Jobless. Fiance-less. Spineless. That was Blake Campbell's self-assessment as she arrived for her much needed ten-day getaway at The Bar H Guest Ranch. A little horseback riding and girl time would surely wrench her weary heart back into some sort of normality. She was tired of feeling sorry for herself.
What she didn't expect, though, was a self- imposed guardian shadowing her all over the damn place and thwarting any kind of fun. A smoldering hot guardian dressed like a cowboy dream, but still, what was his deal? As he kept appearing wherever she was and telling her every activity was just too dangerous for a small girl like her, she finally began to feel more like herself and completely lost her temper...in front of a lot of people...and a BB gun may have been involved.
The smoldering cowboy demonstrated exactly how he felt about her outburst, and though she knew she shouldn't have been even more attracted to him afterwards, she could not stop herself. The cowboy who kept telling her what to do and smiling at her like he knew something she didn't had actually made her feel something other than misery and self-pity: total irritation.
What could she do but just wait and see where the next day would take her? What would smoldering cowboy do to her, and if she had her way, what would she do to him?
Ok wow, just wow! I don't even know how to describe how disappointed I am with this book. Blake is a complete pushover who never stands up to anyone, West is an overbearing a**hole with a caveman persona and everybody is practically afraid of him. I only finished it because I was hoping something would change, some important event perhaps. But no, no epiphany to change them and make it good in my book...
Spoiler alert: Blake goes on ranch vacation with her friend -who by the way completely abandons her once she finds a cowboy to have fun with- after her fiance dumps her and she needs a change. (I could live with that since it gives a good start for a steaming romance, albeit cliche). After that, caveman West comes along, orders her around, makes her sit out of every fun activity she booked and paid for but of course she doesn't say a word because she is a darn pushover! I have to admit I liked her for shooting him with a bb gun but she had to ruin that as well when the big boss comes, drags her away and after a supposed scolding she apologizes profusely and all is well. West also "reprimands" her with a spanking without them having any kind of relationship or talk about things, which turns it into abuse actually.
At this point, I was wondering what I'm reading. Maybe it had some paranormal element, he is a shifter who found his mate (thus the caveman and insta-love) and I didn't realise. Maybe she will stand up for herself and show how strong she actually is. And maybe pigs will fly...
Add a bear incident, Blake saving her junkie hostess from overdose, her ex telling her he was cheating on her and is now getting married (and of course the only reason to come clean is because she is pregnant longer than their break up), unprotected sex and a gold-digging accusation. Oh and West is a playboy billionaire. And Blake is cute and sweet. And cute. And sweet.
All in all, it was a bad read. Plot-wise and writing wise. The constant use of the same words over and over, no plethora of adjectives, no variety of descriptions. A quick read, with only negative feelings to linger afterwards.
I don't like writing bad reviews as I usually don't even finish books I dislike, but I couldn't help myself with this one. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, but hey that's just my opinion. Others will probably love it.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. That's all left of this book. I mean seriously, if I had paid good money to go on vacation at some ranch and a random cowboy would try to forbid me from doing the activities I booked and paid for, I'd kick his ass. Or demand a refund. I certainly wouldn't allow him to push me around.
WHat a disappointment. I thought I'd get a steemy cowboy story, but in reality this book is a ridiculous insta-love, wannabe romance that features a plain stupid push over woman and a ridiculous controlling and overbearing man who tries so hard to be the manly-man it's too much.
DNF - stopped about half way through the book with a big NO THANK YOU
I actually really enjoyed this one, my first of the "cowboy" genre and I found it was a great way into the genre as it didn't focus too much on the cowboy lifestyle. I liked the main character she was my kind of sassy lady but I found her backstory didn't match up? Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention... Also I love a book that draws you into the next story, I would really love to read more about drake and found even though he wasn't a main character I want to hear more about him. Great read !
Emotional read, cause I was crying buckets with this one.
Frustrating romance blossoms between Alpha Male West and Jilted Bride Blake. He is overprotective, not allowing petite Blake to do any of the adventures on her dude ranch vacation. He keeps putting her in the kiddie games, so she spends a lot of time in her cabin.
The sexual tension is very strong between these two as ghosts from their past creates problems on trust between them.
This is Book One, so I can't wait to read Book Two.
I was not very impressed with this one. I liked West but Blake was to much. Too soft maybe, too nice. She really didn't have much of a backbone. I couldn't relate to her at all. Now I felt sorry for her, for the situation that had been dealt to her. I even cried a little but I couldn't relate to her. The sex was mediocre at best. All in all I don't believe I'll be reading this author again unless she adds some bells and whistles to her writing.
He was a bit too controlling for my tastes, I just felt sorry for her and I'm afraid I found the ending depressing and fatalistic... Not my cup of tea at all.
