in a cult. Now, she’s involved with a kidnapping case. The mother happens to be another survivor of that cult. And it’s possible her child has been kidnapped by another cult the woman joined as an adult. Or is the kidnapper someone with a fetish for the ...more

It took me a week to read the first half of the book. Then in the second half I ran through it for two hours. Yes, I would have preferred the whole book to be exciting, unassuming. But the second half of the novel compensated for the bit flatness of the first half. I wanted to know what the end would be, whether Nathan would escape, what would happen to Abby, who was the kidnapper, and what would tie the whole story to the sect. For the most part, we get the answers, but at the end of the book, ...more

This is a very well-written, captivating story about a less-than-perfect New York City police lieutenant who finds herself in the midst of a difficult case that becomes deeply personal the further she penetrates the events leading to the ultimate showdown. Author Omer, although male, does an excellent job of bringing his readers into the mind of a real woman who is hindered by some exasperating personal shortcomings.

I liked the author’s last series so I’m sorry to say this book is not worth reading. I actually really like Abby, the negotiator, especially her funny takes on parenting but unfortunately there are a lot of other POVs. Every chapter jumps between characters and there were too many of them and most unlikeable and slow chapters that did not move the story forward. There is the kidnapper, the boy kidnapped and his mother as other POV. The kidnapper is obviously horrible and his chapters were tediou ...more

My sister found and recommended Mike Omer’s books. We read them at the same time and then discuss them when finished. Our own little book club. When this title came up in our Kindle First Reads we both clicked with zero hesitation. She wasn’t ready to read it yet, as she had a book loaned to her she had to finish first. I tried to wait for her, goodness knows I had plenty of other books to read, but I just couldn’t wait. Sorry, not sorry.

I’m not a “rehash the entire plot” kind of reviewer. Plen
